Today we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity. We have a Holy Trinity that now makes up a part of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. The Holy Trinity - Three Persons in One God. How can anyone explain that? The answer is a mystery beyond our comprehension. How can there be three separate persons, The Father - The Son - The Holy Spirit, but yet still all be the same God? This is truly a question that we take on faith as Catholics because our limited human brain simply cannot understand it. And while we cannot comprehend this mystery, as Catholics we know and love this fact of three persons in One God. And by the way, the word “Trinity” does not appear in the bible. The doctrine of the Trinity was formulated over time, which fulfills the words of Jesus in John 16:12-13. I have many things to say to you, but you cannot hear them now. When the Spirit comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but what-ever he hears he will speak and will declare to you the things that are to come. In 382 AD, Pope Damascus I at the Council of Rome declared, “If anyone denies the Father is eternal, that the Son is eternal; he is a heretic. If anyone says that the Son made flesh was not in heaven while He was on earth; he is a heretic. If anyone denies the Holy Spirit has all power and knows all things and is every-where just as the Father and Son; he is a heretic. During the Synod of Toledo Spain 11th Century declare: We confess and we believe that the Holy Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is only one God in His nature, a single majesty and power. We acknowledge Trinity in the distinct of persons; we profess unity because of the nature or substance. Three are one as a nature that is, not as person. Nevertheless, these three persons are not to be considered separable since we believe that no one of them existed or at any time effected anything before the other, after the other or without the other. Notice that people didn’t search the scriptures on their own here. Rather, it took many years and several church councils to establish this doctrine. Office Closed - At the present time the parish office at Holy Name is closed. Calls are being re-directed to St. Max.

Father Nick’s Status - A few people have approached Father Nick asking why he is “In Residence.” Well, at the end of March, Father Nick chose to retire. The reason he did so was to save the parish money. As we were looking to cut costs and we were laying off a few staff members and reducing salaries, Father Nick went from being a parish expense to being a parish asset. We no longer had to pay his salary, benefits and pension fund which saved the parish $40,000. His salary and benefits are now covered by the priest pension fund. This in no way effects Father Nick’s ministry. The bishop has assigned him to what is “St. Therese Parish” which in July will be “St. Thomas the Apostle.” The only difference is that if Father Dan tells Father Nick to do something he can say no. But if he does, I will cut off his coffee supply. We as a parish are very blest to have Father Nick here, who is still high energy. In fact, I am very blest to have such a well working team. Parish and Finance Councils - I want to thank all who have served on these two committees. It wasn’t easy to get us to where we are at. Now it is time to begin anew. We, the clergy team, are in search of members who are willing to serve on the new St. Thomas the Apostle Parish and Finance Councils. Rather than us picking people, we feel it would be better to give those who want to be considered a chance. The number one qualification is you must be willing to work to establish and build up the new St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. You must be able to forget about what was or we did it this way attitude. Parish Council helps to promote community prayer, activities, social gatherings, community outreach, evangelization, to bring new traditions to our new parish and to help promote the parish organizations. Members of the Finance Council oversee all financial and building related concerns and help fundraise, and be a part of St. Therese East Catholic Regional School. If you would like to be considered and interviewed, please write a detailed letter and send it to Father Mike at our administrative office at St. Maximilian Kolbe, 363 West 11th Avenue Extension, Homestead, PA 15120 by June 15th. Please Pray - For the repose of the soul of Joan Jennings, Joan Buzinka and Marie Cloonan, parishioners of Grouping 229, who recently passed away.

First Communion - Due to the number of children, the First Communion class has been broken up into groups of ten so that more family can attend. They will be every Saturday and Sunday beginning June 20th and run through July 12th. Please pray for these young people so that their love for the Eucharist will grow. Fish Fry - Our fish fry is open every Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at St. Therese Cafeteria. You can now eat in or take out. We will seat you for social distancing purposes. For take-outs, please call 412-462-8164. Golf Outing - We are planning a golf outing for August 28th. If there is anyone who would like to be a part of the committee, a meeting has been set for Wednesday, June 17th at 6:00 p.m. in St. Max Hall. Father Mike is the chairperson. Father Dan and Father Nick are in charge of the 19th hole. Come be a part of the committee. Bring your ideas!

Confession - Please note our new confession schedule beginning June 1st will be as follows:

Mondays at St. Therese at 7:00 p.m. - Saturdays at Holy Trinity from 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. - Saturdays at St. Max from 3:00 - 3:45 p.m.

A chair will be set up in St. Therese in the sanctuary. The confessionals will not be used at St. Therese. If anyone wishes to go to confession at Holy Name, Resurrection, St. Agnes, St. Joseph or St. Rita, ask the priest before or after Mass. Chairperson Needed - we are planning to have a Flea Market on July 24-25-26 to be held at Holy Name Church, provided we get a chairperson and some workers. If you are interested in chairing or working the flea market, please call Father Dan at 412-461-1054.

The Feast of Corpus Christi - On Sunday, June 14th, we will gather at 11:00 a.m. at St. Therese for a special Mass. Following Mass, we will have a Eucharistic Procession to the back by the cafeteria for Benediction. Afterwards, for those who choose, we will have the school cafeteria open along with tables outside to allow for social distancing for a picnic lunch. We will serve hamburgers, hotdogs, corn on the cob and watermelon. All are welcome! Meatloaf Dinner - A meatloaf dinner will be held on Sunday, June 21st, Father’s Day, from noon until 6:00 p.m. We will be serving meatloaf, mashed potato, vegetable, roll and salad. The cost is $10. The dinner will take place at St. Therese Cafeteria. If you eat in, we will seat you so that we can practice social distancing. For take-outs, please call 412-462-8164.

Attention: Organizations Using a Church Name and EIN Number - Checkbooks must be turned in to the St. Max or St. Therese parish office as soon as possible. As we move ahead, all bank accounts will be closed the first week of June so that any outstanding checks may clear. We are preparing to open new bank accounts under our new parish name and new number. We Need Your Help! Our YouTube channel has helped us to stay in touch and celebrate Mass throughout the quarantine. It also helps us to reach out to our homebound friends. The more subscribers that we get, the more capabilities that we will have through our channel. To subscribe, go online to www.youtube.com. Once you are on the YouTube site, enter “Steel Valley Catholic” in the search bar. Then click the subscribe button. We need 1,000 likes to reach our next level, and we currently have 719.

A Note from our Seminarian

Hello, my name is Daniel D’Antonio. I am a seminarian for our diocese studying at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, and I have been assigned to St. Thomas the Apostle Parish for my pastoral year. A seminarian’s pastoral year is a year in which the seminarian gains valuable pastoral experience, while further discerning a call to the priesthood in a parish setting. I am originally from West Mifflin and graduated from West Mifflin High School. After graduating from Pitt, I worked in various sales roles before deciding to enter the Seminary. I look forward to meeting and serving all of you the next year and hopefully beyond.

Fr. Hagan Scholarship applications are available for any high school graduate in grouping 229. Two college scholarships of $2,500.00 each year for freshman college or university students in memory of the Reverend Joseph D. Hagan, the founding pastor of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish will be awarded on the following criteria: 1) The man or woman must be a member of one of the parishes in grouping 229 (St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Rita, Resurrection, Christ the Light of the World, St. Agnes, Holy Trinity, St. Joseph) and by way of a written narrative give evidence of involvement in parish life, interests, activities and of prior scholastic achievement. Once the scholarship has been granted, students must give evidence of involvement in the Campus Ministry programs at the school attended, as well as parish involvement. 2) Applications can be picked up and returned at the rectory offices of St. Therese and St. Maximilian. Applicants must provide requested information by June 15, 2020. No applications will be accepted after this date. 3) The scholarship is for one year and is renewable each year provided the student maintains the conditions established in paragraph 1. 4) Scholarship awards will be determined by a Board of Review and all applicants will be notified in July, 2020.

St. Therese After School Care

St. Therese School offers an after school care program. We are looking for NEW, UNUSED toys and games to help replenish activities for our children. Some of the toys/games needed are:

Legos Lincoln Logs

Building Blocks Play-Doh

Board Games Card Games

Ring Toss Game Kitchen & Food Sets

Dolls Racetrack Rug

Hot Wheels or Matchbox Cars Soldiers

Action Figures

Toys and games are needed for boys and girls from ages 5 to 12. If making a donation, please send in NEW, UNUSED toys and games.

If you would like to donate any of these toys/games, please drop them off at the St. Max or St. Therese parish offices or St. Agnes Convent.

Safe Environment Update

As we proceed forward moving from eight churches into one parish it is necessary we have all of our Safe Environment Clearances in order. Many of you have been very responsive to emails and calls made to you concerning clearances needed or those that have expired. Unfortunately, some people have not responded to the emails and calls.

As we become one parish all Employees, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Adult Altar Servers, Catechists, Choir Members (Schola), Ushers (Hospitality Greeters), Fundraising Volunteers need to be compliant. If volunteers do not have clearances required for your role you will not be permitted to volunteer to serve the Parish. We must provide a safe environment for the youth of our school, religious education program, and parish.

The PA Child Abuse Clearance, The Mandated Reporter Training, and FBI Fingerprinting or Waiver is good for five (5) years and then must be renewed. Sister Cynthia will notify volunteers when any of these are expiring and will help everyone obtain a renewal. If you have questions you can contact Sister Cynthia through email [email protected], or call St. Agnes Convent until school resumes 412-466-3554.

PLEASE NOTE: We will no longer be able to celebrate the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Therese. After each Mass, we have to sanitize all pews, floors and doors and there is not enough time to get that done. Also, for those who are homebound and do not wish to come out, the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Therese will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel.

Page 7: Grouping 229 Sunday, June 7, 2020 CLERGY TEAM · 7/6/2020  · Please call 412-461-1054 Music Ministry Thomas Coyne, LEM, Dir. Greg Lesko Nina Mascio Debbie Walters, LEM Faith Formation

Attending Mass - Now that we have been given the okay by Bishop Zubik to open the doors for weekday Mass beginning on June 1, and weekend Mass beginning June 6-7, we have some concerns and regulations in place for our re-opening. One concern is the Saturday 4:00 p.m. Mass at Holy Trinity, St. Max and St. Therese. At St. Therese before the quarantine, the Mass count averaged 400 people. We will not be able to accommodate that number, and as a result may have to turn people away. Seating will be first come, first serve. We figure we can safely accommodate 250 people at St. Therese, 150 at St. Max, 170 at Holy Trinity and 170 at Holy Name. We will also be able to accommodate an extra 80 people down-stairs at St. Therese where Mass will be streamed.

Mass Regulations

1. There will be no Holy water in the fonts. If you want Holy water for home, each church has a font that

you can bring a jar or bottle to take it home.

2. You must have a mask or face covering. If you do not, you will not be permitted in.

3. Be sure to social distance each other except for families that live together.

4. Hand sanitizer has been placed at the doors of the church.

5. Follow the direction of the ushers.

6. Sit in the designated pews. Every other row has been roped off.

7. Use available seats. If you come early, DO NOT SIT AT THE END OF THE PEW. Move in! We

don’t want people climbing over you.

8. There is to be no offertory procession.

9. The ushers will use long handled baskets for the collection.

10. Keep your distance - no sign of peace.

11. At Communion, only the priest and deacon will receive communion at the normal time.

12. The prayer after communion will be prayed and the final blessing given. The priest and deacon will

remove their vestments, put on masks and sanitize their hands. The priest will then go to the tabernacle

and say, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, blessed are they who are

called to his supper.” You will respond, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the world

and my soul shall be healed.” The usher will direct you when to approach the ministers of communion.

You will take it in your hand, remove part of your mask and consume the Eucharist. You will go up

the side aisle and out the door.

13. Those who wish to still receive communion on the tongue must wait until the very end, then approach

the priest only. He will give you communion and in between each person he will wash his hands. You

will then leave as the others have.

14. Remember to maintain social distancing of six feet.

Pope Francis Prayer

for Protection from Coronavirus O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We hope entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas - we who are put to the test - and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

As we celebrate Trinity Sunday this weekend, we count down three weeks to the July 1st merger of our new parish, St. Thomas the Apostle. Perhaps we feel sad about the end of our former parishes, but let us instead remember their successes and accomplishments. We are able to profess our faith today, in the holy triune God, whose love is revealed in Jesus Christ and who has gifted us with the Spirit, because of our former parishes. They shared the gift of faith in the Trinity with us; they taught us how to pray in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They nurtured the faith in us through the celebration of the sacraments. They brought us to the present moment to look forward with courage that we too will be able to hand on the faith in the Trinity to future generations.
