Examples of Classes for Consumers:

• Healthier Choices, Healthier YOUStanford University’s Chronic Disease Self Management Programis designed for individuals and their caregivers who are dealingwith chronic conditions. The 6 week, 2-1/2 hour classes covertechniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, painand isolation. The program teaches exercise for maintaining andimproving strength, flexibility, and endurance. The program alsoenforces appropriate use of medications and introduces tools forcommunicating effectively with family, friends, and health pro-fessionals. Other subjects covered include nutrition education,decision making, and how to evaluate new treatments.

• Eat Better, Move MoreThe 12-week program consists of mini-talkson nutrition and walking, which emphasizethe benefits of eating more fruits and vegeta-bles, the relationship of dairy foods with bonehealth, the importance of dietary fiber, andsensible portion sizes. The Program uses stepcounters to encourage older adults to takemore steps each day. Other topics include stretching, movement,walking in all weather, and healthy weight.

• Tai ChiThe movements of Tai Chi help seniors reduce stress, increase balanceand flexibility. Participants learn relaxation to improve their overallmind, body and spirit through a series of slow continuous movements.This program is designed for people at all levels of mobility and can beperformed standing or sitting.

OHAI offers education for seniors, caregivers and healthcare professionals;

many are evidence based. Through classes and online resources, our statewide

network of experts is available to assist Oklahomans in maintaining their health

as they age. Our healthcare and aging expertise, informative workshops and

professional training will enable you to give back to those who have given so

much. By educating providers and consumers, we improve healthcare systems

delivered to seniors and help older adults to better manage their health.

• DSMP (Diabetes Self-Management Program)Developed by Stanford University, DSMP is designed for individualsand their caregivers who are dealing with type 2 diabetes. The 6-week,2½ hour classes cover techniques to deal with thesymptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, depression, anger, fear andfrustration. The program emphasizes appropri-ate exercise for maintaining and improvingstrength and endurance as well as, healthy eatingand appropriate use of medication. Participantswill develop weekly action plans, share experiences, and help eachother solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying outtheir self-management program.

• Healthy Brain, Healthy MindDeveloped within the University of Oklahoma Donald W. Rey-nolds Department of Geriatric Medicine, Healthy Brain, HealthyMind is designed to help individuals understand the many differ-ent paths to maintaining a healthy brain. Based on AmericanPsychological Association guidelines, this workshop consists of anintroductory session and 4 enriching sessions, each 1 hour inlength. Through class discussion and participation, participantswill learn more than a dozen ways to improve their physical andmental health.

• REACH (Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer’sCaregiver Health)This program provides training for someone caring for an indi-vidual with Alzheimer’s Disease that may be experiencing issues dueto the difficult behaviors related to the disease. After an initialassessment is completed to identify issues, counseling sessions andsupport groups are then conducted by telephone.
