I spoke briefly at the junior assembly on Monday about ‘carpe diem - seizing the day’, taking up opportunities as they arise because yesterday never comes again. Here are some of the activities that students can take up at this school. Chess Competition At present we have a chess competition involving seven Stage 1 students, seven Stage 2 students and twenty one Stage 3 students. Ms Lewis has given of her own time to prepare competition schedules and ensure chess equipment is available for matches. This is a very challenging game to learn so it’s great to see students ‘giving it a go’. There will be a district competition held later, in the year so it would be fabulous to have our school represented in the junior (Stage 2) and senior (Stage 3) team events. Softball Mrs. Channell has once again taken up the task of training the girls softball team. Already skills are being improved as they move towards the start date of the PSSA competition. I’m sure that those students involved will enjoy their experience regardless of the wins or losses. Swimming Our school carnival went off successfully and allowed us to send a representative team to the Zone Carnival at Wingham. Ms Johnson returned with glowing reports of achievements and more importantly, excellent behaviour. Congratulations to all those involved in this event. Guitar Guitar groups have started once again under the skilful eye of their tutor Mr. Groundwater. Mrs Davis continues to encourage this worthwhile pursuit and we noticed a few guitar items sneaking into our ‘Red Faces’ competition at the end of last year. Recorder Once again Mrs Davis’ time and skill have given students the opportunity to realise a musical pursuit. We have all witnessed the improved skills of students as they perform at assemblies, Eisteddfod and other special events. Timbertown Excursion Staff are always looking for ways to make the curriculum more meaningful. The trip to Timbertown was a fabulous opportunity for students to experience some of the aspects of early white settlement in Australia. This experience will be a strong foundation towards their understanding of an era that is no longer with us. I trust that parents will recognise the learning that has taken place and that their money was well spent. Ms Johnson and the staff that made this opportunity available deserve a vote of thanks. National Year of Reading 2012 is the National Year of Reading. The National Year of Reading is about everyone enjoying reading and for keen readers to find new sources of inspiration. It’s about supporting reading initiatives, while respecting the oral tradition of storytelling. It’s about helping people discover and rediscover the magic of books and stories anywhere, anytime. And most of all, it’s about Australians becoming a nation of readers. Students in Stage 3 will be participating in writing workshops on March 15 with published author Aleesha Darlison. Workshops will be held in the library. The workshop is funded by Taree Library as a part of the National Year of Reading. ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

KIDS COMMITTEE

The members from each class choose a student to be their class representative on the Kids Committee. The Kids Committee meet regularly and decide what fundraising events the school will support for the year and in what way the funds will be raised. The Mufti Day for the Haiti orphans raised $250 and we also sent a very large box of supplies to the orphanage.

Many thanks for your kind donations and generosity.

Left to Right Katelyn Sting 11 Year Girl Champion, Halle Ford Junior Girl Champion, Jullian Boag 11 Year Boy Champion, Callum Boag Junior Boy Champion Anika Hudson Senior Girl Champion, Maddison Aiken Junior Girl Champion & Jake Nash Senior Boy Champion On Tuesday we were fortunate to have the Rock’n’roll puppet show visit our school. The show had catchy songs, hilarious comic sketches and endearing puppets. This entertaining performance conveys the message to children that they have the right to feel safe and the actions to address any problems and to take responsibility which will make them feel stronger.

The PSP survey sent home last week provides additional funds and staffing to eligible schools. These funds are to be used to enhance literacy and numeracy programs and student engagement. The survey is anonymous and highly confidential. The survey envelopes are not opened at the school. The results are determined vis statistical analysis that occurs off site. Only one survey is to be completed per family.

Work Experience Students

This week Georgie, Tiarne and Kya from the Great Lakes College attended Hallidays Point Public School for teacher work experience. We loved every minute of it and it was so much fun. The staff were lovely, kinds and really made us feel part of the school. Thank you to Mr Crozier, Mr Voorby, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Brady for allowing us to work in your class rooms. After being at this wonderful school by the sea, teaching is definitely a future career for us. Tirane Johnson, George Diamond and Kya Sunderland

THANK YOU TO FOODWORKS

On Friday 2 March Hallidays Point Foodworks presented the school with a cheque for $100. This is an impressive example of a community working together to raise funds for the benefit of our students. This money is generated from the sales of a relish, a recipe from Megan Bircham, one of our mums. Colin Westle, manager of Foodworks, has generously added the sales of a delicious strawberry jam, for which we will also reap the benefits. The school community would like to thank Foodworks for their support and community spirit.
