San Diego High's Charlie Powell, an end, was the board's selection back in 1950. Coach Sam Cathcart, former long Beach, Santa Barbara College and San Francisco 4gers gridiron performer, calls Murphy the finest football player we've had at Santa Barbara. This, of course, takes in performers like Peter Zucco, "player of the yearn in 1940 and Ernie Zampese, University of Southern California star, who was top CIF player pick in 1953. Murphy, not an imposing physical speciman at 5'10" and 175-pounds, is described as a "terror" on the field. Gary Holman as the outstanding players among Southern California smallschools football performers for 196n. Twenty-six high schools from the doubleand single A divisions of the CIFI along with the small school divisi~n,are rep­resented on this season 1 s All-Southern California "small schools" teams.

Co-players of the year, Gary Holman (Brea-Olinda) and John Huarte (MaterDei) were on the CIF small schools team in 1959. Holman was a first team selec­tion.. While Huarte was named to the second team.

John Huarte l whC') led Dick Coury1s Mater Dei eleven to the AA division titlewith a 32-0 win nver Santa Ana Valley I has been a standout performer for threeseasons. An nutstanding quarterback, Huarte passed for 16 TDs, completing 87 of130 for a .6.34 average and 11 439 yards. He carried the ball himself 55 times andgained 375 yards l for a seven-yard average. A good place-kicker and punter, Johnmade 29 of 37 placements and had a 4Q-yard punting average. In the title gameagainst Santa Ana Valley, he completed 11 rtf 13 passes for 164 yards and four TDs o

Dick Coury calls John "the greatest high school quarterback in the country-It.No less outstanding a performer in 1960 was Brea-Olinda's Gary Holman. At

6' and 190 :P!'unds, Gary completed 79 of 125 passes for 1 1 160 yards and 12 TDs. Heaveraged four yards running himself and scored seven TDs and kicked 40 PATs. Hescored S2 poirrt.s over the season, to lead his team to first place in the OrangeLeague. Brea-Olinda. was defeated 20-14 by Mary Star in the semi-finals of the Adivision playoffs.

Both John Ruarte and Gary Holman will receive their co-player of the yearawards at the 24th annual All-Southem California Board of Football Awards Programto be held at Helms Hall in u,s Angeles on Saturday morning, January 14, at 10:30a.m. At this time all those bnys who have been named for All-Southern CaliforniaFootball Team h.,nors, both on large and small schools teams, wi.ll be presentedwith their scroll awards.

Players other than Holman and Huarte w~ return from 1 59 are South Pasa­deDI's Don Johnson,Mary Star l s Vincent Mattera, Mater Dei's Dick Litzinger and JimWilliamson of Brea-Olinda. \villiamson and Mattera were on the second team lastseason, while LitZinger was named to the third squad in t 59.

Mary star of the Sea placed its fine fullback, Vincent Mattera (6'2 and215 pounds) on the first team. He was a unanimous selection as player of theleague. Another outstanding performer in the Parochial league and a first-teamselection is Tom Crandall" St. Francis High l s fine halfback. He gained over 1,000yards and has been a top performer for three years.

Don Johnson l South Pasadena's fine fullback, is back again on the firstteam. the 6'1 laO-pounder averaged nine yards per carry on 94 attempts in 160 and.scored 72 points.

Other top backs to be named to the team are Willie Hunter (Needles), whogained 1 1 lS) yards from scrimmagel averaging 10 yards per carry; Allan Curr, half­back from Culver City, who scored 73 points for the season; Pa.t Daily, Santa. Ynezhalfback and ~he Tri-Valley League t s top scorer with 91 IJ('ints; San Luis Obispo r sTony Boyle, Whe, gained over 800 yards this season while leading his team to the Adivision cro'Wll; Gil Lewis, who has quarterbacked Charter Oak to a 25-4 won-lostmark over past 3 years and was team's co-captain this year scoring 67 points; andBeaumont I s Roger Conley, who quarterbacked the DeAnza League champs, scoring 109points.

This marked the 24th year that Helms Hall f sprep board of athletics has selected the official Al1-·Los Angeles City FootballTeam.

Twenty-one Los Angeles City High Schools are represented on this year'sthree squads, composed of 12 players each. There was little time consumed inballoting for the 1960 player of the yearc Danny Espalin was a unanimous choiceand the senior tailback from Banning certainly demonstrated his greatness in thecity finals, when he netted 116 yards in 12 carries for three TDs, passed for t~~

Over the season Danny Espalin completed 47 of 94 passes for 821 yardsand 13 touchdowns. He carried the ball 94 times for 767 yards, 12 touchdowns andan 8 e 2 average. His total offense mark was 1,588 yards. Co-coaches Paul Huebnerand Gene Vo1lnogle, who have directed the Pilots to a remarkable 38-4 won-lostrecord over the past four seasons, speak in glowing terms of their fire c~acke~

tailback. Danny was one of three captains directing the Banning team this yearand was as fine a runner as seen anywhere in city ranks.

Banning High School, 1JIarine League Champions for 1960, and one of the strong­est teams in the school' s history, placed four players on the All-Marine Leagueteam as members of the Helms All-Southern California Board of Athletics met atHelms Hall to make their annual gridiron selections. Placing two linemen -- endJim Arens and tackle Richard Reed -- and two backs -- Danny Espalin and CharlesJackson - on the first team, Banning also placed four players on the second teame

Paul Huebner and Gene Vollnogle, co-coaches of the all-powerful Pilots overa period of the past four years, speak in glowing terms of their star tailback,Danny Espalin, who was a unanimous selection as league player of the year. Dannywas one of three captains of the Banning team during 1960 and was most adept inthe running department. The 517, l60-pound scatback scored 54 points during thefull season and 42 points during league play.

This marked the fourth year in a row that Banning has won the !'Iarine I.eag'11etitle. The Pilots wound up the season with a 4-0 in league play and were strongcontenders for the los Angeles City grid championshi:p. Behind Banni.."l'}S in theleague standings came San Pedro (3-1), Jordan (1-1-2), Gardena (1-3-1) and Nar­bonne (0-3-1). The Pilots had one of the finest defensive records in the city in1960, allowing but 37 points to be scored on them, while accounting for 115 points.

Only three lower classmen were named on this year's All-Marine League team.One on the first team, Narbonne's center Jesse Gutierrez, and two on the second,Stuart Dahlager (Narbonne) and Ronnie Charles (Jordan). Just one repeater wasnamed from last year - Gardena's Sheldon Keith at center - and he was again putat the second-team center post.

Winston Tucker's Van Nuys· eleven" the highest scoring team in los Angeles Cityfootball ranks this season and the Wast Valley League champion, placed six playerson the 1960 All-Southern California Board of Athletics first team" as annual selec­tions were made at Helms Hall last week. Boasting the finest offensive and defen­sive record (points scored) in city play" Van Nuys was headed on the All-East Valleyteam by fullback Jim Honberger, who was selected as player of the year.

Honberger, who gathered in ninety percent of the opposing coaches player ofthe year votes" performed at fullback for Coach Tucker at Van Nuys, scoring 96points during the season. He is described by his coach as "big and fast and a hardrunner, with a good attitude. 1I

Along with Homberger, Van Nuys placed linemen Bill Bloodgood, Art Hand" BarI'7Antis and Gary Iantz on the top eleven, along with its smooth quarterback, Jim Knapp.Halfback Mike McDonnell made the second team.

Orlie Schmidt' s San Fernando team placed three perfonners on the first squad,as it wound up in a tie for second in league play with a 3-2 won-lost mark. TackleBob Wittenberg and backs Gary Payne and Bobby Mitchell were the San Fernando teammembers to be selected.

There were five players who repeated from last year's All-East Valley teamoPlayer of the year Jim Homberger was again named to the first team" as was Grant'sSteve Kovner. Jim Knapp, second team end choice last year moved to a first team backspot in 160, whileBob Dietrich dropped from first to seoond team. North Hollywood'sDon McCall repeated his second team tackle selection.

For having been named as the top performer in the East Valley League for 1960,Jim Honberger will receive a special medal award at the 24th annUal All-SouthernCalifornia Board of Football Awards program at Helms Hall on the morning of January14, 1961 at 10:30 am. Finishing in a tie for the Southern Loop crownwith 4-1 records, both Manual Arts and Los Angeles placed four players on the A11­League first team. Player of the year honors went to the Romans' Olvin Moreland,who performed at left halfback for Harry Edelson and Jim Pendleton.

Moreland, senior, lSO-pound halfback who performed on both offense and defensefor Los Angeles High, scored 48 points during the league season and 80 for the yea.r~He averaged better than nine yards per carry and notched five intercep·t,ions fromhis defensive halfback post.

Only" Manual Arts tackle Perry Parks is a lower classmen on the first team,while two juniors -- Dorsey's :t-'Iorris Lewis and \~ashington'sAndy Piligian - madethe league second team. Three players are back from last year's teams o Jefferc~nguard vJillie Smith moves up to the first team from the t 59 second squad,while bothClaude Ward and Alfred Blanchard, named to the first team in '59, are second teamselections this year.

The Southern League wound up with Manual Arts and los Angeles tied for firstplace with 4-1 records. There was a three-way tie for third place among Dorsey,Jefferson and Fremont, all with 2-3 records. Washington finished in sixth placewith a 1-4 mark.

Garfield, third place team with a 3-2 record, was represented by two players, withlf11ilson and Huntington Park p1aoing one eaCh.

Player of the year honors were captured by Raymond Chavez, described ~ CoachCheffers "as the best all-around player at Roosevelt." Co-captaining the team f::-o:.this halfback position, Ray carried the ball 94 times for 637 yards and a 6.7 yardaverage and 78 points. Chavez shared honors on the Roosevelt team with quarterbac:':Mike Garrett, who also received good support for player of the year honors.

Besides Garrett and Chavez, Roosevelt placed co-captain Dick Miyaga~m at aguard position and Jim Sadamoto at tackle. Both boys were considered among the toplinemen in city play this season.

South Gate contributed three linemen - Ben Perrott, Richard Beard and DennisEvenson and baekfield performer Fred Iorah. Richard Beard is one of four lower­classmen on the first team" two of whi.ah are sophomores. Roosevelt's fine back,¥.dke Garrett, is a junior, while Wilson end John Berokoff and Garfield quarterback,Alex Sotomayor, have two years of high school football remaining.

Louis Birnbaum's Sheiks from Hollywood High School fashioned a perfect 5-0season and placed six players on the All-Western League first team as All-SouthernCalifornia Board of Football members cast their annual grid ballots at Helms Halllast week. It was impossible. for board members to separate the achievements oftwo stalwart Hollywood players - quarterback George Powell and center Dick Cummins- so they were named co-players of the year in Western loop play.

Powell" a 6' ~ l75-pound itA" student, is an outstanding ball handler, passerand runner, in the opinion of his coach. Dick Cummins~ ;'10, lBO-pound offensivecenter and linebacker, performed nobly as a blocker and was all over the field ondefense. Five of last year's All-Westem League players are on this season's squads.Dick Crotsley, 14estchester t s fine end, is the only first-team repeater from '59,with Erik Whitaker and Rod Lipscomb moving up to the first team from last year'ssecond squad. Bill Burns and Jon Kinsey were both named to the second team in1959 as in 1960.

Eagle Rock's senior fullback, Owen Tansey, was the board's choice as NorthernLeague player of the year. Described by his coach, Joe Kelly, as lithe hardestrunning back we've ever had at Eagle Rockll , Tansey carried 72 times during theseason for a 6.1 average. At 5'10 and 180 pounds" Tansey shown brightly in severa::.league ball games and possessed a great attitude for the co-champs.

Roy Jae's \iest Valley League champions, Reseda High School, placed fi.,,-e play­ers on the all-league team for 1960, as members of Al1-Southern California Boardof Football met to make their annual football team selections. Runner-up Birming­ham followed Reseda in capturing places on the first team with four, inclUdingWest Valley player of the year choice Thomas Lupo.

A second team selection in 1959, Lupo quarterbacked George Goff's eleven inremarkable fashion. The 6', 190-pound senior completed 77 of 139 passes for 1400yards and 16 touchdowns. He also added 300 yards running. He was a unanimouschoice of the league coaches as the top back in the league.

Seven players from last year's All-\iest Valley team are back this season(\Both first team ends, Chuck Markham of Birmingham and ~~arren Wetzel of Cleveland,repeat as the lea.gue I s top wingmen. Birmingham's Gene Harkey again found a firstteam guard spot. Three others -- Vern Vihlene and Tom Kehl of Reseda and Lupoof Birmingham -- were elevated from last year's second team., Canoga Park's JohnBushfie1d reca.ptured his second team line position.

West Valley league final standings were Reseda (5-0), Birmin~ham (3--1), CanogaPark (2-2), Cleveland (1-3), Granada Hills (0-4-1), and Taft (0-5). Johnny Ogden;..Reseda's junior halfback, was the only lower classmen to make the first teams whileDennis Jones of Birmingham and Larry Sharp of Granad..s Hills both have another :y"'earto make the first team from this year's second squad.
