Dear Parishioners,
Jesus must have been in a terrible place after hearing of the death of John the Baptist. Not only was John the forerunner of His mission, he was also his cousin, and they probably grew up together in their small family. Now the great prophet was killed by King Herod who did not want to be embarrassed in front of his friends after declaring he would do anything for his wife’s daughter. We would be filled with anger, hatred, even rage over such a haughty, cold, and calculating murderous king. But what does Jesus do? He goes off to a deserted place to pray and is quickly surrounded by people who need him. Instead of driving them away, His heart goes out to them and He heals their sick. He gives of Himself. Then, when it is late and He knows their human need for food, He asks the disciples to do the same — to give of themselves. Being very human and seeing the tremendous throng, they miss the example of self-giving from Jesus and question how they could ever take care of such a crowd. Once more Jesus gives of Himself. He multiplies the 5 loaves and 2 fish and shows God’s great generosity and abundance. He has a real heart for them even when His heart was breaking.
In our times of heartache, doubt, and even depression, let us look to be an example always of Jesus’ self-giving. As St. Francis of Assisi said so well in his beautiful prayer, “It is in giving that we receive.”

Campus Updates No Parking Zones have been painted on the curbs on the school side. One of the issues that arose during my Listening Sessions in the fall was the safety and security of our people, our buildings, and concern for disabled parishioners. Frequently cars would park along the curb on the school side, effectively blocking any emergency equipment (ambulances, fire trucks, police) that might need to get through. Additionally, some people would park directly in front of the ramps which people use for their walkers and wheelchairs or simply to avoid stepping up onto the curb. We took immediate action to try to correct this — but, because of COVID delays, we have just now marked off the No Parking Zones. Please honor them! We will give people a few weeks to become accustomed to the new No Parking Zones, but then we will strictly enforce it. Think of your fellow parishioners, and please be considerate.
We are actively pursuing a grant from the Knott Foundation to replace the cobblestones in front of the Little and Main Churches with smooth pathways to make it easier to walk for our more senior parishioners, women in high heels, and for wheeling caskets into and out of church for funerals. The grant also asks for funding for an automatic door opener on the school side for those who park in handicap zones.
Watch for other improvements as we move to implement requests from the Listening Sessions.
Congratulations to the Sacred Heart Confirmation Class Approximately half of our Sacred Heart Confirmation Class of 2020 received the Sacrament of Confirmation on July 25. Join us in congratulating these young men and women who chose to establish a deeper relationship with God and become closer to Jesus Christ. Please keep them in your prayers. Let us pray:
Come, Holy Spirit, and send your light upon these youth. Fill them with wisdom, understanding and the willpower that they need to be upright sisters and brothers, your beloved children. Guide them. Lead them. This prayer we offer to you, Spirit of wisdom and understanding. Amen.

Estimados feligreses,
Jesús debe haber estado en un lugar terrible después de enterarse de
la muerte de Juan el Bautista. No solo fue John el precursor de su misión, también fue su primo, y probablemente crecieron juntos en su pequeña familia. Ahora el gran profeta fue asesinado por el rey Herodes, que no quería avergonzarse delante de sus amigos después de declarar que haría cualquier cosa por la hija de su esposa. Estaríamos llenos de ira, odio, incluso rabia por un rey asesino tan arrogante, frío y calculador. ¿Pero qué hace Jesús? Se va a rezar a un lugar desierto y rápidamente lo rodean las personas que lo necesitan. En lugar de alejarlos, su corazón está con ellos y sana a sus enfermos. Él da de sí mismo. Luego, cuando es tarde y Él conoce su necesidad humana de comida, les pide a los discípulos que hagan lo mismo: que se den a sí mismos. Siendo muy humanos y viendo la tremenda multitud, se pierden el ejemplo de la entrega de Jesús y se preguntan cómo podrían cuidar de tal multitud. Una vez más Jesús da de sí mismo. COMO MANTENER LA FE
ENTIEMPOS DE CRISIS C.S. Lewis solía decir que: “El dolor y sufrimiento son el megáfono de Dios para un mundo sordo”. Y es que ciertamente cuando nos va mal, es cuando comúnmente vamos más rapidito a buscar a Dios. Sin embargo, cuando entramos en una crisis profunda, nuestro marco de referencia comienza a
bombardearnos con argumentos y referencias de lo que sabemos por experiencias o hemos aprendido de otros. Esto nos puede paralizar o impulsarnos hacia la frustración, depresión —y en el caso de la fe— puede llevarnos a dejar la fe por completo. En términos bíblicos, nos puede llevar a la apostasía. Apostasía (del griego), significa “un desafío de un sistema establecido o autoridad; una rebelión; un abandono o abuso de fe”. En el mundo del primer siglo, la apostasía era un término técnico para la revuelta política o deserción. Hay dos tipos principales:
1. Alejándose de las doctrinas claves y verdaderas de la Biblia a las enseñanzas heréticas que proclaman ser la doctrina cristiana “real” (1 Timoteo 4: 1).
2. Una renuncia completa a la fe cristiana, que resulta en un abandono completo de Cristo. (Hebreos 10: 26-27).1
Por esta razón, es imperativo que estemos capacitados para lidiar con las crisis. Ciertamente no podremos predecir la crisis que nos espera en el futuro. Sin embargo,es necesario estar listos por nosotros mismos y por aquellos a quienes Dios nos dio el privilegio de discipular. Quizás en tu mente, ahora mismo buscas cómo resolverías una crisis con el fin de no darle las espaldas a Cristo. Es mi intención poder proveerles una herramienta poderosa que nos ayudará a atravesar la crisis en el futuro.
Ante este reto, debemos orar de corazón lo que Pablo escribió en Efesios 6: 13-17
Por lo tanto, pónganse toda la armadura de Dios, para que cuando llegue el día malo puedan resistir hasta el fin con firmeza. Manténganse firmes, ceñidos con el cinturón de la verdad, protegidos por la coraza de justicia, y calzados con la disposición de proclamar el evangelio de la paz. Además de todo esto, tomen el escudo de la fe, con el cual pueden apagar todas las flechas encendidas del maligno. Tomen el casco de la salvación y la espada del Espíritu, que es la palabra de Dios.

Bautizos: Se celebran cada segundo sábado del mes (excepto durante la cuaresma). Los padres y los padrinos requieren asistir a una clase de preparación que se realiza el tercer domingo de cada mes y los padrinos deben haber recibido todos los sacramentos de iniciación cristiana (Bautizo, Confirmación y Eucaristía). Favor llamar a la oficina para mayor información. Matrimonio: Las parejas que están planeando en casarse deben contactar el sacerdote o el diacono por lo menos seis meses antes de la fecha planeada para este sacramento. Religious Education
Registration Update for 2020-2021 Faith formation classes for children begin on
September 13! After receiving much feedback and hearing the preferences of parents and catechists, we have decided to begin the new year with a weekly online format for Religious Education classes. Our catechists will present the lessons at your child’s age level. As the year goes along, hopefully the pandemic situation will improve and we will be able to return safely to the classrooms for religion classes.
Registration information can be found this week at www.shgparish.org/children. Please register your children soon to help us prepare materials and lessons for the fall. If you are new to our faith formation program, we welcome your children as we strive to know and grow closer to our God!

Sacred Heart Fall Soccer Registration is open for the upcoming Sacred Heart 2020 Fall Soccer season. We offer single-sex Travel programs and co-ed Non-Travel programs for children ages 4-18. We are always searching for great people who want to play a part in forming the ever-developing minds of our youth. Training can be provided!
Our programs are focused on learning while having fun in a competitive environment. Additionally, your volunteer time may count toward volunteer hours for the school. When do children prepare for the sacraments? Parish children are prepared for the sacraments of reconciliation and Eucharist during the 2nd grade year of their faith formation program (Religious Education classes or Catholic school). Children must attend a program in both 1st and 2nd grade in order to be fully ready to receive these sacraments. A separate program, called RCIC, is available for children in grade 3 or higher with no previous faith formation who have not yet celebrated these sacraments or who perhaps have not yet been baptized. Parents have a very important role in this process, since much of the preparation is done at home with their children.

Social Justice and Outreach
“School Choice Now” Act COVID-19 has contributed to the permanent closure of 138 Catholic schools across 23 states. Additionally, internal surveys show ten percent of Catholic schools are now uncertain if they can open their doors this fall. That means as many as 500 or more Catholic schools could be in jeopardy.
Please ask our U.S. Senators to include additional relief for Catholic schools in the emergency relief package currently being negotiated. As the Senate prepares its next COVID relief bill, please ask that it include immediate assistance to families through federally-funded scholarships.
The Alexander-Scott “School Choice Now Act” provides one-time, emergency
funding for scholarship-granting organizations in each state and provides permanent dollar-for-dollar federal tax credits for contributions to scholarship granting organizations. Catholic schools urgently need help in this time of uncertainty. Please contact your Senators today! Click here to take action!

Decline in the Quality of Human Life and Breakdown of Society: Human beings, too, are creatures of this world, enjoying a right to life and happiness, and endowed with unique dignity. So we cannot fail to consider the effects on people’s lives of environmental deterioration, current models of development, and the throwaway culture. The social dimensions of global change include the effects of technological innovations on employment, social exclusion, an inequitable distribution and consumption of energy and other services, social breakdown, increased violence, and a rise in new forms of social aggression, drug trafficking, growing drug use by young people, and the loss of identity. These are signs that the growth of the past two centuries has not always led to an integral development and an improvement in the quality of life. (LS #44, 46)

Sacramental Ministry
Baptisms Third Saturdays at noon and within a weekend Mass (in normal times). No baptisms during Lent. Parents are required to attend a preparation class (offered monthly). Contact the Religious Education Office for more details and to arrange for Baptism.
Reconciliation Confessions are heard on Saturdays from 3:00 – 4:00 PM (5:30 – 6:45 PM in Spanish) in the Main Church and by appointment. Parish Reconciliation Services are held during Advent and Lent.
Marriage Couples planning to be married should contact a priest or deacon at least six months before the anticipated date and must take a marriage preparation course. Do not set a date until you have met with the priest or deacon.
Communion to the Sick In normal times:
For the hospitalized or homebound who are unable to attend Mass and wish to receive Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office. Mass is celebrated at FutureCare Cherrywood Nursing Home on the 2nd Wednesday at 10:30 AM.

Initiation of Adults “Thirsting for God?” Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?
Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet received Confirmation and Communion? They may be thirsting, too! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a place to ask questions and seek understanding.

to June) to service and spirituality with the Ignatian Volunteer
Corps (IVC). There is no shortage of need in the Baltimore region — and all skills,
lovingly offered, can be matched to the great work of one of IVC’s over 30 nonprofit
partner agencies! During COVID-19, there are numerous “work from home” options
for service. Volunteers commit to 1 or 2 days of service per week and meet monthly in
community — virtually for now — for spiritual reflection in the Ignatian tradition. Join
the IVC Service Corps! Make a difference in your retirement!
The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) provides men and women, most age 50 or better,
opportunities to serve others and transform lives. IVC, in partnership with nonprofit
organizations throughout the Baltimore metro area, provides Ignatian Volunteers with
substantive work — to serve individuals and families seeking to overcome the challenges

We received 40+ auditions and were quite excited about possibly casting and staging this amazing show. Unfortunately, with restrictions still in place for parts of the state and for counties within the state and additional restrictions from the Archdiocese of Baltimore, we were very concerned about keeping everyone safe both on and off stage.
This type of decision is not easy. We stayed in the discussion as long as possible, hoping to be light at the end of this pandemic for all our creative friends and the theatrical outlet to all those quarantined during this time. We will return for the Summer of 2021, and I ask you to stay connected as we announce our 2nd Annual Christmas Event. We would love to have you join us for this event during the holiday season.

Archbishop Lori: How Church teaching can help explain why ‘Black Lives Matter’ This week an article by Archbishop Lori was published in America Magazine. Below are a few excerpts. The full article can be read by clicking here.
The question before us as Catholics is this: Is there a truth reflected in these words that transcends partisan platforms and ideological constructs, a truth that indeed resonates with the Gospel values that flow from our faith? The words “Black Lives Matter” ought to remind us that every Black person is made in God’s image and is endowed with inviolable dignity, from the moment of conception until natural death. But why single out Black people? Why not be content just to say that everyone is God’s handiwork? First, in saying “Black Lives Matter,” let us remember that we are part of a church whose past is stained by its participation in slavery and other forms of racism. Let us also remember that we live in a country where slavery was once the law of the land in both local statutes and the Constitution.
The words “Black Lives Matter” should turn our attention not only to the grave injustices and indignities suffered throughout the Black community but especially to the smallest and most fragile Black lives whose situations are often made more perilous by poverty, unemployment, substandard schools, inadequate housing, and poor health care. We cannot say we are fully “pro-life” if we routinely overlook the conditions in which far too many people of color live.
It is in the home where young people first learn that their lives matter. It is in the home where our children — all of our children — must learn too that Black Lives Matter.
With the church’s social teaching as our guide, let us, as a Catholic community, build bridges of understanding so that we can say in wisdom, truth and love, that “Black Lives Matter.” (Archbishop Lori)
