TAKING PRIDE IN OUR SCHOOL

• So far this year, HHS has won 4 Conference Titles (golf, XC, gymnastics, girls swim) and is home to the Wrestling Conference Champion.

• Girls Swim was 2014-2015 Region Champs and the 200 Medley Relay Team won states.

• Heritage is home to the All Met Athlete of the Year in XC, Weini Kelati.

• In 2004, a Heritage student began ‘Walking for Water,’ since then, HHS has raised over $140,000 to build 30 wells in Burkina Faso, Africa.

• Every year, our French Honor Society students serve as ‘Patients’ for Medic, EMT’s, and Fire Fighter testing at the LC Fire & Rescue to help the county first-responders in their training.

• Heritage is in its 11th year of its partnership with The Hannah-Arendt-Gesamtschule in Soest, Germany and has served as host-school for German students as well as sent students to Soest for exchange student opportunities.

• HHS piloted and developed the Dual Enrolled Geospatial Science Program, now available at 11 high schools and gaining state-level recognition.

• Last year, two teams of students competed in the High School Programming Competition at UVA and placed 5th and 13th out of 50 groups.

• T.W.E.L.V.E. was one of three high schools in VA selected to work with the Tallis Scholar's at Christopher Newport University in December.

• Every student who auditioned from Heritage earned perfect sight reading scores in their VA All State audition.

• Heritage is the home of the Forensics Conference Champion, Golda Houndouh for Original Oratory.

• We have multiple Drama and Music students performing as soloists at the Kennedy Center this spring at the National Society of Arts and Letters awards ceremony.

• Heritage was selected for multiple Cappie-nominations and awards for the 2014 production of Les Miserables.

• HHS is a pilot school for Russian Language and Russian Studies Courses.

• Heritage was recognized as a 2014 “Blue Ribbon School” by W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Program for our excellent pass rate for the W!SE Financial Literacy Exam.

• Ms. Vereb, our choir director, was invited to speak at Christopher Newport University for a conference for future music educators this Spring.

• Ms. Valerie Yi , HHS English teacher, is being featured in a video series by LCPS TV as an Outstanding Teacher called “Cool for School.”

• Ms. Beth deButts, FACs teacher, was named 2015 Best Teacher in Loudoun in the Leesburg Today ‘Best of Loudoun’ Poll.

• We support the Backpack Buddies Program, by providing weekend backpacks of food for those in need.

• We have multiple teachers selected to serve as AP graders for CollegeBoard.

• HHS Pride Time Groups wrote 1,250 letters to Macy’s Make A Wish Foundation, donated 100+ coats and winter items, wrote 300+ letters of support to current military personnel, colored 1,500 jeans squares for Joshua’s Hands, and much more.

EARTH SCIENCE

• Will explore historical development of science concepts

• Will conduct two, in-class science research projects that will support learning science content (SOL and beyond)

• Will examine current STEM issues impacting society and examine the science content and process to validate

• Approximately 30 minutes of homework per block.

• Will conduct in-class science research projects related to class that will support learning science content (SOL and beyond) – Early projects will be largely guided by teacher – Later projects will allow students and teacher to

work as a team

• Each student will use developed skills in scientific process to conduct an independent science investigation in small groups. Project will investigate questions developed by the class and specifically related to class concepts.

• Research skills taught specifically in Earth Science Research are: Finding reliable data, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and supporting conclusions with solid evidence from the data. Students will be expected to have these skills entering Research Biology

• Approximately 60 minutes of homework per block.

– Ability to read and understand scientific literature

– Create proper MLA citations

– Analyze data – draw conclusions and find trends

• Time Commitment: – When research assignments are in progress, students are expected to spend 1-1.5 hours on Biology each night.

– Very little class time is used to actively research and complete assignments; work is to be completed outside of class time.

• Number of Assignments: – Various small assignments: MLA practice, reading research, finding journal articles, interpreting data

– 2 “smaller” research assignments – based on class labs

– 1 “larger” symposium project – student design lab and complete lab in class

• Course is intended to explicitly prepare students for AP World History course in 10th grade

• On average 50-60 minutes of homework between class blocks

• Homework designed to reinforce concepts taught in class

• 1-2 essays per quarter

• Attention paid to preparing students for DBQ, Compare and Change Over Time Essays

• Primary Source analysis may involve collection of 4 or more documents with a writing prompt

• Text readings on a nightly basis

• Reading of 1 historically based novels per semester

• Socratic Seminars 1 per quarter

• Course is considered honors level and carries a .5 bump on GPA

• Course is intended to build student knowledge and skill toward more rigorous courses in the future

• On average 25-30 minutes of homework between class blocks

• Homework designed to reinforce concepts taught in class

• Strong Algebra 1 skills. Successful in Algebra 1 and passed Geometry.

STRATEGIES FOR 9TH-GRADE-PARENT SUCCESS

• Check Clarity/Phoenix with your student – Look for trends if struggling: homework vs exams

• Encourage your student to communicate with their teacher – Encourage them to ask questions if they do not understand

– Encourage them to use their resources during school

• Encourage them to get involved

• Monitor the transition

• Reach out to their school counselor if you are concerned about their transition socially, emotionally, or academically

• Remember, development and maturation happen at different rates…hang in there.
