In ENVRI-FAIR, the participating RIs are workingtogether to build sustainable, transparent andtrustworthy data services that are compliant to theFAIR principles, while also addressing the needs andrequirements of each of the four sub-domainsAtmosphere, Marine, Solid Earth and Ecosystems &Biodiversity. To facilitate and guide the servicebuilding activities, RI’s data center staff require up-to-date and in-depth knowledge on topic s rangingfrom basic FAIR-related subjects, through ResearchData Management (RDM) core concepts, to specificIT technologies. Work Package 6, coordinated by ICOS and Lifewatch,is tasked with providing relevant training to bothENVRIs and key ENVRI stakeholder groups. WP6activities include many aspects of skills building,including analysing training needs andrequirements, the preparation of relevant trainingmaterials, performing training events and operatingthe Common Training Platform. In order to guide the planning and prioritisation oftraining activities, as well as to avoid duplication ofeffort, WP6 undertook a combined gap analysis of 1)the perceived needs & requirements for FAIR
training of ENVRI-FAIR partners, and 2) existingrelevant training materials developed both byENVRIs and well-established and authoritative RDMinstitutions. The gap analysis centered around a set of 22potential training topics, defined in discussions withrepresentatives from all ENVRI-FAIR subdomains.The figure shows all topics – six covering “generalFAIR” concepts (white labels, starting from the right)and 16 related to “RDM technologies” (black labels,from the left). In step one of the gap analysis, allENVRI-FAIR RIs were asked to fill out a questionnaire,describing their current level of knowledge (from“No knowledge” to “Very knowledgeable”) andestimated need of training (from “Not interested” to“High priority”) for each of the topics. Respondentswere als asked to indicate if their organisation couldsupply trainers, and if they had previously taken partin relevant FAIR skills building activities. Step two, the survey of existing training resources,was based on web searches and informationprovided by WP6 partners. The identified resourcesincluded courses, tutorials, webinars, self-study textsand presentations from workshops – mostlyproduced by organisations external to ENVRI-FAIR.The majority of the available materials we foundcover “general FAIR” topics, such as introductions toFAIR principles and basic guides on how to assessFAIRness of datasets. We found much fewer trainingresources covering technological RDM aspects ofFAIRness. Summarising the questionnaire responses over allENVRI-FAIR sub-domains, we identified eight topics

as having high priority – these are labelled with “H”in the figure. A further three topics (labelled “M”)scored high in certain sub-domains, and were thusassigned medium priority. A comparison with theavailable resources shows that there is aconsiderable need to develop new training materials(adapted to the ENVRI community) on most of thesehigh and medium priority topics. Details of thenalysis are described in deliverable D6.1.
WP6 has started this process and will work togetherwith the four sub-domains to organise skill buildingactivities to address their needs. Examples include awebinar series and face-to-face training events. Weare also continuing to update and extend theCommon Training Platform that was launched by theENVRIplus project.
