Last week all our year sixes took part in the Science and Engineering Challenge competing against seven other schools. Once again Hallidays Point Public succeeded in becoming the Champion School overall. Wonderful work! Thank you to Ms McConnachie for enthusing our students with sensational Science. See the report and photographs on the last two pages of this newsletter. Our debating team competed last week against Bungwahl Public School on the topic of ‘ That we should solve the problems on Earth before exploring Mars’. It was a close call with our opponents only just pipping us. The adjudicator was very impressed with all of our team members’ arguments, poise and presentation. Well done to Jasie Brown, Selina Apolony, Max Hillyer and Cohen Watt and also Mrs Pursch and Mrs Powell for the team preparation. A special thank you, is also extended to the adjudicator Jean Graham for volunteering her time and expertise. Our next debate will be at a date to be advised. I was fortunate to attend the annual Grip Student Leadership Conference at Forster with all of our wonderful school and house captains on Tuesday this week. What an amazing event! Over 300 primary students from local schools learning about teamwork, responsible leadership and thinking outside the box through fun, interactive and reflective activities. Our students gained both insight about being part of a collaborative leadership team and skills that will serve them well with future endeavours. Many thanks to the parents who were able to assist with transportation which enabled the children to take part in this valuable experience. Our whole school Athletics Carnival will be held tomorrow. Students turning eight or over this year will leave on the first buses to Tuncurry at 9am. Younger students will leave a little later. All students will be back at school in time to catch buses home if necessary. It is forecast to be a cool but dry day. All students are to wear house colours (red, blue or green). Please ensure that your child has a warm jumper or jacket labelled with their name. Hopefully many parents and carers will be able to come and cheer on the students at some time during the day. I look forward to seeing you there! On a final note I would like to remind all parents and carers to please provide a reason for any student absence as soon as possible. This can be done by a phone call, note, email or via the parent portal. A certificate is required for any planned family holiday travel during term time. This is simply applied for before the planned leave, via a form available at the office. The administration staff are more than happy to assist with this process. Until next fortnight. PEER SUPPORT Week 5 – Our Rights In this week’s Peer Support session the children will be looking at rights, how we as individuals have rights and so do other people. Activities will also remind the children that although they may find themselves in difficult or awkward positions, they still need to remember to do the right thing. Discuss with your child a situation you were in that was potentially difficult or awkward and explain the decision you made and why it was the right thing to do. Week 6 – Making Choices During Peer Support next week, the children will be discussing and developing ways to be responsible. The activities will reinforce the concept that being responsible is doing what we say we will do and to the best of our ability. This week help develop with your child 2-3 things they can do around the home to show they are responsible ie: feed the dog each night, set the table at 6.30pm each day.
