Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”: Through the Looking Glass

The famous 1951 Disney version of “Alice in Wonderland” depicts a tale of a young girl named Alice who followed a rabbit down its hole and into a strange new world called “Wonderland”. In contrast, Tim Burton’s version is closer to the original story written by Lewis Carroll. In Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, Alice is a nineteen year old woman about to be married and have her whole life change, instead of a child who in the end walked home with her older sister as the Disney version portrayed. Her short attention span and knack for the fantastical sends her running after the infamous rabbit once again and down the rabbit hole into a world known as “Underland”. She is greeted by Tweedledee, Tweedledum, and Dormouse, who take her to meet Abosolom the blue caterpillar (voiced by Alan Rickman). The debate of whether or not she is the correct Alice to defeat the Jabberwocky – the Queen of Hearts’ beloved evil monster – ensues. The rest of the movie is an outrageous journey for Alice to discover herself and conquer the Red Queen and the Jabberwocky. Favorite characters include Johnny Depp’s performance as the Mad Hatter, but he is always a fan favorite. The silliness of the Tweedle brothers, voiced by Matt Lucas, was also refreshing. Mia Wasikowska’s depiction of Alice was less than impressive, but Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of the White Queen was amusing with her dramatic daintiness. The one actor who particularly stood out from them all was Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen (or the Queen of Hearts). Her performance was filled

with red-hot anger and quick wit, which dominated the rest of the cast. (It’s hard to find someone to scream “Off with their heads!” just right.) The effects that were used in the movie were intriguing, to say the very least, especially the part where Alice fell down the rabbit hole and the items within the hole seem to come straight at you. However, I feel that the film does not need to be in 3D since there were only a few things within the film that actually popped out at the audience. The monstrous creatures and the red metal army of cards were interesting (they looked very different from the card army from the Disney version of “Alice”) as was the White Queen’s army of chess pieces. My favorite visual aspect of the movie is the costuming. The number of times Alice’s dress changed was lost on me, but I liked most of the costume designs, especially the steampunk-influenced outfits of Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. Tim Burton has definitely delivered an enjoyable film. Even though some may be disappointed that it is more of a sequel to Disney’s version, the movie is still captivating and can certainly stand on its own. Though I do not call myself an avid fan of Burton’s work, the experience of watching this film has rendered me speechless.

Ocarina of Rhyme - A special dedication to all the gamers out there. Rather than relying on classic rock-oriented music as a backing, this album utilized a variety of music from the N64 classic Ocarina of Time as its jumping off point for hip hop beats.

ALBUMNo6

Jaydiohead - This combination of Jay-Z's vocals with both well known and more obscure Radiohead tracks makes for an enjoyable and fresh experience.

ALBUMNo5

Sgt. Petsound's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The classics of the late 60s and all time, The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds come together to create this psychedelic trip hinted at in later works by the bands like Revolution 9. Some effects even bring Mario Brothers tunes into the mix.

ALBUMNo4

American Edit - Whether you loved or hated Green Day's American Idiot, the creators of this mashup album, under the alias Dean Gray, made a thoroughly enjoyable work stemming from Green Day's original, and incorporating sources as disparate as Johnny Cash, George Bush, Ray Charles, Kanye West, Oasis, and the Dr. Who Theme. You'll likely be coming back to this one.

ALBUMNo3

A Night At The Hip Hopera - The Kleptones is arguably one of the best mashup/remix artists out there in terms of creating an enjoyable and cohesive work. Drawing from Queen's enormous catalogue and samples ranging from De La Soul to Justin Timberlake to the Beastie Boys to Ferris Bueller to Neon Genesis Evangelion, this amazing album grabs you and doesn't let go until it ends.

ALBUMNo2

The Beatles Never Broke Up - I admit personal bias on this one. Even without being a fan of all things Beatles, this is a fun bunch of mashups of the four's solo work (with a ridiculous story to go along with it), exploring the concept of the music the Fab Four would have made had they not broken up.

The SFU Surrey campus holds an Open House event in early March annually. All of the programs that call Surrey home get a chance to show off their projects and what makes them exciting. It is also an opportunity for SFU applicants, or possible applicants, to get an up-close view of the campus, and what SFU Surrey has to offer.

Relive some of the sights of Open House 2010 through the articulate photography of Clariss Chua, a senior-level SIAT student and HIASPIRE design team alumnus.

of the DecadeLooking back on the last decade, one struggles to figure out the 00s defining musical identity. Clearly we have autotune and the slow rise of "indie rock", but overwhelmingly, the dominant aspect seems to be the mashup and/or remix. In honour of this recognition, I present to you a sampling of some of the better (in my humble opinion) and comparatively accessible/easy-to-find mashup albums of the decade.

T   p

ALBUMNo

Jay Zeezer - A simple concept, this album utilized Weezer's self-titled debut as a backing for a cappella mixes with Jay-Z's Black Album. Weezer's tendency to have lyrics such as: "What's with these homes dissing my girl?" almost sounds like a natural combination at times.

RainyDayz - AmpLive took Radiohead's In Rainbows and produced a track by track mashup with a variety of hip hop vocals. A fun listen.

ALBUMNo9

Grey Album - One of the most influential mashup albums of all time, DJ Dangermouse arguably made a name for himself with this brilliantly named combination of The Beatles White Album and Jay-Z's Black Album. Legal disputes erupted on an enormous scale, but the quality and creativity of this mix dictates it will live on, no matter how underground.

ALBUMNo8

Mashup Albums

Feed The Animals - Girl Talk's most recent album. His music arises from combining and tweaking an astronomical number of samples from all sorts of genre sources. Any of his albums could fit on this list, but I consider this to be the most refined.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of speculative fiction that is set in a world where steam power is widely used and mechanical technology has advanced to a degree that clearly distinguishes it from any historical era. As a rule, it tends to place style and plot advancement ahead of hard science, and often adopts elements of neo-Victorian style and themes of rebellion. Since only works created after the advent of electrical power are considered to be “true” steampunk, which excludes the novels of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and the other earlier writers who heavily influenced the genre, steampunk works are almost always set outside of the present timeline and can be viewed as alternate possible futures.

Wild Wild West (1999) – dir. Barry SonnenfeldA “science fiction Western action-comedy” featuring sometimes ridiculously advanced steampunk technology and bizarre mechanical inventions. The film follows two unlikely and uncooperative partners who are investigating the disappearance of America’s top scientists.

FilmSherlock Holmes (2009) – dir. Guy RitchieHolmes and Watson investigate a series of murders that are apparently connected to occult rituals, and face off against the supposedly risen-from-the-dead Lord Blackwood. Despite being Sherlock Holmes, the film’s technology and overall atmosphere definitely bring it into steampunk territory, but with slightly harder science than is typical of the genre.

STEAMPUNK101: Portrait of  a timeless genre

Literature:The Difference Engine (1990) – William Gibson and Bruce SterlingThis novel is credited with popularizing the genre amongst science fiction fans. It takes place in an alternate 1955, thirty years after Charles Babbage successfully built a mechanical computer. It follows several characters during the search for some reportedly powerful computer punch cards, and has cyberpunk, dystopian and postmodern elements.

The Golden Compass (Northern Lights) (1995) – Philip PullmanThis fantasy-flavoured steampunk novel is set in a parallel universe where people have incarnate souls in the form of shape-shifting daemons. An 11-year-old journeys north in search of her missing friend and imprisoned father/uncle.

And that’s why the government pigs need to go down.

I’m with your cause, but be careful.

And I could escape from sky prison. But that’s the point of sky prison. It is literally a flying gulag. Where do you go if you escape?

Down.

Okay, maybe I don’t want to go to prison, but still-

Oooh! Printing’s done!

I heard they had a volcano prison.

That doesn’t make sense.

My point is that what you are doing is illegal and if you are not careful, you could find yourself in snow prison.

I don’t want to go to prison. I’m a poster maker, not some sort of revolutionary.

Good.

Though snow prison sounds nice actually. It gets really hot in my room this time of year.

There is no snow prison. I was just making names up to scare you.

Thought so.

Let me just shut down my stuff.

So does this mean that there is no volcano prison?

Awesome.

That wasn’t a lie. Volcano prison exists.

Okay.

Want to head out?

For most people, changing schools can be a daunting prospect, which is how I felt when I transferred to SFU from Douglas College this past September. I am now in my third year, and being a college transfer student has made this change somewhat less intimidating than if I had come here straight from high school. I have found, in the past couple of months that I have been here, that the Surrey campus and university life are quite easy to adapt to.

My first impression of the Surrey campus was that it feels like you are attending meetings in a funky office tower rather than attending class at a university. It’s new and modern and that was refreshing for me, having come from an older school. It isn’t so large that you can get lost easily (which came in handy the first week of classes), but not so small that you feel claustrophobic. I particularly enjoy how there are so many comfortable places to sit and study, and plenty of outlets to charge your laptop too. Finally, the mall on the ground floor is very handy. You can do some shopping between classes, easily pick up something you forgot, and the food court is a nice change from cafeteria food. One of the reasons that I went straight to college instead of university was that I came from a smaller high school and wanted smaller class sizes (not to mention cheaper tuition). I thought it would be less intimidating to start off my post secondary education in a familiar environment. Having gotten used to this over the past couple of years, I became worried when it was time to transfer. Would classes at SFU be so large that I’ll just be a number? Fortunately, these worries were dismissed when I got to the Surrey campus. The classes are large, but not so enormous that you can’t ask a question or talk to the professors after class.

Another worry of mine was that the course workload would be a lot heavier just because SFU is a university. Once again I was pleasantly surprised that it was about the same amount I was given at college. Tutorials were a new concept for me. Before if I needed help, I would see the professor during their office hours and it was more tempting to slack off on the assigned readings. Now I’m finding the tutorials are actually quite useful. They are great for asking the questions you were too intimidated to ask in class, and act as a motivator to do the readings, since there can be assignments in the tutorials. Now I look at them as an extension of class time, and a chance to learn more about the material.

All in all, I’m glad that I transferred to SFU. I feel the Surrey campus is a great learning environment, and everything is so accessible. I’m looking forward to completing my undergrad degree here over the next couple of years.

Spotlight on SFU Clubs

The Illustration and Modeling Club is a Surrey-based student group for those interested in expressing themselves via the visual arts. HIASPIRE talked with Jonathan Morrissey (the Vice President of the IMG Club who drew the awesome comic in this issue) to nd out more about their activities.

Q. How did you become involved with the IMG club?

A. I became involved because I love 2D artwork and wanted to encourage others and myself to practice and discuss illustration. (An example of his work can be seen on pages 15 and 16 of this issue)

Q.What is the objective of the IMG Club?A.To provide a relaxed environment to experiment and discuss illustration and modeling with like minded peers.

Q.What opportunities and resources does the club provide for its members?A. We currently have a little stash of materials ranging from pencils and water colours to acrylic paints for members to play with. We don't have any explicit opportunities as such but we do have the materials and the knowledge (some of us anyways) regarding dierent aspects of illustration and modeling.

Q. What kind of activities does your club host (past and future)?A. Some activities we have done in the past include collaborate drawings on a whiteboard, pin making, materials exploration (markers, water colour, conte, acrylic) and inviting a guest speaker. One future project we have lined up is creating an art book showcasing nished works of members in the IMG club.

Q. When and how often does the club meet?A. The club usually meets once a week at various times depending on the semester.

Q. Does the club's illustrations tend toward certain topics, or is anything fair game?A. Anything is fair game although during certain events, we may have a theme or idea that the illustrations will center around.

Q. Does the club have a website or other outlet that showcases the members' creations?A. At the moment we have an underutilized wiki but that'll change.

Q. How can students nd out more about the IMG club?A. Email the club at [email protected] with your questions, requests and what have you.

ice wine tasting, and a free outdoor ice rink. While the festivities here somewhat paled in comparison to other celebration sites, the O-Zone certainly brought a great deal of pep, foot traffic and commercial activity to a suburban city that is otherwise remarkably conservative and punctuated by contemporary Asian culture.

The O-Zone was Richmond's official celebration site for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which spanned 60 acres from Richmond City Hall to Minoru Park. In addition to the typical amenities (jumbotron, live stage, food, fireworks), the O-Zone featured the Holland Heineken House, a massive Cranberry field with a ferris wheel,

Covering a distance of 170m in about thirty seconds, the free Olympic Zip Line boasted a maximum height of six stories tall, a magnificent view of Robson Square, and a very, very long line-up. To be fair, the view and ride were truly exhilarating. Had the line

been three hours instead of seven and the weather been a little warmer that day, it might have been worth it. As it was, the Zip Line was an experience but not one I would be in a hurry to repeat.

LiveCity Yaletown and Surrey's Holland Park were both plazas of activities with a large focus on musical stage performances in the evenings. There were however, some key differences between the two. While Yaletown had some very impressive corporate presence with the Coca Cola and Panasonic pavilions, that was largely all one had to do to bide their time waiting for whichever band they were seeing later. On the other hand, the Surrey site had a much more relaxed and

family-friendly atmosphere, with activities for children, more open space, a variety of multicultural presentation, busker areas, and PNE-style concession stands. The implementation of a tented stage (with liquor, unlike Yaletown) and an outdoor stage allowed for an even greater diversity of acts and experiences. Overall, both sites were definitely worth a visit, but Surrey's embrace of the party mood definitely created more draw to encourage return visits.

Although Burnaby was mostly just a transit hub during the games, its residents were as eager to cheer on Team Canada as those of the downtown core. The torch's trek through Burnaby was met with enthusiastic crowds. Fans gathered in bars, restaurants and living rooms to watch televised events, or took transit to Olympic venues. Canadian flags were displayed on windows or worn around shoulders. And, in North

Burnaby, a guy walked around honking an air horn and shouting the news whenever a Canadian won a gold medal. And for hours after the Canadian men won hockey gold, you might have mistaken the scene on HastingsÑthe loud honking and shouting, and the flag-clad, cheering pedestriansÑfor an actual parade, except that everyone was moving in different directions.

JOY OF THE OLD SCHOOL

I recently purchased MegaMan 9 the latest game in that series. If you were to see the game without knowing about it, you may think it was for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. In fact, it is a downloadable game for all the latest consoles, and an interesting perspective on gaming as a whole.

Over the last decade, video gameshave become more widespread, andmany developers have chosen to focuson accessibility and shininess, while sacrificing depth, challenge, and lasting fun. Now it is definitely possible to have all of these, but it takes a lot of effort, and many developers seem to believe that challenge will destroy sales, or that people will not find any form of challenge enjoyable.

As for Capcom, they decided to gothe opposite way with Mega Man 9.The game itself is at least as hard asthe classic Mega Man games, andpreserves many of the graphics aswell. While the NES-style graphics andsound are a nice nod to nostalgia, theimportant thing is the challenge. MegaMan 9 is designed to be hard, and it is. The result comes from a simplecombination of Mega Man's limitedaction controls — move, jump, and fire horizontally — and level designs that require extremely precise and strategic maneuvering to avoid death.

However, this is not to say thatthe game's difficulty is artificial, or that it is the consequence of bad design. The challenges, deathtraps, and enemies are introduced gradually and without suddenness. You don't have to memorize the level layouts to win, but you have to learn quickly how to deal with what you see. In short, the game is hard, but is designed well.

I point out the design because Ihave heard many arguments thatold games were hard because they had various ways to kill you without warning, and had to be memorized to beat. While it is true that many old games were poorly designed, and modern game design principles do lend themselves to a more measured pace of learning, as Mega Man 9 shows, this does not mean they cannot be challenging.

The other important aspect of this is the idea that challenge isn't fun. While Mega Man 9 did feel annoying at first, I realized as I was progressing through the game that it was not that the game was built wrong; there really was not any surprises killing me. It was that I had become conditioned to expect games to just hand victories to me, and I was getting frustrated because a level took me more than one try.

Once I understood that, I became more able to enjoy the game and I learned to enjoy my hard-won progression. The fact that it was achallenge to get through any level made getting through every level feel like a great, confidence-boosting accomplishment, and that was the best sort of fun.

Overall, the big misconception is thatgames need to hold the player's hands andkeep them from facing anything difficult.Unfortunately, many gamers now expectthis and look over any truly challenginggame, not realizing that instead of demandingthat the game lower its difficulty level, they need to improve their own skill if theywant to do well. The alternative is gamesthat demand increasingly less of the playerwhile becoming glorified movies, whichwould not be really fun for anyone.
