From Pastor Ralph’s Desk: Paul’s Picture of Timothy
Intro: Paul loved the young man, Timothy. He loved him so much
that he wrote him two letters to help guide him alone in his ministry.
Both of these letters wound up in our New Testament. On this past
Mother’s Day, there couldn’t be a more appropriate person to dis-
cuss than the young man Timothy. When one looks at the picture the
Paul presents of Timothy, they will readily recognize the important
role that mothers can play in their children’s lives. So let us examine
Paul’s picture of Timothy.
I. First, I want to point out that Paul’s picture of Timothy was
one of high commendation. Phil. 2:19-24; 2 Tim. 1:3-4. Of course,
we realize that the word commendation refers to praise in someone’s
life. Paul has shown in these verses that he has high praise of the
work that Timothy has for Christ. In these verses he says that Timo-
thy has proved himself to him. Now this is really an amazing com-
mendation because it comes from the Apostle Paul who probably did
more for the cause of Christ than anyone else ever has. Paul also
said that he practically didn’t have anyone else he could trust other
than Timothy. We need to ask ourselves, would Paul have the same
kind of high commendation for us because we proved ourselves to
him?
II. Second, I want to point out that Paul’s picture of Timothy
was one of a true conversion, Acts 16:1-5. It is in these verses that
Paul is introduced to young Timothy. Timothy is presented to Paul
as a believer and dedicated follower of Jesus Christ. However, Paul
says basically then let us see if your conversion is real. Let us see if
you are willing to truly make your conversion a clear public profes-
sion by launching out with Paul on his mission journey. Well, timo-
thy proved beyond any doubt to Paul that his conversion was not just
in name only but was rather genuine. Now the question is would
Paul be able to say that our conversion was demonstrated to be
genuine because we publically ventured out to spread the good
news of Jesus to a lost and dying world? A true conversion is got
to come out.
III. Third, I want to point out that Paul’s picture of Timothy
was one of a specific calling, I Tim. 1:18; 9:14; 2 Tim. 1:6. In
these different set of verses, Paul points out that Timothy at some
point in time in his life, he had an ordination service in which a
group of Christian leaders recognized the specific calling that
God had for his life. It is clearly obvious that Timothy surren-
dered to that specific calling and launched out to fulfill that call-
ing in the strength of the Lord. The question I have here is, would
Paul be able to say of us that we’ve come to understand God’s
calling on our lives and that we are seeking to fulfill that calling?
IV. Fourth, I want to point out that Paul’s picture of Timothy
was one that involved an enormous challenge, I. & II Timothy. Both of Paul’s letters reveal the enormous challenge that Timothy
had to face. The greatest was that it seems to be that there were so
many false teachers and teachings going around which he had to
confront in order to keep the Christians from falling for these
false teachings. Paul indicates that young Timothy unashamedly
preached the truth of God’s Word and nothing but God’s Word.
The question I ask us is, are we too watching our for false teach-
ings and are we preaching, teaching, and sharing only the truth of
God’s Holy Word?
Conclusion: Finally, I want to point out that Paul’s picture of
Timothy was one complete confidence. Now, the question is where
did his confidence in Timothy come from? Well, of course, first of
all it comes from the Lord. However, another place from which he
has complete confidence in Timothy comes from Timothy’s up-
bringing. In II Tim. 1:3-5 and 3:14-16, Paul points out that Timo-
thy’s mother and grandmother, both where a great reason for his
sincere faith.
Well the question is what did his mother, Eunice and
grandmother, Lois do that enhanced his faith to be sincere? Well
the answer given in the second reference, is that from his infancy,
he had been given the Word of God. Paul wasn’t there in Timo-
thy’s infancy, but his grandmother and mother were and they are
the ones that gave him the precious Word of God. It is for this rea-
son, Paul has so much confidence in young Timothy.

mothers and grandmothers you can help create complete confidence
in your children for the cause of Christ by giving them God’s Word
from their infancy. So, let me ask you mothers and grandmothers,
are you giving out the Word of God to your children? I am so glad
my grandmothers and mom did. It has helped make me who I am for
Christ.

Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thess. 5:17-18. This main work for every Christian is given as prayer. The work of our lives is praying. Pray-ing is THE work. What is your primary calling? Which comes first, your praying or your service (work)? E.L. Ambrose
