The signs and symptoms of the swine flu
are similar to the regular flu. These are
fever, coughing, sore throat, body aches,
headaches, chills and fatigue. Some
people have reported diarrhea and
vomiting. Having these symptoms this
does not necessarily mean that the
person has the swine flu. It may be a
case of regular seasonal flu. One
important consideration is knowing if the
person has been in the last 7 days in any
of the countries or states were there are
confirmed cases of the flu.
How does the swine flu spread? How does the swine flu spread? How does the swine flu spread? How does the swine flu spread?
The way this swine flu spreads is similar
to the way seasonal flu spreads. Flu
viruses are spread mainly from person to
person through coughing or sneezing of
people with the flu. Sometimes people
may become infected by touching
something with the flu virus and then
touching their mouths, eyes or nose. The
swine flu virus can not spread by food.

The world is living today with an
uncertainty related to public health. As
days go by we hear about the progress
of the Swine Flu now referred as
Influenza H1N1. With the improvement
of our transportation systems, we are
witnessing how this disease progresses
rapidly from one country to another
affecting hundreds of people and
putting in risk many others. One of the
question most of us are concerned with
is what to do? The first, and most
important thing is know what is really
happening. Keeping in touch with what
health officials are saying is the best
alternative right now.
What is the Swine Flu and why now is What is the Swine Flu and why now is What is the Swine Flu and why now is What is the Swine Flu and why now is

The swine flu is a respiratory disease
that affects pigs and is caused by a
Type A influenza virus. Cases of human
infection with this virus have been
reported in the past but the infection
was not likely to spread from one
person to another. from human to
human was very limited. The cases we
are now seeing is different because the
virus has been able to adapt and be
very contagious. That is why now the
CDC has determined that this swine flu
Type A H1N1 is very contagious from
human to human.

were there are confirmed cases of
the flu, you should seek medical
evaluation as soon as possible.
The Department of Health of
Puerto Rico has identified 106
Health Centers around the island
to be the ones to officially verify
any suspicious case. Do not to
visit the emergency rooms. Visiting
emergency rooms may put at risk
many other people including

Yes, there are antiviral drugs that
can help fight the infection by
keeping the flu virus from
reproducing in your body. This
allows your body to fight the
disease and prevent
complications than can cause
death. Until now, there is no
vaccination available against this
virus. Most people can get better
without the antiviral drugs.
Medical interventions would be
directed to keep the patient
hydrated and treat the symptoms
related to the flu.

If we would count every song
and every poem that refers to
our heart it would be a difficult
task to complete. For us , the
heart is symbol of love and the
home of our feelings and
emotions. We give all our heart
to a loved one and we get
heart broken when we are
betrayed. But do we really care
for our heart?
Our heart in one of the vital
organs we talk a lot about but,
for many people, is the most
ignored. This is proven to be
true when you consider that
the first cause of death in the
United States and Puerto Rico
are cardiovascular disease.
One of the health risk factor
associated to cardiovascular
disease is high blood pressure.
(blood pressure 140/90 mg/
dL or higher). Keeping your
blood pressure under control
will help to keep your heart
healthy. It is not enough to
romanticize your heart, you
have to care of it. Adopting a
healthy lifestyles will help keep
your heart beating of joy and
happiness.

• Verify your blood pressure
level frequently
• Exercise
• Use moderation when
eating fat and sodium
