understand spoken English, especially when spoken fast.

Sentence stress is what gives English its rhythm or “beat”.

Sentences stress is accent on certain words within a sentence.

Sentences have two types of word:o Content words

o Structure words

Content words – important words that carry the meaning or sense.

Structure words – simple words that make the sentences correct grammatically.

Word Stress

In English, do not say each syllable with the same force or strength.

One word, stress one syllable. Say one syllable very loudly and all

the other syllables very quietly. Syllables that are not stressed are

weak or small or quiet. If use word stress in your speech, will

instantly and automatically improve your pronunciation and comprehension.

Important rules about word stress

One word, one stress. (one word

cannot have two stresses. So if

hear two stresses, you have

heard two words, not one word)

The stress is always on a vowel

(a,e,i,o,u).
