Corn Stocks Up 1 Percent from December 2016 Soybean Stocks Up 9 Percent All Wheat Stocks Down 10 Percent Corn stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 totaled 12.5 billion bushels, up 1 percent from December 1, 2016. Of

the total stocks, 7.74 billion bushels are stored on farms, up 2 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 4.78 billion

bushels, are up slightly from a year ago. The September - November 2017 indicated disappearance is 4.38 billion bushels,

compared with 4.50 billion bushels during the same period last year.

Soybeans stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 totaled 3.16 billion bushels, up 9 percent from December 1, 2016.

Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 1.49 billion bushels, up 11 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at

1.67 billion bushels, are up 7 percent from last December. Indicated disappearance for September - November 2017

totaled 1.54 billion bushels, down 4 percent from the same period a year earlier.

All wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 totaled 1.87 billion bushels, down 10 percent from a year ago.

On-farm stocks are estimated at 393 million bushels, down 31 percent from last December. Off-farm stocks, at

1.48 billion bushels, are down 2 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2017 indicated disappearance is

393 million bushels, 16 percent below the same period a year earlier.

Durum wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 totaled 56.2 million bushels, down 23 percent from a year ago.

On-farm stocks, at 30.7 million bushels, are down 38 percent from December 1, 2016. Off-farm stocks totaled

25.5 million bushels, up 8 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2017 indicated disappearance of

9.91 million bushels is 48 percent below the same period a year earlier.

Barley stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 totaled 155 million bushels, down 19 percent from December 1, 2016.

On-farm stocks are estimated at 74.3 million bushels, 25 percent below a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 80.8 million

bushels, are 14 percent below December 2016. The September - November 2017 indicated disappearance is 24.6 million

bushels, 35 percent below the same period a year earlier.

Oats stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 totaled 66.8 million bushels, down 12 percent from the stocks on

December 1, 2016. Of the total stocks on hand, 23.3 million bushels are stored on farms, down 23 percent from a year

ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 43.5 million bushels, down 3 percent from the previous year. Indicated disappearance during

September - November 2017 totaled 5.19 million bushels.

Grain sorghum stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 totaled 226 million bushels, down 27 percent from a year

ago. On-farm stocks, at 33.8 million bushels, are down 21 percent from December 1 last year. Off-farm stocks, at

192 million bushels, are down 28 percent from a year earlier. The September - November 2017 indicated disappearance

from all positions is 171 million bushels, down 18 percent from the same period in 2016.

Pulse crops stored in all positions on December 1, 2017 are: dry edible peas, 9.48 million cwt; lentils, 4.20 million cwt;

Austrian winter peas, 233 thousand cwt; all chickpeas, 2.62 million cwt; small chickpeas, 1.01 million cwt; and large

chickpeas, 1.61 million cwt.

On-Farm Grain Storage Capacity Up Less than 1 Percent from Last Year

The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 13.5 billion bushels on December 1, 2017, up less than 1 percent from

the revised December 1, 2016 estimate. Iowa continues to lead all States with 2.10 billion bushels of on-farm storage

capacity followed by Minnesota with 1.55 billion bushels. Other major States include Illinois with 1.47 billion bushels,

Nebraska with 1.18 billion bushels, North Dakota with 900 million bushels, and Indiana with 850 million bushels of

on-farm storage capacity. These six States account for 60 percent of the Nation’s on-farm storage capacity. On-farm grain

storage capacity includes all bins, cribs, sheds, and other structures located on farms that are normally used to store whole

grains, oilseeds, or pulse crops.

Off-Farm Grain Storage Capacity and Facilities

Capacity of off-farm commercial grain storage in the United States totaled 11.2 billion bushels on December 1, 2017, up

1 percent from the revised December 1, 2016 total. The largest increase occurred in Iowa where an additional 40.0 million

bushels of capacity was added since December 1, 2016. Other notable increases were shown in Kansas, where capacity

increased 25.0 million bushels, and Ohio and Indiana which were both up 20.0 million bushels from 2016.

Illinois and Iowa remained the two largest off-farm storage capacity States during 2017 with 1.50 billion and 1.47 billion

bushels respectively. Kansas was the third largest followed by Nebraska and Minnesota. These five States accounted for

51 percent of the Nation’s off-farm storage capacity on December 1, 2017.

Off-farm grain storage capacity includes all elevators, warehouses, terminals, merchant mills, other storage, and oilseed

crushers which store whole grains, soybeans, canola, flaxseed, mustard seed, safflower, sunflower, rapeseed, Austrian

winter peas, dry edible peas, lentils, and chickpeas/garbanzo beans. Capacity data exclude facilities used to store only rice

or peanuts, oilseed crushers processing only cottonseed or peanuts, tobacco warehouses, seed warehouses, and storage

facilities that handle only dry edible beans, other than chickpeas/garbanzo beans.

Off-farm storage facilities totaled 8,527 on December 1, 2017, down less than 1 percent from the revised

December 1, 2016 estimate. States with the largest number of facilities include Iowa with 880, Illinois with 840, Kansas

with 715, Minnesota with 575, and Nebraska with 483.

Statistical Methodology

Survey Procedures: The grain stocks estimates in this report are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks

of December. Separate surveys are conducted to obtain the on-farm and off-farm estimates. The on-farm stocks survey is

a probability survey that includes a sample of approximately 81,800 farm operators selected from a list of producers that

ensures all operations in the United States have a chance to be selected. These producers are asked to provide the total

quantities of grain stored on their operations as of December 1, 2017. This includes all whole grains and oilseeds stored

whether for feed, seed, or sale as well as any stored under a government program.

The off-farm stocks survey is an enumeration of all known commercial grain storage facilities. This includes

approximately 8,500 facilities with 11.2 billion bushels of storage capacity. An effort is made to obtain a report from all

facilities. Reports of stock holdings are normally received from operations covering about 90 percent of the capacity.

Estimates are made for missing facilities to make the survey complete.

Estimation Procedures: On-farm and off-farm survey data are reviewed at the State and National levels for

reasonableness, consistency with historical estimates, and current crop size. After estimates are made for on-farm and

off-farm stocks, the totals of these two are combined and evaluated using the balance sheet approach. This method utilizes

other sources of data to check the reasonableness of the stocks estimates. Estimates of production, imports, exports,

crushings, millings, and all other recorded uses of grains and oilseeds are reviewed to make sure beginning stocks,

production, utilization, and ending stocks are within reasonable balance and present the best possible estimate of stocks.

Revision Policy: On-farm and off-farm stocks are subject to revision the quarter following initial publication and again in

the following December 1 Grain Stocks report published in January each year. Revisions can be made when late reports

are received, errors are detected in reporting and calculations, and production estimates are revised. Estimates will also be

reviewed following the 5-year Census of Agriculture. No revisions to these years will be made after that date.

Reliability: Reliability of the on-farm and off-farm stocks must be treated separately because the survey designs for the

two surveys are very different. The on-farm stocks estimates are subject to sampling variability because all operations

holding on-farm stocks are not included in the sample. This variability, as measured by the relative standard error at the

United States level, is approximately 1.5 percent for corn, 2.0 percent for soybeans, and 2.3 percent for all wheat. This

means that chances are approximately 95 out of 100 that survey estimates for stocks will be within plus or minus

3.0 percent for corn, 4.0 percent for soybeans, and 4.6 percent for all wheat of the value that could be developed by

averaging the estimates produced from all possible samples selected from the same population and surveyed using the

same procedures. The relative standard errors for sorghum, barley, and oats are 9.5, 4.7, and 4.0 percent, respectively.

Survey indications are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and

mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. Off-farm, as well as on-farm stocks, are subject to these types of

errors. These errors cannot be measured directly, but they are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data

collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
