THIS MONTH’S silver starJEANNE STRAUSS
Our July Silver Star is Jeanne Strauss. Jeanne was born in Wilmington, Del., and was raised in Philadelphia. She has a brother and a sister. Her sister was a professional dancer. After high school, she enlisted into the Navy. For almost three years, she was a storekeeper second class. She was stationed in Norfolk, Va. Jeanne met her husband, John, onboard ship in Maui. They married in San Francisco after a year of corresponding. John was from Milwaukee, so they moved to back to Wisconsin. They have two children, a boy and a girl, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Jeanne worked at the Public Buildings Administration as a switchboard operator. John worked for the Milwaukee Police Department. They were married for 58 years. They traveled around the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, California and New York, the state not the city, but never out of the country. Jeanne loved to entertain and was a very good cook. She loved to put on a pretty table and serve good food. Cooking was her very favorite thing to do. She also loved to dance and won quite a lot of contests. She plays the piano, knits quite a bit, along with sweaters for the babies, and she likes sports, ice hockey for one. Her favorite food is ice cream. Her favorite TV show was General Hospital, and her favorite color is blue. We are glad to have you here with us at Hickory Park, Jeanne.
WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO
cupcake monthIn honor of cupcake month, we will be baking four different cupcakes, one each week, so stop by to lend a hand. With the Longest Day behind us, we continue to look for donations. We will be holding a fundraiser of brat and burger meals and are looking for volunteers to help that day. We are also planning a Music Under the Stars concert at the end of the month, residents only for now; we will keep you posted on any new updates.

RECAP: HOW WE STAYED CONNECTED THIS MONTH
look what we are doingWe were so happy to get in some small group activities last month. We did some card making and button crafts, bingo resumed and we have our first six monarch caterpillars, let’s watch them grow.
THIS MONTH’S heart heroHOSPITALITY, EXCELLENCE, APPRECIATION, RESPECT, TEAMWORK
To be chosen for HEART Hero, Associates must demonstrate the values HEART stands for: Hospitality, Excellence, Appreciation, Respect and Teamwork. With these values in mind, we have chosen KATIE OLSON, our new Health and Wellness Director. Katie has been with Senior Lifestyle for a year and at Hickory Park for four months. Katie was born and raised in Eagle, Wisc. She has two sisters and has been married for two years. They have three cats and a dog. Katie started in the healthcare industry in 2012 and attended WCTC to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. In her spare time, she loves to go to the dog park, shop, play tennis and wants to take classes to learn to bow hunt. For her honeymoon, she and her husband went to Granada. They also travel to Minoqua, where her uncle has a resort. Katie’s favorite part of working here is that she gets to see the best and worst of the residents when it comes to their health. It’s such a rewarding and humbling experience to help the residents lead healthy lives, and she also loves to hear their stories. Katie’s favorite food is her dad’s spaghetti and meatballs, favorite restaurant is That’s Amore, favorite movie is “The Day After Tomorrow,” favorite TV shows are “Friends,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “The Office,” and favorite color is aqua. We are so happy to have her join our team.

SALON
TUESDAY & FRIDAY 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
IT’S OUR PLEASURE TO SERVE YOU … word from your leadership teamGOOD OLE SUMMERTIME!
There is a 1975 Chevy ad that always makes me think of July. You may remember it, “Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie & Chevrolet.” July is a feel good month, and I hope you have the opportunity to sit on our patio, visit the fountain and stop to smell the flowers every once in a while. James was kind enough to set up the raised garden beds by the front entrance. Take a look! Although this spring may not have been what we planned for, summer’s natural optimism should be taken advantage of. We are incredibly fortunate for our collective good health. I hope the same is true for your friends and family.
