Message from the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

This week we have continued to focus on the academy value of excellence. We recognise that all our

academy values lead to excellence, alongside having a growth mind set and self-belief.

Excellence is an act we repeatedly do and a result of small acts, performed well, consistently and over time.

The children and I looked at how we demonstrate excellence.

We looked at this in the context of learning from others in life and film. Through

watching the extract from the film, ‘Zootopia’, we witnessed rabbit Judy Hopps fulfil

her childhood dream of becoming a police officer. Determined to prove herself, she

jumps at every opportunity, against all odds. The film also exemplifies one of our British

values, ‘Tolerance’ alongside the celebration of personal growth.

We agreed to aim for excellence using the

arrows below as a guide.

Please encourage your children and family

members to consider these prompts and aim

for excellence. I have recently set myself a

new goal to replay my abandoned guitar

and during the half term break I dusted off

my guitar and in my pursuit to learn some

new songs. Song one – done!

Over the last couple of weeks, I have seen excellence showcased across

the academy in so many ways. Our children’s written work, their creative

work and their polite manners are just a few examples of the excellence

seen. I particularly enjoyed seeing Jefferson’s 3D model of the natural

world, showing the impact of pollution on the earth and its creatures.

I have also heard some amazing versions of ‘the Enormous Turnip’, by year

2 children and enjoyed reading finished published pieces by year 6. The

quantity and quality of the work is truly excellent!

Let’s continue to achieve excellence together and celebrate our steps –

big and small! Why not send in an example of excellence from home to be

a future feature in news and views.

As always, enjoy your family time together.

EYFS Our topic this week in Nursery has been dinosaurs and the children have

truly shown their knowledge of dinosaur names, we have felt a little on the

back foot as there knowledge has been fantastic! We have been learning

about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and the children tried to guess

which dinosaurs fell into which category. The Nursery Team

Reception have enjoyed learning more facts about creatures that live in the sea this week and are looking

forward to our forthcoming trip to Sea Life Adventure in a few weeks’ time. The sea creatures that children

made for homework look amazing and are now being proudly displayed in our classrooms. Our caterpillars are

starting their transformation into butterflies and are currently in their chrysalis stage. How exciting! The

This week Year 3 have got back down to business after our visitors from last week. In maths we have been

recapping fractions in all its many shapes and forms. For writing we have been looking at an alternative

perspective on Old Leigh.

Topic wise we have been continuing our exploration of the qualities of a good leader and the pros and cons of

graffiti in our local area. We have also been raising the profile of kind words and communication in and out of

school. Another full on week in the life of Year 3 at Darlinghurst. Mr Dunne, Dune class

This week in Year 5 we have been writing stories with morals based on Native American folktales. We have

enjoyed creating settings and morals and deciding which animals to use. In maths, we worked hard to solve a

mystery involving roman numerals and find the culprit of a theft! It was really challenging!

We have continued to read Tom’s Midnight Garden

which is all about a boy finding a secret garden at

midnight. It’s phenomenal! In our topic lesson, we have

been learning about the Native Americans and where

they lived which has been really interesting. Miss Stevens,

Congratulations Laura

Two weeks ago, Laura, Wilton class attended a football

trial for West Ham United Women where she participated

in some rigorous training sessions and played in a few

small sided games under the watchful eyes of the West

Ham training staff. I am pleased to report that this week,

Laura received a letter from West Ham offering her a

place in the team. Laura has worked hard in PE lessons,

at football club and at home to improve her skills in

football and it has really paid off. Practice really does

make perfect! What an amazing

achievement, we are all excited to see

what is in store for Laura in the future and

who knows… maybe we will see her

playing in a World Cup one day! Well

done Laura, we are incredibly proud of

you. Mr Felton PE Subject Lead Teacher

Some children in Year 6 visited Asheldham activity centre

this week. The children made me really proud whilst

representing the school. Team building, problem solving

and determination to succeed. Thank you Year 6.

Parents are reminded that it is their

responsibility to check for “visitors” in their

children’s hair and take appropriate action

to clear this as soon as possible. However,

due to the nature of the creature the NHS

also recommend checking everyone in the

house and start treating anyone who has

head lice on the same day. There's no need

to keep your child off school if they have

head lice. Lice and nits can be removed by

wet combing and the NHS suggest this as the

first method of treatment. Further information

on the treatment of nits and head lice can

be found on the NHS website.

Did you know it is Darlinghurst’s 50th year. We would

love to hear from past pupils and staff members from

our lovely school. If you know someone with a story to

tell please contact us.

[email protected]

Reminder – Please park considerably around

the community if you need to drive to the Academy.

Year 6 Leavers’ – The Year 6 leavers’ disco will take

place in the school hall Thursday 18th July from 5:30pm-

7:30pm. In addition, the Year 6 leavers’ assembly will

be held in the school hall Wednesday 24th July from

9:30am. All of Year 6 will be receiving gifts of a leavers

t’shirt and a leavers book with photos of their year

group.

At Darlinghurst we love reading and we want as many of you as possible to participate in a fun reading

challenge. Have a look at the list below and try to take on one of the 18 challenges. Send in some

evidence of completing the challenge (a picture, a drawing, a book review, report, something you have

learned or discovered or even something you have made as a result of the challenge) to

[email protected] or [email protected] and you could feature in News and Views

along with earning a prize. Happy reading!
