Introduction:
HDPE stands for High‐Density Polyethylene. It is sometimes also referred to as polyethylene high‐density (PEHD) and sees high import volume into India given its various applications. It takes 1.75 kilograms of petroleum (in terms of energy and raw materials) to make one kilogram of HDPE. Known for its large strength to density ratio, HDPE finds applications in Raffia, Blow Moulding, Film, Pipes and Injection Moulding. HDPE is highly preferred as a sheathing material where it provides high resistance to water penetration. It is very hard, has low coefficient of friction, and is abrasion resistant. Hence, it is used in products and packaging such as milk jugs, detergent bottles, margarine tubs, garbage containers and water pipes. Total Import Volume: The total HDPE volume imported in the year 2013 January stands at around 34253 MTS. Imports have been received from around 22 countries with around 17 ports (sea/dry) in India being the destination points. Sea was the preferred mode of shipment. The largest shipment was received from Qatar with import volume standing at 14732 MTS which is 43.01 % of the total HDPE import volume. The second largest shipment was received from Saudi Arabia with the volume standing at 9153 MTS which is 26.72 % of the total HDPE imports. The third largest shipment was received from UAE with import volume standing at 2806 MTS which is 8.19 % of the total HDPE imports. It is important to note that the Middle East regionaccounts for 30269 MTS OR 88.37 % of the total HDPE imports. Exhibit 1: Snapshot on world‐wide HDPE import shipments

Thus the HDPE import volume for January 2013 (34253 MTS) shows an 11.30% increase as compared to January 2012 (30774 MTS) but shows a decline of 8.20% as compared to the HDPE import volume of December 2012 (37311 MTS). The trends for the year 2012 showed that demand was low for the months of January and February but picked up from March onwards as pre‐monsoon period begins. Lesser import levels in the month of January could be attributed to the several plant shutdowns planned in the GCC (since India imports 88.37% HDPE from the Middle East region) and price rises across all HDPE grades (given below in more detail) as compared to December 2012. Price rises were initiated by the HDPE producers in an effort to bolster their under pressure margins.

Average monthly prices were considered to calculate the M‐o‐M percentage changes. The average January prices saw an increase of around 2.76% to 3.32% for different HDPE grades as compared to December 2012 prices.

Let us also take a look below at the main destination ports for HDPE import shipments:
JNPT port, which is also India’s largest seaport received the largest HDPE shipments in India. The volume involved was22175 MTS which is 64.74 % of all HDPE import shipments. The second largest shipment was received by Chennai port, the volume being 2462 MTS which is 7.19 % of the total HDPE import shipments. Among the dry ports, the Tughlakabad ICD (the largest dry port in South Asia) recorded around 1063 MTS of HDPE imports which is around 3.10 % of the total HDPE imports into India. The chart shows the top 3 countries for HDPE import shipments at JNPT. The percentages denote HDPE import shipments at JNPT from the respective countries in proportion to the total volume of HDPE imported into India. Thus, it can be seen that shipments from Qatar (with 10140 MTS), Saudi Arabia (with 6100 MTS) and UAE (with 1470 MTS) toJNPT constitutes more than 50% of the total HDPE shipments into India.
Total Monetary Business:
The total HDPE import business in terms of monetary value stands approximately at around Rs. 270 crores.Corresponding monetary value for month of January 2012 stood at Rs. 221 crores while that of the preceding month stood at Rs. 290 crores. Please note that applicable duties at the shipment destinations have not been included in the discussed monetary figures. Exhibit 8: Snapshot on region‐wise monetary business

Disclaimer: This analysis makes use of Import data January 2013 procured from the Indian Customs on an “as is” basis. We have attempted to refine the raw database by removing records with sweep/reprocessed/off‐grade material shipments and records with non‐standard units. We have undertaken our best efforts in refining the database while formulating our statistics, however, customs data is known to include repetitions which is difficult to verify independently and may have inadvertently got included in this analysis. It is advisable that all figures be considered as approximate.
