Each year, doctors Judd and Sarah

Sherman gift a member of the community

with a new smile.

Over the years, the Shermans have

dedicated their time and

resources to completely

restoring someone’s smile

— for free.

“Anywhere from

Orthodontics to implants to

dentures,” they said. “This is

just one of the ways we can

give back to the community

and the amazing people that

live here.”

Elizabeth Poeschel was

the 2016-17 winner of the

Ultimate Smile Makeover.

You may recognize her

as a friendly face from

the Walmart pharmacy.

Elizabeth’s transformation

began December of 2016 and has now

completed her treatment today.

Elizabeth has always been a naturally

happy person, and she loves to smile. Before

the Ultimate Smile Makeover it was the

closed mouth smile.

She always wanted to repair her smile,

however she was unable to financially because she always puts her family first.

At one point she started saving money

to get dentures. At the beginning of 2016

her husband was in an accident and the

savings she had for a new smile were used

to support her family. That was around the

time when Elizabeth and her family heard

about the contest, she thought it was too

good to be true, “They already know who

they’re going to pick, I have never been seen

there,” Elizabeth said.

Her parents wrote letters, her children

wrote letters, even her husband in full

support wrote a letter expressing how much

she deserved a life changing smile.

Now not only does

she have a picture perfect

smile, but her life has been

changed as well. ”Now I can

smile constantly,” she said.

To enter we ask that

you write in a letter to our

office explaining why you or someone you know is in

need of a new smile. The

more detail the better!

Todays’ Dental

understands that there

are a lot of situations that

prevent patients from

seeking treatment. Whether

it be financial, emotional, or just life events that keep

someone from treatment, this could be a

great opportunity for you or someone you

know to get the work they deserve. This

contest is for everyone. Whether you need

a total smile makeover, crowns, implants,

Periodontics, Botox, Juvederm — whatever

you need, we will take care of you. If you

win our Ultimate Smile Makeover, all your

dental treatment will be paid for.

Rules: All letters should be sent with

a clear picture of the person’s smile. Send

letters and photos by email, mail or by

stopping by the office.DEADLINE: April 31,2019

Like clockwork, Kenny Callahan,

regional manager of Anytime Fitness, sees

people dropping out of his gym by the

time February comes around each year.

“Every gym has equipment, and

everybody is super motivated at the new

year, but every single year we see people

quitting when February hits.”

But how can people take steps to stay

on the right path to a healthy life without

giving up?

Cynthia Wilson, D.O., is a doctor at

Yelm Family Medicine who believes that

people drop health plans because they do

too much, too fast.

“Everybody has their vice, and they

know what that is,” Wilson said. “If soda is

a really big thing for you, then maybe you

only have soda on Friday, or you only have

soda when you are out with your social

group. So if you don’t go cold turkey and

you limit it to an amount that’s not going

to be harmful longterm, that’s a good goal

to have.”

She also said that her patients find the

most success when they exercise daily.

However, Callahan suggests that the

change toward healthy moving is best done

with consistency, rather than quantity.

“A lot of people think that they need

to work out five days a week to see the changes that they want to, when in all

reality, it’s consistency,” Callahan said.

“You can come in two or three times a

week as long as you have the right program

to stick to.”

Samantha Root, personal trainer and

member experience manager at Anytime

Fitness said that a consistent workout and

a healthy meal plan will only go as far as a

person’s motivation.

She explained that if a person doesn’t

ask themselves the real reason why they

want to get healthy, they will not have the

honesty and motivation needed to make

lasting change.

“Wanting to be able to run around

and play with your daughter at the park

will keep you going a whole heck of a

lot longer than falling off the wagon for

your donut will,” Root said, adding that

a good workout for sustainability would

be to hit all the muscle movements and

groups using one’s own bodyweight for

the exercise.

“I am very more on the psychological

side of things,” Callahan said. “I believe

that working out is a piece of the pie,

but more importantly, it’s to identify

what our motivations are and also, more

importantly, the things that have held us

back in the past.”

Carlee Hayes, RDN, CD, registered

dietitian nutritionist for ATI Physical

Therapy, suggested that the thing holding

us back from executing a good health plan

is her patients’ tendency to bite off more

than they can chew.

“A big lifestyle change can be

overwhelming, so I often tell my patients

to set short-term goals that are realistic

and attainable,” Hayes said. “For example,

if your goal is to lose 50 pounds, don’t

write that down as your goal. That can be

discouraging and overwhelming. Instead,

focus on action items like adding two

servings of vegetables per day, adding

an exercise class into your routine every

week, etc.”

Hayes said she wants to see her patients

celebrate the small successes when they

achieve them to keep themselves motivated

and engaged.

“Small changes, when set into motion

and made part of your routine, lead to big

results.” Hayes said.

Both Callahan and Hayes agreed that

having an accountability partner is near

essential to lasting change. This could be

a spouse, loved one, friend or personal

trainer. All that matters is that someone is

there to call a person out on the carpet for

abandoning a health plan.

All of this is about sustainability, and

it takes a hard look at oneself to figure out why things haven’t been sustainable in the

past, Callahan said.

“A lot of people have had success with

losing weight, but we’re talking about

sustainability,” he said. “A lot of people

can lose the weight, but it’s hard to stick to

it for some reason. In my experience, that’s

because of common habits in our life that

come back in eventually. I would focus in

on asking yourself: ‘Why have I not been

able to be successful in the past?’ That’s

a great place to start, and that’s what we

do here at Anytime Fitness. We start from

that approach.”

As far as nutrition goes, Hayes said that

everything is acceptable in moderation

and that eating plans should be specific to each patient. She said there’s no right way

to eat, but she would suggest making half

of each plate fruits and vegetables.

“Your body takes the nutrients from

the foods you eat and creates the cells

that make your body,” Hayes said. “Quite

literally, you are what you eat. Good

nutrition can positively affect your energy

level throughout the day as well as quality

of sleep, mood and athletic performance.

Our food is our fuel. That being said, food

is just one piece of the puzzle. Always

look at health with all components in mind

— sleep, stress, nutrition, mental health,

movement, etc.

Wilson agreed that there are other

factors that need to be addressed to ensure

a healthy body. To start, most insurance

companies allow a patient one free

physical check-up a year. Since check-ups

can help a person know exactly where their

health is at — for good or for bad — they

can often be a spurring-off point to lasting

change. However, like Hayes said, Wilson

cautioned that if certain health conditions

are left unchecked, change can be futile.

“If you are not sleeping well, if you

have anxiety, depression or a mood

disorder — those things need to be treated

as well,” Wilson said. “When you’re under

a lot of stress because of not sleeping or

if you’re too anxious or depressed, it’s

going to cause your hormones to be off to

where you can’t lose weight. You’re body

is in survival mode and until you get that

stress to go away you’re going to have a

very hard time losing weight, even with

the best exercise and best diet.”

Assuming that other health problems

are being treated appropriately, Hayes said

that healthy change is all in the small stuff.

“When in doubt, take a step back from

the bigger picture and look at a smaller

piece,” she said. “Ask yourself, ‘What are

three small things I can do to positively

affect my health today?’”

From skin care to body care, hair care

to makeup, Bliss can do that with Aveda.

Bliss has a beautiful, educational

platform that helps each of its staff continue

growing personally and professionally.

Kangiser said she is about building a

career path and creating a blissful salon/spa

experience, not just a haircut, facial, wax or

The salon’s name was inspired by a

Hershey’s chocolate candy commercial,

and it used to have this candy at the front

desk from the time it opened until the

product was discontinued.

“So many people missed the sweet

treat, that we replaced it with Hershey’s

Kisses,” Kangiser said. “You can still enjoy

a piece from the candy jar at the desk

today.”

Acupuncture

CenterBlue Waters Acupuncture Center in

Yelm’s motto is “At Blue Waters your health becomes crystal clear.”

Yelm acupuncturist Dr. Michael Carruth, specializing in natural healing through Chinese medicine, wants to know if you’re aching, in chronic pain or suffering in some way. If that’s the case, he can make you feel better by sticking needles into your skin.

Carruth has owned Blue Waters Acupuncture Center in Yelm since August of 2010. Carruth, who offers a free 30-minute consultation to anyone interested in learning more about acupuncture.

Acupuncture promotes the natural healing of the body. It is a drug-free, holistic approach that provides pain relief, which involves inserting small, whisker-like needles into specific points along the meridians of the body that pertain to a specific ailment.

Carruth said most appointments last 20-25 minutes with little to no pain. When he inserts the needles, Carruth said that, depending on the ailment, he can help cure pain in three ways: stick a needle in the area, near the area or at a distant area.

“What I like about acupuncture when using needles, you’re putting it into the meridian system within the body, and working with a person’s own energy to achieve balance and harmony,” Carruth said. “When we put the needles in, it depends on the person and what someone needs. Some may feel a dull ache, buzzing or nothing at all.”

As a medical doctor and licensed acupuncturist, Carruth said he knows modern medicine, but acupuncture can also help patients understand how traditional Chinese medicine can improve their health. According to a 2007 study by the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine that looked at 21,000 visits, Carruth said regardless of what a

person was complaining of, by five visits 70 percent had a significant response.

Carruth specializes in many areas such as allergies, neck pain, migraines, stress, depression and dental pain.

Carruth said he believes different body systems are intimately related to each other.

“I believe that our thinking profoundly affects our health, not only on a daily basis, but especially in the long term,” he said. “During my study of Chinese medicine, I had an ‘Aha’ moment when I learned that Chinese medicine closely paralleled my own philosophy.”

Wilcox

Family FarmsWilcox Family Farms is a fourth-

generation business started in 1909 by Judson and Elizabeth

Wilcox at Harts Lake. Today it

features certified organic produce, and can be purchased right here in the Yelm Safeway.

It specialize in all types of eggs; cage free, free range, organic and pasture raised. Wilcox also supplies most of the local colleges with foodservice items like peeled hardboiled eggs or pasteurized liquid eggs for breakfast or restaurants.

Being family owned and operated for so long is a source of pride for the Wilcox Family. The fourth generation, with the help of the fifth generation, strive for the best quality around and take extra measures to insure that they follow through on quality assurance programs.

“As a transition farm we are committed to converting our chickens to 100 percent organic and cage free,” according to the company’s website. “We believe in providing you, our customer, with fresh organic, cage free, omega-3 eggs from hens that are Food Alliance-certified, Certified Humane, Salmon Safe and certified organic by Oregon Tilth. As in the beginning, the family’s commitment to the environment,

animals, and employees still is strong today.”

The farm is located just a few miles southwest of Yelm. Wilcox Family Farms has become one of the largest egg producers in the Pacific Northwest, with upward of $70 million in annual sales. Some 1.2 million chickens roam the ranch and every day they lay 1.2 million eggs.

“Once they start laying eggs, they don’t slow down. We never have an off season,” says Brent Wilcox, a fourth-generation family member who runs the company with his brother, Andy, and his cousin, Chris.

Wilcox Farms organic eggs come from its flocks of organically raised and grown hens. Wilcox sources feed from its own farm and other local farmers. The company mills the feed, in their own certified organic feed mill using the finest organic mixture of corn, peas, alfalfa, wheat, flax and soy. The hens live a cage-free lifestyle, enjoying access to the outdoors. The chickens are naturally cared for and never given any hormones or antibiotics.

Two common questions we get from clients are, “I didn’t know you were in Yelm,” and “how long have you been in business?”

Source Float & Spa at Wellspring has been in business from 1 - 4 years. The floatation center has been operating for four years, but the Japanese soaking tub is less than one year old. The business was built in sections as the individual ‘wellness’ concepts were developed.

Source Float & Spa mostly serves the Yelm, McKenna, Rainier, Lacey and Olympia communities. However, we have clients from south of Portland to north of Seattle. Some of the services we offer are extremely unique. For instance, the Lucia Light No. 3 experience. There are less than 25 of these units in the entire United States, and only two of these are in Washington state. The other unique type of service is a two-person Japanese soaking tub in a private suite that also includes a massage chair, foot massager and rainbow shower with jets. It is a five-star experience, and so far, all of the reviews have been five stars.

And although Floatation Therapy is gaining wide acceptance, the closest floatation center to us is in Olympia. And as an interesting side note, both Stephen Curry, of the Golden State Warriors, and the Seattle Seahawks use floatation therapy for relaxation and quick recovery after games.

Source Float & Spa at Wellspring includes two custom built floatation cabins, large enough for most people to stand up, a full-spectrum, infrared sauna, the Lucia Light experience, a traditional European sauna, and the W Suite that includes the Japanese soaking tub.

The mission of Source Float & Spa is to give everyone who comes to our center an experience of personal well-being. This is accomplished by the stress-reducing services of our saunas

and our soaking tub, the rejuvenation of the floatation session, and the exhilaration of the Lucia Light experience.

What makes Source, Float & Spa unique is it’s services are not easily found outside the Yelm – Olympia communities. The business is new and stunningly appointed. You feel as if you are in a high-end Seattle

spa. The good news is that you are only paying rural prices.

Source Float & Spa has very reasonable prices. In addition, we constantly have added value promotions. For example, the first introductory floatation session is $45, and if you come back within two weeks, the next session is $30. As a New Year Special, we are offering 35 percent discount on any of our services if your second visit is within two weeks. We also have great prices if you

purchase multiple sessions. Our best prices on any of our services

is called a Lifestyle Program. In this program you commit to 1, 2 or 4 sessions each month. These best-price sessions can be given to friends or family, roll over if you do not use them within the month, and if you accrue two months’ worth of sessions, you are not billed again until you have used the accrued sessions. Many doctors and healthcare professionals are now saying that 95 percent of all diseases can be eliminated with a lifestyle change.

The staff is committed to maintaining our core values: Gratitude – we wake

up every morning remembering that we live a blessed life and it is obvious in our attitude; Service – we honor and serve everyone who comes to Wellspring; authenticity – we are great examples of consistent participation in the available services we offer.

Wellspring is a 12,000 sq. foot Wellness Center at the west end of Yelm past the High School on the right (9144 Burnett Road) as you are going toward Lacey. Included at Wellspring are 8 individual business owners in the wellness field that also includes a top-tier restaurant.
