GARDEN SPOTLIGHT
Botanical Name: Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku'Common Name: coral bark Japanese MapleHeight: 30’-60'Spread: 25’-40'Height: 20-25'Spread: 15-20'Form: Upright, vase shapedFlower: Red bloom typical to maples coincides with spring leaf emergence.Site: Sun to partial shade; adaptable to different soil conditions; best color in full sunLeaf: Opposite, simple palmate leaves with 7 narrow pointed lobes; green turning shades of yellow/gold in fall. One of the absolute best “four-season” small trees, coral bark Japanese maple puts on a show all year. This cultivar is best known for its bright pink/red bark that intensifies in the winter cold, especially on younger growth. The color continues into the spring as leaves emerge chartreuse green against the red stems and small red blooms before maturing into a light green shade. Fall color brings a beautiful yellow/gold that grabs your attention. This tree makes for an excellent addition to the garden.

2017 TREE PLANTING Greensboro Beautiful has closed the
application process for the 2017 NeighborWoods Tree Planting Program which provides residents with an opportunity to plant trees on City-owned property; public areas; streets; and front lawns in areas of their neighborhood where:
– Trees have been damaged or lost to storms or disease;
– Canopy cover is needed. Canopy coverage can be achieved by utilizing open space and park land to replant larger trees to maintain canopy integrity;
– Trees have been removed as part of ongoing vegetation management work associated with utility lines;
– Neighborhoods are active and organized, with a commitment to participate in the planting and long-term maintenance of the trees.
Greensboro Beautiful's Urban Forestry Committee will select the 2017 grant recipient in January; hold an Arbor Day Celebration and plant a tree in the selected neighborhood in March to kick off the program; plan and promote the program throughout the neighborhood from March – October; and hold the tree planting day in early November. On planting day, the City will deliver trees and bags of mulch to augured planting locations where property owners, neighborhood residents, and volunteers will plant trees. Following the tree planting, the City will provide maintenance and tree care instructions to property owners; and residents will monitor the health and success of the planted trees.
Community Tree Planting Program
NEIGHBORWOODSNEIGHBORWOODSNEIGHBORWOODS
Greensboro Beautiful has organized and implemented community tree plantings throughout Greensboro since 2001. Since that time, over 2,250 trees have been planted at the following locations:
New Garden Road/Price ParkHolt's Chapel Road Neighborhood
Cone Mills Community Caldwell Park Benbow Preserve Eastside Park Glenwood Greater Kirkwood Ballinger Road Westerwood Southside Aycock Fisher Park Warnersville Storrington
The NeighborWoods Program is a partnership between Greensboro Beautiful, the City of Greensboro, the NC Cooperative Extension Service, and neighborhood residents. Funding for the NeighborWoods program is provided through private donations made to the Greensboro Beautiful Tree Fund. If you are interested in providing funds to purchase trees and mulch for the program, visit GreensboroBeautiful.org to make a secure donation online.

FROM THE CHAIRFor 48 years, Greensboro
Beautiful Inc. (GBI) and the City of Greensboro have partnered together towards the common goal of conserving and enhancing the beauty and ecology of our community. There's a lot to love about our public-private partnership. Because each entity brings unique skills and resources to the table, the relationship is highly effective and mutually beneficial.
While most Greensboro residents can readily recognize and appreciate the outcomes of this arrangement – the educational programs, neighborhood tree plantings, public gardens, garden events, and litter pickups – some may not know the nuts and bolts of the arrangement.
Here's how it works:Greensboro Beautiful raises private funds from individuals,
corporations, and foundations to fulfill our mission. Each year, our Board of Directors approves an operating budget that includes funding for that year's projects and programs. We also contribute to a Tree Fund that supports tree-planting projects and education; and we save for future projects and maintenance through growing endowments held by the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.
Because of our arrangement with the City of Greensboro, nearly 100% of Greensboro Beautiful's private funds go directly to our projects and programs rather than overhead and administrative expenses. The City of Greensboro – through the Parks and Precreation Department -- provides full-time staff, office space, phones, and other equipment and supplies necessary to conduct the business of the organization. In addition, many City of Greensboro Departments contribute time and resources to the effort.
For example, when we conduct a NeighborWoods tree planting, the City of Greensboro Field Operations Department uses their staff and equipment to dig holes, the Planning Department provides the expertise of their City Arborist to select the proper tree varieties, and the Parks & Recreation Department recruits and coordinates volunteers. Greensboro Beautiful provides volunteers, supplies, and plant material, and Master Gardeners help with education and instruction during the tree planting. Both entities work together on marketing, promotion, and neighborhood engagement. Ongoing tree maintenance is provided by neighborhood residents with tree care instructions provided by City staff.
The arrangement works in part because all of Greensboro Beautiful projects occur on public property. We plant trees in the public right of way, not on private property. We develop gardens on public land, not private. Our garden events are always free and open to the public.
The public-private partnership between the City of Greensboro and Greensboro Beautiful maximizes public benefit at minimum taxpayer cost. In the end, this merging of public and private interests creates a win-win for all of us!

February 15-28It's that time of year again. Leaves have fallen and are being
collected. Holidays are past. Green has turned to brown. Then you start to see it: Litter! It becomes so much more visible during the winter months. And because it is so visible now, it seems as if there is so much more of it - on exit ramps, at intersections, in ditches, along railroads, around shopping centers, in creeks and streams, all along wooded areas.
Greensboro Beautiful is compiling a list of litter “hotspots”. We will ask for the community's help in cleaning up these sites as part of our Winter Wipeout. This will provide an opportunity to clean up sites we may have overlooked in the past during our spring and fall cleanups.
How It Will Work Greensboro Beautiful will post litter hotspots on an –online map.
Select a site to clean up, or suggest a cleanup site.– Register your group and your cleanup site online.– Greensboro Beautiful will provide cleanup supplies.– Clean up your site anytime from February 15-28.– Post before and after pictures of your cleanup site to –Greensboro Beautiful's Facebook page.
Report the number of bags collected and number of –volunteers who participated to [email protected].
Dispose of collected litter with your normal trash, or –request disposal assistance by emailing the specific location of bagged items to [email protected].
