However this was not the case after a son allegedly raped his mother at Lephengville in Hammanskraal. According to Constable Herman Moremi of Temba police station, this horrific incident was discovered by the suspect’s older brother, who just returned home and heard his mother screaming in her bedroom. When he rushed to his mother’s bedroom he found his younger brother (21) on top of their mother. Moremi told Hammanskraal News that the suspect tried to flee, but he was cornered by community members. They allegedly beat the suspect before contacting the police who later arrested the suspect. He said that the older brother said that this is not the first time such allegations surfaces, because last year his mother told him the suspect raped her but he never believed her. The incident is said to have also taken place last year in August. Moremi said the crime took place around 05h00 on New Year’s Day. According to Moremi, when questioning the suspect in the holding cells about the matter he responded by saying he could have done it, but he was drunk and cannot confirm or deny whether indeed he did rape his mother. The suspect has already appeared in the Moretele Magistrate court for bail application, which was denied. He is expected to appear again. In another incident a man who claims to be an archbishop, known as Joseph Segwati (48) of Leboneng, is in custody for allegedly raping a minor at his place late December. According to some sources the suspect told the mother that he is taking her daughter for a photo shoot. The rape then took place at the suspect’s place. The suspect said that the victim claimed that he signed an agreement with the victim, however the victim disputed this. During an interview with the local radio station, the victim called and said that she was told by the suspect what to write and signed it after Segwati promised to release her after her rape ordeal. She further said that she agreed because she was raped and locked in the house, so she did that for her release. “I agreed to sign the piece of paper because I wanted him to release me as I was also scared and wanted to leave the place.” The suspect has already appeared in the Moretele Magistrate Court with charges of rape. He was denied bail and is currently in police custody. His bail hearing application was to be heard on 12 January 2015, but it was postponed to 22 January 2015. Pastors United Movement of South Africa (PUMSA) Chairperson Motlhala responded to the alleged rape by ‘archbishop’, saying that they distance themselves from the suspect as he is not a member and they are willing to meet with his organization. “For now we cannot comment on the suspect being an archbishop neither can we agree or disagree if he is indeed a leader of any church.”, said Motlhala. MOTHER WITHDRAWS DAUGHTER THREE MONTHS AFTER WEDDINGSbushane Moobi

Marriage is a contract between two affectionate persons with the intention to live together until death parts them. The latter was not the case with Aubrey Kgantsho (pseudonym). A young man told Hammanskraal news that he was married to his wife for three months when his mother in law “reclaimed” her and said she was a little too young to have married. Kgantsho said that all the wedding arrangement were made with both parties negotiating the lobola, which he paid. He lamented that he did not smell a rat when he was charged R 40 000 that included damages as his wife was pregnant before marriage. He added that his in laws said that their family is not to be taken for granted and boasted that their daughter was educated. He said that everything went as planned on the wedding day.The lad said that they have three children all in all and that he misses them as they have also been taken away from him. He said that the worst case scenario is that his wife has also filed a maintenance order with the Bela Bela magistrate’s court. He added that the latter is a thorn in the flesh for him since he intended keeping the children with him whilst they negotiated their mother’s return. He stated that his in-laws chased him away when he visited and threatened that they would also obtain a restraining order against him. He said on the

other hand that his wife was allegedly involved in an extra marital affair and her mother was aware and did nothing about it.Tsholofelo Moipone, his mother in law, proudly told Hammanskraal News that it is true that she withdrew her daughter from marriage. She said that she believed in the fact that her daughter is still too young to have married. She reasoned that at 28 years of age, she would not face the challenges that life would throw at her. She relayed that life’s hurdles are many and some of them would topple her and she would give up in life. Moipone alleged that her son in law was very abusive which he vehemently denied. She further alleged that her daughter had sustained serious body injuries during his outbursts.Moipone further relayed that

her son in law had quit his job only because he is jealous. She said it was in the interest

of her daughter and her three grandchildren.

She stated that his demand for his lobola payment would be

used to feed and clothe the children. The son in law

denies all the allegations and said

that his in laws threaten him with death and subsequent

witchcraft. He stated that he fears for his life at times at night and had thus far requested for the company of his cousin for safety reasons.Kgantsho said that he had gone for counseling and that he wants his lobola money back and that he was retrenched from work. He promised that he is on top of everything and is due for work sooner other than later. He added that the facts that he quit his job and was abusive are just malicious rumors that had been spread to discredit him. He concluded that his happiness was cut short and that he had been deprived of his good wishes and hopes for a better future.

Basic education minister Angie Motshekga announced the 2014 matric results on Monday, 05 January 2015 in Sandton. The national pass rate percentage declined from 78, 2% 0f 2013 to 75, 8%. Announcing the results, Motshekga congratulated the class of 2014 and applauded teachers and all education stakeholders for an excellent performance in 2014 matric exams. Though the class of 2014 was the first ones to write Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) exam, Motshekga admitted her disappointment in the national pass rate percentage obtained. Gauteng province left no stone unturned when it came on top of all provinces with a pass rate of 84,7%, North West 84,6%, Free State 83,3%, Western Cape 82,8%, Mpumalanga 79%, Limpopo 72,9%, Kwazulu Natal 69,7% and Eastern Cape was the worst performing province with a pass rate of 65,4%. According to the Gauteng department of education, Makgetse high school came on position three in the category of top three priority schools with most bachelors in Tshwane North. Out of a number of two hundred and twenty seven (227) learners registered to write final exams at the school, one hundred and twelve learners (112) achieved bachelors. The school headmaster Mr. James Matshego said, they managed to produce best results because teachers and learners themselves went an extra mile and parents were also involved. “We had extra classes even on Sundays and during the school holidays which were compulsory to all grade 12 learners in our school”, said Mr. Matshego. Out of the two hundred and twenty seven learners who wrote the final exams, only twenty six failed. Seventeen obtained higher certificates and seventy two obtained diploma.According to Mr. Madzena Hammanskraal

top five best performed schools for 2014 cycle are as follows in a numerical order: 1. Ratshepo High 93%, 2. Boitshepo secondary 91%, 3. S’khululekile secondary 91%. 4. Makgetse high 90%, 5. Hosea Kekana high 89%. He congratulated all the schools which performed very well and encouraged them to keep the same momentum for 2015. Schools such as Hans kekana high and PHL Moraka didn’t perform at their level best. Mr. Madzena further said that the national pass rate percentage might have dropped to 78, 2% due to the introduction of Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). “Though some schools performed very well, we believe that in 2015 they would have acclimatized themselves with the curriculum and the results will be outstanding”, explained Mr. Madzena. Mr. Madzena also applauded the teachers for their best efforts and the education districts for supporting the educators throughout the year. He added that a learner from Ratshepo high school and another one from Skhululekile secondary school were amongst top performed best learners who were honoured by the MEC of basic Education in Gauteng, Mr. Panyaza Lesufi. One of them Isaac Modisa from Skhululekile secondary obtained 100% pass in maths and physical science and Charmaine Maluleka from Ratshepo high obtained 100% pass in physical science and 98% in maths. One learner from Makgetse high school, Khanyisile Chile, obtained distinctions in maths, physical science and life science. Hammanskraal News would like to congradulate all the learners who performed exceptionally well, and to those who did not make it, we are behind your back we know you will make it next year. Those who are doing matric this year, work hard the whole community is in your support.

TIGHT LAWS FOR CRACKER USE WERE ENFORCED OVER HOLIDAYSSebushane Moobi

The sky is decorated with bright colors on New Year’s Eve whilst the smoke fills up and the air is polluted. Picture: Sebushane MoobiThe use of crackers is very common during the December festive season celebration. The mode is however changing with the passing of time. Formerly the crackers were lit during both days and things have changed as they are preferred over the end of the year especially at twelve midnight. The laws regarding the use of these crackers were tightened last year especially in Gauteng Province.According to the Gauteng SAPS, parents were urged to be strict over the use of crackers for the children. It was emphasized that strict parental guidance be observed. On the other hand, it was emphasized that those who were found in violation of these rules was subject to a R1500.00 fine. It was added that crackers may also break window panes and elders were urged to be strict, light the crackers themselves and

be 500 meters away from houses. It was for security purposes and sensitive people especially babies and elders. SAPS voiced that some elders tend to turn a blind eye at the rules and regulations on the use of crackers. Gauteng Saps advised over other media sources that fellow residents, citizens and domestic animals be respected. The thunderous sound is scaring to sensitive people especially those that have heart related problems. Joseph Mokete told Hammanskraal News that he has a nasty experience with crackers. He stated that he had lost one of his index fingers from a cracker shot. Mokete said that he had run out of cigarettes in 1989 during the New Year celebration and requested for some from another man. He said that he did not smell a rat when he was offered a cigarette that allegedly had a cracker that exploded between his index and the middle fingers. He relayed that his upper lip was also severely cracked and had to be stitched at Bela Bela hospital. “I hate crackers like hell if you like”, he

lamented. Mokete explained that he had to educate his children all about that sad experience and they no longer worry him about crackers any more.Mokete further said that some parents use the lazes fair policy and leave the children to themselves with the use of these life hazards. He said that he also had to drive a neighbor’s son to hospital after a cracker shot. The SPCA also voiced concern over this time of the year when pets go astray. They told Hammanskraal News that there are people who do not care about their pets and advised that these pets be put in a safe place and away from cracker sounds. The SPCA in Pretoria explained that animals are such agreeable friends that ask no questions or pass any criticism and also need to be respected The spokes person who wanted to remain anonymous said that they have received more stray animals during the festivities more than any other time of the year.

Poverty is one of the major challenges in our country and sometimes some learners have to learn with empty stomach and only survive by receiving foods at their respective schools. As the results some learners are unable to concentrate during their studies however there are feeding schemes at schools. While some children are always happy for festive holidays some who are orphans sometimes prefer being at schools because they are able to eat. PROTEA Bookshop put the smile at some of the learners by giving them food parcels during last year school closure.According to an employee of Protea Bookshop, Accountant Tinyiko Mpitsa says that their company has been distributing stationary to Morotola Primary School for the past three years so they found it befitting to plough back to the school by giving food parcels to the learners who are orphans. “This is part of our community social investment to show appreciation for making a business with the school” said Mpitsa. “Some learners depend on school’s feeding scheme so we wanted to give them food to eat during the December holidays”.Mpitsa says that they gave learners food parcels which comprises of mealie meal, samp, meal rice, baked beans, canned fish and bath soap. We found appropriate because some of these learners they don’t have parents they stay with their grandparents and they have to depend on social grants she said. Mpitsa told Hammanskraal News that the owner also managing director Dr. Nicola Stassen who

started selling books in the street in 1992 is very passionate about education. She further told Hammanskraal News that they have also donated books at Hammanskraal Community library and their intention of building a library for Morotola primary school.William Mabunda deputy principal of the school told Hammanskraal News that they asked donations of food parcels from Protea Boekwinkel because most of our learners are orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). “We wanted learners to be direct beneficiaries because most of them depend on school‘s nutrition programme so we wanted to give them smile for the festive season” said Mabunda. He said that they are very happy about the relationship they have with Protea as they always deliver books on time and giving learners food is a bonus.

Deputy Chairperson of School Governing Body (SGB) Meshack Galane said that they are very thankful to Protea for what they have done for the learners as some have no parents and I was touched by the smile of the learners who received the food. Tshiamiso Mahlangu (10) of Grade 3 said that he is very happy about the food parcel and would like

to thank Protea because they don’t just give their school books but food also. Phindile Maluleka (13) of Grade 7 told Hammanskraal News that she is very happy she received the food parcel and the help they receive from Protea Bookshop.

Green economy is recent form of trade with the influence of climate change and the global community has been urged to insure that they partake in insuring that they reverse the situation through recycling amongst those who have adhered to that are some individuals while some are companies. Collecting bottles, cans, plastic, papers and boxes is what the middle aged Irene Sekhu from Kanana village does for a living. Although she has received some criticism from some of her neighbours in the past, she never allowed these negative talks to deter her from trying to make a living for her family by collecting these items. Sekhu said she is doing this so that she can be able to support her family and not borrow from her neighbours. “I started this project three years ago, and the money that I make helps me to buy electricity and some food in my house”, said Sekhu. Meanwhile, one resident who opted to remain anonymous said that, what Sekhu is doing is not acceptable because, she is collecting rubbish to her yard which has never been taken

away. “ when it is raining or if it gets too hot, there is an uncontained bad smell that comes from her yard to our houses and according to me, that situation is causing health hazards to our lives”, explained anonymous. However, Sekhu said these are just talks from people who are trying to discourage her and she rejected the claims that her rubbish is causing a bad smell around the area. “After collecting these items I pack them in a systematized manner and then later call the relevant company to come and collect them twice or three times a year”, said Sekhu. She said out of those items she makes about hundred to two hundred rand per collection. She revealed to Hammanskraal news that between the year two thousand and six and two thousand and eight, she had a business to sell chickens and yet again, there were complaints from her neighbours who said her chickens were causing a smell around the area. Then, her chicken business collapsed. But this time she vowed that she will not back off from collecting these items to support her family.

Recycling is my daily breadBy Angie Ramahanedza

Wildlands Conservation Trust, has planted 600 trees across six local Gauteng schools as part of Valprè’s commitment to uplifting the local environment and communities.252 of the trees planted over the course of two weeks, originated from a recycling initiative Valprè recently held at the FNB Whisky Live Festival in Sandton. During this initiative, Valprè committed to planting three trees for every 10 of its PET bottles returned to the Valprè stand at the festival,

tying in with the PlantBottle™ Packaging technology that Valprè’s PET bottles are made from. The breakthrough innovation in packaging is the first-ever fully recyclable PET plastic beverage bottle made up to 30% from plants. Through Valprè’s partnership with Wildlands Conservation Trust, the remaining 348 trees were donated to ensure each of the six schools would receive 100 trees.Speaking about the initiative Sharon Keith, Marketing Director for Coca-Cola South Africa says “Valprè Spring

Water is a premium brand that cares for the environment and aims to educate consumers to make decisions that are in the best interest of our environment and its sustainability. We hope our latest project will inspire the youth to think about tomorrow”.Dr Andrew Venter, CEO of the Wildlands Conservation Trust echoes Keith’s sentiments stating, “Coca-Cola is a longstanding partner of the trust and have always been passionate about supporting our vision of ‘a sustainable future for all’. Wildlands are so grateful to have partners that are focused on sustainability as we cannot make a significant impact on our own; we need everyone to be inspired to make a difference for the sake of future generations”.Consistent with Valprè’s ethos of caring for the environment, the Company planted trees at schools in the Refilwe Township in Cullinan and the Zithobeni Township in Bronkhorstpruit to raise awareness amongst the youth - the next generation of conservation activists. The six schools that benefitted are Sedibeng Primary School, Chokoe Primary School, Laerskool Witpoort, Kgoro Primary School, Vezulwazi Primary School and Dan Kutumela Secondary School.

Foreign coaches dominate Afcon CupThe 2015 Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Equatorial Guinea on Saturday is dominated by foreign coaches.This situation has raised concerns about the direction that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is taking in developing football and local coaches on the continent. While the beautiful game’s pundits are continuing to preach about the African football renaissance or the development of footballers, most of the CAF affiliate associations snub domestic coaches and prefer to employ foreign coaches to coach their respective senior national teams. In the Equatorial Guinea Afcon 2015 there will only be three African born coaches leading national soccer teams. They include: the Democratic Republic of Congo team, which will be led by Florent Lebenge who was born in Kinshasa DRC;

the Zambian national team, which is coached by Zambian born Honour Janza and the South African team, which is led by the industrious Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba. The other 13 countries taking part in the Afcon 2015 tournament will be led by foreign coaches. So, it is ironic that CAF has the ambition to see an African team lift the World Cup trophy in the near future. That seems to be a far-fetched dream, as most of the continent’s football governing associations have little faith in their own home-grown coaches. Africa is optimistic that the three African born coaches will prove the other countries wrong by winning the AFCON.

This would make history and remind CAF and its OUR AFRICAN COACH: Soweto born Coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba will lead

Bafana Bafana in Afcon 2015.
