vision questWhile deteriorating vision is considered “normal” as people age, here are steps you can take to make sure your eyes are healthy for a lifetime.

See food differently. Studies have found that consuming specific nutrients can help slow down vision loss. Regularly eating foods, such as green leafy vegetables, oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans, blueberries and citrus fruits or juices, may help ward off age-related vision problems. probiotics: the good guysThere are about 400 types of probiotic bacteria in the normal human digestive system. Many of these are beneficial or “friendly” bacteria that maintain digestive health. These organisms are essential, and offer a host of other benefits to the body. Keeping these good guys alive and thriving is necessary in order to to keep the “bad” bacteria from overgrowing and making you sick.

A balanced digestive system is also important to help your body absorb nutrients from food, reduce infections, strengthen the immune system and promote regularity. While yogurt, kefir and other cultured and fermented foods are good sources of probiotics, it may be necessary to supplement with concentrated amounts of these organisms.

exercise blissThis year, make a vow to get off the couch and move more than you did last year. The secret to getting the exercise you need to keep your heart healthy and maintain a proper weight is to find the type of exercise that fits your lifestyle. Here are some ways to get more movement into your day:

Move in quick spurts. Studies show getting your heart racing in short spurts can be as beneficial as a 60-minute workout. Jump rope fast for 3 minutes or sprint several times from one place to another. Just be sure to warm up properly beforehand.

Make moving easy. Keep a set of dumbbells around the house for a little muscle action. Place a yoga mat near your bed, and do downward dogs when you get up or before you go to bed. Use a stability ball as a desk chair to engage your core.

gain with no painInjury, increasing age and carrying too much weight can all cause wear and tear on the joints, which can eventually lead to arthritis and debilitating pain. To keep joints, muscles, ligaments and bones strong and stable for a lifetime, it’s important to make healthy choices.

daily dose of DIf you have diabetes, or are at high risk for the disease, you may want to increase your vitamin D intake. Studies have shown that vitamin D may reduce complications for those with type 2 diabetes, including helping the pancreas secrete insulin, improving insulin sensitivity, and decreasing blood sugar levels. Those with low vitamin D levels often struggle with obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Vitamin D also affects how well your body absorbs two key minerals, calcium and magnesium.

Limited, common sense exposure to sunlight is the best source of vitamin D. Fatty fish, such as tuna and sardines, and fortified foods, such as yogurt and cereals, can also supply the vitamin D you need. The USDA suggests that the average individual keep total fat intake to less than 35% of calories, limit saturated fats to less than 10% of calories, and limit trans fats to 1% of calories.

stay sun-safeWhile many of your favorite sunscreen formulas haven’t changed, recent FDA sunscreen guidelines have changed some of the label lingo in order to help you better understand which products offer the best protection. Here’s what to look for:

Full screen. The word “sunblock” has been replaced with “sunscreen.” Sunblock implies total protection, while sunscreen more accurately describes what the ingredients do—absorb or reflect UV light.

Go broad. A product can only be labeled “broad spectrum” or have a designated sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher if it protects against both ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) and ultraviolet A radiation (UVA). While sunburn is primarily caused by UVB, UVA rays can also age skin and cause damage that may lead to skin cancer.

Know your SPF label. Sunscreens with low SPF values of 2 through 14, which don’t carry UVB protection, will be labeled with a warning that indicates that the product doesn’t help prevent skin cancer or skin aging.

No sweat. Products that were labeled as “waterproof” or “sweatproof” must now be labeled “water resistant” for 40 minutes or 80 minutes.

kick cold soresThere’s never a good time to have a cold sore outbreak. Those itchy and unattractive lip blisters caused by a virus can be triggered through excessive sunlight, weather changes, colds and flu, and especially stress. Having a strong immune system and managing stress can help keep breakouts to a minimum. Wearing protective lip balm with SPF 30, especially when you are in the sun or wind, is also helpful.

If you do get a breakout, you may want to:

• Keep hands off so you don’t spread germs.

• Apply ice directly to the sore to bring down the swelling and discomfort.

• Sleep with your head propped up so the blister can drain, and fluid doesn’t settle.

• Consider taking the amino acid lysine, known for its preventive and healing properties, as it counteracts arginine, a substance that seems to trigger cold sores.

A cold sore will heal without treatment in 10 to 14 days, but if you’re bothered by frequent outbreaks, talk to your doctor about medications that can help.
