News from Yorkshire & the Humber Leadership Academy

“Heads Up” - September 2015

WelcomeAndrea Overton

Deputy Head of Leadership & Organisation DevelopmentYorkshire & the Humber Leadership Academy

While Kathryn is away on her summer holiday I offer you a warm welcome to our September Heads Up.  As work continues in the background in preparation for the Academy move to Health Education England it is very much ‘business as usual’ for our leadership and OD work in Yorkshire and the Humber with plenty coming up over the next few months. If you are planning on attending one of our Autumn/Winter events or activities, delegates will find it easier to book places and keep track of programmes and events as our CRM system LinkedUP will be open for all bookings from the start of October.  It is not long now until nominations for the Leadership Recognition Awards close; the new extended deadline is end of 13th September. We would love to see a final push for nominations, particularly for Board of the Year and Inclusive Leader. Thank you to everyone that has taken time to nominate colleagues so far and thank you also to judges to have agreed to shortlist nominees and take part on the day – make sure you have 25th November in your diary for the Awards event.

Our recent online survey into talent management had a good response and has provided some helpful insights already. Around 95% of participants agreed to take part in a follow-up interview which will take place over September before the final steps of reporting back on findings and using the data to shape our work together for the next 12-18 months.

Also on talent - this week we contacted HR Directors, leadership leads and a number of other networks inviting expressions of interest from individuals wanting to collaborate with us on delivering a number of our local leadership priorities via a sponsored assignment. We think this way of working offers exciting opportunities for individual emerging leaders and mutual benefits for all concerned. You can find out more from Amanda Allen and on our website.

Finally, following discussion at the July Regional Leadership Council meeting we have asked Juliet Brown from Mirabelle Associates to review the governance and leadership of our work at a regional level. Thank you if you have agreed to take part and be interviewed by Juliet. Please contact Kathryn if you want to know more about this review, if you want to air your views about how we are governed or if you want to join the Regional Leadership Council.

Regional Leadership Recognition Awards

The deadline to nominate your staff and colleagues for a Regional Leadership Recognition Award is fast approaching. Nominations must be received via the Awards website by the end of 13th September to be eligible for shortlisting. Talent Management Update

The recent ‘Find out Fast’ talent management survey has completed the first stage with an online survey. We are now contacting people for a follow up interview. 30 provider organisations and four commissioning organisations responded, and 85% of individual respondents had senior operational or executive director level responsibility for talent management.

Headlines from the survey include:

• Only 20% said they had a TM strategy in place and 14% said it was embedded within improving organisational performance and developing leadership capability. This is understandable as none of the Boards of organisations taking part in this survey ask for Return on Investment (ROI) reports for talent management.

• Graduate level roles: 70% either have to grow their own graduate talent, struggle to recruit quality applicants or have vacancies. Additionally, 38% expect to see an increase in graduate recruitment in the next 2 years. Despite this challenging market, 78% of respondents do not have a leadership development pathway in place for graduates. Unsurprisingly,  81%  think there is value in a regional approach to graduate talent.

• Widening participation – organisations are putting most effort into widening participation at Bands 1-4 (75%),compared to 46% for Bands 5-7 and 38% at Bands 8a+

Innov8 Diversity and Inclusion Update

AccelerateThe  4th cohort of our trailblazing Innov8  inclusive leadership programme will end in November and have a celebration, sharing of learning, impact and outcomes event on 3rd December. Each year line managers, sponsors and senior leaders are invited to join the celebration and hear for themselves the benefits to individuals, teams and service users and patients. This year we are asking stakeholders to attend to see for themselves if this is a programme they wish to support longer-term. For further information, contact Deb Singleton . Sponsored assignmentsTo help with our regional work to support inclusive talent management and leadership diversity we are offering a number of ‘sponsored assignments’ supported directly, via a service level agreement or (for staff working part-time) and option to quote as an independent provider. This is about providing additional resource but more importantly it is about bring in different experience, insights and skills to benefit our region as a whole. See the form here for further information or contact Amanda Allen .

Shadow Board Pilot SchemeFour Trusts have expressed a significant interest in adopting the programme and the Inspiring Leaders Network team are currently progressing the conversations. Delivery is due to begin in the Autumn and it will see a minimum of 30 staff from across the region gain access to a unique executive education and development opportunity. Contact Tom Lindley for further information.

i-Lead AllianceFuture i-Lead network sessions will include a look at widening participation in starter rolesand early clinical and managerial leaders, implications of generational diversity in the workplace, a caucus of Innov8 funded delegates to the first ever Stonewall employer conference in Leeds. We are producing a round up report of progress, learning and outcomes so far from programmes and projects supported by the Innov8 Charter and Fund. For further information, contact Deb Singleton .

New Coaching Programmes

Manager as Coach – Train the Trainer This is a train the trainer approach to enable organisations to develop and sustain the use of coaching approaches in everyday interactions. The care sector is challenged to deliver patient centred care in a climate of austerity and increasing complexity as population needs and organisational responses evolve. Coaching skills and approaches have an increasingly prominent role in tapping the immense potential of the public sector workforce as well as creating resilient, compassionate and responsive cultures capable of sustained delivery.

The Manager as Coach Programme The programme focuses on the use of practical skills and approaches to bring a coaching element to everyday conversations from one to one meetings, team meetings and ‘in the moment’ problem solving. The programme itself is modular allowing organisations and trainers to respond to specific needs. Participants will develop credible approaches to;• Establishing and managing the boundaries for coaching conversations• Using their authority, knowledge and expertise whilst raising awareness and ownership in others• Structuring and managing conversations that clarify goals and mobilise potential through focussed action and

learning• Supporting performance development and associated behaviour change• Evaluating the impact of coaching on performanceSee the flyer here for further details on both programmes and register your interest with Amanda Allen.

Mentoring for Leadership: Train the Trainer

Mentoring is about making your experience and learning available to another to help them address important knowing and doing gaps. This is a departure from some traditional perhaps paternalistic views of mentorship. Regionally and nationally the demand for mentoring capability is increasing along with the diversity of approaches employed to deal with increasingly complex challenges. In a rapidly changing system our ability to learn and adapt is crucial. This is a train the trainer programme developed by the Thames Valley and Wessex Leadership Academy and delivered in Yorkshire and the Humber for organisations wishing to develop mentoring capability. Participants should be facilitators or experienced coaches / mentors who are ready to take on a trainer role. Participants must be supported by an organisational commitment and plan to deploy training soon after completion of the programme. Dates for the programme are 15 th & 16th October, and 30th November (attendance at all three is required).  By the end of this programme participants will have:• The skills, knowledge and materials to deliver the 2 day Mentoring for Leadership programme• Awareness of common participants’ concerns, issues and how to address them• Support from a group of other trainers in their area to draw on for support and supervision• Reinforced their own mentoring practice by developing and supporting new mentors

We are offering a Webex 8th September to give further details aboutthe programme. Contact Amanda Allen to express your interest forthe Webex and the programme; see the flyer here for more information, and click on the image to the right watch the video.

OD Network Event

Planning work has been underway for the relaunch of the regional OD Network and the first event of the refreshed network will take place on Monday 28th September in Leeds.  The intended audience is OD practitioners within organisations and others who are engaged in developing their organisations.

The theme of the event is to explore the relationship, advantages and disadvantages between Internal and External OD consultancy.  Other questions we will explore include: • The various dimensions of OD (using findings from the national OD Capability report)

• The roles we adopt as OD practitioners

• How we enact OD in practice (our deliberate & intentional practice)

• What does OD consultancy mean in our individual contexts We hope to use this event as a platform to reinvigorate the network as a vibrant space for practitioners to share good practice, learn together and build capability and capacity across the region so that we might eventually share and deploy that capability in more creative and effective ways.

If there is someone in your organisation who you believe might be interested to find out more please put them in touch with either Deb Singleton or Kathryn Winterburn.

Co-Creation Network Update

The Co-Creation Network continues to grow, with 22 new members joining the website in August and the set up of three new Communities of Practice, Innovation, Perinatal Mental Health Network and Yorkshire and Humber Falls Prevention. These CoPs are in the 'Under Construction' phase; meaning facilitators are in the process of getting their invitations out to core members, defining their domains and building up their knowledge base.

Co-Creation Network members Angela Green and Liz Watson will also host an event 2nd November on behalf of ‘The Spark’. This is an event created by Health & Social Care Voices and Frameworks 4 Change, hosted by local catalysts for change and part of a national series. In Leeds, The Sparkwill explore the resurgence of communities of caring, theneed for co-creation and spaces needed for emergence ofcollective knowledge. Book your free ticket here for 2nd
