Looking for a great indulgence? ooking for a great indulgence? Come out to the Collings Foun-

dation Headquarters in Stow, MA, on Sunday, July 20th, when

the Collings Foundation will open

its aircraft and automobile museum

collection to a private showing for

AONE and its guests. For those of

you who have never seen this fabulous

collection, it is a real treat!

The Collings Foundation’s collection is one of the hidden treasures

of the Boston area. On display are over sixty-five antique automo-

biles and race cars that include the 1932 Duesenburg Dual-Cowl SJ

Phaeton owned by Fred Duesenburg; a 1940 V-16 Cadillac Limousine

custom-built for Al Capone; a 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Phaeton

built in Springfield, MA; and an Indy Car driven by Mario Andretti. The

aircraft collection includes a rare original 1909 Bleriot Model XI; a

WWII vintage Fiesler FI-156 Storch; and a 1943 Cessna UC-78 that

was formerly

flown by Re-

vere Airways.

Also on display

will be several

owned by the

Charles Gould

Foundat ion .

These three-

wheeled cars

were pro-

duced by for-

mer aircraft

manufacturers

Messerschmidt, Heinkel, and BMW. There is also quite a number

of Indy, formula, and midget race cars, and in general a very eclectic

collection of really interesting cars and airplanes.

In addition, the Foundation’s grounds are themselves worth the

trip! It’s a beautiful setting, with lawns and gardens that complement

the attrac-

tive build-

ings housing

the collec-

tion. We’ll

be taking ad-

vantage of

the surround-

ings by hold-

ing a tailgate

picnic before

the tour! Fill up

a basket with

your favorite

lunchtime comestibles, pack a couple of lawn chairs, and we’ll circle

the wagons for a little dining and pre-tour schmoozing. We’ll also

be inviting a couple of other area sports car clubs to join us for this

event, so you’ll be able to ogle some other interesting cars besides

our own wonderful Alfas before and

after the tour.

Plan to arrive around noon or

a little before with your picnicking

paraphernalia and share your com-

pany (and your food?) with your fellow

sports car buffs. The tour will then begin promptly at 1:00 PM. Donation

for admission to see the collection and display is $5 per person. The

Although it’s not required, we’re asking that you contact event

organizer Jim Miga ([email protected] or 781-729-7567) to let

5Alfa Owners of New EnglandAlfa Owners of New England

Tutto Italiano, utto Italiano, the premiere New England Italian car concorso of the

year, returns to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum on Sunday,

August 3rd. This year’s show should be another great one! Here’s

an excerpt from what the Museum is saying:

“Join us for the largest Italian car celebration in the Northeast.

We have over 200 exotic Italian cars visit us for this fantastic

event. We will be drawing the winning ticket for a new Ducati 1098

motorcycle! We will be visited by guests from the Food Network

who are professional pizza tossers … and more!”

A day of concourses, music, and activities for the whole family

is planned. From the newest Ferraris to vintage Alfa

Romeos, visitors will have a chance to view some of

the finest vehicles in the world. Don’t forget that the

current exhibit running at the Museum is entitled, “Pas-

sion, Design, Performance: The Art of Italian Style.”

The exhibit focuses its attention on a celebration of the

many milestones of Italian automotive achievement and

is a celebration of all things Italian, from exotic Ferraris,

Lamborghinis, and Alfa Romeos to fashion and industrial

design. The Museum is also celebrating a number of

firsts with this exhibit, including a new Italian café and

an Italian fashion show.

In addition, the Museum will be raffling off a brand new 2008

Ducati 1098 motorcycle to benefit the Museum. Tickets cost

$25/ea, or $100/5. The drawing will take place during the show.

For more information about the show, visit www.mot.org or call

617-522-6547.

Once again, it should be quite a scene! You can be sure that

we AONErs will be making our presence known with our tents and

banners, as well as with our shiny Alfas.

Make sure to register early! All cars wishing to park on the main

lawn and/or be judged must register by 10:30 am. At press time,

the LAAM web site says that the registration fee is $35 per car,

but call them and press them on this—all of the other Museum-spon-

sored lawn events are in the $10-$20 range. Registration includes

admission to the show and Museum, and a great goodie bag.

AONE Director Myron Barnett will be performing the important

role he plays as Head Alfa Judge again this year, but he needs your

help! Any of you who have judged the Alfa section at

previous years’ events, or would like to become a judge

at this year’s event, are encouraged to contact Myron

ASAP at 617-840-9800 (days), 617-641-0976

(evenings), or [email protected]. You don’t have to

be a total Alfa expert—just some basic knowledge of one

or more of the model lines is sufficient. If you’re inexperi-

enced, you’ll be paired with a more experienced judge—it’s

a great way to learn what concours judging is all about.

It’s also a lot of fun. And if that’s not enough, you get

to look suave and important in your official judge’s shirt,

which you get to keep. If you’re not comfortable with

judging, the event could also use some parking volunteers to help with

the large number of cars that are expected to attend. Also needed

is someone willing to help with the pre-registration layout (grid) on

the lawn. If you’re judging or helping, it’s requested that you arrive

between 8:30 and 9:00. Please volunteer to help out!

Make your plans to attend this year’s Tutto Italiano!

TUTTO ITALIANO — ITALIAN CAR DAYTUTTO ITALIANO — ITALIAN CAR DAYSunday, August 3rdSunday, August 3rd

This lucky little guyhis lucky little guy is the son of AONE member Roberto Rosa’s friend,

relative, and business partner, Mimmo Iriti. Roberto found the car on

eBay, thanks to a tip from fellow member George Dolak, and couldn’t resist

getting it for four-year-old Luca. Roberto writes, “The kid spends as much

time at my house as he does at his, and every time we drive into the garage

and he sees my Giulietta, he says, ‘Can I drive in it?’ or ‘Can I have one like

that when I grow up?’ or ‘My favorite car is an Alfa Romeo.’ So I am getting

him ready for the future! Luca loves that little Alfa. He was at my house

when I got back from the Elm Bank classic car show with two trophies—a

small one for Second in Class and a big one (about four feet!) for People’s

Choice. [Congrats, Roberto—that car deserves it!—Ed.] Luca looked at

me as everyone was ooo-ing and ahhh-ing and said, ‘Is the little trophy for

my Alfa Romeo?’ So I handed it to him and he ran to put it in place right in

front of the little car. I’m telling you—he’d be great in an Alfa commercial!”

Rainstorms were in the offingainstorms were in the offing for our May 31st AONE Auto-

cross, so we moved it to the following day, which turned out

to be perfect! The cones, timing equipment, and registration

desk were all in place by 9 AM, and the day began.

A variety of Alfas and a few lesser cars (well, a couple of them

weren’t all that lesser) were signed in and tech inspected. A brief

driver’s meeting was held and the participants all walked the course,

which was laid out a bit differently from the configuration we’d used

last year, just to keep things interesting. Around 10 AM, the first

car was off!

Great performances were turned in by many of the drivers, and

it was rewarding to see virtually all of the participants improve their

times (and driving skills) as the day progressed. Andy Kress took the

Fastest Alfa award driving Simon Body’s ’91 Spider (it was agreed

that driving a car that’s not your own was good for two seconds off

your time!). Andy, Randy Wilkins, Brian Shorey, and Ray P. Galloni

took first place in Alfa classes E, F, G, and H respectively (those

were the only Alfa classes with entrants). In the non-Alfa class, there

were a couple of hot, well-driven cars, and congrats go to Bob Lang

who took overall FTD. There were also some “special” awards given

for such accomplishments as Longest Cone Drag. See the table to

the right for the complete results.

And who says autocrossing can’t be a family activity? It was nice

to see no less than three sets of family members (Frank and Saverio

Maldari, Ray P. and Ray D. Galloni, and Brian and Cara Shorey)

taking turns flinging the family Alfa around the course.

Despite the excellent weather and the fact that everyone who

participated had a terrific time, we only had 18 drivers total, and only

12 of those were driving Alfas! It’s a significant expense for our club

to rent the parking lot and secure insurance, and we need about

40 drivers to break even. Also, our autocross organizers put in a

great deal of time and effort to make these events a success. So

we conducted an online survey of our members to see how you all

felt about autocrossing. The results were very interesting, and you

can view them in detail online at www.velocissima.com. Generally, the

vast majority of the respondents (over 50 members replied) were

very positive about our autocross program.

So come out and autocross! The next event hasn’t been scheduled

yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as it is. Come out and drive for

a prize, or come out to work on your driving skills, or just come out

to participate in a very fun club event. You’ll be grinning all day, and

for weeks after!

ALFA TO RUN IN THE 24 HOURS OF LALFA TO RUN IN THE 24 HOURS OF LeMONS!MONS!

- PART 2 PART 2 -

By Kevin ReddenBy Kevin Redden

8 VelocissimaVelocissima

This is the second installment of our sagahis is the second installment of our saga to get a CHEAP

Milano ready for the 24 Hours or LeMons race at Thompson

Speedway in August. As a reminder, here is the description

from the LeMons web site:

The 24 Hours of LeMons is a weekend-long race for cars

purchased, fixed up, and track-prepped for total of $500 or less.

Generally, track racing consists of two endurance sessions, one on

Saturday and one on Sunday, with a late-night intermission for sleep-

ing, eating, and Band-Aid application in between. Count on plenty of

noise, prizes, water fights, and questionably civilized fun before, during,

and after the track sessions. Finally, assuming you’re still standing,

there’s the gala awards ceremony which presents trophies, plaques,

and winner’s purses paid out in nickels.

When we last left our heroes (er, idiots?), they had stripped the

interior of the $500 Milano Verde down to the bare essentials,

hoping to get it back together enough to give it a test run at the

AONE Autocross on May 31st . Since then, we’ve made great

progress…

Last time, we made some patch pieces for the rust holes in the

floor pans out of some old Alfetta door skins. I finally got those

banged into shape and welded on, so now we don’t need to worry

about our feet hitting the pavement! Brian painted them, so now it

looks almost stock (yeah, right!).

Tom used some heavy-duty screen to fabricate a new grill to

keep the flying bits from other cars out of our radiator—looks mean!

Lon worked at getting the seats back in and some new brake lights

installed using a cheap trailer light kit from Harbor Freight. Brian

and Greg spent some time trying to get a nice side-exit exhaust

setup on, but this was foiled by the lack of front jack points (the board

underneath that we were using to put the front part of the car on

the lift was in the way) so they put the stock exhaust back on. Brian

spent a little time on a new paint scheme for the car. Once that

was done, the car was ready for the autocross!

On that morning, I met Brian at Nashoba early so we could get

things set up before folks starting arriving. Brian backed the LeMons

Verde out of his trailer and we used it to carry the piles of cones

around the course—so far, so good! After we got the layout set up,

I decided to take it for a more spirited run around the course to try

it out. The first thing I noticed was that the steering wheel cover

made the wheel way too fat, so that was going to have to go. Next,

as I pushed things a bit, the engine would stumble and hesitate in the

middle of the RPM band, but

it was fine and sounded great

at the high end. I went to

take the first sharp turn and

car didn’t want to! The tires

were complete junk—no grip at

all! Luckily, Brian had decided

to bring along a set of his 15”

wheels with race tires on them,

so, while we continued to set

up the rest of the autocross

stuff, Tom swapped wheels on

the Verde.

Tom and Brian were going

to run the autocross in the

LeMons Verde, while I would

run it in mine and then try the

LeMons car again when we

got to the fun runs at the end.

We were running two groups in

the event and we decided that

the first group would get two

runs each. Then we’d switch

groups, they’d get their two, then back to the first for their final

three runs, etc. Tom was in the first group, so he took the LeMons

Verde out for his two runs. After the runs, he said that the brakes

were really dragging a lot but that the tires felt pretty good. He

and Brian decided to try to bleed some pressure out of the master

cylinder to see if that would help the brakes, so they shut the car

The first official autocross run – new Italian paint scheme and race tires! The first official autocross run – new Italian paint scheme and race tires!

down. Once that was accomplished (it didn’t fix the problem; turned

out that our pedal installation wasn’t quite perfect and the brake

pedal couldn’t disengage all the way), Brian went to start the car

again but it wouldn’t light. After some dinking around, we determined

that the fuel pump had decided at that moment to pack it in and we

didn’t have any spares with us (I wouldn’t let them take the one off

my Verde!). So, after a measly two runs, the LeMons Verde was

down for the count, although it was far better to have it happen

here than in the race!

We took a couple of weeks off after that and just recently started

making progress again. Brian and Tom swapped the bad fuel pump for

a spare and that fixed things, so now they are working on plumbing

in a second pump in parallel to give us a better chance at avoiding

this issue again. While they were working on that, I was working on

a patch panel to cover up the gaping hole in the driver’s side rocker

panel. I got as much welded in as I could, but we’ll need to take the

front of the car off the lift arms to allow me to finish it.

On June 16th, we FINALLY got notified that our entry for the

race was officially accepted! Woo-hoo! Now we have to get crack-

ing and get our roll cage ordered, as well as the harnesses and all

the other stuff we didn’t want to spend money on until we were sure

we were officially in.

You can follow our progress in the blog I’m keeping at http://

alfamilano.com/wordpress/. The LeMons website is http://

www.24hoursoflemons.com/. And we’ll continue to keep you posted

in future issues of Velocissima!
