Evaluation

The quality of work is fairly low as it didn’t have much planning and was done on a mobile phone camera, but in a real shoot the quality can be excellent especially when the idea is planned out correctly and all the correct equipment is used, the quality for children’s books can be improved even more by different styles being used mainly like collages, that look very artistic. Because of this quick planning process, this means that it didn’t take up a long production time. Production time of a real shoot may take up to a day to finish because of the setting out of lighting and getting the perfect picture. The age of the audience that photography is used is in children's books, young children 0-7 years approximately, it’s used because they can add those pictures up to real life so they learn. I think this would usually be used in books that adults read to children. Resources required for this was a camera and a model in this case. But computers and lighting and maybe even a studio would need to be used in a real shoot, photo-editing software would also be necessary.

Evaluation

The quality of my illustration is fairly good considering I haven’t got a great ability in being able to draw. But the quality can be improved and different methods like tracing hard features can also help in the accuracy. The quality in real production is very good, some illustrator’s work can look very stylised and artistic. The speed of this production is slow comparing to photography, as it takes a long time for the idea to be thought of and if it goes, the drawing be in scale and all others things that make sure the style of the drawings suit the story and the target audience. Similar products would use illustrations are children's books and comic books, as skilled artists would draw every picture. The resources that are required are pencils, pens, paints, oils, chalk and other artistic materials.

Evaluation

In these photos I think the quality of work is good, I think there is a lot of attention to make the picture look like a cartoon, but not unrecognisable. I also really like the horizontal lines in the last picture over the face, making it look almost drawn in and shaded. The speed of the production was very fast and it doesn’t take long to to put the effect you want on the pictures. But it does take a bit more time working out which effects you want, what are suitable and what looks most effective. Similar products would be seen in comics or graphic novels, using this effect because it takes a lot less time and is more accurate and drawing. The audience would be mainly adults, especially if it was a graphic novel, but maybe used in a comic for children. Resources used were very minimal as I just used a computer.

Evaluation

The quality of the work in this I think is good as there is lots of detail and shading and looks very similar to the real photo, but just a cartoon version. The quality of rotoscoping can vary a lot, the time taken in production has a lot to do with the quality of work, the longer taken on the product the better quality it will be. Also the skill of the person making the product also has a large effect on the end product, the more skilled the person the more effective the picture will look. Rotoscoping can look a lot like cartoons if done in a certain style and then look very realistic when done in another style. This rotoscoped image is done in a more realistic style, but still has a cartoon element. I think the more appropriate audience for rotoscoping would be adults as I think children would become confused and wouldn’t understand that it is a cartoon and not a real person. The resources required for this is just a computer and editing software, like photo-shop to rotoscope the images.

Overeall Evaluation

How do you feel the experiments went? Are there some which you feel could be suited to your style of product? Are there any which you feel just will not work? Why is this? I think the experiments went well, especially the illustration one because I can start to find a drawing style and incorporate that with photography to make an arty, stylised story book for young children to be read to. I feel like the cartoon and rotoscoping won’t work, not because the experiments weren’t successful, but because they don’t fulfil the kind of style I want to use in my children’s story book.

Are there areas where you need to practice further in order to master the technique? Which areas are these and how could you go about it?I think I will need to practice at simple line drawings to make them look effective and artistic, so they work with the whole style of the book. To improve I need to do some research into drawing techniques and artists work and how they go about drawing. I also need to make sure the photography and drawing combination works as a collage and for a child’s book. Looking at illustrations on Google and the different styles used has really opened me up to not just thinking children’s books need to look like blocks of colours and that they can look artistic, something that the child and parent would appreciate.
