From Pastor Ralph’s Desk: Examining the Authority of Jesus
Matthew 28: 16-20
Intro: This past Sunday, Chris Carter brought us a won-
derful message on the great commission. Since he and
Stephanie arte missionaries, he was able to incorporate
their actual experience into the message which help to
bring it alive. He really focused upon the 18th verse which
deals with the Authority of Jesus. As a matter of fact, the
real subject of the great commission is not so much the
command given but rather the one giving the command.
For when you understand that the one giving the command
has been given all authority then you understand that the
command must be heeded and as well that the command
can be accomplished. We really fail to understand how
much authority Christ has and what that implies to us as
believers. So, I decided to lead us into an examination of
the authority of Jesus as found in the great commission.
I. First, let us examine the declaration of His authority,
vs 18. There are several things that we will notice as we
examine the declaration of His authority.
A. First, notice the speaker sharing His declara-
tion. Of course, what I am referring to is who is making
the declaration of His authority and the answer He Him-
self is declaring His authority. “Then Jesus came to them
and said, All authority in heaven and on earth have been given
to me.” Now what is important about this is that Jesus is the
only one who could rightly declare His authority because all
along He has been demonstrating His authority from the mira-
cles He performed and the teachings He has proclaimed. How-
ever, it would have been early to rule out His authority in spite
of the fact that He did all His miracles because He was cruci-
fied and died. Well, Praise God He had one more miracle up
His sleeve so to speak, and it was the greatest one of all. It was
the miracle of His own resurrection. This miracle left no doubt
to who He was, the glorious Son of God. It was this miracle
that gave Him the right to declare that He had been given to
Him.
Now it is important to remember that we can’t declare
that Jesus was just a good man or just a good example. For if
He was not who He claimed to be, the Son of God who has all
authority, then He is not a good example nor a good man. For
He would be a liar and deceiver. However, Praise God that
His miracles, His teachings and His resurrection boldly de-
clared that He is Who He claims to be and that indeed all au-
thority had been given to Him.
B. Second, notice the setting of His declaration, vs 16.
In other words, where did Jesus declare His authority? Verse
16 gives us this answer. He told His disciple to meet Him on a
certain mountain. Now, I believe that Jesus purposely chose a
mountain because of what a mountain represents. They have
always been a symbol of majesty, power and authority. For
when you approach one you have to look up to see the top and
from the top you can look down and see the world below you
that looks to small.
It was on a mountain top on another occasion and pos-
sible the same mountain that Jesus revealed to three of His dis-
ciples that He was clearly more than just a man. We call it the
Mount of Transfiguration. For on that mountain top the Bible
reveals that the Divinity of Jesus which had been clothed over
by human flesh was on this occasion allowed to shine through
His flesh so that Jesus shined brighter than the sun. So, Jesus
used a mountain to declare His authority so it could also re-
mind them of the Mount of Transfiguration where His glory and
authority shined through.
order to bring about our full salvation.
C. Third, notice the scope of His declaration, vs 18.
In other words, just how much authority is found in that lit-
tle three letter word “all”. He was not given a portion, or a
good bit, or half, or most. No, thank God He was given all
authority because He had fully accomplished all that the Fa-
ther asked Him to do in
rder to bring about our full salvation.
Therefore, we must move forward in bold service for
Jesus because with all authority He commands us and with
all authority He controls us and with all authority He com-
forts us. Oh, bless His name that He has all authority.
D. Fourth, and finally notice the spheres of His dec-
laration, vs 18. In other words, where does His authority
function? When Jesus incarnated Himself into this world, He
took upon human flesh and it was during this time that He
limited His authority to the sphere of His earthly ministry.
However, once He arose, He arose in His glorified body. He
no longer was limited to His earthly ministry. His authority
now extended to heaven and earth. There is no place ever
again that His authority will ever be limited and there is no
place where we can go that we will be outside of His author-
ity. Not even Satan can prevent us from carrying out God’s
will in this world because even in His realm, the authority of
Jesus reigns supreme.
Conclusion: Never, ever think God’s great commission to
make disciples of all nations is either unimportant or undo-
able because all authority declared by Jesus, Himself in
heaven and on earth has been given to Him. Now let us go
under His leadership and make disciples.
Jesus Love You,
Ralph Lee, Jr.
