CAREGIVERS CORNER
The Joys and Challenges of Caregiving Mr. Nathaniel I. Gaines, Graduate Intern
Wilmington University
My name is Nathaniel I. Gaines. I am a Son, Father, Husband and Caregiver. I have been tasked along with my sister to care for our aging mother, all while I tend to the needs of my wife and daughter both of which have incurable life challenges. I often find myself overworked and totally stressed out, but the need for my assistance never stops. If only for a moment I find myself thinking but I know that if the tables were turned theyd be doing the same for me. Any disability can present a challenge not only to the caregiver, but most of all the person affected. We oftentimes fail to think about life from their perspective as they are asking for this or that but just imagine all the I remember whens or I wish I could do it myself moments they have every waking moment just hoping someone really understood. I wish that I could turn back the clock for my loved ones to a place in the fabric of time that they were free from pain and suffering and that their joy would once again be full. I am thankful for the years that the Lord God of Heaven has given me thus far with my mother and I pray that his will be done as I know it shall in the lives of the family members under my care and his watchful eye. Even with the challenges of the non-stop need, I am glad that I am able to be of help and assistance to those I love. The lessons that caregiving teaches are unlike any other. I have learned to be more thankful and less quick to complain and just thank the Lord for his grace and mercy towards us in spite of it all. The greatest challenge of being a caregiver is not being able to experience the joy of having someone to care for. I may be a help to them, but truth be told they are a blessing to me. Pay it forwardnever payback. Editors Note: Nathaniel Nate Gaines was an intern at Wilmington Senior Center from January April 2015. He will graduate in May with a Master of Human Services Administration degree from Wilmington University.

OLDER AMERICANS MONTH 2015: GET INTO THE ACT Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of this years celebration is Get into the Act, to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. The theme also reflects on the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act into law in July 1965. Since that time, the Act has provided a nationwide aging services network and funding that helps older adults live with dignity in the communities of their choice for as long as possible. These services include home-delivered and congregate meals, caregiver support, community-based assistance, preventive health services, elder abuse prevention, and much more. By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can Get into the Act. Wilmington Senior Center will highlight Get Into the Act with an Exhibition of Creations during the week of May 18th. We will also promote taking charge of our health with presentations about RiteAid Wellness Program, Fall Prevention, Healthy Kidneys and Medicare Assistance.

Call us today for your FREE CREDIT REPORT AND SCORES! 302-651-3401 or 302-651-3427
Credit reports and credit scores are used in a lot of decisions these days. Traditional areas for credit reports to be used are for car loans, credit cards, and the like, but today apartments, jobs, even some utility companies are using credit reports to determine if, or under what circumstances, they will accept applicants as employees or customers. Unfortunately, about 1 in 4 credit reports have mistakes in them big enough to negatively impact those decisions. That is why it is so important for people to check their credit report and make sure that everything is correct. If there are mistakes on your credit report, a financial coach can help you get those items corrected. If you want to do even more and improve your credit score, a financial coach will help you create and implement a plan. Call a $tand By Me 50+ financial coach today to see and review your credit report and/or see what to do to improve it at 302-651-3401 or 302-651-3427 in New Castle County and 302-337-7284 X155 or 302-415-1542 in Kent and Sussex Counties.

One in 5 American children lives without consistent access to adequate food. For these children and their families, summer can be especially hard, as they lose access to the school breakfasts and lunches that they rely upon. During the week of May 4-8, Executive Director Sue Getman will collect food for hungry children to be donated to the Food Bank of Delaware as a part of nationwide initiative of Wake Forest University, her alma mater. Suggested donations to be placed in the box in our lobby are: peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, boxes of macaroni and cheese, and canned ravioli and spaghetti and meatballs. Thank you in advance for your help.
