IFC and Panhellenic Updates
There are some exciting things going on in the greek community IFC got off to a great start this 2009-10 academic year. We
began the new academic year with Greek Week, which was
a huge success and gave the college community the chance
to see what Greek life is about. Also, the fraternities are all
getting involved with the local community through the
Salem Ambassadors program. Each fraternity is assisting the
Salem Ambassadors with weekly clean-ups on Sundays to
help keep our community clean as well as building strong
relationships with the permanent residents of Salem who
live near off-campus student houses. Also, Tyler's Trek is
coming up soon and we hope this event brings the commu-
nity and the college together again this year to raise money
for Autism Research and Awareness. We hope to see as
many people as possible participate in this event.
The new executive positions in IFC have also been filled,
and we believe that each position has been filled by a strong
and capable man. IFC has set goals this year with the help of
the new Executive Team, one of which is to raise our
academics to the high standards we have maintained in
previous years. During Spring IFC Rush, all four fraternities
offered bids to several new Associate Members. We hope
that our new Associate Members will help us reach our new
leadership, service, scholarship and social goals.
With the help of Dr. Chisom and Dean Hines, IFC has set up
various educational programs to help train and develop the
future Greek leaders of Roanoke College. We are very proud
of these initiatives and encourage everyone, not just current
Greek affiliates, to attend these events.
Everyone at IFC and the Greek Community would like to
thank all of those who have helped us this academic year
and we hope to see everyone at upcoming events.

IFC Public Relations
Panhellenic Council has worked very hard this semester to
start off on a good note. During the New Greek Leaders Re-
treat in January, the women of Panhel and members of each of
our chapters did a goal setting exercise. The goals of Panhel
for 2010 are four-fold, with Scholarship, Friendship/Social,
Service, and Leadership goals to work towards. One of our
large goals for this semester is to raise each chapter’s GPA
above the all-sorority average from the Fall semester. In addi-
tion, Panhel plans to host a large, campus-wide event for
Greek and non-Greek students. Building relationships across
campus is of utmost importance to the Sorority Community.
One very exciting announcement from Panhellenic is that we
are co-sponsoring “The Dorm Room Diet’s” Daphne Oz on
March 18th in the Ballroom with Community Council, the Of-
fice of Community Relations, and other organizations. Daphne
Oz is the daughter of Oprah’s health guru, Dr. Oz. Panhellenic
is hosting a reception for Greek women following her presen-
tation to meet Daphne and enjoy some healthy snacks. Please
attend this exciting presentation!
Finally, formal recruitment finished in January, with 56 amaz-
ing women accepting bids from our chapters. Each chapter did
an amazing job with recruitment and made their national or-
ganizations proud. The next recruitment events will take place
the week of April 12, with informal recruitment functions tak-
ing place in each of the four chapters. All unaffiliated women
are invited to attend. Times and days will be announced closer
to the date.

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Focuses on Philan-
thropy
I speak for all the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha’s Phi
Chapter when I say we are all having a lot of fun and working hard to make 2010 another great year. We just picked up a formal pledge class of fifteen young men who show promise of adding an interesting new dynamic to our brotherhood. We are focusing a lot
on community service; recently, we saved the Roa-noke Rescue Mission a lot of time and money by pre-paring their new clinic to be dedicated. This year we have changed our Philanthropy from St. Francis of
Assisi to the local Ronald McDonald House which pro-vides many good opportunities to provide service to the greater Roanoke community. Closer to home, we
are very proud to have two of our brothers, Connor Denis and Tyler Booth, named as Delta Gamma’s An-
chor Man and Chi Omega’s Wise Guy. We plan on con-
tinuing our focus on the sororities’ philanthropy weeks coming up this semester so we can send our
seniors off on a strong note.

Kappa Alpha Order Looks Forward to Helping the Community and
Celebrating During Alumni Weekend
Over the past few months, Kappa Alpha Order has been busy
working with Salem Ambassadors cleaning the neighborhoods
surrounding the Roanoke College campus. In addition to helping the Salem
Ambassadors, twice last semester we cleaned the local highway that our
alumni adopted for us many years ago.
Along with helping the community, we participate in Tyler’s Trek, which is a
walk to help raise money for the Blue Ridge Autistic Research
Center.
We had our Southern Affair week last semester which got the
sororities on campus involved to help raise money for MDA.
Along with helping raise money for charities, Roanoke College will have
their Alumni Weekend in which many alumni will come back to spend the
day with us. In the morning we will start off with our third annual seafood
broil. While everyone is cooking and enjoying the food we will have a band
playing outside to get everyone to be able to relax and have a good time.

What’s Up at Sigma Chi:
So far this has been a busy semester for Sigma Chi. Our newly elected positions have just taken office, transitioning from last year’s successful group of leaders. The new executive positions look to be just as promising as years
prior. Bids Day was a success as we picked up thirteen new members, all of whom we know to be well rounded men and students. Relay for Life is soon approaching and we look to continue our success in this event by raising the most amount
of money of any organization on campus two years in a row. We stress that everyone make a donation, no matter what size, because all of us know someone who has been touched by this illness. Another of Sigma Chi’s goals is to increase our frater-
nity grade point average. We would like to bring it back up to what it has been in previous years. We also look to continue our success in intramural sports, and wish success to our brothers who play a varsity sport for Roanoke.
Students, faculty, staff, and community members gather for the kick-off
of Tyler’s Trek last year.
What’s Going On in the
Sororities??
Phi Mu goes above and beyond Phi Mu, Gamma Eta, has a lot of exciting activities and events planned for
this semester. In February we hold our annual Mr. Leg’s Week. During this
week, all four fraternities compete in a lip sync and pageant. All proceeds
go to our philanthropy, the Children’s Miracle Network, with the majority of
proceeds being donated to benefit Carillon Children’s Hospital in Roanoke.
To further our contribution to CMN, Phi Mu will be hosting a golf tourna-
ment on March 27th at the Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem.
Outside of our philanthropy, we have been keeping busy by getting involved
in things like Salem Ambassadors and intramural basketball. In April, we
will be out on the back quad representing Phi Mu in
Relay for Life. We are all very excited to support Erin Lipscomb, Relay for
Life Chairman and fellow sister who is in charge of Relay for Life this year.
On March 14, 2010 Gamma Eta will be celebrating our 55th Anniversary
here at Roanoke College! We will be hosting a brunch for all Gamma Eta
alumni in the ballroom.
*If anyone is interested in participating in the Golf Tournament, please con-
tact Sarah Ringo at [email protected] or Charlotte Fraser at
Hoo, Hoo, Hoo are We? Chi Omega has had a great start to the spring semester of 2010. Our most exciting announcement would be our new addi-tion of thirteen classy beautiful women! These women will be a great addition to our sisterhood and we are so excited to have them. Upon arriving back on campus, we were pleased to find out that our work hard-play hard attitude had paid off when we received news of obtaining the highest G.P.A of all sororities. We are encouraging our sisters to work even harder this semester to continue our academic excellence as a sisterhood. On a similar note, we would like to congratulate two of our seniors, Stepha-nie Rigos and Jennifer Treadway, on receiving the honor of being invited to join Phi Beta Kappa. Two other sisters, Megan Semmelman and Lauren Boblett, have been accepted into Al-pha Kappa Delta, the sociology honors society. Our community service chair, Hattie Figgers, is currently col-lecting cases of bottled water to send to Haiti. If anyone has any interest in helping out with this project, we would appreci-ate it. We recently announced our new Wise Guy, Tyler Booth and the formal pledge class’ Chi Guy, Albert Smith. Congratulations to both of you! We congratulate all of the other fraternities and sororities and their newest pledge classes and wish everyone a great semes-ter. We have certainly gotten off to an exciting and rewarding start and hope this continues throughout the semester.
In”sight” Into Delta Gamma
The sisters of Delta Gamma are very excited for all the upcoming events planned for this spring. The women of DG have been very active at Summerville nursing home in Salem, Virginia. With the success of the past Fall Ball dances at the nursing home, the sisters decided to host a Spring Fling dance in which the residents of Summerville will be invited to dance and feast with the girls of DG. Along with the dances held at the nurs-ing home, the sisters also attend Bingo Night where they visit and play bingo with the residents. For Valentine’s Day the women of DG crafted cards to send to the nursing home to spread the joy of the holiday. The philanthropy of Delta Gamma is Service for Sight. The sisters do different tasks to help those with impaired vision. This spring DGs are making touch books for the students at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. The touch books were decorated with materials that would help the students recognize the animals in the pictures by touching them. They used materials such as cotton balls on the lambs, balloons on the dolphins, and feathers on the ducks. Two sisters of Delta Gamma, Virginia Moore and Madison Elliot, took the initiative to get involved in campus life by starting Red Watch Band. Red Watch Band is a program that raises awareness about the toxic effects of alcohol. The program involves a training session where students will learn how to recognize alcohol emer-gencies and how to respond effectively. Virginia and Madison, with the help of their sisters, are working with President Maxey in trying to jump-start this program on campus very soon. Along with having a diverse sisterhood with athletes, various majors, and campus leaders, many sisters of Delta Gamma have taken the opportunity to study abroad with the school. Last se-mester Bonnie O’Neil studied in Australia while Amber Antiuk traveled to France. Amber’s studies in France are continuing this semester along with Mary Dare Thorton, who is also in France, while Alison Krupnik expands her education to New Zealand. The sisters of Delta Gamma would like to express our excitement about the success of recruitment this spring. We are so proud of our new members! Their enthusiasm and dedication brings ex-hilaration into our sisterhood.
Razzle Dazzle Dalpha, We’re Alpha Sigma Alpha!
Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded in 1901 by
five women of Longwood University, Virginia Boyd
Noell, Juliette Hundley Gilliam, Calva Watson Woot-ton, Louise Cox Carper, and Mary Williamson
Hundley. In their charter, they stated, “The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among its members, and in every way to create pure and ele-
vating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mould such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world.”
Since 1901, Alpha Sigma Alpha has grown and developed as a sorority. Presently, Alpha Sigma Al-
pha supports two philanthropies, the Special Olym-
pics (1976) and the S. June Smith Center (1976). The aim of the sorority has stayed much the same. On the
homepage of our national website, it states that, “Alpha Sigma Alpha is a women's organization that exists to promote high ideals and standards for its
members throughout their lives. We strive to develop women of poise and purpose and assist our members in fostering lifetime friendships.”
Alpha Sigma Alpha’s open motto is “Aspire, Seek, Attain.” In addition, Alpha Sigma Alpha em-ploys four insignia, the crown, the palm tree, the star,
and the phoenix. The latter two are displayed on Al-pha Sigma Alpha’s crest. Alpha Sigma Alpha also has
two jewels, the ruby and the pearl, which give us our primary colors, crimson and pearl white. At National Convention in 2008, Alpha Sigma Alpha voted Dot,
the Ladybug as our official mascot. This past year, Alpha Sigma Alpha celebrated
its anniversary of eight wonderful years on Roanoke
College’s campus. Theta Beta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded on February 16th, 2002.
Members of Theta Beta are involved in many aspects
of RC life, including Residence Life, the Honors Pro-gram, RC athletics, choir, LSM, and many more. Our
goal is to continue to be involved on campus, as well as arrange activities with other Greek and non-Greek organizations.
Theta Beta also employs our own motto: Indi-vidually unique, Together complete! We are all dif-ferent, but when push comes to shove, we can always
count on our sisters.
Alpha Sigma Alpha supports the Special Olympics
and the S. June Smith Center as its two national phi-lanthropies. As a sisterhood we feel very strongly about helping out our philanthropies. The Special
Olympics has activities in the Roanoke areas. We are going to participate in a bowling tournament for
the Special Olympics on March 13th. We would love to invite any other sororities or fraternities on cam-pus that would be interested in participating. I’m
sure they would love the extra help, and it would be a lot of fun! Our philanthropy week is tentatively the week of March 15th. We will be raising money
for the S. June Smith Center and the Special Olym-pics. We will also be doing a school supplies fund-raiser for the S. June Smith Center by asking for do-
nations at the lip sync. The S. June Smith Center is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; it is a center de-
voted to educating developmentally challenged children. Supporting our philanthropies is an im-portant part of Alpha Sigma Alpha. The two phi-
lanthropies we support help children all over the world overcome adversity. We feel that this is a great cause and encourage others to participate in
fundraisers and events with Alpha Sigma Alpha to create strong bonds between Greek organizations
and help out two organizations in need.

Chapter Happenings: Pi Kappa Phi- Xi
Pi Kappa Phi is currently busy preparing for our upcoming Aloha Week, (formerly War of the Roses) taking place March 15-19, as well as many other events with the intent of raising money for charity. The purpose of our week is to raise awareness of living with disabilities, and raise funds for PUSH America, our philanthropy which is dedicated to serving disabled persons, pri-marily children, across the country. Our annual Empathy Dinner will be held on March 15, and feature pizza provided by Cici’s. Additionally, we will be working in conjuncture with Cici’s to have a day sometime in April where 10% of Cici’s profits will go towards Pi Kapp’s charity of choice. There will also be a raffle held on this day featuring a two day ski or golf get-away, with all proceeds from tickets sold also going to our charity. Some other planned fund-raisers include at least two roadblocks in the upcoming weeks. All of our efforts are going to-wards our goals of raising awareness of those living with disabilities and raising over $100 per man for PUSH, in addition to many more dollars for other organizations we work with closely, including the Down Syndrome Society of Roanoke (DSSR). Plans are also being made for Alumni Weekend, when we will be hosting our annual Pig Roast put on by some of our distinguished alumni. Pi Kappa Phi, Xi Chapter takes great pride in the long list of alumni who have gone on to play important roles in legislative and judiciary branches of the government, as well as the business and science disciplines. Many of them have shared their wealth and wisdom with the chapter and school, and we look forward to having another great turn out of Pi Kapps who have graduated from Roanoke College, dating all the way back to the early 1950’s!
Additionally, Pi Kappa Phi has been working hard to keep up our high academic standards. While pleased with the cumulative 2.7 GPA our chapter achieved last semester, we are still not satisfied and strive to do better, as we feel there is always room for improvement in our organi-zation, particularly in the field of academics. We elected a new executive council in November, who took their seats at the beginning of this spring semester, and they are eager to continue the traditions of Pi Kappa Phi and continue to lead our chapter to greatness. It is safe to say that the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi are proud of their chapter, and look forward to finishing out
Spring Issue deadline for submissions is April 1. All submissions should be emailed to
