Match Programme - Saturday 16th May

Welcome to Memorial Park for today’s Central League and Capital Premier League action. Stop Out and Kapiti Coast United are our visitors this week as league football returns after last weekend’s Chatham Cup round.

Grant Plumbing Petone have been playing some attractive football and continue to impress but we have been guilty of leaving points on the park in the past few weeks. The chances are being created and if we can improve our conversion rate, then we really can push for a Top 3 finish, and possibly even higher. Good luck today lads. A local derby is always tough and today will be no exception, so be prepared for 90 minutes of hard work!

The Reserves will be freshened from a week off and will be eager to follow up a good away win two weeks ago. We need maximum points over the next 2-3 games to help cement a mid table position and avoid the nervous battle we endured last season. Good luck to Scott and the lads. Especially over the next few games.

Women’s football continues to progress at Petone FC with some great results and a well run and well organised football committee. The 1st team have settled into Premier League life very well and with great support form the 2nd and 3rd teams, the future looks very bright indeed. The hypnotist fundraising event last weekend was also a great success so thank you to everyone involved for making it a fun and successful event.

I’d like to thank our Communication Team for the quality of work they produce each week including the website, our face book page, Code Blue and of course this match programme. The publications look great and certainly help to promote the club and our sponsors in a professional manner.

Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend. Remember play hard but play fair.

Craig DeadmanChairman, Petone Football Club

Welcome...

From The Balcony...

Sam Boyd

So yes, here we are at the greatest football ground in NZ! I’m up on the balcony! Can you see me? I’m waving. Oh that’s rude…Grant Plumbing Petone take on Stop Out in Central League action today and we have an old friend steadying the ship for the Red, Yellow and Blacks (as they are commonly known…). Chris Sambrooke is head coach and, as you should know, is a former first team centurion for Petone.I like Sambo. We have a similar sense of humour, both dress stylishly, and can perform very loud high fives when required. The only problem he has is he supports Liverpool. But as we have seen with Craig Deadman, although they support this team they still seem to be “ok” guys. No doubt they’ll be happy with their 5th placing in the EPL this year. Petone come into this game after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Waterside Karori in the Chatham Cup. Penalties are a bit silly aren’t they? A ball on a spot and a huge goal to pop it in? Simple. Ha! I once launched one on the airport tarmac when taking one at NZ’s second favourite football ground - Crawford Green. And who can forget the wonderful John Terry slipping in Moscow to let Manchester United scoot in to win the Champions League? Unlucky JT! Penalties...let’s pop them in the same category as binge drinking. You’re very confident leading into it but afterwards you usually feel pretty rubbish. It won’t be long till Petone are back on the road for a trip in the Kapiti Kruzer. The Kapiti Kruzer? Oh yes the KK! (no more Ks please). This little mini bus has a distinct whiff to it and the back seat hides many playing cards and loose change. It politely transports Petone around the North Island for matches against teams who are just a smidge to far to go see in an everyday car or ute. Next time you see the Kruzer, go up and kiss it on the bumper and say “hey thanks buddy for looking after these great men”.

C’mon the Blues!

Over the years Petone FC has had a number of players represent New Zealand at Senior and Age group level. The pathway for these players starts at the club with team training sessions and Advanced Training Sessions provided by Tom Randles – Petone’s own Director of Junior Football.

From 11th grade, players have the opportunity to be selected for Capital Football Federation trials based on coach recommendation and input from talent scouts. Those selected become part of the Hutt Federation team, consisting of approximately 15 players per age group. The players attend extra training sessions led by Capital Football coaches, which can be as many as three sessions a week in the summer months and is scaled back to one session per week during the winter season.

Game days are organised throughout the season with other Wellington Federation teams as well as teams from the Central Region (Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki). Once the players reach the 13th grade the boys’ trial for inclusion into the Federation level as the four Capital Federations combine into Fed A and B squads. The players can also be selected to attend NZ Football training camps during the April and September school holidays, known as National Talent Centres (NTC).

Recently a camp was held at Rathkeale College in Masterton during the second week of the school holidays. Petone had boys selected from the 2001 and 2002 age groups. Next year will be a key year for the 2001 boys as some may have the opportunity to trial for a wider U17 training squad for the 2017 U17 World Cup that will be held in India.

Junior football is a crucial part of any football club. At Petone FC we like to think we have one of the best, if not the best, junior football set-ups in the Wellington region. Richard Arkinstall has been Junior Management Chair for the last five years and has been at the helm as junior football has gone from strength to strength. Today we chat with Richard to get a quick breakdown of the junior side of things at Petone FC. His second favourite team recently ran into some trouble so maybe don’t bring that up next time you see him….

Position at Club and how long have you been in this role?Chair of the Junior Management Committee. My fifth year in the role.

Previous involvement at the club? For my sins I seem to have tackled every role there is within the junior section of the club – coach (co-coaching the 13th Settlers with Daryll Pickering), team manager, grade manager, committee member, junior chair. Was still playing with the Mighty Masters until tearing my calf 3 weeks ago!

Best thing that has happened at the club since your time in the above role? The structure, communication and programmes we have implemented within the junior section of the club to really lift the potential of our players. And the arrival of Angela Eglinton, what a marvel!!

Where do you see the club in the next 5 years?I see us as the premier club of choice within the Hutt Valley. Petone will be the club for which junior players want to play due to the development opportunities, culture and enjoyment they have playing here.

Who is your second favourite club?Queens Park Rangers! (everyone loves a dreamer, right!)

Petone Stonecutters in Action

Petone Women have had a very promising start to the season. We have expanded our membership to field three

teams for the first time in 3 years. Here’s a few words from our coaches, bringing you the latest on the ladies…

2015 Women’s Football

Powerex Petone 1st team have started the season strongly, sitting top of the Women’s Premier

League after four rounds. The girls have gelled as a team very quickly and their performances on the park are improving each week. The team had a fantastic away trip to Palmerston North in their latest game in the ASB Cup, coming up against Central League side, Massey. The girls managed to take the lead at 1 nil up going into the break. A couple of influential players from their team turned the score around and the game finished 3-1. Overall a great experience for all our girls.

Sam MorrisseyCoach, Powerex Petone

What a frustrating start to the season for the reserves! With two close defeats and no ball in the ole onion bag, along came game 3, another defeat. But at last we had found the back of the net. The following week saw a very close 3-2 defeat, the girls’ heads remained high and with a team drinks arranged, team spirit was flying high! Round 5 was upon us, and we were off the mark with a 4-1 win, followed up by a 4-0 win over Stop Out. With such a fantastic team and a great bunch of ladies, I’m sure we can keep the winning streak rolling.

Paul MartinCoach, Powerex Reserves

The Women’s 3rd team started the season as a new team in Division 3. The team has a mix of ages and abilities but has come together well. With four wins and a draw, they have already achieved their ambition of gaining promotion to Division 2 before the half-way point of the season. They will however undoubtedly face a tougher challenge in the second half of the year.

Jeremy Bowen - Coach, Power Rangers

Throughout the past 6 months, the club has worked very hard developing a new 3 Year Business Plan. This project took many hours and incorporated 16 workshops with involvement from a wide variety of club members and officials. Ray Bell was appointed project manager and did a fantastic job coordinating and facilitating many meetings and I would like to congratulate and thank him for his tremendous work. The end result is a very thorough and professional plan that will help drive the club forward. I am very pleased to advise the Management Committee have endorsed and adopted the plan and have already begun working with the document.

During the planning process, the project team identified 8 key areas of business and invited a wide range of club members to take part in interviews, workshops and discussions on each subject. The response from our members was great and we now have a truly inclusive plan that incorporates the best ideas and plans from those workshops. The eight key areas of business are as follows: Football, Hilton Petone Tournament, Off-field Activities, Venue, Communication, Facilities, Finance and Governance and Management. Sub-committees will be established to manage these key areas and we will be approaching members to either join a sub-committee and/or assist with specific activities. I encourage your involvement.

On our website you can find an easy to read 2 page summary of the key points from the analysis and plan. There are detailed strategies and actions associated with these key points and we are currently setting priorities and timelines for the action points. There were a tremendous amount of hours and hard work dedicated to this project and on behalf of the Management Committee, I would like to thank everyone who was involved for your hard work and for your passion for Petone FC. I am looking forward to unearthing new volunteers and managing the continued growth our our club through this plan.
