Dear Friends:

Today marks the beginning of the most holiest of times. Palm Sunday marks the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Jesus has reached the peak of his popularity. But, how fast He will fall out of grace because by Good Friday, they hung Him upon a cross. How many times in your life have you fell out of good graces with people in such a short amount of time and even like our Lord for the wrong reason? Our Lord can relate to your experience, so don’t give up. There was no defeating the Lord, just as there will be no defeating you, because the grace of the Lord is with you.

While all church buildings remain closed, we will have Palm available at the doors of all churches in our grouping. Feel free to drive up and take some. Church visits are not permitted at this time and the buildings will remain locked.

Concerns about Confession: The Catechism of the Catholic Church, “where the individual faithful find themselves in the painful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be remembered that perfect contrition, coming from the Love of God, beloved above all things, expressed by a sincere request for forgiveness and accompanied by votum confessions, that is, by the firm resolution to have recourse, as soon as possible, to sacramental confession, obtain forgiveness of sins, even mortal sin.”

As a reminder, please continue to practice social distancing and encourage others to do the same. The sooner that we all cooperate, the sooner that we can all come back to church. Please also check on your high risk and elderly family, friends and neighbors. If you need anything at all such as food, prayers or just someone to talk to, please do not hesitate to call one of the parish offices. Please check our website: www.steelvalleycatholic.com for any updates.

One final reminder, if you have not sent in your church offerings, please do so. Donations can be mailed to the parish offices at Christ the Light of the World, St. Max or St. Therese. They can also be dropped off at the parish offices or at the Convent at St. Agnes. The church relies on your contributions to keep us operational.

God Bless,

Father Dan

GOSPEL MEDITATION

April 5, 2020

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Human beings are united in their suffering. When we find ourselves in a painful moment, our first reaction is “why me?” as if we are the only person on earth who ever encountered this challenge. Going through life with a “why me” attitude only finds us wallowing in the mire of self-pity and never seizing opportunities or graces. We walk in solidarity with every human being in the experience of suffering. Believing that the goal of life is the elimination or avoidance of suffering is simply an illusion that keeps us entrenched in a collective myth. This myth distorts us and limits us.

There are living witnesses among us showing how courage and determination can overcome any degree of hardship, pain, loss, or tragedy. Folks finding the normalcy of their lives suddenly torn asunder are faced with options: opportunity or despair, stay or leave. Jesus stands before us as the prime example of endurance and perseverance. He is the One who showed humility through both the triumphs of life (by learning to be humble) and the tragedies and injustices (by learning how to be obedient). To secular ears, this may be perceived as nonsense. But to those with the eyes of faith, they are pearls of great price.

True humility tempers the temptation we have to become complacent and prevents an excessive relishing of life’s successes and affirmations. Learning obedience keeps us faithful to our relationship with God so that we can find the courage to endure any depth of hardship, disappointment, betrayal, or agony. While we may want our cup of suffering to be taken away, it simply cannot be. Somehow and somewhere in the seemingly opposing experiences life can deal us, God is present with His reassuring, compassionate, empowering, and persevering love. To be true to who we are and who God is, we must take up the cross of suffering, even when it’s the hardest and most apparently senseless thing to do.

Only our soul can understand these things, but our minds cannot, so they continue to run to secular ideas and solutions to pain and hardship. It goes without saying that we need to do all we can to eliminate as much senseless, unjust suffering as possible. Hunger, violence, abuse, exploitation, rejection, prejudice, homelessness, disrespect for life, and a whole host of other sins all result in suffering that is within our control. Then, when we face the uncontrollable kind of suffering or find ourselves the victim of injustice, what do we do?

Prayers for Holy Week O most gentle Jesus By your most bitter death Give us a lively faith, A firm hope and a perfect charity, That with our whole hearts we may love you With all our soul and strength -St. Clare of Assisi Here is my heart, O God, Here it is with all its secrets. Look into my thoughts And take away all my wrong feelings. Let my eyes be ever on you And release my feet from the snare. Live with me, reign in me, Make my heart a holy temple, A fit swelling for your divine majesty -St. Augustine of Hippo Jesus Christ, May your death be my life and in your dying may I learn how to live. May your struggles be my rest, And may I find all my blessings in your trials. -Bl. Peter Faber, SJ

Palm Sunday

Loving God, I am just beginning to realize how much you love me. Your son, Jesus was humble and obedient. He fulfilled your will for him by be-coming human and suffering with us. I ask you for the desire to become more humble so that my own life might also bear witness to you. I want to use the small sufferings I have in this world to give you glory.

Please, Lord, guide my mind with your truth. Strengthen my life by the example of Jesus. Help me to be with Jesus in this week as he demonstrates again his total love for me. He died so that I would no longer be separated from you. Help me to feel how close you are and to live in union with you.

Monday of Holy Week

God of love, My prayer is simple: Your son, Jesus, suffered and died for me. I know only that I cannot have real strength unless I rely on you. I cannot feel protected from my many weaknesses until I turn to you for forgiveness and your unalterable love. Help me to share this strength, protection and love with others.

Page 8: Grouping 229 Sunday, April 5, 2020 CLERGY TEAM...Monday: Is 42:1-7/Ps 27:1, 2, 3, 13-14 [1a]/Jn 12:1-11 Tuesday: Is 49:1-6/Ps 71:1-2, 3-4a, 5ab-6ab, 15 and 17 [cf. 15ab]/Jn 13:21-33,

Tuesday of Holy Week

God of such unwavering love, how do I "celebrate" the passion and death of Jesus? I often want to look the other way and not watch, not stay with Jesus in his suffering. Give me the strength to see his love with honesty and compassion and to feel deeply your own forgiveness and mercy for me. Help me to understand how to "celebrate" this week. I want be able to bring my weaknesses and imperfections with me as I journey with Jesus this week, so aware of his love.

Wednesday of Holy Week

My savior, do you invite me to share in the glory of the resurrection? Please stay with me as I struggle to see how accepting the crosses of my life will free me from the power of the one who wants only to destroy my love and trust in you. Help me to be humble and accepting like your son, Jesus. I want to turn to you with the same trust he had in your love. Save me, Lord. Only you can save me.

Holy Thursday

Loving Provider, you gather me in this upper room with your son, to be fed by your love. At that supper, Jesus told us to "love one another" and I know that is the heart of his gift, his sacrifice for me. I ask that I might find the source of my own heart, the meaning for my own life, in that Eucharist. Guide me to the fullness of your love and life.

Good Friday

My Lord, your son has suffered so much, shed so much blood. I was born with so many faults and my nature is so full of weakness, and yet your son Jesus has died on the cross. For me. I know your grace has the power to cleanse me of my many sins and to make me more like your Son. Thank you for your goodness and love for me. I ask you, Father, to watch over me - always.

Holy Saturday

All-powerful and ever-living God, your only Son went down among the dead and rose again in glory. In your goodness raise up your faithful people, buried with him in baptism, to be one with him in the eternal life of heaven, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Prayer to the Holy Cross for an End to the Plague O Cross of Christ, save me. May zeal for your house free me. + The Cross conquers; the Cross reigns; the Cross rules; by the sign of the Cross + free me, O Lord, from this plague. · The Cross of Christ will expel the plague from this place and from my body. It is good to wait for the

help of God in silence, that he may drive away this plague from me. • I will incline my heart to performing your just deeds, and I will not be confounded, for I have called upon you. I had zeal on occasion of the wicked; seeing the peace of sinners, I have hoped in you. · The Cross of Christ puts demons to flight; corrupt air; and drives away the plague. I am your

Salvation, says the Lord; cry out to me, and I will hear you, and I will liberate you from this plague. · Abyss calls to abyss, and you have expelled demons by your voice; liberate me from this plague.

Blessed the man who hopes in the Lord, and does not look upon vanities, and false extravagances. · May the Cross of Christ, which was once the cause of scandal and indignity, and is now in glory and

nobility, be for my salvation, and expel from this place the demon, and corrupt air, and plague from my body.

· May zeal for the honor of God convert me before I die, and in your name, save me from this plague. +

May the sign of the Cross free the People of God, and those who trust in him, from the plague. · Will this foolish people return to the Lord? Make good on your vows, offering a sacrifice of praise and

faith to him, because he is able to liberate this place and me, from this plague; for whoever trusts in him will not be confounded.

· If I will not praise you, let my tongue stick to my throat and to my jaws; free those who hope in you;

in you I trust; liberate me and this place, O God, from this plague, for your name has been invoked in prayer.

· At your death, O Lord, darkness fell over the whole earth; my God, render the power of the devil

tenuous and dim, for it is for this that you have come, O Son of the living God: so that you might destroy the works of the devil with your power, drive out from this place and from me, your servant, this plague; and may the corrupt air depart from me into the outer darkness.

· Defend us, O Cross of Christ, and expel from this place the plague, and free your servant from this

plague, you who are kind, and merciful, and of many mercies, and true. · Blessed is he who does not look upon vanities, and false extravagances; on the day of evil the Lord

will free him; Lord, I have trusted in you; free me from this plague. God has become my refuge; because I have trusted in you, free me from this plague.

• Look upon me, O Lord my God, Adonai, from the holy seat of your Majesty, and have mercy on me, and because of your mercy, free me from this plague. You are my Salvation: heal me, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved.

Priest: Post ‘Divine Mercy Image’ on Front Door for Protection During Coronavirus Outbreak

In this time of calamity, the Marian Fathers invite you to participate in a simple but incredibly powerful act of faith. To protect you and your family, we urge you to post an Image of the Divine Mercy on your front doors.

We have posted the image if you do not have it. How can you invoke such a blessing upon the Image of Divine Mercy? While making the Sign of the Cross over the Image, say: The Image represents the Lord, the Lamb sacrificed for us, from whose Heart flows Blood and Water, the streams of God’s mercy upon the whole world. The Lord promises us through St. Faustina “that the soul that will venerate [honor] this image will not perish” (Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, 48).

He also promises: “victory over [our] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death” and to “defend [us] as [His] own glory” (Diary, 48) The Lord said, “By means of this Image I shall be granting many graces to souls; so, let every soul have ac-cess to it” (Diary, 570). Saint Faustina’s confessor, Blessed Michael Sopocko, recalled additional promises our Lord made through St. Faustina regarding the Image:

When chastisements for sins come upon the world and your own country will experience utter degra-dation, the only refuge will be trust in My mercy. I will protect the cities and homes in which The Di-vine Mercy Image is found; I will protect the persons who will venerate [honor] this Image. The only refuge will be trust in My Mercy.

Father Sopocko recalled that Jesus also said: Let everyone procure for their homes this Image because there will yet come trials. And those homes, and entire families, and everyone individually who will hold this image of mercy in deep reverence, I will preserve from every sort of misfortune. The time will come when all those who do so will give witness to the miraculous efficacy and to the special protection of mercy flowing from this Image.

What does this mean for us today?

Recently, as the repercussions of the coronavirus became crystal clear, we prayed at Mass, “Let us seal the doorposts of our inner thoughts with the protective Word of God …” This is a reference to Exodus 12, where God commanded the Israelites to “seal the doorposts” with the blood of the lamb so that the angel of death may pass over those houses that have been marked. Jesus is the sacrificial Lamb of God. By offering Himself as atonement for our sins and those of the whole world, by the outpouring of His Blood and Water, He freed us from eternal death and sealed us for eternal life. So please, I urge you to put the Image of the Divine Mercy with the inscription “Jesus, I trust in You” upon your doors, as many have done in times of calamity. Remember, it is Jesus whom we worship in this Image. Also, while this act of faith may not guarantee your family won’t be physically affected by the virus, it will guarantee that, by your trust in Jesus, you will obtain His promises of love and mercy, which will surround you and remain in you forever. If you would like a printed copy of the Divine Mercy Image, please call any of the parish offices and we will mail one to you.

Pope Francis Prayer

for Protection from Coronavirus O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We hope entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas - we who are put to the test - and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
