An unforgettable trip to Venice

In February 2014 I went to Venice on holiday. I was there for the carnival. It was an experience I will never forget! Here is what I found out about this spectacular event:

1 _____________________

The Venice Carnival began in 1162 when the people of Venice started to dance in St Mark’s Square. It became very famous all over Europe because of the colourful costumes that people wore. The carnival gave the people of Venice a chance to forget their worries, relax and celebrate. However, while the King of Austria was ruling Venice, the carnival stopped and it was against the law to wear masks in the street. The carnival finally returned to Venice in 1979. It is celebrated at the same time every year, over 10 days in late winter.

2 _____________________

The costumes at the carnival are very beautiful and unusual. People wear dresses, long black coats, strange hats with three corners and masks. The masks are what make the carnival so original. Many have got very detailed artwork and complicated designs. Some are quite terrifying! There are competitions for the best costume. If you go to the carnival, you will see lots of people walking the streets and squares wanting be photographed and maybe win competitions! If you want to join in with the atmosphere, you will need to buy a mask! There are many shops around the city where you can do this.

3 _____________________

During the carnival there are lots of parties and activities going on. The action starts with a zombie walk. Hundreds of zombies walk through the city! This is a recent American addition to the carnival and great fun for fans of TV programmes like ‘The Walking Dead’. But the place to be during the carnival is St Mark’s Square. This is where everyone goes and this is where you will see all the fantastic costumes. There is food, music and dance. It can get very busy, so if that’s a little too much you can always go into one of the side streets and still see all the fun. There is also the Arsenal, an enormous building where various theatre performances, concerts and other events take place during this extraordinary and unforgettable festival.

12 Read the text again. Answer the questions. (8 marks)

1 How long does the carnival last and in what

season does it take place? _______________________________________

2 Name two items that people wear on their heads

during the carnival. _______________________________________ 3 What can you expect to see if you go to the main

areas of the city?

_______________________________________ 4 Where can you see the carnival if you don’t like

lots of people? _______________________________________

My American Idol: Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks is an American singer, songwriter and

actress from New Jersey. She sings a mixture of

pop and R & B. She’s very successful in America, but she isn’t as famous in the UK and Australia as she is in the States. She has won various music

awards, including the Teen Choice Awards and the

BMI Pop Awards. She first became famous in 2007 when she was the youngest person to win American

Idol at just seventeen. That was when I first saw her. If you don’t know, American Idol is a talent show that was created by Simon Fuller, a British TV

producer. Every year thousands of singers audition for a chance to win the show. The winner gets a record deal with a big music company. The show

helps to launch the music career of the winner.

Jordan’s journey has been very inspirational to me.

When she was young she took part in several talent

shows. In 2006 she auditioned twice for American Idol. She failed to make it through the first time. But she didn’t give up hope and she kept trying. On her

second audition she got through. She was popular

during the competition and had lots of fans, including me! Since she won the show Jordin has

produced several albums. Her debut single Tattoo made it into the top 10 in the American charts. She has also worked with singers such as Chris Brown

and Alicia Keys. In 2010 she went on her first tour of America, which was a huge success. She has now moved into acting and has starred in many films.

Jordin has become very rich but she hasn’t allowed this to change her. She uses her money to do good

by supporting various charities. In 2008 she

travelled to Ghana to help with ‘Malaria No More’. This organization is working to end malaria deaths in Africa. She also contributed to ‘We Are the

World’, a charity single made to raise money for the

survivors of the Haitian earthquake. Jordin continues to help and support people who are in

need. This is why she is my idol: she is both a fantastic singer and a fantastic person. I’ve bought her new album and I’m going to see her in concert

next month! I can’t wait!

Designing in the street

A group of Design students from Sheffield Hallam

University in the UK did a research project

about innovative street design. The purpose of

their project was to explore how design can be

used to create interesting and innovative urban

spaces. The students focused on a section of

Gloucester Road in London. They considered the

street in terms of the people who lived there

permanently, such as home owners and shop

owners, the people who passed through, such as

pedestrians, and those who regularly interacted

in the street, such as post men, taxi drivers,

bus drivers and rubbish collectors. At the time

of the study there were plans to reduce the

number of vehicles in the street by only

allowing electric cars.

The students started the project by observing

what went on in the street over a week. They

also talked to people in the street, asking

their opinions about what they would like to see

made better and how they wanted the street to

change in the future. Then the students went

away and thought about how they could improve

the neighbourhood. They didn’t just focus on

design, but also on how they could encourage a

sense of community and sharing between

strangers.

One of the ideas they came up with was ‘Bus Stop

Messaging’. They put a large notepad on a bus

stop with the question, ‘What are you thinking

about to pass the time?’ Many people on the

street wrote their thoughts on the pad. The

students discovered that people liked sharing

their stories with each other and reading other

people’s stories.

The next experiment was a ‘Swap Box’. This was a

box that people could leave things in that they

no longer wanted and ask for things they wanted.

Each object in the Swap Box had a paper tag

attached with a short story about the history of

the object and why the owner wanted to swap it.

This idea was quite successful and proved an

effective way of recycling objects and reducing

waste.

Another rather humorous idea that emerged as a

result of the research was the ‘Gossip Vehicle’.

This is an electric car that could be shared by

the people living on the street in an effort to

reduce the number of cars in the area. In order

to gain access to the car, the passenger has to

whisper an exciting piece of news or gossip to

the car!

The students’ creative ideas helped to

temporarily transform a typical London street

into a friendly and helpful place with a real

sense of community.

Name: Phoebe Coulson Age: 24 From: York, England

When I graduated from Nottingham University with

a degree in Modern Languages I didn’t know what I wanted to do! So when my best friend Ella asked me to travel around the world with her I immediately

said yes. We got jobs as waitresses in a café in York and we saved up enough money to get us to Australia. While we were working in the café we

planned out the stages of our trip. I decided to write a blog about my travels.

We started our journey in Sydney, Australia. I got a

job as a sales assistant in a shoe shop and Ella worked for a telesales company. We did this for about three months. The experience taught me how

to deal with customers, solve problems and operate

a cash register. I was good at the job but I didn’t feel particularly excited by it. I always looked forward to

coming back to our apartment and writing funny stories and reflections about my day. Ella hated having to sell things over the phone and felt bored

and miserable the whole time.

After Sydney we travelled to Thailand, where we found work teaching English in a primary school in

Bangkok. We both really enjoyed this experience. It was a creative and social job which required

organization skills and the ability to think on your

feet. We loved working with the children.

Three months after arriving in Thailand, we moved on to Córdoba, Argentina where we eventually

found work on a farm. We had to wake up at 5 a.m.

every morning to pick fruit and vegetables. It was physically hard and we both hated it! We became

quite fit but we were constantly tired. At the end of each working day I crawled into bed, opened my laptop and wrote about the day and what I was

going to do on the next stage of the trip. One benefit of this experience was that it gave me a chance to use my Spanish.

After we returned home, I didn’t know what to do

with myself. I read through my blog and realised something. The one thing I loved doing was writing

and talking to people. So I applied for a job as a

journalist. Six months later, I got a job at an online magazine as a junior travel writer. I love it. Next month I’m going back to Spain to do research for an

article on the top ten cities in Spain. I have been

very fortunate to have visited so many amazing places and I feel very lucky to have finally got my

dream job!

What makes us happy?

There has been a lot of research into happiness. Researchers have found that many people believe that money, a dream job or a big house will make

them happy, but scientists have discovered that

actually material things don’t play a big role in our happiness.

1 _________

Scientists found that people feel happier when they

have an experience rather than when they buy

something. For example, buying something that you really want will make you happy temporarily – for about two weeks. But then after that you will be left

with a feeling of emptiness. Scientists conducted an

experiment to compare what happened when a group of students bought something and what

happened when they had an enjoyable experience. They found that the feelings created from having an experience, like spending time with friends or family,

are much stronger and longer lasting than what we feel when we buy something.

2 __________

Fitness is the key to good health. But did you know

that exercise can make you happy? When we exercise, we produce chemicals in our brain that

make us feel positive and energetic. Doing just half an hour of exercise a day can improve how we feel. Researchers did experiments with people suffering

from depression. The people were asked to

exercise every day. They recorded how they felt before and after the exercise over the course of a

month. The results showed a significant improvement in happiness levels.

3 ___________

Hobbies are also important for happiness and well-being. Hobbies can make you healthier because they can lower your stress levels by taking your

mind off any difficulties that you are facing and

focusing your mind on something else. Hobbies are also a great way to meet new people and make new

friends. Sharing a common interest can make you feel closer to others. Learning a new skill through a hobby also increases your self-esteem and this also

makes you feel happier.

11 Read the text. What is Brandon Stanton’s job now? (2 marks)

____________________________________

Hi Mel,

How’s it going? I saw something online today that I think you will love! Have you ever heard of Brandon

Stanton? He’s got an amazing blog called ‘Humans

of New York’. Have a look at it sometime! Are you still looking for someone interesting to write about for your English project? Well, I’ve done a bit of

research about this guy for you! He’s had a pretty

interesting life so far! Here’s what I found out:

“For Brandon Stanton of Atlanta, Georgia

photography was just a hobby. That changed in 2010 when he lost his job buying and selling financial shares for Gambit Trading. It was then that

he decided to go professional. He started taking photos in Chicago before touring America to follow his passion. He took photos of city scenes and some

natural, honest photos of the cities’ inhabitants. He visited New York in August 2010, not planning to

spend long there, but he soon found the city streets

perfect for his art and decided to stay. He started asking permission to take photos of people and chatted to them, finding out about their lives. He

posted his photos in an album on his Facebook

profile page at first before creating a separate Facebook page and a blog so that more people

could see them. Since 2010, he has taken thousands of photos of New Yorkers and he has seen his idea develop into something big. His blog

now has nearly twelve million Facebook followers. Under each photo is a sentence or a quotation or sometimes a story that reveals something about the

lives and experiences of his subjects. Some are funny, some are sad, some are exciting and some

are just incredible.

Stanton’s success has also been incredible: he has

been featured in Vogue magazine and he has even taken photos of the people who work at Facebook.

He has also published a book based on the blog,

which reached number one in the The New York Times Best Sellers list in 2013. Brandon continues to work as a photographer and blogger but remains

modest: ‘So far, my job has gone pretty well. I’ve

taken nearly 5,000 photos of people and I’ve written 50 stories. And I’ve met some amazing people along

the way.’”

Mel, when you’ve looked at the blog, tell me what you think. I think he’s created something really

beautiful!

Speak soon,

Caitlin xxx

Great Adventurers

Here’s our pick of the greatest young adventurers out there today!

Jessica Watson was inspired by a story she heard

on the news when she was 11. The story was about Jesse Martin, an eighteen-year-old who became the youngest person to sail around the world. When

Jessica was thirteen, she told her parents she

wanted to do the same thing. She trained hard for life alone at sea. She knew she needed to be

physically and mentally ready for the journey. It wasn’t easy for her; some people advised her not to do it and she was caught in a dangerous storm in

the Atlantic. Despite the difficulties, she made it and achieved her goal on 15 May 2010 aged only sixteen years old.

Ed Stafford holds the Guinness World Record for being the first person to walk the length of the

Amazon River, a journey that took him over two

years. He walked an incredible 4,000 miles from Peru to Brazil. Along the way he was constantly attacked by various insects and was almost eaten

by a giant snake. He filmed his dangerous journey

and it was made into a TV programme. During his adventure, Ed observed a great deal of

deforestation. He used his expedition to help raise public awareness of the environmental issues affecting the Amazon and to inspire people to get

out and explore the great outdoors.

Eric Larsen has spent over fifteen years exploring the North and South Poles and has dedicated his

life to sharing his love for polar environments with the public. Over the years he has seen how the

poles have been negatively affected by global

warming. This inspired him to do the ‘Save the Poles’ project. This was a 365-day expedition to the North Pole, the South Pole and the top of Mount

Everest. Amazingly, he was able to survive in

temperatures as low as -50 degrees. He became the first person in history to reach all three ‘poles’

within a year.

____________________: The Incredible Story of

José Salvador Alvarenga

This is the story of a man who spent thirteen

months in the Pacific Ocean before he was

discovered on an island. José Salvador Alvarenga,

originally from El Salvador but living in Mexico, was

on a fishing trip off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico in

December 2012. He was fishing for sharks with a

fifteen-year-old boy. Their boat broke down after a

storm and they were left drifting in the Pacific

Ocean. The boy died after four months because he

didn’t eat the birds, fish and turtles that José caught

and killed with a knife to survive. José said that he

didn’t see land for a long time, only the endless blue

ocean. He soon lost track of time and could only tell

when it was night and day. Finally, his boat drifted

to the small of Ebon in the Pacific. The islanders

were shocked when they saw him. His hair and

beard were very long and his skin was badly

sunburned. His legs were very swollen as well.

They gave him food and water and took him to a

hospital to recover.

When the world’s media found out about José, he

became very famous. But some people find his

story a little too incredible. When he was found he

wasn’t very thin. And when questioned about his

story he got a lot of his facts confused. The case

still remains a mystery. There’s no doubt that José

has been through a physical and mental ordeal, but

did he really spend such a long time alone? If not,

then where was he and what was he doing? Or,

could he simply be telling the truth? Join us as we

investigate one of the greatest stories of survival in

modern times.

Art in New York City Get out and about and enjoy yourselves with our guide to art in the city that never sleeps! One of the best things about New York City is the amazing public art. There are hundreds of sculptures and paintings for you to view and enjoy. And you know the best part about it, don’t you? It’s all completely free! Some of the art is permanent and some is temporary, so make sure you look online before you visit to see what’s on. Here’s our selection of the permanent exhibitions you simply cannot miss! Wall Street Bull: This giant beast was created

by the Italian sculptor Arturo de Modica. He made it in response to the financial crisis in the USA in 1987; the animal was a symbol of hope. It’s located in Bowling Green Park in Manhattan’s Financial District.

Duke Ellington Memorial: This tall sculpture stands on three columns and towers above the Central Park trees around it. The bronze statue of the famous jazz musician and his piano was created by Robert Graham. It can be seen from 110th Street, Fifth Avenue.

Red Cube: Combining art with architecture, this massive red box is situated in 140 Broadway. It has a hole through the centre which allows the viewer to see the building behind it. It was created by a Japanese American artist, Isamu Noguchi.

What’s on now? Here’s a quick guide to the temporary exhibitions you can find in NYC’s parks: In Madison Square Park you can see ‘Walks of

Life’ by Tony Cragg. It consists of three huge bronze sculptures that look like they are in motion.

In Randal’s Island Park there is a treat for young children – art they can sit on! There are ten chairs made from the earth and covered in grass.

In Tribeca Park visitors can see a huge teddy bear. It looks like it is made of black trash bags but it’s actually made of metal.

On Staten Island you can see ‘The Dance’ by DB Lampman. It consists of five figures – made of steel and wrapped in cloth – which float above the ground, hold hands and dance. At night they are lit up and this gives the scene a strange atmosphere.

Go to page 7 for our guide to the city’s indoor art galleries and the best places to eat.
