DAVID A. AGUILAR, former director of public affairs and science information at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, is an internationally recognized author, lecturer, astronomy expert, naturalist, and space artist whose expertise lies in explaining the fascinating connections between the universe and ourselves. Saturday, October 6 PALERMOSicily’s capital of Palermo was the envy of Europe under the Normans, whose enlightened rule produced the golden mosaics you will see in the 12th-century Palatine Chapel, described by Guy de Maupassant as “the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of.” After lunch on board, drive to Monreale to admire the brilliant mosaics in the magnificent Norman cathedral before a special reception at Palazzo Gangi, where the ballroom scene in The Leopard was filmed. Spend three nights in Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the medieval walled city of Mdina, Malta’s old capital, and in quaint Rabat, explore the newly reopened Wignacourt Museum, containing a labyrinth of Hypogea, art galleries, and relics from the Knights of Malta. Also, see the Domus Romana, a first-century B.C. Roman house with exquisite mosaics; and discover the Neolithic Temple of Hagar Qim. At St. John’s Co-Cathedral, view Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Beheading of St. John the Baptist, and see tapestries and armor at the Palace of the Grand Masters.
