From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

Since ancient times, humanityhas struggled with concepts ofchaos and cosmos. Our approachas Jews has always been thatour God imposes order on thechaotic matter and energy bybuilding the universe. A parallelpower of divinity put humansin the Garden of the Earth toimpose moral structure onchaotic human life. The humanis the steward of the God’sCreation in Genesis, and theTorah is given to structure theideal society in Exodus. Withoutour religious insights andactions, the universe is physicalchaos and humanity is moralchaos.

This past year has thrust thishard truth back upon us likea storm surge over the break-waters, wave after wave. Theuniverse and life have a chaoticcomponent which we must facewith the confidence that Godhas given us the means andopportunity to tame the wildand create the good. Last fall, economic protests were alreadygrowing in France, SouthAmerica, Lebanon and more. The coronavirus burst on thescene, spreading across theglobe and striking at our regionlike a thief in the night.

Long standing racialunrest exploded in thewake of the killingof George Floyd inthe custody of theMinneapolis PoliceDepartment. Quarantine, shut down andconfusion reigned formonths in our country.

Through it all, B’nai Shalom hasbeen there for you and for ourmembers. Between me and ourvolunteers, we have madenearly a thousand phone callsinto our membership to see howpeople are and to respond toneeds for food, prescriptions, companionship and community. Our staff has pivoted to produceonline services, technologysupport and professionalreassessment of our financial, programming, educational andspiritual offerings over thesummer and in the year ahead.

Our services moved immediatelyonline in March. Over thesummer, when science told usthat the numbers were better,we were the only synagoguein the area of any denominationto safely reopen a hybrid modelof live, in-person minyancombined with online inclusionto engage our whole communityin Shabbat and weekdayservices when we did. Wecontinue to lead the way, butour work has only just begun.

I know that this hasbeen a year of chaosfor all of us, and thechallenges are not over.Yet, now more than everwe have proven that it isonly the synagogue thatcan provide “cosmos”in our lives. Only the

synagogue has volunteersreaching out to keep thiscommunity alive and well. And,quite frankly, we have beenmore active and more successfulthan any synagogue in theregion at keeping our memberssupported, in touch, active andinformed every step of the way.

Our annual Elul-Tishrei brochureis here. In it you will find the tipof the iceberg of our love anddedication to you and to all ofB’nai Shalom. Please stay safe, connected and optimistic inthese troubled times. Togetherwe will withstand the wavesof chaos and create purpose andmeaning in our shared lives.

L’Shanah Tovah Tikateivu. Mayyou and yours be inscribed onlyfor goodness, health andhappiness in the year ahead.

We’re not in Poland; it’s not the 15th centurywhen the Chelm stories were first told. But sometimes, we are all Chelmites.

We act foolishly. Our reasoning may be perfect, but our premisesare all wrong. Even with good will, we make huge mistakes. We’re fallible. What better preparation for Selichot than to

empathize with the charming fools of Chelm, and find some compassion for our own missteps.

On Saturday, September 12, at 9:00 pm, join B’nai Shalom’s Selichot Players—Carol and JerryGolub, Jim Hargrove, Sherry and Jeff Kirschenbaum, Bernie Reger,Seth Saltzman, Anne and Al Spring, and Rabbi Robert Tobin in a cameorole—for a sparkling reading of the Wise Men of Chelm, broughtto you on Zoom. Selichot services will follow the performance.

This program is FREE. Register by Tuesday, September 8, athttps://clc.bnaishalom.net/register.php. You will receive the Zoomlink in response.

RISINGTO THE OCCASION

HOW TO ELEVATE YOUR ONLINE HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE

Presented onTuesday, September 8, at 7:00 pm,by RABBI ROBERT TOBIN

We don’t need to ask “Why are these High Holidays different?” this year. The call ofthe shofar, the drama of all our Torah scrolls held for Kol Nidre—all will feel differentvia home speakers and screens.

Many of us will be “going to shul” online, missing the buzz and excitementof familiar faces. How will we feel the “kavanah” that draws us to the sanctuary?Join Rabbi Tobin for thoughtful conversation about easy but mindful ways thatwe can lift our online synagogue experience from “different” to beautiful.

Register by Thursday, September 3, at htt://clc.bnaishalom.net/register.php.You will receive the Zoom link in response. This program is FREE.

ORDERYOUR LULAV ANDETROG SETS FOR SUKKOT

During the existence of the Jerusalem Temple, Sukkot wasone of the three festivals where the Israelites were

commanded to perform a pilgrimage to the Temple. On eachday of the holiday of Sukkot it is mandatory to perform a wavingceremony with the four species, commonly refered to as a Lulavand Etrog set.
