Practice Expectations

Practice Expectations To prepare the athlete for a Championship experience, practices have been designed in

several phases. These phases are set up to do the following 1) build a foundation, 2)

strengthen fundamentals, 3) increase endurance, 4) become a skilled sprinter, and 5) taper for

performance. To meet these expectations athletes must do the following:

Team Meeting

We will begin each practice with an overview meeting. We will take roll, Athletes will be

introduced to the purpose of the practice, the goal and objectives to achieve, and times that

they should hydrate and refuel. Athletes who do not have the needed equipment, water bottle,

and a refueling snack* will be excused from practice.

Dynamic Warm-up

The Dynamic warm-up will consist of one to all of the following exercises, prior to getting in the

water: Jumping Jacks, Butt Kicks, Jump-rope, Arm Circles, High knees, lunges, etc.

Warm-up Set

The warm-up set will depend on the focus of the workout. It will last about 10 minutes.

Main Focus Set

The goals and objectives of the day will dictate the focus of the workouts, and setup.

Cool-down and checking for understanding.

After the cool-down, there will be a knowledge check to make sure the athlete understood the

purpose of the set, and help them recognize the process.

Swim Meet Expectations

USA Swim Meets – Athletes will enter at their own cost, and enter the amount and type of

events desired. Athletes times count towards the end of season goal of qualifying for Senior

State, and possibly a National Meet. USA Swim Meet times do not qualify an athlete for

UHSAA 6A State.

High School Meets – Athletes events are chosen by the Head Coach to meet the needs of the

Meet, and to win the meet. Athletes times in Invitational, Region, and State Meets do count for

USA Swim Times for Senior State and National Meets.

Proposed Practices will be held on Tuesday / Thursday Evenings from 8:15 to 9:15 pm.

HS Season Training (March to May)

The Varsity Water Polo Team will hold required practices in the morning and afternoon.

Please plan accordingly.

Athletes will be split into two groups. A Varsity and a Junior Varsity group. This will be based

on a two-day tryout. The Varsity team will only consist of 10-13 athletes. The Junior Varsity

will be up to 13 athletes. We will have multiple JV teams if needed.

Tryouts: To be eligible to tryout an athlete is required to have a 3.0 GPA and complete a full

season of High School Swimming or if in the 7th or 8th grade complete the short-course USA

the JV Team. Team dynamics for tryouts will begin at the Junior Olympics in July.

Water Polo Practice: Practices will be together both boys & girls in the Morning from 5:00 -

recommend to the coaching staff a replacement from the JV team. If that replacement

cannot attend morning and afternoon swim practices, they will not be given a spot on

the team. Only athletes who were eligible to tryout may be considered.

Page 15: Herriman High School Swim & Water Polo Team Handbook · Herriman High School Swim & Water Polo Team Handbook 2017-18 Persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement

HS Varsity Water Polo Team Selection Process

HS Varsity Water Polo Team Selection Process To create a championship team, there is a molding and shaping that must take place. This process will

take about a year to define the process. Here are a few of the guiding and defining principles that will be

required:

1. Speed

a. Only athletes who are committed swimmers will be considered to participate on the

varsity or travel team. Swimmers must be swimming in an organized age-group or

team practice at least 3 days a week in the off-season and full focus in the Short

Course Season. To be eligible to participate on a Varsity team, athletes must complete

the HS swim Season or if 7th or 8th grade, the short course USA Swim season.

2. Strength

a. Strength and Conditioning is necessary to play the hardest sport in the world. Strong

upper body, core, and leg strength will need to be a focus of the off-season

development. Varsity Athletes will be chosen from among the strongest in the water

and in the weight room.

3. Technical Skills

a. During a two day tryout in February, technical skills will be judged. Athletes will be

judged on their execution of ODP technical skills, such as treading, and movement in

the water, passing, passing under pressure, shooting, driving, and the ability to steal.

4. Team Development & Tactical Execution

a. Team development will happen in three ways.

i. Trust. The coaching staff will be focused on the group that trusts each other.

Trust is earned, so athletes who develop habits of hard work, follow through,

and diligence will demonstrate this characteristic.

ii. Tactical Skills. These will be taught in practice, but it’s how they will be

executed in games that will be of most importance. Do you have good muscle

memory and focus to be where you need to be to score, defend, or create?

iii. Team Dynamics. How do you play? This will be looked at through out the

season beginning with the Junior Olympic Games, Fall league, and ODP

tryouts. Athletes who choose not to participate in these events, will not have

the opportunity to develop this skill at the highest level. This will help in the

selection process for the best well rounded team to represent Herriman

Aquatics.

Athletes who do not meet the requirements, but are great players will still have a great opportunity to

participate in the JV Season and State Championship.

Practice Expectations

Practice Expectations Just like swimming, athletes practices are well thought out with a year plan. At this time,

Herriman Aquatics is not prepared for a National Finish, so we begin with the Junior Olympics

to kick off the Summer training plan. To prepare the athlete for a State Championship

experience, practices are designed in several phases. These phases are set up to do the

following 1) build a technical foundation, 2) develop tactical advantage, 3) increase endurance,

4) adapt to conditions, and 5) taper for performance. To meet these expectations athletes

must do the following:

Team Meeting

We will begin each practice with an overview meeting. We will take roll, Athletes will be

introduced to the purpose of the practice, the goal and objectives to achieve, and times that

they should hydrate and refuel. Athletes who do not have the needed equipment, water bottle,

HS Varsity Water Polo Team Selection Process

HS Varsity Water Polo Team Selection Process To create a championship team, there is a molding and shaping that must take place. This process will

take about a year to define the process. Here are a few of the guiding and defining principles that will be

required:

5. Speed

6. Strength

a. Strength and Conditioning is necessary to play the hardest sport in the world. Strong

upper body, core, and leg strength will need to be a focus of the off-season

development. Varsity Athletes will be chosen from among the strongest in the water

and in the weight room.

7. Technical Skills

a. During a two day tryout in February, technical skills will be judged. Athletes will be

judged on their execution of ODP technical skills, such as treading, and movement in

the water, passing, passing under pressure, shooting, driving, and the ability to steal.
