Humility – All our successes are due to God

But, ‘Let him who boasts boast in the Lord”. 2 Corinthians 10:17

Principal ’ s Ponderings…

Kia ora Parents. Last Friday the South Island Christian School Principals met at Ashburton Christian School to the day. This involved enjoying genuine fellowship, productive networking, and enjoying invaluable professional development. The group meets 4 times a year and make sure that at least one visit includes a smaller centre outside Christchurch. The group are extremely united and committed to the cause of Christian Education. We know there is great blessing when brothers/sisters work together in unity (Psalm 133). It has been a privilege to work with such wonderful godly servant leaders – some of whom are working very hard to further the kingdom of God. I was reminded of this last week when talking to a particular principal who manages to run their small-to-middle sized school while having to teach for 60% of the week due to insufficient funding. I have also been inspired by the Christian schools who have been so willing to assist the network by sharing resources – financially, educationally, and spiritually. There is something very special when you are part of a wider team, leading your own school, but serving the same God. You may be surprised that we have 14 schools represented when we meet together. Here is a list below (you may know some of them):

Amana Christian School (Mosgiel)

Liberton Christian School (Dunedin)

Kingsview Christian School (Queenstown)

Timaru Christian School (Timaru)

Ashburton Christian School (Ashburton)

Rolleston Christian School (Rolleston)

Aidanfield Christian School (Christchurch)

Emmanuel Christian School (Christchurch)

Hillview Christian School (Christchurch)

Middleton Grange School (Christchurch)

Rangiora New Life School (Rangiora)

Richmond View School (Blenheim)

Nelson Christian Academy (Nelson)

Tasman Bay Christian School (Upper Moutere) There are approximately 3700 pupils represented through these schools which make up close to 35% of the total population of all Christian Schools in New Zealand. I know that the principal of every one of the aforementioned schools would appreciate your prayers for wisdom, vision, courage, and grace as they lead their pupils in a secular world that seems to be more hostile towards God’s precepts, principles, and promises. During the time together we unpacked an interesting article written by Michael Fullan (an internationally recognised leading educationalist) sharing the influence a principal can have within their school community. He describes the following ingredients as important for any school principal to focus upon in order to maintaining effective leadership. While there is value in each statement below, there is one which I believe should stand out in every Christian School. I wonder if you can guess which one that would be?

1. Establishing job-embedded learning 2. Building relationships with teacher support staff and

parents 3. Modelling hope and optimism, life-long learning,

and caring 4. Providing needed resources 5. Seizing opportunities to consistently communicate

and stay the course 6. Investing in and participating in capacity-building in

relation to literacy and numeracy

7. Celebrating and building on success. Many blessings, Steve Frost (Principal)

Tips for Learning

Year 7-10:- Is your child struggling? (by Jen Chamberlain) Do you feel like you are always on your child’s back, trying to get them to tidy their room, do their homework, try harder, be politer… but it’s not working. They are still NOT motivated: Check the obvious de-motivators first – poor health, sugary, salty & fatty diet overloaded with preservatives and not enough exercise.

Pupil Achievements

Congratulations

Climbing: Well done to Willow Cook who won her club U12 Climbing Competition with being placed second in both speed climbing and bouldering.

2.3 Scooters – Last week we had 4 unnamed scooters. These had been rescued from the scooter racks at 5.30pm by a staff member who was concerned that they would be stolen overnight. They stayed in the lost property for over a week. Please name your scooters (in vivid underneath) so we can at least return them to the correct classroom. We hate hearing of scooters that have been taken, but also we can't guarantee they will always be brought inside if left at school. Also neighbour has returned a scooter left on the street near school. Please see the Office or David Mitchell to claim it.

2.4 Year 10 Leaders – As part of their leadership development programme, the school leaders will be visiting the Year 6 Camp (Living Springs) on Thursday 17 September from approximately 12.30pm and aiming to return to HCS by 9.45pm. They will also be visiting the Year 8 Camp (Woodend Christian Camp) on Wednesday 14 October from 12.30pm and aim to return to school by 10.00pm. They will be travelling by school van and tea will be provided. Any questions, please contact Mr Frost.

2.5 Cricket – A notice has been given out to all children who are interested in playing. You are welcome to email me at [email protected] and I will forward you a copy of the notice if you haven't seen one. Last season the subscription was $90 for Year 5 and above and $70 for Year 4 and below. The sub for the second, and any subsequent player, from the same family was $45. We practice one afternoon after school each week and the games are on Saturday mornings. I am planning to have practices for Year 2 and 3 on Monday, Years 4 and 5 on Tuesday and Years 5-7 on Thursday. There is a six week break in the Christmas holidays. If we can't fit everyone into one of Hillview teams we will ensure that they are included in one of the Sydenham club teams.

2.6 Rugby Jersey’s – Can all school rugby jerseys please be returned to Mr McKenzie in Room C5 by the end of next week.
