Term 2 Issue 4 20 June 2019
Dear Parents / Carers We are rapidly approaching the end of term, but still with plenty to keep us all busy. The visiting performance Surf Safari was well received by all students last Friday. We’re fortunate to have these quality productions that tour regional areas, ensuring our students don’t miss out on a variety of cultural opportunities. Our postposed whole school Athletics Carnival was finally held on a lovely sunny day last week. It was marvellous to have so many parents and carers at the oval supporting the children, who all participated with great spirit. Well done to Linda Cain and her crew of volunteers for stocking and maning the canteen on the day. By all accounts, it was also a great success! As this newsletter goes to print, our Stage 2 students will be enjoying the second day of their Aussie Bush Camp. School camps are important and much anticipated milestones in children’s primary school journeys. They provide unique, age‐appropriate opportunities for relationship building among groups of students and with their teachers. They facilitate the personal development of social and independence skills, and promote a positive mindset. And of course, they are incredibly good fun and memorable experiences, so different from the everyday! We send our best wishes to the current campers, their teachers Mrs Kerri Powell, Mr Rob Voorby, Mrs Jess Lawrence and Mrs Shelly Brown. The upcoming weeks will see the commencement of major construction works at our school, with most buildings being re‐roofed. This is a result of extensive
damage caused by the hail storm in 2017. These works will continue throughout Term 3 and necessitate quite a few changes to routines, access and accommodation for all of us during this period. We will keep the community updated as work progresses. On a final note, I’d like to encourage all of you to take a look at our school website. This is currently being updated to include plenty of information about school events and issues. It will also include copies of all of the associated notes to reprint at home as needed – handy to replace any that go missing! These must be returned to your child’s teacher as a hard copy, as per the original note. We look forward to including many more features to facilitate ready communication within our community. Best wishes for a lovely fortnight. Fiona Lewis Relieving Principal

Over the next two weeks, children will be focusing on the skills of winning in a friendly way and coping with losing. The children will participate in various activities and discuss how to accept the outcome of a game, no matter what it is, in a friendly way in order to maintain those friendships. The final session of the Peer Support module Keeping Friends is in Week 9. The children will be participating in a board game, reinforcing all of the concepts and skills that have been learned over the past 7 weeks. They will be reminded of the qualities of a good friend and the skills needed to maintain friendships and make new friends. Each Peer Support group will have the opportunity to celebrate what they have learned and the new friendships and connections they have made. Peer Support coordinating teachers, Mrs Barber and Mrs Wood In PBL lessons the past fortnight, students have been learning about what it means to be a responsible learner. As part of our PBL and Visible Learning journey, we have developed a set of Learner Dispositions to help them on their discovery of how they can be a responsible learner. At HPPS, our learners are Persistent, Resilient, Reflective and Self‐Motivated. For each of these dispositions, a marine character represents the learner in our Learning Pit. These characters take students on a journey through the tools and strategies they can use to overcome challenges. To date, students across the whole school have had the opportunity to delve into what it means to be Persistent and Resilient. The lesson on being persistent saw students brainstorming how to keep on going when presented with a tricky task. The resilient lesson focused on being brave and having a growth mindset to bounce back from challenging situations. Both lessons have been a success across the school, with students actively engaged in learning about the learner dispositions. This week, students will take a look at what it means to be a reflective learner. Next week, we will learn how to be self‐motivated. In week 10 we will bring
them all together and discover the Learning Pit. You can view all of our learner disposition posters and take a closer look at the Learning Pit on our website https://hallidays‐p.schools.nsw.gov.au/positive‐behaviour‐for‐learning‐/learner‐disposition‐and‐the‐learning‐pit.html Thank you to Katrina Lee (Assistant Principal) for developing and designing the posters. Tommy, River, Sonny, Logan, Sunny, Boston, Troy, Harrison, Lincoln, Xavier SOFTBALL Our softball boys' and girls' teams have both competed in a 3 game day at Mayfield during the last few weeks. What a learning curve! I had no real expectations as they had never played a proper game before. Fortunately, they both played weaker teams first, which gave them the chance to learn on the run. The boys displayed some wonderful skills. Harrison Tancred and Sunny Aldridge hit a home run each. Boston Black had golden gloves at first, Sonny Cougle as catcher, while Logan Hopkins was quick moving at
second. All of the boys had something to be proud of by the end of the day. I was extremely happy for them. Today, Tuesday 18th, the boys also played their round 4 knockout game at school against Largs Public School. It was a very competitive match with some hard hitting and great catching by both teams. Unfortunately our boys got off to a weaker start and could not catch Largs who won by 21 to 9. The girls were very nervous on their day as only one student, our reliable pitcher, Maya Ljumanovic, had played last year. The girls listened and learnt very well on the day so that their base running became near perfection. They won the first 2 games comfortably, then in their last game, after a tied, 2 runs each first inning, they came out to do some great batting. They hit 9 runs and then what excitement when they got the other team out without scoring any. The next game for the girls is round 4 against Valentine Public School at our school on Friday 28th June. We hope you play your best on the day girls! ATHLETICS On Tuesday the 11th of June the whole school travelled to Tuncurry where the athletics carnival was held. What a perfect day! The weather was at it's best and thanks to Mr Voorby, who deserves a huge rap, the whole carnival ran like a well oiled machine. The usual track races were run with the addition of a 1500 m event. There would have been some very tired children that night! The finals of the shot put and long jump were also held on the day. The high jump finals will be held at school on Tuesday 25th of June (a note was sent home) so the results will be published after that. Our canteen was run by our capable Mrs Cain, thankyou yet again. Not only did the big kids get to shine on the day but our littlies (infants) were able to take part in their own eight event tabloid. It included the egg and spoon and sack races, also an obstacle course. It even included their very own big kid 100m sprint. I'm sure it looked a long way to some of them! Their happy faces showed what a success it all was. Thank you to all of our wonderful parents that helped in the time keeping and the canteen. Once again, a perfect day! Robyn Channell
