The lawyers for Councillor Julia Butler and the lawyers for the City of Grand Forks have pleaded their cases to the Su-preme Court of B.C.

The case, which was seen by Judge B. Greyell on Monday at the Vancouver Law Courts, stems from a petition from the city to disqualify Butler from offi ce for breach of oath of offi ce and confl ict of interest.

Judge Greyell determined a reserve judgement, which means he has yet to decide. A court representa-tive stated that the judge will look over the documents received and release the judgement later, although no date has been determined.

If disqualifi ed, Butler’s council seat would become vacant and a byelection would be held in the future to fi ll her seat.

“I was surprised by the amount of people, though it’s certainly not unwelcome,” he said to the Gazette. “People were certainly passionate about it. I think a lot of questions were answered. The options that are available for residents are quite suitable. All residents in (the city of) Grand Forks have curb-side collection, which has to be the most convenient collection available. We’ll come right to your door.”

Dueck said the only users that might be inconvenienced by the removal of the down-town bins would be small busi-

nesses. “There are some small businesses that are within walking distance of that site and there is no doubt they will be affected,” he said. “That was an unusual service for any busi-ness anywhere in the province. To have a service that available was amazing and that’s unusu-al. Now small businesses will be asked to drive four minutes to the landfill.”

The Grand Forks landfill is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon until 4 p.m.

Dueck further explained

that through their contract with MMBC, the RDKB provides the staffing and the space for the bins at the landfill, while MMBC collects the material. The curbside program is pro-vided by a contractor (Kettle Valley Waste) and includes garbage and recycling on alter-nating weeks, and green bins every week.

For recycling, the RDKB rec-ommends curbside collection for paper, cardboard, tin cans and rigid plastic containers. MMBC recycling bins at the landfill are to be used for film plastic, glass and styrofoam containers. Once collected, the material is sent to the Cascade Recovery Depot in Kelowna.

Tim Dueck (standing), RDKB solid waste management coordinator, answered questions about the recycling program at a citizen get-together at Happy Days Restaurant on Thursday. Craig Lindsay photo

Hotels, motels and other accom-modators in Grand Forks and Chris-tina Lake may soon be charging a hotel tax. After receiving more in-formation from staff, council agreed unanimously on Jan. 25 at the regu-lar council meeting at Grand Forks City Hall to support endorsing an application that would add a two per cent hotel tax for Grand Forks accommodators. The Municipal and Regional District Tax (MRDT) is be-ing proposed by the Christina Gate-way Community Development As-sociation (CDA) as a way to raising money to help market the region.

“At one point, we held off be-cause it was only ourselves and Christina Lake that would be in-volved,” said Mayor Frank Konrad. “We didn’t have all the figures of who supported it. We want to know if the hotel owners were in favour of it. We didn’t want to ram it down their throats.”

Council was able to get the num-bers they sought, which indicated that 70 per cent of Grand Forks ho-tel owners were in support of the MRDT. Regionally, 64 per cent of accommodators and 60.9 per cent of rooms from across the Boundary are in support—a number which ex-ceeds the required 51 per cent sup-port.

“It’s pretty much everywhere, the hotel tax,” said Konrad. “We wouldn’t be unique if we put it on our hotels. The money goes to promoting and marketing the area,

which is great. Maybe down the road Greenwood and Midway will get on board and it will be Bound-ary-wide.”

Cavan Gates, community coordi-nator for Christina Gateway CDA, said that they are very pleased by the decision.

“Kudos to Grand Forks city staff for putting together a solid brief-ing,” he said. “We’re going to work on finalizing the application now that we have the approval of both the accommodators and the politi-cians. Once done, we will be send-ing it into the province for approval. They will run it through their pro-cess which will take between six to nine months. If it’s a yes, the tax will start to be collected.”

Gates said the MRDT tax would be collected by the province and given to the RKDB and then to the Boundary Museum Society, which will facilitate the implementation of the marketing plan. “That’s all theoretical right now and it will be determined in the action plan,” he said. “The Boundary Museum will implement the plan since they are representative of the whole Bound-ary, which we were looking for.”

The action plan, which is in draft form at this time, includes holding networking and professional de-velopment events, increase quality of tourism products such as hik-ing, biking, tubing, swimming, and much more, increase off-peak sea-son products, collect and analyze statistics, increase events targeting youth, and employ a part-time mar-keting manager.

Boundary communities are shrinking according to reports from the provincial govern-ment’s StatsBC website. The population estimate for B.C. cities in 2015 is out and Grand Forks is at 3,936, down 2.1 per cent (4021) from the year be-fore. Meanwhile, Greenwood is at 692, down two people from 2014. Midway is at 655 for 2015,

down 12 people from 2014. Over the mountain, Trail is

7,448 in 2015, up 0.3 per cent from the year before. Castlegar is 7,953, up 1.8 per cent from 2014, while Nelson is 10,802, up 3.2 per cent from the previous year.

The entire Kootenay-Bound-ary is 29,349 for 2015, down 2.3 per cent from 2014. The popu-lation for the whole province in 2015 is 4,653,129, up one per cent from 2014. The biggest cit-

ies are Vancouver at 648,608 (up 0.8 per cent from 2014), Sur-rey at 526,004 (up two per cent) and Burnaby at 238,209 (up 1.5 per cent). Greater Vancouver’s entire population in 2015 is 2,513,869 (up 1.2 per cent).

Biggest cities outside of Van-couver are Kelowna at 124,529 (up 2.3 per cent from 2014), Kamloops at 89,995 (up 0.6 per cent) and Victoria at 84,793 (up 1.6 per cent from 2014).

After a presentation by the city’s energy consultant Alex Love at a budget consulta-tion, Grand Forks is considering building it’s own substation and becoming a trans-mission costumer of Fortis.

That would mean cost savings to both the city and the residents. Of course, be-fore anything happens the city will need to have a feasibility study done.

It may seem an unnecessary and expen-sive under-taking especially for a city des-perate to save money. But without a proper consulting firm looking into the various expenses and different options for provid-ing energy to residents.

A study will take some time and then some will have to disseminate the informa-tion and provide options and suggestions to council for decision down the road.

In the end, council will have to decide whether spending money up front for a substation is worth the long range savings being a transmission customer would of-fer.

HOW TO REACH US

Let them eat Cake by the Ocean

Around here in the Grand Forks and Boundary area we are experiencing four seasons sometimes all in one day. We’ve had much more snow this year, which is great for the ski hills and for the river levels but for those of us who have to spend 10 minutes in the early morning plowing the driveway and wip-ing the snow of the car, the sun-shine is welcome.

What a busy week last week after the usual post-Christmas slow down. Christina Lake had their well attended Winter Fes-tival, MLA Linda Larson had a luncheon with guest speakers, Rotary had their Scotch Tasting, out in the West Boundary, Mid-way had their snowmobile races.

There were lots of great chanc-

es to get out of the house and try different things. Next week is the big family day weekend celebra-tion in Grand Forks and the Ice Fishing Derby out at Wilgress Lake.

Now let’s talk about good ol’ 2015. Despite being a month ago here are a few of my highlights of last year. I’m going to start with music. It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about the music industry so I figured it’s time.

So without further adieu here are my top 10 songs of 2015. Years past I’ve analyzed each song and maybe talked about the artists. But let’s face it, music is subjec-tive and I’m no music critic so I won’t tell you whether the cho-rus is lacking something or other. The truth is these are the songs I like because they appeal to me—they song good. Lyrics are important but really, if the music isn’t good who really cares.

Okay #10 was Shawn Mendes’ Stitches, #9 was Hotline Bling by Drake, a couple of catchy diddies

by a pair of Canadian singers. Walk the Moon was #8 with the ultra-catchy Shut up and Dance; while coming in at #7 is the soul meets rap hit Locked Away by R. City with Adam Levine of Ma-roon 6. The #6 song according to me was OMI’s ear worm epic Cheerleader. Hitting #5 on my own chart was Honey I’m Good by Andy Grammar, a clever song about remaining faithful among temptation. At #4 was Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams, while #3 is Ex’s and Oh’s by Elle King, a pair of dreamy, catchy jams by a couple of talented women. #2 was the DNCE hit Cake by the Ocean because hey who doesn’t like cake by the ocean, while #1 is the insanely catchy Downtown by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with a even crazier video featur-ing the rappers on mopeds.

My least favourite song of the year was Adele’s Hello. No doubt she is successful but I find her voice annoyingly grating and her songs over played and re-

petitive. It was just a couple of weeks

ago that rock legend David Bow-ie passed away. He was one of my favourite rock stars. He was well known for changing his look up and his music as well. My favourite Bowie songs are the older ones like Life on Mars, Starman and Heroes. Of the newer ones Modern Love was catchy and is rightly regarded as one of the top songs of the ’80s.

I saw Bowie live in Vancouver at B.C. Place Stadium during his Glass Spider tour in 1987. Per-forming all his hits on an elabo-rate stage with an actual giant glass spider figure, Bowie none-the-less stood out with his larger than life presence.

A final musical shout out to Fall Out Boy who although short of my top 10 put out a couple of killer tracks Uma Thurman and Centuries. Interesting side note—Fall Out Boy was named after Radioactive Man’s sidekick from The Simpsons.

Thanks for shopping spree

Property should be left as is

Editor, The Gazette:Sometimes coming

in last isn’t so bad. As it turned out, my name was drawn last, resulting in me winning the 2016 Grand Forks shopping spree.

I just want to thank all of the contributing businesses including the Gazette staff who orches-

trated the event. Shopping local could

not have been better. Not only was it fun to spend the winnings in town but the experience was made even richer by the enthusiastic and warm greetings from the staff at the 18 participating businesses.

Of my purchases, sev-

eral items were not im-mediately available and were put on order. They all arrived in less than three business days—wonderful service.

Thank you for mak-ing my shopping a real pleasure.

Chris Stanley-Jones,Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:Please add me to the

list of people pleading with Grace McGregor to abandon the idea of a housing development

on park land at Christina Lake.

The property in ques-tion is one of the last wild places that regular folks can visit on the lake, and

home to a host of wild animals, birds and plants.

Please, please consider alternate sites!

Melissa Shaw,Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:An open letter to Linda Larson, MLA Boundary-Similkameen:

I am writing this letter to express my opposition to the proposed seniors housing project on the corner of the only piece of wild lakeshore left at Christina Lake.

This lovely piece of land has been a haven for nature lovers and walkers for years. Now this proposal will change it into a seniors’ complex and parking lot.

Christina Lake is cer-tainly in need of seniors housing but a seniors manufactured home park already exists and is underused.

This amazing piece

of land that is being pro-posed has beaver, otter, great blue herons and so many other wild birds and animals.

This property also is interspersed with walk-ing trails and benches to observe the wild side of the Lake.

This seniors’ centre is across a very busy highway from the store, post office, drug store and clinic. This means seniors will have to cross this highway to access these amenities. It also means I will not have the beautiful trails I shared with my children to share with my grandchil-dren.

I tried to attend the community meetings to

express my concern but a sudden family emergen-cy made that impossible. I wrote a letter about these same concerns two years ago and thought the issue was over but now it has started again.

I would like to ask you to intervene and consider the impact this will have on our beauti-ful Lake. Issues around sewage, impact on wild-life and the urbanization of our last piece of wild Lake left.

Thank you for read-ing this and I hope you will stop on your travels sometime and enjoy this rare piece of nature.

Jill Gresley-Jones,Christina Lake, B.C.

A hotel tax and support for a Hock-eyville nomination were a few of the top-ics covered at the Jan. 26 Grand Forks City Council meeting. Fire truck financing approved

Council approved financing 5-1 (Butler opposed) for the Grand Forks Fire/Res-cue’s new 2015 Rosenbauer 30 Metre (100 foot) Cobra Platform fire truck through the Municipal Finance Authority Equipment Financing program for $722,518.58.

The ladder truck was delivered last sum-mer at a total cost of $1,072,718.58. The Re-gional District of Kootenay Boundary has contributed $350,000 towards the truck, leaving the rest for the city. Staff recom-mended financing the truck through the Equipment Financing Program offreed by the Municipal Finance Association as the interest rate (1.31 per cent) is very reason-able.

The maximum term for financing is five years. This would equate to approximately $65 parcel tax per parcel, per year, for five years, based on 2,324 properties. WildSafe application gets go ahead

The WildSafeBC program will be return-ing to Grand Forks this season after council voted for staff to prepare an application for a coordinator. The program features a local coordinator who coordinates a number of activities aimed at reducing human-wild-

life conflict through education, innovation and cooperation. The program has oper-ated in Grand Forks since 2013.

The city is expected to contribute a mini-mum of $3,000 towards the program, while the B.C. Conservation Foundation provides $8,155 and covers the hiring, training and supervision.

The program is earmarked to run from May 1 to Nov. 30. In prior years, the city also contributed a wage top-up of $4.81 per hour. City looks at changes to campground policy

After an increase in complaints regarding usage and safety at the city campground at City Park, staff has initiated a review of the campground bylaw and policy. The prima-ry concerns were in regards to dog kennels, unsightly tenting and long-term campers.

To prepare for the 2016 camping season, which begins in May, city staff will present bylaw and policy amendments to council within the next few weeks. The proposed changes will move the regulations within the policy to the bylaw, while removing the operational items into a departmental pro-cedure.

The bylaw will see the addition of the policy items while also implementing ad-justments to the campground rates (which are now in the fees and charges bylaw) and other housekeeping items.

People came from all over the Bound-ary to hear from several spekaers at the Omega Restaurant on Saturday. There were about 40 people on hand for the lun-cheon with Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson, which featured three pre-sentations from local groups and a tradi-tion Russian lunch of borscht and bread.

Constituency assistant Colleen Misner spoke first and talked about the various roles of the MLA including providing social help, providing information on government services, attending commu-nity events, and offering congratulatory messages.

Introducing the speakers, and orga-nizing the event, was Cher Wyers.

Gina Burroughs, government agent, Service BC, spoke about integrating in-come assistance services. She talked about how the office in Grand Forks is highly regarded throughout B.C. for be-ing a “one stop shop” with Employment Insurance, pension, social insurance numbers (third Friday of each month

through Service Canada), disability in-formation, medical services plan infor-mation, residential tenancy information and more.

Cynthia Garnett and Melanie Shen-stone from Boundary Family and Indi-vidual Services Society talked about the many services they offer including Ba-by’s Best Chance, peer mentoring, breast-feeding café, and more.

The final guest speaker was Con-nie Marchal, executive director of the Boundary Women’s Coalition. Marchal talked about the work the group does

with the transition house, which offers a maximum 30-day stay for women and children in need. She said that 1,100 bed days have been used since April 2015.

Marchal said they are in discussion with BC Housing about having second stage housing in Grand Forks, which would allow 18-24 month stays for wom-en and children as well as counseling and financial aid as necessary.

The luncheon ended with closing re-marks from Boundary-Similkameen Lib-eral riding association president Everett Baker.

Imagine, if you will, the 19 original founders of our credit union meeting at the Grower’s Exchange one August evening in 1949 and contributing $30 each. Granted its charter on August 22, 1949, the Credit Union started attracting attention.

Within a year, 50 members had joined and assets were over $400. Today, we are almost 9,000 members strong with more than $220 million dollars in assets providing a full range of competitive financial products and services and continually re-investing into our communities.

What would the Boundary be like if the credit union had never been born– or suddenly disappeared today? From the beginning, our job has beento make a way for regular people to access financing to help them livetheir dreams… originally for farmers and small business. We’ve stayed trueto our purpose, continuing in the tradition of the cooperative movement.

How do I express my interest to run in the election? If you are interested in becoming acandidate in the 2016 Board ofDirectors’ Election, please downloadthe Candidates’ Intro Kit which out-lines what is required of a Director interms of time and qualifications. What is GFCU looking for in its prospective candidates?GFCU needs leaders who bring withthem a broad range of skills andattributes that strongly align withour values and that support andstrengthen the current Board’s ongoing commitment to implementing our strategic vision. Did you know…?Credit unions, called by variousnames around the world, are mem-ber-owned, not-for-profit financialcooperatives that provide savings, credit and other financial services

to their members. Credit unionmembership is based on a commonbond, a linkage shared by saversand borrowers who belong to aspecific community, organization, religion or place of employment. Credit unions pool their members’ savings deposits and shares to finance their own loan portfolios rather than rely on outside capital. Members benefit from higher returns on savings, lower rates on loans and fewer fees on average.Credit unions worldwide offer mem-bers from all walks of life much morethan financial services. They providemembers the chance to own theirown financial institution and helpthem create opportunities such asstarting small businesses, growingfarms, building family homes andeducating their children. Regardless of account size in the credit union, each member may run for the volunteer board of directors and cast a vote in elections. In some countries, members encounter their first taste of democratic decision making through their credit unions.* *WOCCU.org website excerpt

The city could save the tax-payers money in the long run if they pony up for a substation and become a transmission cus-tomer to FortisBC and not a dis-tribution customer—that from Alex Love, the city’s energy con-sultant, who gave a presentation to council and residents in atten-dance at a public meeting put on by the city on Jan. 27.

He went over several different scenarios for possible changes to the Fortis substation at South Ruckle. In his presentation, Love said that the city is currently a distribution customer of Fortis. The city buys power from Fortis and sells it to residents. He said that becoming a transmission customer could be a possible way of delivering a better value to the residents of Grand Forks with a reduction in bulk power purchasing price. Expediting matters is the fact that Fortis will need to built a new substation in Grand Forks due to an potential issue with flooding.

“There’s really two different issues were discussing here,” said Love. “One is a flood plain issue at the existing Ruckle sub-station—Fortis is considering whether they should relocate or elevate that station in order

to deal with some flood plain issues. Separately, Grand Forks has to consider whether to change from being a distribution costumer to a transmission cus-tomer. That would mean they would build their own substa-tion if they became a transmis-sion customer.”

Love said it’s two separate is-sues, only tied together because of the timeliness involving with Fortis likely having to rebuild the Ruckle substation.

“Grand Forks would have to spend money to buy and in-stall the substation but the day they put it in service, they start to realize a benefit,” said Love. “Grand Forks would still buy en-ergy from Fortis but at the much cheaper transmission rate.”

Dave Reid, manager of op-erations, said at this point they’re just looking into having a feasibility study to determine whether or not the cost to the city would be worth it. A feasi-bility study would cost the city $50,000 and would have to be approved with the budget in May.

Also at the meeting, CAO Doug Allin gave an overview of the city’s upcoming capital projects as well as the projects completed in 2015. The fire en-gine ladder truck is the most expensive item from 2015, com-

ing in at $1,071,459. The down-town beautification project cost $275,000, while the City Hall re-build cost $47,892.

Allin and other staff members talked about the 2015 carry-for-ward capital projects which ap-pear in the 2016 budget includ-ing the spray park for $83,926, airport beacons at $60,000, and playground equipment replace-ment at $45,000. Other engi-neering carry-forward projects are the multi-utility projects at Third Street and at 22nd Street for total cost of $3,324,130, and the west side fire protection at $928,784.

The city’s reserve balances at year end of 2015 are $2,940,722. The total reserves at year end 2016 are set at $2,485,906. A 2011 report from Urban Systems de-termined the city had a $32 mil-lion infrastructure deficit mak-ing for a short fall of $29,514,094.

Proposed capital projects for 2016 are: Fifth Street water main replacement at a total budget of $575,000; Well #3 pump and motor for $405,000; Third Street sewer main repair at $100,000; and public works yard fuel tank replacement at $75,000. Coun-cil and staff also discussed the long-awaited Silver Kettle Vil-lage sidewalk, which would likely go from Silver Kettle to Extra Foods at a cost of $212,500.

Male held in custody

Vehicle with no plate pulled overOn Jan. 26, at 1:47 p.m. , Grand

Forks RCMP stopped a vehicle that was not displaying a licence plate that was travelling on 73rd Avenue.

While dealing with the 54-year-old female driver, the officer de-termined that the driver had been consuming liquor that night. The driver provided a sample into an approved screening device that re-sulted in a “Fail” reading.

“The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days,” said Cpl. Philip Crack of the Grand Forks RCMP.

The driver was also issued a ticket for having open alcohol in the vehicle.Unlicenced driver charged

On Jan. 28, at 8:35 p.m. , Grand Forks RCMP stopped a vehicle that was being operated by a 36-year-old male who was known to be an unlicensed driver.

“While dealing with the driv-er, the officer determined that he had been consuming alcohol that evening,” said Crack. The driver refused to provide a sample into an approved screening device and was issued a 90-day driving pro-hibition and his vehicle was im-

pounded for 30 days.”The driver was also issued a

ticket for having no driver’s li-cence.Male arrested for threats

On Jan. 30, at 6:36 p.m., Grand Forks RCMP responded to a 911 call on Granby Road. Upon arrival it was determined that a 50-year-old male was intoxicated and had threatened to kill his spouse. The male had also attempted to light a fire in the residence. The male was arrested and held in police custody to go before a Judge.Suspicious vehicle checked

On Jan. 28, at 10:07 p.m., Grand Forks RCMP checked a suspicious vehicle parked along Central Ave-nue. Police arrested the 35-year-old male for possession of a controlled substance. “Further investigation revealed that the male was also intoxicated by drugs and was on conditions to not possess drugs,” said Crack.

The male was issued a 24 hour driving suspension and was held in police custody to appear in court on Feb. 1.

Grand Forks RCMP responded to 41 calls for service for the week Jan. 25-31.

This past weekend the GFSS Wolves boys curling team trav-elled to Invermere to take on the boy’s team from David Thompson Secondary School for the right to attend the B.C. Secondary School Curling Championships. Three games were scheduled to be played at the Invermere Curling Club, two on Saturday, Jan. 30 and one the next day if required.

The first game on Saturday morning saw GFSS take a quick 2 -0 lead after two ends of play. David Thompson Secondary (DTSS) came back strong taking one point in the third end and stealing two in the fourth end to have a one-point lead going into the break.

The fifth end saw GFSS take a single point to tie the game up. The sixth end resulted in blank so the game remained tied. DTSS stole a point in the seventh end to have the lead coming home in the final end of play. The final end saw DTSS

clinch the win, the fi-nal score being 4 - 3 for DTSS.

The Wolves showed up for the second game on Saturday after-noon ready to even the score. The first end went to DTSS which scored a single point. The Wolves then stepped up their game and scored four points in the second end.

The third end saw excep-tional play from the team lead-ing to a huge steal of five points for a 9 - 1 lead after only three ends of play. The Wolves con-tinued their strong play with another stolen end to go into the break with a very comfort-able 10-point lead.

DTSS was able to get a sin-gle point in the fifth end. In the sixth end the Wolves took an-other point to bring the score to 12 - 2. DTSS conceded the game.

The Sunday morning game was a must win for both teams to avoid elimination.

DTSS earned the first point on the first end. GFSS answered

back, taking two points in the second end. DTSS scored single points in both the third and fourth ends to go into the break up by one. The score after four ends of play was three for DTSS to two for the Wolves.

The Wolves came back af-ter the break to get their two points to take the lead for the first time. A single point was stolen in the sixth end by the Wolves. The point came as a re-sult of a tremendous shot deliv-ered by Skip Zane Bartlett. The score was 5 - 3 in favour of the Wolves after six ends of play.

The Wolves kept the pres-sure on DTSS and stole another point in the seventh end to be up by three points. The eighth end saw DTSS being run out of rocks and conceding the game.

The win captured the Koo-tenay Zone title for the Wolves. The team will now play in the B.C. Secondary School Champi-onships in Delta in March.

I am very excited for the Spe-cial Olympics regional quali-fiers swimming tournament in Kelowna, April 9. That gives us the chance to go to the BC Sum-mer Games 2017.

All the athletes are good swimmers. We really enjoy it. We swim at the Grand Forks Aquat-ic Centre. Cees is our coach and does a great job. The water is cold but we get used to it.

We start our practices by

warm-up exercises. We practice racing with our coach timing us.

I really enjoy doing the back-stroke and the butterfly. I really enjoy all my strokes. I am excit-ed for the Summer Games. We are training hard.

I am an excellent diver. That means you don’t do any splash when you enter the water. You come up under the water and you gain more distance for your start. No false starts are allowed. If anyone jumps ahead of the whistle, everyone has to go back to the wall and start again. In

front crawl race, some people start on the block. Some from beside the block and some in the water.

That’s what’s good about Special Olympics, you can do what works best for you, at least at qualifiers. Still, you have to finish races the right way or you may be disqualified. For breaststroke you have to touch the wall with two hands. All the other strokes you finish with one hand on the wall.

All the Grand Forks swim-mers will do excellent.

You won’t be bored when you do circuit training. This workout gets your heart rate up and strengthens your muscles at the same time.

You’ll move quickly through 8 - 10 exercise stations to work different muscle groups with little to no rest between stations.

You’ll do about 10 - 25 reps at each station, lasting between 30 seconds and three minutes, and then move on to the next station.

To keep things interesting, you can switch up the sequence, swap out different stations, and do it at the gym with equip-

ment, at home with dumbbells and resistance bands, or on a fitness trail by alternating push-ups and squats with brisk walk-ing or biking.

Allow at least 20 - 30 minutes for the workout and work at your own pace.

Earlybird Circuit is held Monday, Wednesday and Fri-

day mornings from 6 - 7 a.m. and Moderate Circuit class is held from 8 - 8:45 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday Moderate Circuit classes are held from 9 – 10 a.m. in the aquatic fitness room and Gentle Therapy is held in the arena fitness annex from 10:15 to 11am.

Evening Shape Up Circuit is held in the aquatic centre fitness room from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. start-ing Tuesday, Feb. 2 to Thursday, March 17. The fitness room will be closed for public use during this program time. You are more than welcome to drop in to the class or register for the season.

The Grand Forks Kung Fu Club has been around for near-ly 30 years after beginning as Temple Kung Fu under Grand Master Simon. The club trains in the White Dragon style of kung fu. Kazakoff said there are about six masters left from the origi-nal Temple Kung Fu, where the White Dragon style originated from. “We all trained under Grand Master Simon, who is ba-sically retired now,” said head in-structor Mike Kazakoff, who has been training for over 30 years. “The club began in Grand Forks in 1986 under Grand Master Si-mon and has been operating ever since.”

“It’s an amateur club,” said Kazakoff. “We generally train three times a week at the Senior’s Centre in City Park. We get a good deal from them. We have about a dozen members that have been with us for awhile.”

The club was a new addition to the annual Dance Extrava-ganza held Thursday at the GFSS auditorium. The club has been around for a number of years now but this was quite likely the first time they shared the stage with dance groups. The club,

as well as the Tai Chi club, was brought in to celebrate “move-ment” in the Boundary.

At the Dance Extravaganza, the club performed movements showcasing their style of kung fu. “We did several of the martial arts forms that are beneficial to your health,” he said. “The mo-tions are the ones we do in our club. Martial arts is a lot about motions. That’s how you rein-force your knowledge and get the most out of it.”

Kazakoff said that modern day martial arts students prac-tice kung fu mainly for the pro-motion of health and well-being, as well as peace of mind know-ing you can defend yourself if needed.

“However, there is a whole universe of knowledge bur-ied in the art that can only be gained through long and hard dedicated work and practice,” he said. “When you get that thirst for knowledge, you will quickly learn that you only get out of it what you are willing to put in.”

Kazakoff said the health and well-being comes about through practicing, being active and stretching. “The self-defence is a small part of it,” he said. “The health aspects are really what shines through. It’s all based on

natural movements. All the mo-tions we do build core power. You heal yourself: mind and body. That’s why I got into it. I wanted the health aspects.”

At age 75, Kazakoff said he has never felt better. “It keeps you flexible,” he said. “It keeps you young. I’m more flexible now than when I was in my 30s. It’s just through practicing, stretch-ing and doing everything in the program.”

The club is offering a gentle stretch and breathing form on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Senior’s Centre from 5:30 - 6 p.m.

“It was put together from one of the martial arts healing forms used by Shaolin monks to main-tain their health and well-being,” said Kazakoff. “By participating in and learning this very old style of low impact stretching and breathing form through regular practice you can energize your

body’s immune system and as-sist your body to heal itself natu-rally.”

Kazakoff said the forms are a series of slow moves that stimu-late the body and mind “which is essential for a complete and total body exercise.”

Cost for the stretching pro-gram is $2 for a drop-in fee, $1 for Senior’s Centre members. The stretching, as well as the club it-self, is open to anyone, any age.

Four Grand Forks resi-dents will be heading to New Brunswick to play in the na-tional Special Olympics Floor Hockey championships at the start of March.

The four (Charlie Kain, Mike Windsor, Brogran Be-liveau and Jake Raschpichler) will be joined by other play-ers throughout the province

who form Team BC. Coach-ing the team is another Grand Forks resident, Derek Taylor, who also coaches the local Special Olympics floor hock-ey squad. “It’s a big pairing,” said Taylor. “I coach the local team and from that I’ve taken four guys from here. We also have four players from Cres-ton, five from Burnaby and one from Trail. That makes up the B.C. team.”

Taylor said the Grand

Forks team first made waves two years ago when they qualified for the provincials, which took place last winter in Kamloops. “That’s where we first met up with the Cres-ton players,” he said. “We did well enough that they thought we should represent the region at provincials.”

The Grand Forks/Koo-tenay team ended up win-ning the gold medal at the provincials. “It was a pretty

big deal,” he said. “It’s quite competitive. People think it’s just an ordinary event for dis-abled people but we’ve had tryouts and cuts. These guys play their hearts out.”

Taylor said the team has been practicing hard for the national tournament, which takes place March 1-5 in Corner Brook, Newfound-land. They’ve played in two warm-up tournaments so

Great day for racing at Phoenix MountainThe Boundary’s own Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill welcomed 100 keen young-

sters on Jan. 24 to its leg of the Rio Tinto Nancy Greene Ski League slalom com-petition for the under 12 and under 14 categories.

Racers and spectators were treated to pristine weather conditions and en-joyed some excellent slalom techniques courtesy of the five ski clubs that make up the West Kootenay zone: Phoenix, Red Mountain (Rossland), Salmo, White Water (Nelson) and Summit Lake.

On Sunday, the teams travelled to Rossland, where over 200 skiers took to the course, and on Feb. 14 they will convene in Salmo for the competition there. On Feb. 28, the racing will switch to Whitewater and the zone finals will take place on Mar. 13 at Summit Lake.

far and done very well. Taylor thinks they have a good chance at winning nationals and repre-senting Canada at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2017 in Austria.

“They call us the Kootenay Storm because the majority of the team is from the Koo-tenays,” he said. “We went to a tournament in Vancouver recently and came first place. We just came back from one in Abbotsford, which was a little stiffer competition but we still ended up in first. So we’re 6-0 heading into nationals.”

Taylor said the team is play-ing Saskatchewan first, fol-lowed by the host team from Newfoundland which he ex-pects to be very tough. “New-foundland upset B.C .last time at nationals and we play them right off the bat,” he said. “It is their home province and they’ll be ready.”

The strength of the B.C. team is their depth as well as scoring prowess. “We have probably six of the strongest players in B.C.,” said Taylor. “One of our local guys, Charlie Cain, is the top scorer in the province. The last game we played Saturday, he scored seven goals. The guy runs into the 20s in goals scored each tournament. He’s very strong. That’s not to downplay the other players. They can all put the puck in the net.”

Taylor has been coach-ing Special O l y m p i c s hockey for five years. “Charlie is one of my best friends and when I found out they needed a hockey coach I thought I

should look into and the pas-sion just grew,” he said. “I played hockey most of my life. It’s been a big part of my life.”

Taylor said that coaching Special Olympics athletes has its challenges but is very re-warding. “The smiles on their faces—it’s just amazing,” he said. “You just don’t see the heart they play with in any pro-fessional sport. They play like they mean it. The teamwork and team play is just off the charts.”

Theatre society gets ready to bring Mary Poppins to the stage

Boundary Musical Theatre Society (BMTS) was formed a decade ago and has produced at least one musical per year since then, sometimes two. Some of the musicals pro-duced in the past have been The Sound of Music, Grease, Annie get your Gun, Footloose and Chicago.

The group is currently working hard on rehears-als and all the other myriad responsibilities required to bring the musical Mary Pop-pins to life on the GFSS stage.

Recently in an effort to produce the finest quality theatre possible, president Deb Baker phoned several other theatre groups in the province inquiring about the possibility of borrowing or renting costumes that would fit this production.

One of those groups was in the process of playing Mary Poppins to their community. Although they didn’t have any costumes available, they offered her professionally-built sets for approximately 85 per cent off of their value.

As these sets are of superi-or quality and of a nature that they can be used not only in this production but in many future musicals as well, the group couldn’t pass on such an amazing deal. However, since they are a nonprofit so-ciety, BMTS are now current-ly fundraising to help cover the costs. They are selling tickets through a licensed raf-fle to a Mary Poppins themed basket worth approximately $200. They have asked for do-nations from local businesses and have gratefully received a sizable donation from Com-munity Futures and several donations from other local businesses and people.

They are also running a donation page accessible at www.Gofundme.com, by typ ing in “Help us buy sets, by Jen Gargul.”

Purchasing the sets re-quired several members of the group to make a 20-hour trip to the Lower Mainland to pack the sets onto a truck. This on top of the two to three rehearsals a week and their regular jobs has many of them quite tired but still excited about the upcoming show.

Putting on a musical is an endeavor of love for the members of this group who commit to months of time on each production, from audi-tions to rehearsals, set work, costuming, voice lessons and choreography, it is a long and involved process done completely out of desire to keep local theatre alive in our small community.

This year the cast also

walked in the Christmas pa-rade.

The group has members who range in age from four years to 80 years old and also includes some diverse-ability young people in acting and back stage activities. The whole cast is extremely excit-ed for this production, with the quality of sets and cos-tumes, and with the lovely returning actress Jen Gargul playing Mary and the talent-ed and hardworking Aaron Baker doing the choreogra-phy and playing Bert.

Even the children in this musical have mastered the English accent and this prom-ises to be an enjoyable outing for patrons of all ages. Perfor-mances will be at 7 p.m. on March 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12, with 2 p.m. matinees on March 6 and 13. Boundary Musical Theatre Society hopes that everyone in Grand Forks and the surrounding area will at-

SUBMITTEDto the Grand Forks Gazette

tend a performance and support their local community theatre.

The sets have arrived! Boundary Musical Theatre Society members met on Saturday to erect the sets for the group’s upcoming production of Mary Poppins. Submitted photo
