Most people in Lawrence believe that thesituation between School Superintendent WilfredoT. Laboy and School Committeewoman AmyMcGovern should have never come to this pointof becoming defendants in a criminal suit.
Mr. Laboy has been a strong-handadministrator who allows no misbehavior fromschool teachers and perhaps Mayor Michael J.Sullivan should follow his example.
Remember when in March of 2003, substituteteacher Newman Montilla taped the mouths of 20students because they were talking too much? Shewas immediately fired by Laboy.
On April of 2001, Edwin Colon was placedon unpaid administrative leave immediately afterhe was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl at theFrost School. The city was prompt to pay thefamily $250,000 secretly but by May of 2003, hewas acquitted. The girl recanted and admitted thatshe had lied. He never got his job back.
But, the case that defines Laboy’s evildictatorship is that of Robert Fitzgerald, theassistant principal at South Lawrence East School

It’s time to follow
Laboy’s leadwho was accused in December of 2002 of stealingsome musical instruments. Within one month Mr.Fitzgerald was fired and the school departmentrefused to allow him to collect unemploymentbenefits to support his family. When he was foundinnocent in early 2003, Laboy refused to hire himback.
Today, Wilfredo Laboy is begging forforgiveness. How come he was not willing toforgive and forget those cases? His ego andarrogance gave him the confidence to destroy liveswithout mercy.
The residents of Lawrence should demandfrom Mayor Sullivan that he exercises the samemanagement style that Laboy used with hisemployees to correct their wrongdoings.
Following his own lead, the Superintendentof Schools Wilfredo T. Laboy should be fired but,since we know that the rubber stamp we have forSchool Committee will not do it, Mayor Sullivanmust exercise his authority and place him onadministrative leave without pay pending theoutcome of his trial.

Pero, el caso que mejor define la malévoladictadura de Laboy es el de Robert Fitzgerald, el directorasistente en la South Lawrence East School que fue acusadoen diciembre del 2002 de robarse unos instrumentosmusicales. En cuestión de un mes el Sr. Fitzgerald quedódespedido y el departamento escolar se negó a permitirlecobrar beneficios de desempleo para mantener a su familia.Cuando la corte falló a su favor declarándolo inocente aprincipios del 2003, Laboy se negó a darle trabajo denuevo.
Hoy, Wilfredo Laboy está rogando ser perdonado.¿Cómo es que no estuvo dispuesto a perdonar en esoscasos? Su ego y su altanería le dieron la confianzanecesaria para destruir vidas sin misericordia.
Los residentes de Lawrence deben demandar queel Alcalde Sullivan utilice el mismo estilo administrativoque Laboy usó con sus empleados para corregir sus errores.
Siguiendo su propia iniciativa, el SuperintendenteEscolar Wilfredo T. Laboy debe ser despedido, pero comosabemos que los incapaces miembros del Comité Escolarno lo harán, el Alcalde Sullivan debe ejercitar su autoridady ponerlo bajo licencia administrativa sin pago hasta queel juicio termine.

El altercado en las oficinasadministrativas del Departamento Escolar,el pasado junio, 2005, entre elSuperintendente Escolar de Lawrence,Wilfredo T. Laboy y la Miembro delComité Escolar Amy C. McGovern,terminó en la Corte del Distrito deLawrence, donde ambos fueronencausados de asalto al otro. Tanto elSuperintendente Laboy como AmyMcGovern se declararon inocentes de loscargos.
El Superintendente Laboy,acompañado de su esposa e hija política,entraron a la corte a través de un grupode manifestantes en la esquina de lasCalles Methuen y Pemberton portandoletreros con mensajes como “Los NiñosPrimero”, “Es Tiempo de Avanzar”, etc.En su lugar, McGovern se bajó de su autoen la esquina de la Calle Canal, evadiendoa los manifestantes.
De acuerdo con Amy McGovern, ellaha estado bajo cantidad de presión para que retirelos cargos en contra de Laboy. “Yo creo de todocorazón que para ser un modelo responsable y moral,yo debo dejar que este asunto sea ventilado en unforo público y por lo tanto, yo estoy preparada paraser interrogada públicamente - no importa si esteasunto va a juicio”, declaró McGovern en un recientedocumento publicado en Rumbo el 22 de agosto.
El 25 de agosto, el Eagle-Tribune reportó que,después de una larga reunión con la junta de editores,el Superintendente Laboy ofreció a McGovern“resolver la disputa de asalto con una disculpa”.McGovern rehusó la oferta y reiteró a Rumbo que,“Yo debo afrontar el proceso y no esperar por tratosa puerta cerrada”.
Después de una corta comparencia en la corte,ambos, Laboy y McGovern se marcharon, dejandola sala de la corte casi vacía, ya que la mayoría delos que estaban apoyando a Laboy lo acompañaron

Afuera, Laboy fue recibido por el grupo que seencontraba protestando fuera de la corte.Originalmente se creyó que estaban en favor de unarreglo, pero en aquel momento fue evidente que conlos gritos de “Estamos contigo” y “Estamos aquí paraapoyarte”, en realidad estaban para apoyar a Laboy.Lleno de agradecimiento Laboy les contestó enespañol: “Gracias, muchas gracias, saldremos de estocon la ayuda de Dios”.

El pasado domingo, 28 de agosto,2005, se celebró en Haverhill, MA el 5toFestival Anual Latino, con un variadoelenco artístico local e internacional, que ajuzgar por la nutrida concurrencia, fue unéxito total.
El comité organizador del festival, alfrente del cual se encuentra Mari CarmenCintrón, ha trabajado duro, durante losúltimos años, para mejorar la calidad delfestival, un espectáculo donde todos loslatinos se sientan identificados de unamanera u otra con su cultura, por medio delas artes.
Con ese propósito, este año el festivalpresentó los bailes típicos del BalletMexicano Xuchipilli de Boston, elmerengue quisquellano de Raulín Rosendo,la salsa del boricua Paquito Guzmán y lamúsica contagiosa del venezolanoAlexander. El evento, efectuado en elParque GAR comenzó a las 12 del mediodíay se extendió hasta las 8 de la noche.
Entre los talentos locales quecontribuyeron al éxito del festival seencuentran: “The Jackie Cruz Project”,Gasolina Girls, Batuteras del MovimientoPuertorriqueño, Taller Bohique y Ocasio’sBlack Belt Leadership Academy.

directivos de Casa Dominicana invitaron aLouis Farrah, director de la FunerariaFarrah, una de las más antiguas en la ciudad,a explicar un plan de seguro funeral quetiene esta funeraria. La Funeraria Farrah, según explicó suDirector, el Sr. Louis Farrah, ha venidosirviendo a la comunidad de Lawrence pormás de 100 años desde su antiguo localsituado en el 170 de la Calle Lawrence.Fundada por su abuelo, con la ayuda de supadre que comenzó a trabajar allí a la edadde 9 años, la funeraria está ahora bajo sudirección en su nuevo local de la calleLawrence #133.
El Sr. Farrah explicó que ha hechocontacto con la American- CanadianAssociation, una compañía de seguros sinánimo de lucro con oficinas en Manchester,New Hampshire, y a través de ellos estánhaciendo estos seguros funerales. “Pormuchos años hemos servido a variascomunidades, ahora estamos trabajandopara servir a la comunidad latina deLawrence”, dijo Farrah.
Entre lo explicado por el Sr. Farrahreferente al seguro funeral, pudimos anotar:1. El dinero que usted paga paraasegurarse no va a la funeraria. Se deposita
en una cuenta a nombre del asegurado y semantiene allí hasta que lo necesite.2. Los interesados en asegurarse debenescoger el tipo de entierro que desean tener,tipo de ataúd, servicio funeral, etc., con elobjeto de llegar a un acuerdo en cuanto elprecio total se refiere.3. En la actualidad, el costo promedio deun funeral gira alrededor de $6,500.4. La edad del asegurado puedeinfluenciar en el costo.5. Los asegurados comienzan a hacerpagos por 60 meses (5 años). Una vezterminado de pagar, ya no se paga más.6. El dinero estará en depósito hasta quelo necesite. No importa cuando muera, elentierro no subirá de precio.7. La compañía no pide certificado desalud al asegurado. Todo el mundo califica.
8. Si usted muere durante el primer año,la compañía paga el 25%. Si fallece alcomienzo del 2do año, paga el 75% de lapóliza y si fallece entre el tercer y quintoaño, la compañía paga el 100%.
Farrah no recomienda una edad específicapara hacer un seguro mortuorio. “Loimportante es hacerlo cuando sea necesario,pero sobre todo, si usted puede pagarlo”,dijo y añadió, “el dinero que usted hayapagado por el seguro es su dinero. The scuffle in the School Department’sadministrative offices back in June, 2005,between Lawrence School SuperintendentWilfredo T. Laboy and School CommitteeMember Amy C. McGovern, brought themboth to the Lawrence District Court, wherethey were arraigned of assault to each other.They both claimed to be innocent of thecharges.
Superintendent Laboy, accompaniedby his wife and daughter-in-law, walkedinto the Court House through a group ofprotesters at the corner of Methuen andPemberton Streets, holding signs withmessages like “Children First”, “Is time tomove on”, etc. McGovern instead got offat the Canal Street corner avoiding theprotesters.
According to Amy McGovern, she hasbeen under a lot of pressure to give up thecharges against Laboy. “I believewholeheartedly that in order to be aresponsible and moral role model, I mustallow this matter to be settled in a publicforum and because of that, I am preparedto face public scrutiny – even if this mattergoes to trial”, declared McGovern in arecent statement published in Rumbo onAugust 22.
On August 25th, the Eagle-Tribunereported that, after a long meeting with theireditorial board, Superintendent Laboyoffered McGovern “to settle theircounterclaims of assault with an apology”.McGovern refused to settle and reiterated

to Rumbo that “I must stand up for dueprocess and I must not look for anybackroom deals”.
After the short court appearance, bothLaboy and McGovern left, leaving thecourtroom almost empty behind them, sincemost of the Laboy supporters accompaniedhim into the courtroom. Among themReverend José Santos Jr. and his wife,Susan Santos, from Centro de Adoración.Reverend Victor Jarvis, Pastor, EbenezerChurch was also with Laboy’s supporters.Laboy was greeted by the group ofprotesters that originally were thought tobe in favor of a settlement outside of thecourt, but it was evident at that moment thatthey were, in fact, in support of Laboy asthey yelled in Spanish, “We are with you”,“We are here to support you”. Laboy gladlyreplied, “Thank you, we will get out of thiswith God’s help”, also in Spanish.

Hoy, debidamente acreditado ante elDepartamento de Estado de este país y justoa un año de haber asumido el cargo en lasede consular dominicana, el honorablecónsul dominicano se apresta a poner enmarcha un plan destinado a expandir losservicios consulares.
Domínico Cabral dijo que en su primeraño como cónsul se empeñó en recuperarla imagen del Consulado, a consolidar losservicios que este ofrece y en mantenercontacto con la comunidad dominicana quereside en las diferentes ciudades en esteestado. “Ahora lo que haremos es llegar alugares donde hasta ahora no hemos podidollegar como ocurre en ciudades del estadode New Hampshire, donde residen muchosdominicanos, al igual que en las ciudadesde Lynn y Worcester”, explicó.
“Pretendemos solicitar los permisospara que los servicios consulares móvilespuedan llegar a esas comunidades”, destaca.Como una manera de fortalecer losservicios consulares y de no dejar de brindar
los mismos, Cabral ha establecido queaquellas personas que no puedan llegar, porrazones de enfermedad hasta la sedeconsular recibirán la asistencia en sus casas.“Enviaremos a un miembro de la misiónconsular autorizado para que asista a esaspersonas”.

“En nuestro caso tuvimos que viajarhasta la República Dominicana y completarel proceso, dado el status que teníamos deciudadano estadounidense”, dijo.

Las Contrataciones con el GobiernoSobrepasaron la Meta Establecida paraNegocios Pequeños
Los negocios pequeñosestadounidenses lograron una cifra récordde $69,230 millones en contratos primariosfederales el año pasado, superando en másde 6 por ciento el récord anterior, dijo hoyel administrador de la Agencia Federal parael Desarrollo de la Pequeña Empresa (SBA,por sus siglas en inglés), Héctor V. Barreto.Los contratos representaron 29.03 porciento de dólares asignados de contratosfederales primarios y 43.7 por ciento deacciones primarias de contratación delgobierno en el año fiscal 2004.
El informe emitido por el Centro deInformación sobre Contratos Federales(FPDC, por sus siglas en inglés) refleja queel total de las contrataciones federales en2004 alcanzó la cifra de $299,900 millonesen 9,970,000 contratos. Los negociospequeños obtuvieron 4,360,000 contratospor un valor de $69,230 millones.
“El informe muestra que el gobiernono sólo alcanzó sino sobrepasó su propiameta al otorgar más contratos que nuncaantes a los negocios pequeñosestadounidenses”, dijo el AdministradorBarreto. “Pero todavía podemos lograr másque esto. Aunque el gobierno federalalcanzó sus metas, yo creo que todavíapodemos mejorar y permitir que aún másnegocios pequeños compitan por más
contratos federales”.De los $299,900 millones otorgados en
contratos federales, cerca de $210,700millones, es decir más de 70 por ciento, losotorgó el Departamento de Defensa. Dichodepartamento dio contratos por $46,900millones - cerca de 22.27 por ciento detodos los contratos- a la pequeña empresa.
El informe del FPDC reflejó que losnegocios desaventajados sobrepasaron lameta de 5 por ciento, al lograr 6.18 porciento de todo el dinero asignado acontratos federales, con un total de $18,540millones. Los participantes en el Programade Desarrollo Empresarial 8(a) recibieron$8,440 millones en contratos, o 2.8 porciento del total. Contratos a empresaspequeñas en comunidades afectadaseconómicamente de una manera negativa,a través del Programa HUBZone de la SBA,aumentaron su participación en 40 porciento, a $4,780 millones.

Si no fuera por la señoraCindy Sheehan, la madre de un soldadonorteamericano matado en la guerra de Irakque quiere charlar con el presidente yhacerle preguntas difíciles sobre la pérdidade su hijo y casi dos mil otros y los quincemil heridos de los que nadie quieren hacerpreguntas, usted no pensaría que tenemosun presidente que trabaja. A lo mejortenemos un presidente que lo hacesolamente parte del tiempo.
Pero no se apuren; agarren sus caballosDemócratas y sus aspiraciones. Ese no esel único retraso este verano. Usted noescucha a los Demócratas hablar seriamentesobre las soluciones a esos asuntostampoco; ellos están todavía tratando dedefinir qué es lo que está pasando. Recuerdo a Doña Maria...En el verano del 1950 o algo por ahí,
no estoy muy seguro de lo que el algo fue-me estoy poniendo viejo-mi familia usabapasar un mes o dos del verano en una playacercana a la Habana en Cuba llamadaBaracoa. No era una localidad para ricos,era en realidad para la clase media. Lapoblación consistía de nosotros losveraneantes y los locales y en realidad nosllevábamos muy bien. Eso fue mucho antesde que el proletariado se convirtiera en unafuerza en Cuba y arruinara las cosas paratodos nosotros, incluso ellos mismos.
Recuerdo a Doña María. Era unaabuela local ochentona; y era una imagenpermanente del pueblo por lo que a mimente joven le pareció ser una eternidad.Amistosa, honesta en la expresión,mascadora de tabaco, era madre, abuela ybisabuela no solo para su familia de
pescadores sino para nosotros losmuchachos también. Cierto día se enfermóde gravedad. La noticia se regó como polvo;supimos que iba a morir pronto.
Frente a su humilde casa situada en laúnica calle de doble vía que siguiendo elcontorno del mar pasaba frente a su humildecasa, se pusieron dos signos de trafico queleían: “Silencio por favor. Hay una personamuy grave aquí.” Los autos y nuestrasbicicletas se movían más lentos frente a lacasa respetando su condición y nosotros losmuchachos decidimos que teníamos quecallar, nuestros gritos usuales reducidos amurmullos. Desde aquella ocasión tengo elsentimiento extraño de que uno tiene queestar callado cuando la muerte nos rodea, ytodavía no se por qué. Desde luego,eventualmente Doña María murió.
No había tubos, no máquinas; noempleomanía hospitalaria de alto salariorodeando a Doña María, solo amigos yfamiliares que iban y venían. No era unaépoca en la que la tecnología lo mantenía auno atado a nada. Uno se enfermaba ymoría, sencillamente. No existíanargumentos intelectuales sobre la calidadde la existencia, testamentos de vida, o siuno podía elegir agarrarse de esta vida parasiempre.
No había HMOs, camarógrafos detelevisión o entrevistas en tiempo deprimera hora. Las cámaras del congreso oel senado no trataban de impresionarnos ydecirnos como debíamos vivir o morir.
Ningún presidente se despertaba en mediode la noche para tomar un avión y mantenera Doña María viva. La tecnología no teniaparte alguna en nuestras vidas. Nosotrosvivíamos o moríamos…
Gusanos de ComputadorasEse era otro mundo del que no se
escuchaba mucho en aquellos días calientesde verano. Los gusanos eran esasdesafortunadas criaturas resbalosas que losmuchachos colgábamos de nuestras varasde pescar para coger mojarras. Era unaironía interesante: los gusanos tenían quemorir para que los peces se pudieran coger;y morir también para que nosotrospudiéramos vivir. Debe haber unsignificado filosófico muy profundo en esaspalabras, pero no estoy seguro cuál es.

Nosotros ignorábamos quetodavía existía alguien usando ese sistemade operaciones; ahora lo sabemos. ¿Ustedme quiere decir que todos los usuarios decomputadoras no han convertido sussistemas al nuevo y más poderoso WindowsXP? ¡Tontos! La buena noticia es que lospiratas informáticos se están quedando atrásen su tecnología. La prensa estabaescandalizada. Todos los comentaristas deprogramas noticiosos notaban y sepreguntaban con alarma y curiosidad elefecto que este nuevo “gusano” significaríapara su vida y la mía. Los veranos lentosno tienen fin.
Por varias horas cesamos de hablar delhambre, los que mueren en la guerra, ladeclaración de emergencia de dos estadosdel oeste de los Estados Unidos porque nopueden controlar sus fronteras. Nuestrosdiscos duros en la computadora sevolvieron más importantes porque estamosfamiliarizados con ellos en nuestra rutinadiaria. El gusano de lascomputadoras se riega y se apodera de losdiscos duros convirtiéndolos en discosblandos y sofocando nuestrascomputadoras como si estuviera tratandode decirnos algo en un mensaje quedeberíamos descifrar. ¿Quién sabe? A lomejor nos obliga a salir del cuarto denuestras oficinas y movernos a nuestroslechos. Estoy convencido de que esodeleitaría a algunos esposos y esposas.¡Hola mi amor; tienes e-mail! Parece quelos peligros irreales que no entendemos otememos son más reales que aquellos conlos que estamos familiarizados.

On August 24th, 2005, Mayor/Candidate Michael J. Sullivan openedhis re-election campaign headquarters,located at 320 Essex Street, inLawrence.
According to Mayor/CandidateSullivan, this will be a workingheadquarter where people can pick upsigns, bumper stickers, campaignliterature and related information.
Standing on a chair, Sullivanaddressed his supporters, asking themfor their votes. Briefly, Sullivanrepeated what he said a week before atOne Mill Restaurant during a fund-raiser held August 16th describing asaccomplishments of his administration:
� The building of a watertreatment plant that is going to servethe people of Lawrence for the next80 to 100 years.� The high school, on budget, ontime, with kids hopefully moving inby September 2006.� Rebuilding the VeteransMemorial Stadium, a city eyesore fordecades.
Mayor/Candidate Sullivan gavecredit to those who work for the cityfor their hard work, and thanked all theguests for their attendance.“Remember, signs don’t vote. Peoplevote. This year we have two veryvaluable candidates who have done awonderful job at the Council, but I needyour vote”, said Mayor/CandidateSullivan.

Parado en una silla, Sullivan se dirigió a sus simpatizadores,pidiéndoles su voto. Brevemente, Sullivan repitió lo que dijo unasemana antes en el Restaurante One Mill Street. Durante una fiestade recaudación de fondos para su campaña, llevada a cabo el 16de agosto, describiéndolos como éxitos de su administración, talescomo:
� La construcción de una nueva planta de tratamiento de aguaque servirá a los residentes de Lawrence por los próximos 80-100 años.� La escuela superior está siendo construida dentro delpresupuesto y el tiempo estimado y se estima que los alumnos laocuparán en septiembre, 2006.� La reconstrucción del Veterans Memorial Stadium, que hasido una vergüenza para la ciudad en las últimas décadas.

Todos los veranos, estudiantes de todaslas edades esperan ansiosos por lasvacaciones para poder olvidar los rigoresde la disciplina, itinerario y dormir hastatarde. Sin embargo, un grupo de estudiantesproviniendo de todo el país pasaron diezdías desde el 14 hasta el 23 de julio enBentley College participando en unentrenamiento intensivo similar alprograma de televisión CSI.
Elizabeth Patiño, graduada de laescuela Timony de Methuen, es una jovende catorce años que comenzará en PhillipsAcademy en setiembre y ella asistió a laconferencia CSI Lead-America enWaltham. “Fue una experienciamaravillosa. La conferencia me enseñómucho sobre liderazgo; cosas como el porqué es importante ser un líder y lo que debohacer para serlo”, dijo llena de júbilo.
La misión de LeadAmerica estransformar a la próxima generación degente joven de este mundo inspirándolos,educándolos y enseñándoles los valoreséticos y los principios así como la actitud ydestrezas de lo que es liderazgo. Lapregunta no es si estos estudiantes seránlíderes sino cómo lo harán - qué valores yprincipios utilizarán al hacer decisionesimportantes.
Los estudiantes deben solicitar entradaen este programa, reunir la documentaciónrequerida incluyendo cartas derecomendación de sus maestros y sus notasescolares antes de ser aceptados. Tienenvarios programas con diferentes tópicospara escoger. Allí aprenden a pensar,discutir y debatir complejos temas globalesy hacer decisiones que requieren la mayorbrevedad posible.
Como Elizabeth planea estudiar leyesen alguna de sus ramas con la meta final deentrar en el FBI, ella escogió el Programade CSI. “Yo soy colombiana ycompletamente bilingüe en español. Creoque puedo ser una buena agente del FBI.”También quiere estudiar el idioma ruso paraser más valiosa aún.

Es aquí donde laciencia y el verdadero mundo se unen,donde los científicos salen de suslaboratorios y aplican todas sus teorías alos problemas y donde la vida y la muerteestán en balance. Ya sea examinando balas,recopilando huellas digitales, o analizandoDNA, los estudiantes se envuelven conprominentes expertos forenses y trabajanen las más modernas técnicas deinvestigaciones científicas.
“Aprendí mucho sobre Investigacionesen Escenas de Crimen (Crime SceneInvestigation - CSI) de los casos simuladosy charlas que nos dieron durante los diezdías de la conferencia. No solamente misconocimientos cambiaron mientras estuveen la conferencia sino que yo cambiétambién. En ese tiempo maduré, miconfianza en mí misma aumentó y aprendía ser más sociable. Hice muchas amistadesde todo el país con los cuales mantengocontacto. En mi grupo de quince habíanestudiantes de diez estados diferentes:Massachusetts, New Jersey, Mississippi,Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, Texas,Delaware, Pennsylvania y Connecticut”,me dijo.
En la simulación de una escena decrimen ponen los conocimientosinvestigativos que aprendieron en lossalones de clases a trabajar. Los equiposconducen un análisis completo de unaescena de crimen incluyendoreconstrucción tridimensional,reconstrucción facial, análisis balístico,análisis de fibras, análisis de manchas desangre, huellas digitales, análisis de DNA,exámenes forenses médicos, análisis dedocumentos y mucho más. Ellosentrevistan a testigos y sospechosos,mientras que tratan de aclarar el crimen ytratan de presentar los resultados al Fiscalde Distrito con su investigación finalizada.
Junto a eso, tenían largas horas ytrabajo muy duro. Se levantaban tempranoen la mañana, asistieron a charlas y teníanclases todo el día. “Todo estuvo muy bienorganizado”, me dijo. Durante todo eltiempo hubo respeto y seriedad y estosjóvenes tenían que vestir en forma casualpero profesional y sin sneakers.
“Esta conferencia cambió mi vida parasiempre. De todas las charlas y actividadesen las que participé, aprendí que yo puedohacer la diferencia en el mundo o por lomenos en mi comunidad”, me aseguróElizabeth. “Pero eché de menos a mifamilia y la cocina de mi madre.”
Elizabeth quiere hacerlo de nuevo elaño próximo. El costo de asistir a una deestas sesiones es $1,800. Elizabeth recibióuna beca de $300 y como bien dice ella,“Mi familia entera me ayudó con ladiferencia.” LeadAmerica compensa a losalumnos que después de la conferenciatratan de hacer algo por sus comunidades.Les dan puntos que en un final resultan enuna beca de la mitad o quizás una beca totalpara asistir a otra conferencia deLeadAmerica. “Ahora que voy a estar enla escuela secundaria, me darán créditosuniversitarios por asistir.”

Every summer, students of all ageslook forward to vacations where they canforget about the rigors of discipline,schedules and sleep late. Yet, a group ofstudents from all over the country spentten days from July 14 to the 23 at BentleyCollege participating in an intensivetraining similar to the CSI televisionshow.
Elizabeth Patiño, a Timony Schoolgraduate in Methuen, is a fourteen year-old entering the ninth grade at PhillipsAndover Academy this comingSeptember and she attended the CSILead-America Conference in Waltham.“It was an amazing experience. Theconference taught me a lot aboutleadership, such as why it is important tobe a leader and what I can do to be one,”she said joyfully.
LeadAmerica’s mission is totransform our world’s next generation ofyoung leaders by inspiring, educating andinstilling in them ethical and principledleadership values, attitudes and skills.The question is not whether thesestudents will lead, but how will they lead- what values and principles will they callupon to make important decisions andchoices.
Students must apply to be admittedinto this program, gather the requireddocumentation including letters ofrecommendation from teachers andschools marks, before they can beaccepted. They have several programswith different topics to choose from.Students learn to think on their feet,discuss and debate complex global issuesand make critical split-second decisions.
Since Elizabeth plans to study lawin some form with the goal of enteringthe FBI, she chose the CSI Program. “Iam Colombian and fully bilingual inSpanish. I think I can be a good FBIagent.” She also plans to study Russianto be even more valuable.
Few professions call for as muchtechnical knowledge, critical thinking,and strategic teamwork as forensicscience. This is where science meets thereal world, where scientists step out ofthe laboratory and apply their theories toproblems and where life and death areon the line. Whether examining bullets,collecting latent fingerprints, oranalyzing DNA, students meet andinteract with prominent forensic experts
and work on the cutting edge ofinvestigative science.
“I learned a lot about Crime SceneInvestigation (CSI) from simulations andnumerous lectures that were giventhroughout the 10 day conference. Notonly my knowledge changed while in theconference but I changed as well. At thisconference my maturity grew, myconfidence increased, and I learned howto be more sociable. I made many newfriends from all over the country, whomI still talk to. Just in my group of fifteenthere were people from ten differentstates: Massachusetts, New Jersey,Mississippi, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois,Texas, Delaware, Pennsylvania, andConnecticut,” she said.
In the Crime Scene Simulation theyput the investigational tools learned in theclassroom to use. The teams conduct afull analysis of a crime scene including3-dimensional reconstruction, facialreconstruction, ballistic analysis, fiberanalysis, blood spatter analysis,fingerprinting, DNA analysis, medicalforensics, document analysis and more.They interview witnesses and suspects,as they try to unravel the crime and try topresent their findings to a DistrictAttorney at a final inquest.
Along with that, there were longhours and hard work. They got up veryearly in the morning, attended lecturesand had classes all day. “Everything wasvery well organized,” she said. There wasrespect and seriousness the entire timeand these youngsters even had to wearbusiness casual attire. No sneakers.
“This conference changed my lifeforever. From all the lectures andactivities that I participated, I learned thatI can make a difference in the world oreven just in my community,” Elizabethassured me. “But I was very homesickand missed my mother’s cooking.”
Elizabeth wants to do it again nextyear. The cost to attend one of thesesessions is $1,800. Elizabeth received a$300 scholarship and as she says, “Myentire family pitched in for thedifference.” LeadAmerica rewardsalumni who after the conferences try tomake a difference in their communities.They give points which eventuallyamount to either a half or full paidLeadAmerica Conference. “Now that I’llbe in high school, I’ll get college creditfor this.”

Temi Devers estaba destinado a ser unaestrella. Desde muy temprana edad, suamor por el baile y cuando tenía seis añosde edad, Temi ya estaba tomando clases debaile con Leonor Sánchez y después conQuity Morgan de la Academia de Ballet deLawrence.
En una época en que los niños denuestra comunidad latina no piensan entomar clases de baile, Temi fue lainspiración y varios de ellos se matricularonhaciéndose de nombre con su arte.
Los padres de Temi, TemistoclesDevers y Josefa “Fifi” García siempre sehan preocupado por la educación de sushijos siendo la preocupación principal ensu hogar. Temi asistió a la Lawrence FamilyDevelopment Charter School donde sedestacó como estudiante recibiendo A ensus notas. Fue por sus notas que ganó unabeca en la prestigiosa escuela depreparatoria Phillips Academy de la cual
se graduó esta primavera.Allí en Phillips, se
convirtió en la estrella y subaile le abrió muchas puertas.Cuando Temi está en elescenario, todos los ojos estánfijos en él. Tal parece quevuela o que se desliza encámara lenta con la destrezade cualquier bailarínprofesional.

Por Dalia Díazellos, Temi tuvo que ayudar en cualquiertipo de trabajo en que la familia sedesenvolvía. Los estudiantes que fueron auna finca tuvieron que hacer esas laborestambién.
El propósito del viaje fue para aprendermás sobre la cultura española y practicar elidioma. Esta experiencia fueextremadamente fructífera para él.
Entonces, para finales del curso esteaño, Temi tuvo la oportunidad de visitarAfrica y bailar en el Festival de Arte enJohannesburg y Cape Town. Por 17 días,los estudiantes de Phillips Academydeleitaron audiencias con la presentaciónteatral de “Things Fall Apart”, una obrasobre el choque cultural que ocurre cuandola civilización occidental se impone ante laAfrica tradicional en la tribu Igbo deNigeria. También fueron a un safari y pudoexperimentar la vida en ese continente.
Devers salió en The Phillipian (elperiódico escolar) varias veces. El 17 demayo del 2005, escribieron: “Temi Devers’05 bailó en un acto que le ganó el corazón
de la audiencia con Vuelve la Salsa. Laquímica incomparable y el increíble talentomaravillaron a la audiencia. Los ágiles piesde Devers parecían retar las leyes degravedad. El programa de danzas de seguroque echará a Devers de menos el próximoaño.”
Estas experiencias lo han preparadopara estar lejos de casa. “Mi primer año enPhillips fue muy difícil al estar tan alejadode mis padres”, dijo Temi.
Devers es ahora un estudiante de laUniversidad de Delaware donde seguiráuna carrera de ingeniería o comercio. Elno está seguro de lo que va a hacer. Unacosa que él sí sabe es que nunca dejará debailar. A él le encantaría tomarlo comoprofesión pro quiere asegurarse que teneruna carrera que lo respalde en el futuro.
Este joven de 18 años de edad sí quesabe lo que quiere y cómo lograrlo. El esel orgullo y felicidad de Temo y Fifi y todosnos regocijamos con su alegría.
“Una cosa sí le puedo asegurar: quenunca dejaré de bailar”, nos dijo confiado.

Temi Devers was destined to be a star.From a very early age, his love for dancinghas defined him and by the time he was sixyears old, Temi was taking dance lessonswith Leonor Sánchez and later with QuityMorgan of the Lawrence Ballet Academy.
At a time when boys in the Spanish-speaking community would not think oftaking dance lessons, Temi was theinspiration and several of them enrolled andmade a name for themselves with their art.
Temi’s parents Temistocles Devers andJosefa “Fifi” García have always caredabout their children’s education making itthe main priority in their home. Temiattended the Lawrence FamilyDevelopment Charter School where heexcelled as an A student. It was his schoolmarks that earned him a full scholarship atthe prestigious prep school PhillipsAcademy having graduated this past spring.
At Phillips he soon became the star ofthe show and his dancing opened manydoors for him. When Temi is on stage, alleyes are on him. He seems to fly or glidein slow motion with the skill of anyaccomplished professional dancer.
During his tenure at Phillips Academy,Temi has had the opportunity to travel. Lastyear, through the Putney Program, a groupthat performs community serviceinternationally, he spent five weeks visiting

Spain, living with local families in large andsmall cities. During his stay, Temi had tohelp in whatever type of work thatparticular family is involved. The studentswho ended up in a farm had to performthose duties, as well.
The purpose of the trip was to learnabout Spanish culture and practice thelanguage. This experience was extremelyrewarding according to him.
Then, at the end of this school year,Temi had the opportunity to visit Africa anddance at the Art Festival in Johannesburgand Cape Town. For 17 days, PhillipsAcademy students delighted audiences withthe theatre presentation of “Things FallApart”, a play focusing on the clash that
occurs when Western civilization intrudesinto the traditional Africa of the NigerianIgbo tribe. They also went on a safari andexperienced life in that continent.
Devers appeared in The Phillipianseveral times. On May 17, 2005 they wrote:“Temi Devers ‘05 danced the act that wonthe audience’s heart with Vuelve la Salsa.Their unmistakable chemistry andincredible talent awed the audience.Devers’ nimble feet seemed to defy the lawsof gravity. The dance program will surelymiss Devers ‘05, next year.”
These experiences have prepared himto be away from home. “My first year atPhillips was very difficult being away frommy parents,” said Temi.
Devers is now a student at theUniversity of Delaware where he will bepursuing either an engineering or businesscareer. He’s not sure right now which wayhe will go. One thing he does know is thathe will never stop dancing. He would loveto be able to take it as a career but wants toplay it safe with a sound career to fall backon.
This 18-year-old surely knows what hewants and knows how to get it. He is thepride and joy of Temo and Fifi and we allrejoice at their happiness.
“One thing is for sure: I’ll never giveup dancing,” he stated self-assured.

Over 30 Merrimack Valley restaurants recently offered a taste of
their cuisine at “Taste of the Merrimack Valley”, at Blaire House,
Tewksbury. 500 people enjoyed the wide variety of food choices,
including, Frank Romano, Blaire House and sponsor of the event;
Barbara Brandt-Saret, Elder Services Community Relations
Manager; and John Felci, Patriot Ambulance. The event raised
$5,000 for Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley Elder Care Fund
that provides emergency assistance and in-home services for
elde4rs when there are no other resources. A check will be
presented at Elder Services Walk/5K Run for Elders on Sunday,
September 18.

The staff of the Merrimack ValleyYMCA’s Day Camp Otter honored the‘camper of the year’ on Friday, August19, at a waterfront ceremony. BethanyBergeron of Methuen, age 13, wasrecognized for exhibiting the YMCA’score values of caring, honesty, respect,and responsibility during the 2005 campseason. According to Camp ProgramDirector Bronwyn Crocker, “Bethanywas full of camp spirit. She was alwayswilling to lend a helping hand and wasunafraid to try new camp activities. Hersmiling face was seen at all times duringthe summer days at Camp Otter.”

The Merrimack Valley YMCA’s DayCamp Otter is located on Captain’s Pondin Salem, New Hampshire. Camp Otteris for boys and girls age 6 to 13. Theprogram runs Monday through Fridayfrom 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Daily activities include: archery,canoeing, kayaking, swimming lessons,free swim, baseball, floor hockey, soccer,arts & crafts, challenge course, softball,basketball, ropes course, nature walks,volleyball, just to name a few. In addition,there are weekly themed activitiesincluding: Family Nights, Movies Underthe Stars, Cookouts, Dances, AnimalShows, Beach Parties, Otter WorldRecords, and much more.

Lawrence Mayor, Michael J. Sullivan,together with Representative WilliamLantigua, Council President PatrickBlanchette and Fire Department Chief,Joseph Marquis announced the acquisitionof new fire apparatus for the fireDepartment.
The acquisition is comprised of 1 PumpTruck, 1 Rescue Truck, one new car for theFire Chief and one for the Deputy Chiefand several hydraulic life saving tools suchas extrication tools and self-containedbreathing apparatus and two ThermalImaging Cameras (TIC). “This is the firstacquisition made by the Fire Departmentusing city money in thirty years. We areinvesting in the people of the city”, saidMayor Sullivan.
According to Fire Chief JosephMarquis, Firehouses have not beenforgotten. Engine 6 will receive a newkitchen, paint and woodwork job.Engine 7 will have a new bathroom, roof,windows, 2 rooms remodeled and a kitchenin the process of been remodeled.Engine 8, a new bathroom is in the worksand new windows in a near future. Engine9 will also have new windows in a nearfuture.
District A Councilor and City CouncilPresident Patrick J. Blanchette made theannouncement of two fire trucks the Cityof Lawrence will donate to the DominicanRepublic in early June. These fire apparatus
are the ones being replaced after servicingthe city for more than 40 years and theirtransfers have been approved by the CityCouncil.
While vacationing in the DominicanRepublic, Council President Blanchettetook time off his vacation to visit twofirehouses outside of Santo Domingo wherehe witnessed first hand the lack of adequateequipment. “I was amaze by the conditionsof the buildings and the equipment”, saidCouncil President Blanchette, and added,“I will be in support of sending every piecewe can to Santo Domingo, where thefirefighters lack everything”.
“As a Dominican, I am thankful for thisdonation to the Dominican Republic”,expressed Representative William Lantiguawho pledged to continue working, alongwith the Lawrence delegation at the statelevel, to bring funds to the city. “Peoplenow are looking from outside trying to getinto Lawrence, not like in the old days,trying to get out, and this is because thegood things this administration is doing”,said Lantigua.
Everybody, including this reporter,raised their hands when RepresentativeLantigua proposed that “a delegationshould be set up to go to the DominicanRepublic and deliver the trucks”.

The US Administration on Aging(AoA) recently awarded a $540,000 threeyear grant to Elder Services of theMerrimack Valley’s Medicare and MedicaidOutreach and Education Program (MORE).The Program’s mission is to reach andeducate limited English-speaking eldersand others underserved and un-servedelders across the state with culturally andlinguistically appropriate, time-sensitivehealth benefits eligibility information.
As Massachusetts’ Senior MedicarePatrol Project, MORE has a dual missionof educating limited English proficientelder populations. How to navigate thecomplexities of the Medicare and Medicaidhealth benefits eligibility network, and howto become better health care consumers.This program is part of a national effort ofcombating health care errors, abuses andeven potential fraud.
Over the last three years, MORE, inpartnership with other community basedorganizations and the MassachusettsSHINE (Serving Health Information Needsof Elders) Program, has successfullybroadened and strengthened the provisionof culturally competent services to LEPpopulations as well as at risk and homelessindividuals and provided one-on-one healthbenefits eligibility counseling.

Tomb’ of Christ – EpitaphioAt the time of the fire, a big loss for the congregation was the Epitaphio. Throughout Greece, Good Friday is
known as the day of mourning. It is the only day of the year that the Divine Liturgy will not be celebrated. During
the Lamentation Service, the priest and choir chant Byzantine hymns around the ‘Epitaphio’ or ‘Tomb of Christ’. This
is used in the Greek Orthodox Churches to symbolize the bier of Christ and is adorned with a multitude of flowers
on this day.
The Epitaphio is taken out of the church and carried by men through the village to the cemetery and back, with
a slow procession of priests and altar boys carrying gold crosses and Icons. The church congregation follows,
holding lit candles symbolizing the mourners. The chants are sad and solemn and the Church bells will ring slow
and rhythmically as they do when signaling a funeral.
After the procession returns to the church, the followers walk past (and under) the Epitaphios, kissing the
image of Christ which is laid upon it.
The Epitaphio was replaced, at the cost of $8,000, thanks to a contribution of an elderly couple, member of the
Assumption of the Virgin Mary congregation.

On April 24, 1999, a fire destroyedthe Assumption of the Virgin Mary GreekOrthodox Church in Lowell. In the midstof sadness, the congregation wasdetermined to rebuild and a site waschosen in Dracut.
Nikita Flaris, President of theChurch’s Board of Directors andChairman of the Merrimack ValleyCouncil of Eastern Orthodox Churcheswas very pleased to give me a tour. Thenew Assumption of the Virgin MaryChurch opened on Palm Sunday 2003.Among the very few items rescued fromthe ashes was a small table that has apreferential spot within the church andthe only icon saved was the ArchangelMichael. Although the inside of the domehas not been decorated and the altar istemporary, their services have attractednew parishioners from all over theMerrimack Valley.
When they first opened up, they had
approximately 50 member families.Today, in just two years, the number hasincreased to over 200. During theweekend of August 19-21, they held afood festival to raise the necessary fundsto complete the church hall in thebasement. Olympia Restaurant in Lowellprovided all the food for the 3-dayfestival and volunteers pitched in to makeit the success it was.
Luis Alberto Betances, a Dominicanwho works for Primo’s Pizza for the past6 years comes to help out. “I becameinvolved with this church through myboss, the restaurant’s owner.”
When finished, it will provide a greatservice to the church and all of itsmembers. “It’s all in the unity. Therewas total cooperation from all themembers to get this accomplished,” saidMr. Flaris. “We welcome not just Greeks,but anyone who practices the GreekOrthodox religion,” concluded.

Today’s triptakes us to theWater St. area ofthe past. SealtestIce Cream was onBay State Road formany years andwas a big seller inthe valley area.Just up the street
was the roller skating rink. It was run bythe Legendre Family and many of uslearned how to waltz, jitterbug, and tangoon skates. While many of us could performthese dances on skates we couldn’t controlour dance steps in a dance hall.
A lot of dates were made at this placethat was nicknamed “the bucket of blood.”The real name was the Riverside Garden.This building was at the end of CaulkensCourt and at the edge of the river. Whenthe “ladies only” skate was called all the socalled “cool cats” could be seen at the railsplanning who we could use a line on.
Remember the Hosty girls? Maureenand Marge, nicknamed “Mugs.” She hadflaming red hair. Both were great skaters.The Noel sisters, Marlene & Marion, AggieGauthier, Gerri St. Hilaire and ThelmaCasey a bevy of beauties were just a few ofmany who kept us young boys mesmerized.Boy did we think we were hot with our armsrolled up in our t-shirts and most with ducktail haircuts.
I don’t remember a “boy’s only” setthough. The floor manager was a large(heavy) guy named Paul and we called himBig Paulie and he was a smooth skater. Onoccasion, he would waltz or jitterbug witha lady who would be in heaven to be hischoice.
Big Paulie would come to work on thegood weather nights on the sharpest Harleyor Indian motorcycle us young guys everlaid eyes on. It was loaded with chrome,lights and gorgeous saddlebags. Manynights the cop on duty was Charlie Keenanand he was the keeper of the peace. Onsome nights he would hold us guys amazedwith his stories of his job as a policeman.His sons are big in real estate in theSalisbury and Hampton Beach area. Nowand then, Sergeant Carl Schiavone, nowretired, would appear as a sub for Keenan,he was a former athlete at Lawrence Highand to this day he’s stillsharp as can be.
His grandchildrenare many and includeTommy Schiavone nowof the mayor’s staff,Bobby and PeterLefebvre both exLawrence High 3-sporters. Peter is a teachertoday and Bobby is aLawrence PoliceDetective. KaiSchiavone, his daughterwas the cheerleadercoach and a popularteacher at L.H.S. In thewinter pro wrestling tookover on Monday nights.
A Water Streetresident became a greatfavorite and was just oneof a very athletic family.Les Ruffen wrestled thebest around and we wereall awe struck. Of course,

we didn’t know or maybe didn’t care thatthis was the early part of what wouldbecome the WWF. Names like theVillainous Wild Bull Curry fromConnecticut, Tiger Tasker, and womenwrestlers like Slave Girl Moolah werecrowd pleasers.
Tuffy Truesdale wrestled an alligatorand had us running to the exits when itlooked like the animal was escaping thering. We didn’t know it was part of theshow. The black panther would become avillain as he tried to gouge out Ruffen’s eyeswith a piece of something as the refereelooked away.
World’s Heavyweight Champ FrankSexton was sure to play to a sellout crowd.We must remember the midget wrestlersboth men and women and one name Iremember was Sky Lo Lee. Tommy Ruffenwas a 3-sporter at LHS and a hall-of-famerthere and now a resident of Salem, NH. Anda retiree from First National stores can befound at all high school hoop games withex great athletes Joe Lee and Pete Roy.George Ruffen was a fine baseball andsoftball player. Billy Ruffen, after manyyears of coaching the Hadley whiz kids infast pitch softball and running the SouthLawrence West Little League, became apromoter and brought the king and his court- a four man softball team - to the city for afew years. Bill would choose a local all-star team to play against this storybookteam. Each game was a sellout.
Further up Water St. was O’Sullivan’sPark, the Boys Club occupies this site today.Lawrence High and Central Catholic playedtheir home games there. In those days therewas a clubhouse there and next store to thatclubhouse was Hyder’s Market. That storeis still there under the name of Jonny’sMarket.
In those days, high school games werebig crowd events and Lawrence Highwould sell an elongated ticket with eightperforations that the ticket taker would tearone off at each game.
Central played in the Catholic Leaguein those days Dick Moynihan a fabled coachand also the school’s football coach.
Charlie Florino goes on to become a twosport captain at BU. After a stellar careerat Central, George McCafferty who recentlypassed away was a 3-sporter, BobbyRosmarino a hall of fame football coachnow retired was a catcher in baseball whennot playing hoop or football, Freddie Naderwas another 3-sporter who played atO’Sully’s so did Bucky Poole, Al Peterson,Bobby Murdoch, the late Archie McCarthy,former plumbers union now of No.Andover, Skeets Scanlon along with RedTiner were part of Central’s baseball history

Lawrence was part of the now defunctEssex County League. Names like WalterColson, Wally Gartside, Ray Palmegianonickname “Punchy” all 3-sporters alongwith the fabled Callagy brothers wore thebaseball uniforms of LHS at the Water St.Park. Eddie Samra, Eddie Pecorella, MauryLeonardi, Pete and Aimie Reming followedtheir father Ed and uncle Leo Reming whoperformed for blue and white. Joe Cockroftwho once lived on Water St. and now ofHampstead, NH played at O’Sully’s on hisway to the Minor League team for theChicago White Sox. He and teammates theRemings starred on their way to the highschool hall of fame.
Bobby Lefebre and brother Larryplayed at the park, both 3-sporters becamehall-of-famers. Bob retired from teachingat his alma mater and Larry after serving asthe mayor of the city and later a retiree fromthe personnel department of the city. BobSinabaldi and cousin Paul Autiello, EddieCouro, Dapper Donovan now retired fromthe telephone company is still sporting hisred hair and wife Ann, a retired city nurse,is spoiling their grandchildren. Theirdaughter is the St. Mary’s hoop coach thesedays.

President of the United States. He has beenhunkered down in Crawford, Texas for awhile riding his bike and avoiding a rerunof his previous falls. Not in the polls, whichare going down fast, what I mean is falls tothe ground. If it wasn’t for Mrs. CindySheehan, the mother of an American soldierkilled in the Iraq war who wants to chatwith him and ask tough questions about theloss of her son and almost two thousandothers and the fifteen thousand woundedAmericans nobody seems to want to askquestions about, you would not even thinkthat we have a working President. Maybewe have a part-time President.
But not too fast; hold your Democratichorses and hopes. That is not the onlyslowdown this summer. You don’t hear theDemocrats talking seriously about solutionsto those issues either; they are trying tofigure out what is going on. Oh, like youand me, they know we have a long list ofproblems, but still cannot figure out howto solve them. We are between the time-honored “rock and a hard place.” I wasgoing to say “I-raq and a hard place” butdesisted. So, lacking any big decisionscoming from Crawford or the White Housepretty soon, I must write about other things.Read on…
I Remember Doña Maria...In the summer of 1950 something, I
am not sure what the something wasanymore- I am getting old you know-myfamily used to spend summers in a Havana,Cuba, beach resort called Baracoa. It wasnot a place for the well to do by any means,sort of middle class. The population wasmade of us vacationers and the locals, andwe used to get along very well, thanks. Thatwas before the proletariat became a forcein Cuba and ruined things for all of us,including them.
I remember Doña María. She was a
local grandmother in her eighties; and wasa fixture of the town for what to my youngmind looked to be forever. Friendly, astraight shooter, loved chewing tobacco;she was mother, grandmother and great-grandmother not only to her own family offishermen but to all of us kids. One day shefell ill; gravely ill. The word spread out fast;we all knew she was going to die soon.
The two-way street of the only trafficroad on the beach that followed the oceanshore and passed in front of her humblehouse was marked by two hastily placedtraffic signs: “Please, keep quiet. There isa sick person here.” Cars and our bikeswould slow down in front of her home outof respect and we kids had a sense that webetter keep our mouths shut; our yellingsubdued to a murmur. Ever since that timeI got this funny feeling that you have toremain silent when death is around us, andI still don’t know why. Of course,eventually Doña María died.

No HMOs, no television crewshanging around, no prime time interviews,no houses of congress or senatesgrandstanding about how you should liveor die. No President would wake up in themiddle of the night to fly an airplane to keepDoña María alive. Technology had no partin our lives. We just lived or died...
Computer WormsThat was another word we never heard
much about in those hot summer dayseither. Worms were those unfortunate slimycreatures we kids hung from the end of ourfishing rods to catch “mojarras.” (Sorry notranslation available.) It was a ratherinteresting irony: the worms had to die sothe fish could be caught; and die as well,so we could live. There must be somethingphilosophically profound in that statement,although I am not sure what it is.
It seems that a late twentieth centuryinvention, now a new computer “worm,”has tried to attack most Windows 2000computer Operating Systems this pastweek. We did not even know that there wasanyone using that Operating Systemprogram anymore; now we know. Do you
mean to tell us that there are some computerusers who have not upgraded to WindowsXP yet? Nincompoops! The good news isthat hackers are becoming obsolete in theirtechnology. The media is aghast. Everyearly evening news anchor was alarmed andcurious about what this computer wormmeant for your life and mine. Slowsummers have no end.
We stopped our conversations abouthunger, the dying in the war, thedeclarations of emergency by two WesternStates that can no longer control theirborders. Our hard disks became moreimportant because we are familiar with lifewith them on a daily basis. We can hear itswhirling noise when it does its thing. Theborders are too far removed from us.
The computer worm has no effect onthe Iraq war, the dead or the wounded; ithas no consequence on the ever rising oiland gas prices; it has no impact on the waron drugs; and please, forget about the manymillions dying of hunger or AIDS just inthe time it took you to read this phrase.Those are affected by a different type ofworm, but who cares, right? The computerworm just spreads around and takes overhard disk drives making useless floppies outof them and shutting off our computers asthough trying to tell us something in amessage we should decipher. Who knows?It may even force some folks out of thecomputer rooms and into their bedrooms.Some spouses will be delighted. Hi honey,you got mail! It seems that the unrealdangers we don’t understand or are afraidof are more real than the ones we arefamiliar with…
Well, summer is finally crawlingslowly to a halt. And this is my point ofview today.

The 17th Annual Chief Red BlanketPow-Wow and Native American CraftsFestival will be held Saturday andSunday, September 10-11, 2005 at PlugPond, Mill St, Haverhill, MA. GatesOpen from 11AM to 6PM daily.
The pow-wow will feature theTlacopan Aztec Indian Dancers ofMexico. They are all traditional AztecIndians and share their ancient and ritualdances throughout the Country. Thegroup, formed over thirty years ago, willperform dances dating back to the pre-Spanish conquest. They will be adornedin their gorgeous, handmade, beadedcostumes and colorful headdresses withrare pheasant and macaw feathers. Thedancers accompany themselves with age-old percussion instruments. They markthe rhythm of their dances withchachayote seeds, worn on their ankles.The performance of the Aztec Indians isvery exotic in nature and enables thespectators to step back in time andenvision the beauty and cultural richnessof the ancient Aztec Indians. Tomas, thelead dancer, is one of the last Aztec’s aliveto perform the snake and fire dance. Ashe performs this breath-taking dance, youcan feel the years of dedication andabsolute concentration that is needed.They will perform both days at the pow-wow. A highlight of this years’ pow-wowwill be Iroquois Songs and Dances byDave Little Tree and wife Jenny. I decided to enter the District F CityCouncil race to give the voters of SouthLawrence a clear choice— A choice ofgoing back to the old way of doing thingsat city hall, a choice of staying with thestatus quo or a choice of moving forwardwith a new vision, a new way of doingthings and a new candidate with a proventrack record in finance, organization andteamwork.
I feel, as I am sure many of you do,that the last two years are two years thatwe would like to put behind us. Ourresidents deserve a Councilor who willwork for them continuously, a Councilorwho will seek out assets that can be utilizedto prevent the pressure to raise taxes, aCouncilor with the financial experience tolook at things from a financial point of viewaimed at saving money and working smarterfor the taxpayers of this city. The old wayof doing things in City Hall needs to befixed.
The voters in this election have theopportunity to change the face of the CityCouncil by electing new faces with newvisions. We need fresh ideas and new waysof looking at things. We need councilorswho will put forth new ideas and differentways to get things done. We need to stepoutside the box and streamline the workbeing done within the council and withinthe administration. We need to ask whyissues bogging down the council could notbe transferred to the administration forprompt action that would benefit all citizensof Lawrence.
I bring to the table over 30 years ofexperience in accounting, budgeting andfinancial management. These are tools thatI believe are desperately needed on the
council now if we are to move forward. Toomany times in the past, our council has justapproved budgets with very little beingdone to really dig into the basics of thenumbers to find out why we are spendingtaxpayers’ funds. Items like providing a carto the data processing director. I don’t knowof anyone in this type of position in privateindustry who receives this kind of perk.These are the types of items that the councilshould be addressing to provide maximumvalue with your tax dollars.
My method of getting thingsaccomplished is by developingrelationships, creating alliances andbuilding teams that work together toaccomplish common goals. My opponentseach have their own styles. I prefer to use amore cooperative, team building approachto accomplishment. I believe that my teamapproach works best in the long run. I hopethe following pages will help you get toknow who Jim Hoole is, and how he canserve you as your next city councilor fromDistrict F. We need more for our residents.You deserve a return of your tax dollarswith quality of life issues and a progressiveforward moving district. Please let me helpachieve these goals for the good of ourDistrict and the City of Lawrence.

Memorial Guard and Mayor Michael Sullivan will be hosting the 3rd Annual
Civil War Weekend.
This year’s event theme is around Lawrence’s Historic City Hall. The
main floor will be transformed into a mini museum, with displays traveling
up from Baltimore, MD. This year’s event begins each morning with a
pancake breakfast at the Senior Center and ends Saturday with the Gala
Ball, and closes out on Sunday with the rededication of City Hall.

The Music Clubhouse is an excitingand creative space within the LawrenceYMCA where youth ages 10 through 18 canexplore musical instruments, participate ininnovative workshops and make newfriends. Established in February, this newmusic program is offered at no charge tostudents, and is structured such that theycan visit as much or a little as their schedulepermits.
The Clubhouse offers musicinstruction as well as drop in times duringthose hours to use our instrument collectionincluding electric and acoustic guitars,electric bass guitar, drum set, hand drumssuch as congas and djembes, electrickeyboards and much more. Youth canexplore the Clubhouse and all instrumentsfor free.
In addition workshops offered this fallwill include: youth voice; teen voice; basicelectric guitar; youth drum circles; teendrum circles; rock, rhythm and blues; andwriting lyrics for music. The Lawrence Music Clubhouse seeks a guitar teacher to create an exciting
and positive learning environment for beginner guitarists between age 12 and
18. The instructor would be responsible for teaching small group workshops that
give kids basic skills in the guitar and that inspire them to continue learning. The
Electric Guitar instructor would teach four 8-week sessions throughout the school
year, working an average of 3-4 hours per week at the Music Clubhouse. Electric
Guitars provided by Clubhouse. Instructors earn $20 to $30 hourly.
Qualifications: Candidates must be passionate about youth and the process
of empowering them through exposure to music and musicians. This is a basic
electric guitar workshop for new and beginning players; prior teaching experience
is helpful. Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidate must
be able to create fun and inspiring environment!

Haverhill resident seniors are also encouraged to participate to learn
about activities and become involved with the COA.
A monthly coffee hour and orientation will be held on the first
Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at the Citizen Center in Room 22.
In the event that the first Monday is a holiday, the coffee hour will
be held on the second Monday. Currently active COA participants as
well as Activities Coordinators will be present to make all newcomers
feel welcome and provide information. Refreshments will be served.

Este no fue un mixer ordinario, donde los miembros yamigos se reúnen a charlar e intercambiar tarjetas denegocios. Este mixer les dio a todos la oportunidad derecorrer las nuevas facilidades del Noble Family AnimalCare and Adoption Center, localizadas en la Nevins Farm,en el 400 de la Broadway, en Methuen.

No animal lover could resist coming to the mixer heldTuesday, August 23, 2005, by the Merrimack ValleyChamber of Commerce at the MSPCA, sponsored byJohnson Veterinary Hospital, located at 160 Winthrop Ave,South Lawrence.This was not an ordinary mixer. MVCC members andfriends usually chat and exchange business cards. Thismixer gave everybody not only that, but the opportunityto tour the new Noble Family Animal Care and AdoptionCenter located at Nevins Farm, at 400 Bradway, inMethuen.During the tour, MVCC members were able to visit withcats, a lot of them, dogs, rabbits, you named. It is like beingin a huge pet shop with volunteers at hand to help withevery question you might have.To adopt a pet from the MSPCA, you could check the PetsLooking for Adoption list published in Rumbo every 1st
