HASTINGS/HAVELOCK NORTH COMBINED PARISHES www.hastingscatholic.org.nz REFLECTION FOR TODAY The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. We affirm again and again our belief in the Holy Trinity. Prayers, such as, “Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. Amen,” speak of this mystery of the Christian faith, of the individual uniqueness of each person of the Trinity, while simultaneously speaking of the complete unity that exists. Each one, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is a revelation of different roles and functions of God, yet they are One, existing in perfect harmony in will and purpose. A mystery has been defined as a truth of faith that is entirely beyond the natural powers of reason to apprehend. Many people have attempted to explain the Holy Trinity. The reason the attempts fall short is that the Holy Trinity, by its very nature, defies explanation. That is why it is called a mystery and requires faith to accept its reality. Someone once wrote, “If we try to understand the Holy Trinity we may lose our mind: but if we deny the Holy Trinity we will lose our soul.” The Holy Trinity is the fundamental mystery of our faith, professed at our baptism, renewed at confirmation, and acclaimed at each Mass. ST JOHN’S COLLEGE

Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost Sunday with the combined parishes of Napier. What a wonderful, vibrant celebration of our Catholic faith. This week as a college we are celebrating the outstanding results achieved by our Culinary Art team at a recent competition. The team won five silver medals and three gold medals. They also won the teams event and achieved four 1st in a class. We are holding our “Taste of St John” day on Friday 5th June. This is an exciting day for Yr 8 boys – they attend the College for the day. If you would like to send your son or know of any families that have Yr 8 boys that would like to attend please ask them to phone the College office 878 6853. Our Open Evening is 2nd August at 6pm

ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

It was an exciting Parents Maths evening where mums and dads came to new understandings about how maths strategies are taught at different levels throughout the school. And our Open Day on Friday showed everyone what engaged and enthusiastic teachers and students we have at St. Mary’s. Welcome home Father Nathaniel!!!!!

ST JOSEPH’S JOTTINGS -

This week our students were dazzled, amazed and thoroughly entertained by artists from Zirka Circus. “Constable Phil – you rock – and so say all of us!” Constable Phil Young, Youth Aid Officer with the N.Z. Police retired last week. His positive contribution to our school over many years is acknowledged and will be sadly missed by both staff and students. As a school we are truly blessed by the community that surrounds us. Sandra Connor Principal

ST. THOMAS MORE SOCIETY

Judges, solicitors and barristers, law students. The St Thomas

More Society is holding its annual Mass and dinner on Monday 22

June. The Society turns for inspiration to St Thomas More the

sixteenth century lawyer who was martyred for his refusal to bend

(we might say today spin) his religious beliefs in order to appease

the prevailing political demands. You do not need to be an official

member of the Society to attend. Mass will be at the Cathedral of

the Sacred Heart on Hill Street Wellington commencing at 6.00pm

and dinner will follow at the Wellington Club at 7.00 pm for 7.30.

Members of the Catholic legal fraternity in our Diocese have

tended to support this gathering as we do not have one of our own

in Palmerston North or elsewhere. I shall be attending as shall

Cardinal John Dew. All welcome. Please indicate your intention to

attend by emailing Peter Churchman QC by 15 June:

NOTICES FOR ST PETER CHANEL

Change of Office Time - St Peter Chanel Office will be open from 9am-11am Tuesday 2nd June to Friday 12th June PLANNED GIVING TAX RECEIPTS - Are now available for collection 1st April 2014 to 31st March 2015. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION 2015. Preparation began on the 20 May for children making their First Holy Communion in 2015. Please diary the following dates: Friday 5 June Reconciliation for First Holy Communion after Mass at Madonna Maria. Sunday 7 June First Holy Communion Day 10am S.P.C. This year 26 children will make their First Holy Communion at the 10am Mass at St.Peter Chanel on the 7 June. A team of helpers is required to set up, serve and tidy up after the celebration in the Parish Hall after Mass. Many hands definitely make light work so please volunteer to help with the dish washing, the vacuuming, the serving, etc etc. Please contact Stephanie Allen, Teresa Neilson or Fathers Vince and Nathaniel this week. THANKS!!!! DISHWASHER - We love ♥our volunteer dishwashers who help at any functions in our Parish Centre, but we think our parishioners and visitors would be kept safer from ‘bugs’ if we installed a dishwasher. It needs to be a commercial washer / sanitiser which would cost about $4000, but we think that you, our parishioners and visitors are worth it. Our problem is that our budget is tight, so we are asking for your help. We know we ask for your financial support every year, and without it we could not function at all, but this is a one-off request. If anyone would like to contribute financially to help us to purchase a commercial dishwasher, large donation or small, we would be extremely grateful. You can put it in an envelope with DISHWASHER written on it (with your name if you want a tax receipt – every donation qualifies for a tax rebate), donate online (02—0630—0288045—023)or drop it into the office. With prayerful thanks, the Finance Committee
