To Leslee
I would believe, child, maybe some
W ind had found you,
Just to take you where your
Boots couldn't follow.
You once said the sea would,
If you suspect truth in its waters
Imagine your spirit pure.
You have left our night of darkness
In a journey to the sea

SPORTS REVIEW
Head coach Mr. G arland Johnson, assistant coaches Mr. Bill Rodan and Mr. Harry Jameson, and the players did a ll in their power to put together a successful football season. A lthough a record o f 2-6-1 is not very impressive, the LHS foo tba ll team, plagued by injuries and bad breaks, did have a very satisfying season. Many of the losses were by one touchdown or less.
Led by captain Howie Rose, and then by Paul Hoffman after Howie was injured, the boys showed spirit throughout the season, and went into every game fighting. Eric Nelson came up with so many interceptions during the season that it looked as if the other team were passing to him; each one added to a more exciting game and to a more frustrated opposing team.
The amazing soccer team, under the direction o f Mr. A rthur McManus, captured the league championship, w ith the help of high scorer Joe Fuller. W ith a record of 10-2-2, the LHS soccer entered the state tournament, winning the ir first game against Duxbury 1-0, but losing the second game 3-0 against state champion Needham. Tri-Captains Keith Barnes, Bruce M cG lauflin and Steve Rich, with the rest o f the team, showed the true sportsmanship and spirit tha t makes a team great.
The girls fie ld hockey team, coached by Mrs. G ottlieb, highlighted its season by stopping at MacDonald's fo r hamburgers. Besides the expected frustrations confronting any team, the fie ld hockey team encountered a continually confused but cheerful bus driver, who made the four hour bus rides enjoyable. As fo r morale, the team was a lways in good spirits, win or lose. W ith a coach like Mrs. G ottlieb, winning was second to learning a little and having a great time.
The cross-country team, coached by Mr. Bob Cutter, began their surge upward this year. The boys did a fine job and placed well in many meets. Dan Baker and O lin Brown gave much to the team's to ta l efforts. A lthough cross-country is on ly in its second season, it is catching on fast and the team's enthusiasm seems to have no limit.
The basketball team, coached by Mr. Bob MacLeod, showed its great potential in such games as the victory over league-leading Westwood. Award winners Pete G rady and Steve Salt, along with Jeff Strout, Joe Fuller, G reg Barton and "D oc" Maddison kept the team's spirit high throughout the season.
The girl's basketball team, coached by Mrs. G ottlieb, once again had a fine season, ending up with nine wins and one loss. The team's greatest moment came in defeating Swampscott, previously unbeaten in two years, by a score o f 38-34. Combined with the strong defense o f M arcia Hollett and excellent shooting o f G ail W oodworth, Linda Daniels, Kathy Cronin, and Diane Conant, the team was hard to beat.
The LHS hockey team this season won a ll but two games, heart-breakers which they lost to league-leading W ayland. The bovs outshot W ayland 25-9 but "Show boat" Ron Clarke salvaged the games fo r W avland with some areat saves. The team once again continued w hat seems to be a tradition and made the state tournament. They played one o f their finest games o f the year against Melrose, with outstanding performances by a ll members o f the team and crucial saves by goalie Howie Rose.
Also highlighting the year was the selection of the fo llow ing team members fo r the All-League team: First String: Bobby Sparkes, Billy Mintiens, Kim Conlee; Second String: Jackie Conley; Honorable Mention: Brian Hurley (league high scorer). The new coach, Mr. Tryder, made a great hit with a ll the guys and, along with Co-Captains Greg Jaquith and Jack Conley, led the team through yet another winning season.
Coach Bob Lesser's baseball team is very strong this year and there could be a chance fo r the Dual County League crown. There are many fine players returning from last year. Players that should help the team a great deal are Jim Nugent, Jack Conley and W ayne M illen.
This year's w inter track team, coached by Mr. Deems Hatch has improved greatly over the past two years. Its 3-4-0 record can be misleading as many meets were not decided until the very last race. The track meet against league champion Weston was pa rticu la rly exciting. LHS came within four points of Weston, and it appeared as if the last race would again determine the victor; LHS lost by only a few yards. Captain Keith Barnes and high scorer Eric Nelson both kept the morale on the team high throughout the season.
The spring track team, coached by Mr. Bill Rodan, is looking to go a ll the way to the top. Captain Eric Nelson w ill undoubtedly contribute, as he is one o f the league's best track men. "B oom y" Rich w ill dominate the league in pole vaulting and should go over fourteen feet. O ther boys to watch are: Joe Fuller in the broad jump, Keith Barnes and Brian Lawn in the sprints, A lan M orre ll, Dan Baker, Fred W endt, Craig Burbank, and O lin Brown.
The girl's tennis team has much ta lent this year and should do very well. The team's strong points w ill be found in Amy Stevens, Jeannie Northrup, and Pam Gillespie. W ith three such excellent players, the team w ill be hard to beat.
This year's boy's tennis team has the potentia l o f becoming very successful. There are ve returning lettermen: Danny Selig, Keith Quint, Tony De Beurs, Gregg Krause and Dick Cam pbell. There are also many brigh t prospective underclassmen coming up to help out.
The g o lf team, coached by M r. Don Callbeck, has been and should be again, one o f the top high school go lf teams. Every year they have captured the Dual County League crown. W ith such returning pros as Dan Cherney, Pete G rady, Dave Butcher, and Bruce M cG lauflin , they should have no trouble in m aintaining their success.
The girl's softba ll team looks forw ard to another season. Thev have a chance to win a few games barring anv further 27-error innings. Mrs. G ottlieb has hope o f some hitting a t least from the new sophomores. Captain Andy O 'Connor w ill be going fo r her first shut-out.

Let us run
th rough s lithering sands
to touch the sky
an d the m elting sun
th a t d rips a n d sinks
to the sea,
A nd a g u ll cries
sw irling to swoop
on the waves

Let us f lo a t
w ith the w eedy tendrils
th a t swish the rocks.
A n d lie em b raced
by luc id tides
th a t sw athe us
in fo am -w h ite locks.
Let us h ide a t d a rk
from the ca ll o f the lan d

to p la y w ith the stars

w ith the sea-swept sand.
But the lan d

th rough our ea rth ly souls
an d pulls us back
to the tim e ticked days.
W ren ch ed
from the g reen a n d go lden
we must y ie ld
to the cars a n d houses,

Let us w eep
