Gwinnett Medical Center

Background Gwinnett Medical Center started

a new intensivist program in its four ICUs in early 2016.

It needed a business intelligence solution that would provide it with a baseline to show how the hospital and individual physicians performed on a variety of measures.

It then wanted to use this information to determine best practices in the ICU and measure physician performance against these best practices.

Challenge The hospital selected

Dimensional Insight’s Diver Platform as its business intelligence solution, but before it could be successful they needed to: – Get decision maker buy-in– Get physician buy-in– Avoid information paralysis– Change mindsets

Decision Maker Buy-In

A major factor that helped sway the decision-makers was Dimensional Insight’s demonstration of the product and healthcare knowledge.

Dimensional Insight’s reputation in healthcare analysis also helped set the company apart.

The fact that the product was a defined deliverable and allowed Gwinnett to get not only the ICU-specific dashboard they wanted but also solutions for the entire hospital using the same data sources was a plus as well.

Physician Buy-In

For clinical nurse specialists, it was important to show them Diver used the same metrics they were used to.

Many hospitals struggle with getting physicians to buy into performance management initiatives. At Gwinnett, physicians had two major concerns.

Physician Buy-In

Concern SolutionPhysicians were concerned about whether the data would be accurate

As part of Diver, Gwinnett received a set of defined measures along with definitions for each of those measures. Since any user can easily look up the definition for a measure, strong trust in the data is developed.

Physicians were concerned that they would be measured on their performance right at the start of the intensivist program

Gwinnett decided to focus on obtaining a baseline on certain measures. Using Diver, the organization created unique time period comparisons to look at progress. Once the intensivist program as a whole can make progress toward best practices, the data can be used to identify physician-led opportunities for performance improvement.

Avoiding Information Paralysis

Before using Diver information was difficult to piece together, but now Gwinnett is facing a situation where users can be overwhelmed by the aggregation of data in one platform.

To make the data more manageable, the organization is looking at some of the high-profile resource utilization metrics on the ICU dashboards and helping leadership find the areas where they need to begin to delve into the data.

Change Mindsets

Many people in the healthcare industry aren’t used to having timely data at their fingertips. Gwinnett is working to get people to:– Use more timely data– Enable them to make data-driven decisions quickly– See the data following any practice changes– Allow them to continuously adjust

They are also working with operational leadership to get in the routine of using Diver on a daily basis by going to meetings and using Diver to help make decisions in those meetings.
