ASSEMBLY ROSTER FOR TERM 2 2015

MEN/BOYS EVENT We are looking to hold an event this year for Boys from Year 4 - 6 in the company of a significant male in their life. I have surveyed the Year 4 - 6 boys to see what they would be interested in as an activity for this event. I am happy to coordinate the school side of the event but would like the involvement of some men (father/uncle/pop/significant male) to guide this process. It is hoped to run the event in Term 3 so if you are interested please contact me at school so that we can organise an initial meeting. George Ingram – Assistant Principal

VISITING AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR

This term we were lucky to have our famous local children’s author/illustrator Stephen Michael King visit us. The infants children were mesmerised by his reading of two of his books. He also enchanted everyone, teachers too, by his magical and quirky sketching. It was a great experience! Robyn Channel PARENTING TIPS: ANXIETY IN CHILDREN Anxiety is a natural reaction that everyone experiences. Symptoms can include emotional (eg: irritable, uneasy, worry, dread, highly strung), physical (eg: heart palpitations, muscle tension, sweating, breathing difficulties, faintness, headaches, nausea), or behavioural (eg: physically avoid certain places, situations, or objects). It occurs when we think something dangerous, bad or scary is about to happen, and there is nothing we can do about it. For one out of ten people, anxiety prevents them from living their life the way they want. (The School Counsellor has a checklist for problematic anxiety if you have concerns about your child) Check there are no other causes for your child’s anxiety, eg bullying, past abuse, disorder, etc Helping children deal with their anxiety is crucial for an engaging and fulfilling life. Some ideas that may help:

1. It’s ok to let your child experience some anxiety – they need to know it is not dangerous and it is something they will cope with

2. Try to keep your fears to yourself

3. Help your child notice different feelings and how they affect their bodies, eg butterflies in stomach, tight hands etc

4. Acknowledge fears and let them know you will support them, and fears will go away

5. Praise your child for facing challenges 6. Model brave behaviour appropriately – if a

parent is overly anxious and over-protective, this anxiety can easily be communicated to a child including that he/she is incapable

7. If you worry aloud often, or overact with anxiety or catastrophic thinking to minor issues, your child may believe these are reasonable responses to everyday stress

8. Gently encourage your child to approach feared situations - this exposure to feared situations leads to desensitization and reduces fear and anxiety. Gradually expose your child to the feared situation eg go with them to the party, next time only stay for half an hour, next time do not stay (Avoiding reduces anxiety in the short term but exacerbates the problem in the long term!!)

9. Have the same expectations for the anxious child as you would for another child, eg go to birthday parties, make decisions, talk to adults, go on a camp etc

10. Let your child learn to do things on his/her own – if you take over and do it for them the message to them is that you don’t believe they can do it! They may start to think the same way about themselves!

11. Work together as parents – have an agreed way of handling your child’s anxiety

12. they don’t need to be with you all the time (and you need some time to yourself – good modeling)

13. Don’t confuse anxiety with other types of inappropriate behaviour – these should be managed as with any other child’s poor behaviour (see previous newsletter item on ‘Discipline’)

14. Seek professional help via your GP if symptoms intensify to depression, panic attacks, etc (Child and Family Counselling via Community Health may also be helpful – 65551800)

A few snapshots of the fantastic Billabong Zoo Excursion. PEER SUPPORT REPORT This Week – Good Winners In Peer Support this week children focused on the skills of winning in a friendly way and coping with losing. The children participated in various activities and discussed how to accept the outcome of a game, no matter what it is, in a friendly way in order to maintain those friendships. During the week encourage your child to practise these skills in all aspects of life - whether it be weekend sport or choosing what to watch. Next Week – A Better Friend In next week’s final session of the Peer Support module Keeping Friends the children will be participating in a board game, reinforcing all of the concepts and skills that have been learned over the past 7 weeks. They will be reminded of the qualities of a good friend and the skills needed to maintain friendships and make new friends. Each student will receive a participation certificate.

Thank you to Lauren and Lee Vaughan, and to all involved in organising this event.

VACATION CARE As many would know Kiddies Hut OSHC didn't operate vacation care last holidays due to lack of need. Several children were welcomed into the child care centre instead. Again, we are looking for numbers of children who require care for these holidays. Where numbers are sufficient, we will then devise a program to

distribute. Please let us know by 12/6 if you will require care by email to [email protected]

Have you considered becoming a foster carer? There are children and young people needing care in the Manning, Great Lakes and Gloucester regions. Being a foster carer is both challenging and rewarding but our carers don’t have to do it alone. Catholic Care Hunter-Manning provides ongoing support to our carers to assist them in meeting the needs of children in their care. An information evening on becoming a foster carer is being held on the 24th June 2015, if you are interested in attending please call 65395900 to book.
