Basic Drawing: Week 4

Assignment 1

For your assignments this week, you will be using your skills of observation. Below is a still life that I set up using a few objects that I had in the classroom. As you can see, the picture is in a square format. I used the slicing technique (that we used earlier this year) to break up the composition into different parts.

Using the same technique, I would like you to recreate this still life using a pencil and your shading skills.

Assignment 2

For this assignment, I would like you to find an object that you have around the house to use as your still life subject. Set your object in front of you (about 2 feet away) and concentrate on what you are seeing—relating those lines and shapes onto your paper. Once you are satisfied with the form, go ahead and shade the object in. If it helps, take a photograph of your object and turn it into a black and white picture (to better see the dark and light tones). Below is a sample drawing done by a student last year.
