Over the last few weeks, nineteen students from Suzhou (pronounced ‘Sue-Joe’) in China have been visiting the local area as part of the Bath-Suzhou Partnership. The students have been staying with local families and have been studying at Writhlington School. On Wednesday the 20th June the students and their teachers visited Peasedown St John Primary School for their China Day. The pupils of the school helped the students to discover what life is like in a large, friendly primary school and then the students from Suzhou shared an insight into their own country and culture. The pupils of Peasedown St John Primary School even had the opportunity to try out some of the Mandarin that they have been fortunate to have been learning with Mrs Kong-Friel this year.

The children from years 3 and 4 in Saturn class of Midsomer Norton Primary School have been learning about Australia as a class project. They were all tasked with producing a model of the Great Barrier Reef as their project homework and their teacher was overwhelmed with the fantastic models they produced. The children learnt about the fi sh and aquatic life that live on the Barrier Reef and also discussed the pollution and the threats to the reef too, they all very much enjoyed their topic and would love to visit Australia.

Cub Scouts from 1st Radstock pack visited Radstock Museum recently to learn about how local people lived in Victorian times. Tom Preece from the museum spoke about life at home and at work in the mines. The youngsters crammed into a tiny cage which was used to lower miners underground and were able to try out for themselves the ‘gus and crook’ by which young boys were employed to remove freshly hewn material from the coalface. The Gus comprised a rope girdle worn around the waist, from which a chain was suspended; the crook was a hook, placed in the chain, passed between the legs and attached to a cart. Carting boys were used in similar fashion to pit ponies. The Cubs learned that this method was in use underground for more than 350 years and portrays the dreadful conditions under which young boys were obliged to work. They looked at the current display of patchwork and quilting from Chilcompton and explored the mock-up of a Victorian house. One Cub was heard to ask “What is the newspaper in the toilet for?”

An observer from Barnados pointed out this week that an autistic child can have up to eighteen separate assessments from various professionals to confi rm the diagnosis. These assessments inevitably focus on the things the child fi nds diffi cult – speech, social skills, behaviour, poor concentration and so on.This process can leave you feeling alienated and grief stricken that your child has no potential, no value and no hope. However, if you can summon up the courage to test the water, you can discover talents in your children you never knew existed.Courage is vital – it takes a brave parent to embark on a new activity with an autistic child. You can predict the behavioural challenges and anxiety that will occur if things don’t go according to plan. Realistically, you may not see Olympian prospects beckoning – not when the concentration span is dictated by the timing of the squash and biscuits! You can see the friendship, cooperation, teamwork and most of all the pride and self-confi dence that taking part in an activity can bring. So go on, dip your toe in and test the water.By Joanna McNiff – AutismHelp!Email – [email protected]

Brownies, Guides and Scouts from Paulton made mosaics in celebration of the forthcoming Olympic Games. The fi ve winning designs had been chosen earlier by a team of local councillors, and were crafted by the boys and girls during a Saturday morning session. The fi nished mosaics will be presented to the town at a ceremony in a couple of weeks’ time, and will be on public display in prominent places.Megan, a guide aged twelve, said “I am very pleased with my British Lion, which was designed by my friend Anna.” Thomas, a cub aged eight had made a mosaic of the Olympic Torch, which he described as “just like the real thing”.

Beavers from 1st Radstock and 1st Chew Stoke spent an enjoyable afternoon at Folly Farm in Pensford recently. The boys and girls aged between six and eight collected branches to make dens in the woods, and then were shown how to light fi res using fi re sticks, dry hay and twigs. They went on to add larger pieces of wood to their fi res and to prepare and cook twists on sticks to which some added wild garlic, and to toast marshmallows. One of the Radstock Beavers, Ben aged 7 said, “It was brilliant. I feel like Bear Grylls! I can light a fi re and cook bread on a stick and I can build a den.”Folly Farm comprises a 250-acre nature reserve and is owned and managed by Avon Wildlife Trust.

Kadie aged 8 and Kian aged 9 both worked together to make a series of glass lanterns which they sold to make money for their school, High Littleton Primary School. The children presented the head teacher with the £15.70 they raised and asked if the money could be spent on school resources. It was agreed that some books for the library would be purchased in their name. Well done to you both, a fabulous achievement.

Beavers from High Littleton recently visited the emergency response centre at Stanton Drew. They learnt how to give heart compression using resuscitation models, and also how to stop bleeding by applying pressure and a bandage. They looked at the rescue vehicles which included an ambulance, an ambulance car, and a boat pulled by a quad bike. Beaver Leader Tricia Horwood said, “The boys loved hearing the sirens and switching on the fl ashing lights. Each Beaver attending was awarded a fi rst aid badge.”

High Littleton beavers sleepover

The Children of High Littleton and Pensford Schools started the day with a quick ‘Flashmob’ outside the Little Theatre in Bath, producing a lot of curiosity from the passers-by. They then headed across to the square alongside Bath Abbey. Starting the dance with the children lying on the ground and sitting on benches next to members of the public led to a lot of intrigue and as the music started, leading to a mass ascent of pigeons, the children rose up to perform. Around 100 spectators appreciated the effort and performance before

The musicians at St. John’s Primary have been very busy entertaining local residents in the last month. The choir participated in the popular ‘Party in the City’ event, singing alongside other schools to share their passion for Sport and Music, under the direction of Brazilian composer Adriano Adelwale. This was followed by a lunchtime music recital at our link church, St. John’s in Midsomer Norton, where the choir shared more songs, alongside an interesting range of performances by solo instruments, orchestra and recorder players from Year 2-6. The talent and commitment of these musicians was evident to all - we have some future musicians in our midst!

them. Their next venue was the South Gate shopping centre, directly outside the Apple store. Having cleared a space to dance, as well as ‘moving on’ a 6 foot chilli, the performance began again, this time to at least 150 shoppers and torch-goers. The children executed their moves almost perfectly, with dancers appearing from the different shops and there was a huge round of applause at the end. After a lunch break at Parade Gardens, they moved on to Laura Place for their fi nal dance of the day. As the last echoes of ‘No Light, No Light’ were heard along Great Pulteney Street, the

torch-bearer came into view. It certainly proved to be a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

Olympic style fever gripped Midsomer Norton when over seventy children and adults from across the Somer Valley took part in the Rotary Club’s Summer Swimming Event. Held at the South Wansdyke Sports Centre, swimmers from Welton Baptist Church, Midsomer Norton Football Club, South Wansdyke Masters and Norton Radstock Swimming Club took to the water for a fun fi lled afternoon. The event was organised in celebration of the up and coming 2012 Olympic Games by the Midsomer Norton and Radstock Rotary Club in partnership with the Norton Radstock Swimming Club. Children ranging from 6 to 15 years competed in individual sprint races for gold, silver and bronze medals, which were supplied by sponsors of the event Midsomer Norton Town Council. In addition the organisers, Norton Radstock Swimming Club, took some Olympic events, gave them a bit of a twist and turned them into fun relay events for the children and their parents. The Action Team at St. John’s visited the Houses of Parliament last month with some other local schools in the area. We learnt about democracy and voting as well as how our country is run. We got a tour of the building and found out lots of information, including how the Prime Minister makes decisions. We got to go in to the House of Commons and see where the debates take place. After our visit, we had a walk around some of the sites in London, including 10 Downing Street, Trafalgar Square and Big Ben. It was a really good day and we learnt a lot that we were able to take back to school and share with the other children.

Fifteen Beaver Scouts from 1st Peasedown St John slept over at Radstock Scout Hall recently; for some it was their fi rst night ever away from home. Their leaders organised a great programme of activities - hiking to the Writhlington Colliery site, map making, cookie baking, a visit to Midsomer Norton South station and a campfi re in the evening, alongside more fun and games. Joshua aged six confessed to being so tired on Saturday night he went “straight off to sleep”. Skateboarding is a worldwide sport which can be a bit tricky at fi rst, but with practice can become lots of fun. There are hundreds of tricks you can learn but be aware, skateboarding is dangerous and so you must wear a helmet and pads at all times.

THE FIRST STEP : HOW TO OLLIEThe ollie is the most important skateboarding trick. In order to do a kick fl ip, heel fl ip, pop shove it, and pretty much any other skateboarding trick, you need to know how to ollie. Your foot position when doing an ollie is pretty important. First put your front foot in the middle of your board and your back foot on the tail. To do an ollie the fi rst thing you do is bend your knees. The second thing to do in an ollie is push the tail of your board down to the ground, then the moment your tail touches the ground you jump up (this is the part that many people have trouble with. It may take a few tries before you get can get it). As you are almost at the full height of your ollie, start moving your front foot up to the truck bolts at the front of your board to even it out. When you land make sure that both of your feet are over or almost over your truck bolts, also make sure your knees are bent.

When it comes to choosing our child’s nursery or pre-school we all feel very pressurised to make the right decision. Nearly one million children are looked after in day nurseries in the UK and the number has consistently grown over the last 10 years, so you are not alone in making this decision.Start by obtaining a list of nurseries and pre-schools from your local Children’s Information Service and you can start researching! It’s very important to book a visit to the nursery or pre-schools you are considering as you will be able to meet the staff and see how happy the children are.

Some things you may wish to consider and check;• Most nurseries are open from 8am until 6pm but you

should enquire about provisions for earlier drop off and later pick up if required and what are the additional costs for this service, if any?

• Does your employer participate in a Child Care Voucher Scheme and does your chosen nursery accept the vouchers. This is a great way to save money.

• Is the nursery registered with OFSTED and ask to see the latest OFSTED report?

• If you work outside of your local area, would it be benefi cial to have the nursery close to home or close to work?

• Think of drop offs and pick up’s and how this fi ts with your daily routine

• Does the nursery provide all meals, if so what and where is it cooked?

• What is the daily routine? Including snack times, meal times, free play and activities.

• For babies, do you need to provide formula and nappies?• Where do babies sleep during the day and if your toddler

is still having a daytime nap where will they be able to sleep?

• Is there an outside play area so that children can spread their wings and enjoy the fresh air?

• Is the nursery entrance secure?• Is there a settling in period?• Will your child have a key worker?

Once you’ve found the nursery or pre-school you and your child are happy with you can start to relax and look forward to watching your child fl ourish and grow.

LET’S PARTY!One of the joys of having children is being able to create magic and fantasy for them, and seeing the sheer delight on their faces at the sight of something special.Birthday Parties are a great chance to bring some of that magic to a child, or to a group of children, and although it can be hard work the results and memories for the child make it more than worthwhile. The range of choice for Birthday Parties these days is staggering, and like everything else, it is hard to please all the people all the time - even the little people! However, it is worth remembering it is the children you want to impress, not their parents!

Looking to host the perfect childs party?

Whatever your budget, don’t lose sight of the reason for the party - enjoyment all round. Ask the little Birthday Person what sort of party they would like (within reason!) and who they want to invite - get some advice from teachers and playgroup leaders if you don’t know all your child’s friends.

Spend your money and your time wisely. If money is tight, make the things you can yourself and only spend on the things you can’t. Even if you have a reasonable budget you don’t need to go over-board - it is better to do a few things very well than try and do too much and end up in a muddle!

GOOD LUCK!

Squeeze the meat from the sausages and mix with the crumbs and sage. Halve the pastry into 2 rectangular blocks. On a fl oured surface, roll each block lengthways only until you have 2 thin sheets, about 20 x 45-50cm.Thinly spread the onions in a strip over the pastry, leaving a 3cm border along one long-edge of each sheet. Divide the meat along the onions, shaping into a smooth roll, then brush just the border with beaten egg. Fold excess pastry over the meat and press to stick to the eggy border. Trim this edge, tuck under slightly to hold, then brush all over with egg. Scatter with seeds and slice each roll into 5. Bake on baking sheets for 35-40 mins until golden and cooked through. Once cool, freeze in bags. Defrost overnight in fridge.

Next time you visit the beach, comb the shores with your children to gather supplies for your own spectacular beach sculptures! Please note very strong glue is needed to make these sculptures, which, for safety, should only be handled by adults. You will need:Shells, pebbles, driftwood, or any interesting bits found along the beach Strong glue (we used a hot glue gun)Take a walk along the beach to collect some bits. Look what interesting shapes that you can find. Bring the best of your collection home with you.Arrange your bits into the shape that you like. Older children, carefully supervised, can glue their creations together. Younger children should ask an adult to glue them together. Leave to dry.

You will need:A piece of paper about 1m by 20cm, two wide ice lolly sticks, PVA (white) glue, sticky tape, colouring pens.Decorate your paper with the pens. We went for butterflies and flowers but older children might like to try something more authentic like blossom or calligraphy.‘Pleat’ the paper into folds about 1 1/2cm wide.Glue a lolly stick onto each end of the paper. The lolly sticks should stick out about 2cm above the top of the paper.

Chinese Fan Craft

Here’s a fabric flower craft which will use up your scraps, provide practice to learn to sew, and create a really pretty display! These flower “yoyos” can be wired as we have done here, or you can glue the flowers onto sticks and stand them in a pot, sew them onto headbands, hats, T-shirts or bags, or stitch a safety pin on the back to make pretty flower brooches, which make lovely little gifts. You will need:Fabric in 2 coordinating designs, buttons, thread, garden wire.Cut 2 paper circles about 4 and 6 inches in diameter. Pin each to one of the pieces of fabric and cut out. Alternatively draw around cups and saucers onto the fabric.Cut a piece of thread long enough to go all of the way around the edge of your biggest circle with some spare.

Fabric FlowerKnot one end and thread the other.Sew a loose running stitch around the outside of the largest circle, finishing with the thread to the right side of the fabric.Pull the thread so the fabric gathers. Secure the gap with a few stitches. Knot the fabric and tie off.Repeat with the smaller circle. When you have your two yo-yos, layer them up with a button over the top hole. Stitch the button in place going through both yoyos.Finish off by stitching a length of garden wire to the back, bending the ends into a loop so that they aren’t sharp and dangerous. You can now twist your flower onto a branch or pop it in a vase.

Throw a BYOB party. This is cheap, imagination-driven fun. You wield cutting implements and supply lots of tape. Guests are charged with one simple task: Bring. Your. Own. Box. Together kids can construct a fort or spaceship or whatever they please out of the boxes, then spend hours playing in it. There are plenty of other ways to amuse kids with cardboard boxes too.

Make sponge bombs out of cheap household sponges, then soak and use for tossing games. Unlike water balloons, these will last all summer

Take late-night walks. Kids enjoy this even more when they are in charge of the torches.

Encourage grubby fun. Designate an area of the garden where kids can play right in the dirt. They might want to use it to build mountains and valleys for their toy dinosaurs, cars, or action fi gures. They might want to add water to make mud pies. They might want to dig holes, perhaps looking for archaeological fi nds.

Throw a garden Olympics party. Create competitions like sack races, tumbling, Frisbee discus throws, and tossing bean bags into a bucket.

Go on a camera scavenger hunt. First choose a theme, like Ten Things That Move or A Dozen Signs of Summer. Then send kids out with cameras (disposable cameras) to grab some images. Encourage them to fi nd creative, funny, and unusual ways to interpret the theme. Pop the photos up on the computer screen or take disposable cameras to a one-hour processing shop.

Stage a treasure hunt. First, hide a prize. The prize doesn’t have to be a toy (it could be a cool drink or a packed lunch!). Next, hide clues. For non-readers the clues can be rebus pictures, digital photos, or magazine cut-outs. For readers try riddles, short rhymes, or question-based clues. Each one should lead the child to a spot where the next clue is hidden. If you have more than one child let everyone search for clues and fi gure them out together. Or stage treasure hunts for each child in turn using the collaborative efforts of those who are waiting. Once kids are familiar with treasure hunts they can easily set them up on their own.

BATH CITY FARM

Cowtastic Farm Park at Farrington’s offers an affordable, fun-fi lled day out for all the family for only £2.50-£3 per person – or just 22p a day with an 8-week pass!

There’s a farm-themed play area for the younger children plus lots of exciting activities for older kids, including grass sledges – the park even has its very own fort! You’ll fi nd lots of animals too, with Shetland ponies, pigs, goats, donkeys, ducks and chickens ready to make friends – and ample hand-washing stations! The farm trail is matted for easy access with plenty of places to sit and rest, and you can buy scrumptious snacks, drinks, ice-cream and pocket money gifts at the ‘Cow-osk’.

Open every day: Monday – Friday from 10am to 7pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm.

The Summer holidays are nearly upon us and its good to get some dates in the diary for some exciting days out for the whole family to enjoy. According to the met offi ce July and August are set to be sunny and dry so its a great time to put those rain coats and wellies away and get out and about and enjoy the British Summer, whilst it lasts. The summer holidays gives us a chance to spend some quality family time together and take some time out from the hussle and bussle of the normally daily routine.

Living in the South West we are lucky enough to have some fantastic places to visit right on our doorstep from exhilarating horse riding and go-karting to chilled out days sightseeing, there’s so much to do in the local area that you don’t need to spend an arm and leg on fuel to get there. Also a recent study has indicated that there is strong evidence of a link between active school children and

academic performance, which is due to the increased blood fl ow to the brain, so not only will you be having fun but potentially creating a child genius by getting out and about and being active!!

A great activity for the whole family to enjoy is horse riding, what better way to spend the day than trekking across the beautiful English countryside with the children, plus its a great

fun way to burn off up to 300 calories. This could develop in to a hobby for all the family or you could have the next undiscovered Frankie Dettori amongst your brood. A visit to one of the many working farms in the area that are open to the public will give the whole family the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals. Most working farms have lots of free space for the children to enjoy the outdoors with tractor rides and play areas and its a great place to take a picnic. Parents can sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine whilst the children play. Most farms also cater for rainy days with undercover play areas and activities. When planning your trip you should visit the farms website as this may give you an idea of upcoming events that you may want to plan your day trip around.

Why not take the children to one of the many historic places in the local area, some children may not see the fun in visiting these places but why not make the visit more interesting for the kids by devising your own quiz sheet after a quick bit of research on the internet, it could be something that they can take back to school in September to WOW their new teacher with.

To get the adrenaline pumping there are plenty of theme parks to visit or you could consider Go-Karting, Paint Balling or Laser Combat. Its best to to check beforehand on any age or height restrictions that may be in place for any of these activities to avoid any disappointment from your little ones.

With the majority of us feeling ‘the pinch’ at the moment its a good idea to have some plans for some ‘budget’ days out to fi ll the long Summer break. How about a bike ride along the nearest cycle path, a walk in the local countryside or forest trail, a trip to the local swimming pool, a game of football or Frisbee in the local park or if the weather predictions from the Met Offi ce are correct load the car up with a picnic, bucket and spades and shoot off to one of the 17 blue fl ag beaches in the South West, although enough money for ice creams will be essential!

Beach games are a great way to pass the time when spending the day at the beach.

Whether you are playing a game for one or two, or for a whole team, there is something here for

everyone, even the big children at heart. The whole family is encouraged to get involved

and create fun beach games.BEACH GAMES

Combine this with building sand castles and collecting shells, not to mention, playing in the water and you’re sure to have a memorable day with the children wanting to come back for more.

NAUGHTS AND CROSSESDraw a grid in the sand; make it three squares by three squares.Person A uses Naught to mark their spotPerson B uses Crosses to mark their spotEach player takes it in turns until someone gets three in a row. It does not matter if it’s from side to side or up or down. You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every game you win, or simply make it the best of three.

SAND MEMORY GAMEYou need two people to play this game.Person A creates a grid in the sand, it’s up to you how big you make it, and we recommend perhaps four squares by four squares. Then person A, using shells has to create a random pattern by putting the shells in several squares.Person A should allow person B a minute to look at the grid pattern and then cover it with a beach towel. Person B then has to draw their own grid and see if they can remember the layout of person A’s grid. You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every time you get it right, or simply make it the best of three.

WATER BALLOON GAMERegardless of how many kids there are fi ll up a water balloon with water and play pass the balloon, picking people randomly to pass it to, however don’t pass throw it high and call out their name, then it’s up to them to catch it. When and if it’s dropped, just fi ll up another balloon and start again.

BEACH BOWLING GAMEThere are two different ways to play this game. You can either make 10 pins by fi lling up a cup with wet sand and then turn it upside down to make a pin (just like you would make a sand castle).Or if you prefer you can dig a hole for the pins, allowing the ball to roll into the holes.Either way you put one in the fi rst row, two in the second row and so on until you have ten pins.Draw a line in the sand and get each person to have two turns at rolling a ball toward the pins, re-creating the pins each time. The person who knocks over the most pins, wins, or alternatively the person gets the ball in the highest scoring hole wins (with each hole being worth a different amount).

BEACH OLYMPICSDepending on the number of kids you have with you at the beach, you could break them up into teams. Then create a list of events, with teams scoring points for each win. The winning team should have a prize. Some events you could have included:Three legged race – tie two kids together by the ankles, encouraging them to coordinate their movements to run. Whichever team makes it to the end fi rst wins.Long Jump – Draw a line in the sand. Have each kid run up to the line and jump. Whoever jumps the longest distance wins.Hurdles – Lay a number of items in the sand, twigs, spades, whatever you have handy. Get each child to hop the course, hoping over the items. The kid to do it in the fastest time wins.

PETS

CORNERHi my name is Gerry the guinea Pig,

I am a crested guinea pig, this is a short-haired guinea pig which has a crest on its forehead. The crest can either be white or the same colour as the body if it is a self-Coloured guinea pig.I love being cuddled by my owner but it did take me a little while to settle in to my new home. My owner gives me a cuddle every day when she comes home from school and she chats to me too.I share my home with my friends Norman and Louise. We like to be with other guinea pigs and so we enjoy each other’s company. We are unable to make our own Vitamin C so our owners have to make sure that we get this in our food. We stay healthy by eating food that is specifi cally designed for guinea pigs. We also enjoy a variety of fresh vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and cabbage s well as lettuce or apple too. It is important that we get fresh water every day and that we also have grass, hay and clean bedding to keep us well. We make very loving pets and I am sure you will make a great owner for one us.
