international welcome programme

What is the International Welcome Programme (IWP)?The IWP is a special orientation programme that has beenrunning just for international and EU students eachSeptember and February for over 10 years. IWP is primarily asocial programme that allows students to settle in, makefriends and get used to being in the UK before theircompulsory academic faculty induction and enrolment, which happens the following week.

What sort of activities are included? There are a wide range of trips and activities on offer andeach student can ‘build’ their own personalised programmebased on their needs and preferences. All studentsattend a compulsory welcome session and can then chooseoptional information sessions, including:• Living and learning in the UK• Keeping safe under Tier 4• Driving in the UK

Activities vary from treasure hunts to cookingdemonstrations, picnics to quizzes, city walks to guestlectures from local historians. There are also opportunities tolearn new skills such as world dance, Zumba or drumming!

You can visit local attractions, hear a professionalWelsh storyteller, have a go at karaoke, watch a film andeven show off talents at a talent show. Whetheryou like to party or you prefer something a little quieter –there will be something for everyone. As well as all the funactivities, there will also be staff and current students hereto show you around the campuses, help make sure youhave somewhere to live, and assist with opening a bankaccount.

Why should I take part in the IWP?The IWP is designed to help students with their transition tothe UK and make the process easy and enjoyable. You willhave an opportunity to meet plenty of new students whohave the same concerns, as well as students who have beenhere a while and can share their own experiences. The IWPensures you are fully prepared and settled before startingyour academic journey.

How much does it cost?Registration and most of the activities are free, though thereis a small charge, usually less than £5, for some of theoptional coach trips and meals.

How do I sign up?Being part of the IWP couldn’t be easier. Visit:www.southwales.ac.uk/international for furtherinformation and an online booking form.
