BEFORE YOU STARTBefore you erect your scaffolding, it is very important that you take time to read and understand:

• this Guide, and

• the WorkSafe Guidelines – Scaffolding in New Zealand.

WARNING

These instructions are not a substitute for the current WorkSafe Guidelines. These may change from time to time so make sure you keep up to date with any changes.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTSThis scaffolding package can be erected by a competent person up to a maximum height of 5 m. (highest component)

Any scaffolding above 5 m must be erected by a certified scaffolder. Notification must be given to Work Safe at least 24 hours before work begins.

Find out more about scaffolding height restrictions and training in Part 4.0, WorkSafe Guidelines – Scaffolding in New Zealand.

SAFETY AND SITE PREPARATION

CHECK YOUR SITEFollow the guidelines below to check your site is ready.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

• Check for any site hazards such as powerlines, high winds or bad weather.

• Isolate your work area using diversion barriers. For example, use road cones or sectional tape to alert people to stay clear from the work area. Purchase protection barriers from leading retail outlets.

• signage in place is recommended

• Assess the condition of the ground you will be using. It should have sufficient load-bearing capacity for the scaffolding load plus people, movement, weather and equipment.

• Soleboards should be used to distribute the load of the scaffold and to protect surfaces (eg. wooden floors). The minimum size for soleboards (wooden planks to be placed under the base jacks) are 500 x 200 x 50 thick. The softer the ground and/or heavier the load, the bigger the soleboard that will be required.

• Make sure your scaffolding is erected on private land. It should not be erected on footpaths or in public places. If you need to do this you will need a permit from the council.

PREPARE SAFELYFollow the guidelines below to make sure you are prepared.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

• Check you have all the components and extra tools you need.

• Check each component and make sure it is free of defects or damage.

• Read and understand the assembly instructions.

• Ask a second person to help you assemble the scaffolding. Assembly can be done solo but we recommend a second person to assist.

• Allow enough time. It can take up to 2 hours for first time assembly, reducing to 1 hour once you are familiar with the setup.

• If a Safety harness is required please ensure that you have one and have taken the correct courses in how to safely use a safety harness as well as correct procedures in fall restraint, fall prevention, and fall recovery.

KEEP YOURSELF SAFEFollow the guidelines below to keep yourself safe.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

• Do not erect scaffolding if you are feeling unsteady or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Make sure there are no loose components. All wedges must be completely knocked in and couplers fully tightened. Failure can result in injury or death.

• Always wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) gear including hard hat, high vis apparel and safety boots

• Check your work. Ensure your scaffolding is safe before using.

• Lock any castor wheels before use.

• Be aware that scaffolding is slippery when wet.

• Be aware of powerlines when erecting and dismantling.

• Do not use an external ladder to access the top deck level after set up or climb above 4m in height. Always use the internal access ladder.

Note: For higher scaffolding configurations:

Ringlock scaffolding must be erected, shifted and dismantled under the supervision of a qualified/competent person.

• Qualified/competent staff should analyse load-carrying members during scaffold design and erection to ensure the members can support the intended load.

• Information relating to load bearing capacity and weight.

• Wedges that are not fully seated or couplers that are not fully tightened will not support design loads.

• Post/frame spacing and base board size can be determined only after calculating the total loads on the scaffold and its weight and the condition of the support surface.

• A qualified/competent person must analyse any building or structures used to support the scaffold to

Setup Guide | 7

ensure it can adequately support the intended load.

• Stationary scaffolds more than 30 Metres high must be designed by a professional engineer.

• Inspect all decks prior to erection, especially for structural damage, deformation, rot, rust or other deterioration.

• Only use Ringlock components when erecting Ringlock scaffolds.

• Couplers must be tightened to a minimum torque reading as per instructions.

PREVENTING FALLS FROM HEIGHT

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF AND YOUR STAFF. Follow the guidelines below to check if your site is ready.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

• Undergo a risk assesment prior to erection of the scaffolding to determine if a fall prevention method is needed to be put in place.

• Ensure one of the follow precautions are taken; Fall prevention or fall arrest through the use of a safety harness, or a temporary lift is assembled with safety rails in place before erecting the level above.

• If a safety harness is to be used ensure that the operator has been properly trained in the use of the safety harness and that the site supervisor has adequate fall recovery methods in place.

• The following areas can be used as attachment points, Standards at 1m above scaffolding level, on rossettes at 1m above scaffolding level or on any rossette inside any finished scaffolding level, on any ledger at a maximum 2m above a scaffolding level and no less then 1m or on any ledger inside a completed scaffolding level.

• Fall prevention is always the best method for safety. In the event that fall arrest must be used please ensure that there is adequate clearance from the anchor point to the fully extended length of the lanyard so that the operator does not strike the ground in the event of a fall. Where this is not possible due to low level height then the selection of a fall arrest system shall be made to minimise the risk of a possible injury to the operator.

• Safety harnesses and inertia reels can be purchased from local hardware stores. For example but not limited too, Mitre 10.

• Refer to Work Safe New Zealand for the selection use and maintaince of fall prevention and fall arrest system.

guidelines below

ADDING HEIGHT AND LENGTHADDING HEIGHT

See the instructions in this Guide for erecting the 3 x 5m mobile tower. Please note that any scaffold above 5m must be erected by a certified scaffolder and adhere to the WorkSafe Guidelines – Scaffolding in New Zealand.

Purchase additional components to create a higher scaffold from the Ringlock Webstore.

ADDING LENGTH

Purchase additional components to add length from the Ringlock Webstore.

DISMANTLINGTo dismantle the single deck shelving unit, follow the procedures above in reverse. Make sure to complete another site safety check and avoid hazards such as powerlines or bad weather conditions.

CLEANING, REPAIRING AND STORAGECLEANING

Surface cleaning is recommended to help prevent slipperiness. This can be done by hosing or water blasting.

REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENTS

Before use, check each of the components for defects. If needed, replacement components are available at the Ringlock Webstore.

All components are covered by a one year warranty with a 30 day right of return from the date of purchase.

STORAGE

To extend the life and protect the structural integrity of your scaffolding package we recommend it is stored in a dry area under cover if possible. For example, in a garage or shed. Being fully galvanised, your scaffolding can be stored outside but under cover is best when not in use.
