Term 4 Issue 5 15 December 2011
School A to Z
School A to Z is our new online school community for parents. It
includes a website, a free mobile app and social media channels on
Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. It’s designed to give parents the
support they need to help their children’s learning, wellbeing and
overall development, and provide advice on appropriate use of
technology.
Teacher, curriculum experts, external subject matter specialists and
parents have created the content for School A to Z. It’s practical
and in plain-English, and aligns with what is taught in the NSW
public school classrooms and addresses the concerns parents
have. It’s also been developed with the input of the NSW Primary
Principals’ Association, the NSW Secondary Principals’ Council and
the Federation of Parents and Citizens’ Association of NSW.
Included in the 1,000 content items are assignment starters, easy-
to-read subject glossaries on Maths and English term, ‘how-to’
videos, printable homework help sheets, lunch box recipes, a
technology A-Z, articles, videos and podcasts full of expert tips and
information.
Much of this content was created with a dual purpose in mind-to
provide teachers and year advisors with a go-to reference for
parents on common discussion topics. In fact, many school are
using School A-Z resources as part of their transition and
orientation programs for parents.
Common parent concerns covered by School A to Z videos,
featuring advice from NSW public school teachers, include:
Advice on how to prepare for the various stages of school life
Tips on how to handle bullying and build resilience
How parents can help with primary and high school homework
Preparing for the HSC
How to help with maths homework
Advice on how parents can best communicate with their school
Strategies to build reading skills and how to tackle essay
writing
