HIDDEN FORESTHOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION
NEWSLETTERMAY 2018
Published by Neighborhood News, Inc.
Summer activities have already started in Hidden Forest, hard to believe isn’t it?!? Swim Team will be in full swing very soon. They had their Polar Swim on April 22rd and as always, it was a great success.
We are happy to have the new sidewalk finished for the pool season. This will not only make it easier for those with wheelchairs and walkers, but also for strollers and wagons headed into the pool. We are happy to finally have this amenity finished for the community.
Our Easter Egg Hunt took place on March 25th and it was a beautiful day with a great turnout. Thank you to Amanda Conine and her committee for coordinating the event and making this another successful day for the kids. We are always looking for more help with our social committee! Many hands make light work and I know Amanda would love more hands! Garage sale days are also behind us. We were happy to provide this for the neighborhood and hope that those who participated made a pretty penny and found some new treasures.
On a more serious note, I would like to ask everyone in Hidden Forest to please abide by the posted 30 mph speed limit. Also, please come to a complete stop at the 4 way stop sign at Partridge Trail and Sugar Pine. As summer draws near, we will have Swim Team using the pool every day and we will have

Hidden Forest NEWSLETTER May 2018
Garden Club NewsMAY 2018
The Garden Club met in April at the clubhouse for a demonstration on making herb container gardens. Each participant brought a container and went home with their herb garden planted and ready to grow. The club members also toured Miss Margaret’s house in the King William District during Fiesta. The next meeting will be the installation of new officers on May 9th at the Silo Restaurant.
If you’re interested in learning more about the Garden Club, or attending a meeting, please contact Toni Dunn at 210-494-9962 or Susan Hawthorne at 210-495-1921. It’s a good way to meet some new friends and learn gardening tips. Everyone is welcome!
HOW TO ATTRACT HUMMINGBIRDS TO YOUR YARDHummingbirds will make their home any place they can find a good source of food, water and shelter. Their small size and acrobatic flying maneuvers make them fun and entertaining to watch. Here are a few tips for enticing hummingbirds to visit your yard:
• Plant flowers and shrubs that they like such as: bee balms, fairy trumpets, desert honeysuckle, cypress vine, coral bells, impatiens, geraniums, petunias, lantana, and begonias. Plant on a continuous blooming schedule.
• Do not use pesticides around your hummingbird plants or feeders.• Hang multiple feeders with red on them or attach red ribbon to get
their attention. You may even want to hang them in different areas of your yard so that the hummers cannot see the other feeders since they have a tendency to be territorial and run off other hummers.
• Make your own nectar of 4 parts water to one part sugar. (Do not use honey, artificial sweetener or red food coloring.) Boil 1-2 minutes to dissolve the sugar. Fill feeders about half full and store the remainder in the refrigerator.
• Change the nectar every 3 – 4 days. The hummers prefer clean feeders. Use only hot water and a brush to clean the feeders before refilling.
• Sit back and enjoy these magnificent birds!
Advice from a hummingbird: Sip the sweet moments. Let your true colors glow. Don’t get your feathers ruffled over little things. Take yourself lightly.
Good things come in small packages.
MAY YARD OF THE MONTHSpring is in the air! Yards are coming to life with new blooms and green grass. We are happy to award the yard of the month for May to Joe and Stacy Heston at 15719 Wolf Creek.
They have worked hard putting new mulch around a large variety of plants, to include bottle brush, red salvia, Mexican petunias, Japanese Petaluma, large palms, day lilies, plumbago, sweet willie, blooming aloe, boxwood, and Mexican heather just to name a few.
There are two large oaks and an olive tree in the front yard, and two Montezuma cypress along the curved driveway.
Congratulations on a beautiful yard!

OAK WILT AND TREE TRIMMINGThe BexarMet Efficiency coordinator has issued some advice concerning trees. The beetle that carries Oak Wilt is most active from February through June, so it is imperative to avoid trimming trees during these months. To prevent the spread of oak wilt, July and August are good pruning months. Always Paint all wounds even though the chance of spreading the disease is low when temperatures reach 90 degrees F. Oak Wilt has been reported to be affecting oak trees in Hollywood Park. Let’s do our part to keep this disease from attacking our beautiful oak trees.

Hidden Forest NEWSLETTERMay 2018
Learn the action steps you can take for safeguarding children in and around the water.
SUPERVISIONCuriosity, rapidly changing skills, and an inability to understand danger place young children at high risk. Adults must establish and communicate responsibility for child supervision.
• Assign an adult "water watcher" to supervise the pool/spa area, especially during social gatherings.
• Assign a second adult to maintain constant visual contact with children in the pool/spa area. Don't assume someone else is watching a child.
• Never leave a child alone near a pool or spa, bathtub, toilet, water-filled bucket, pond, or any standing water in which a child's nose and mouth may be submersed.
• Don't rely on swimming lessons, life preservers, or any other equipment to make a child "water safe".
• Don't allow children to play in the pool/spa area.• Look in the pool area first if a child is missing.• Communicate pool safety measures with the baby-sitter
and train the sitter in CPR.
POOL SAFETY/DROWNING PREVENTIONPREPARATION• Learn how to swim, proper rescue
techniques and CPR.• Mount rescue equipment by the pool. This should include a
lifesaving ring, shepherd’s hook, and CPR sign. Many float-type toys like arm floats and inflatable rings are thought to be lifesavers. They aren’t. They are only toys and should be used only as toys.
• Post the 9-1-1 emergency phone number on your phones. Have a phone near the pool area. Don’t leave children unattended while talking on the phone.
Important Facts About Childhood Drowning• Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children
under five years of age in 18 states, and California leads the nation.
• A pool or spa is 14 times more likely than a vehicle to cause the death of a child under five.
• Drowning is a silent event. Children under five do not understand the dangers of falling into water and do not splash or cry out for help.
• Children can drown during surprisingly short breaks in visual contact.

Hidden Forest NEWSLETTERMay 2018
Lawn 101By Mark Peterson, SAWS Conservation Project Coordinator
Follow these straightforward tips and you should have a healthy green lawn that uses minimal water.
1. Select the correct grass typeAbandon the idea that you can have any grass species you want. The amount of sunlight determines your species. Ten hours or more of direct sunlight dictates Bermuda grass. Less than ten hours and you’re limited to zoysia and St. Augustine. If you have less than five hours of direct sunlight, then forget about a lawn. It’s not going to happen.
2. Mow weeklySelect at least one day a week as your mowing day and stick to it. Mowing weekly improves grass health and reduces weeds. Also, always mow high — 3 inches for St. Augustine, 2 inches for zoysia and 1 ½ inches for Bermuda grass.
3. Compost and aerateThis is the second most important activity you can do for your lawn. Of the two, composting is the most important and should be done twice a year. Aeration can be done once or even every other year. Both increase the soil’s ability to absorb water and
oxygen, each crucial for strong root development. Strong roots means less need for nutrients and water.
4. Leave the clippings on the lawnGrass is a “heavy feeder,” meaning it requires more nutrients than other plants. Leaving the clippings and adding compost in spring and fall eliminates the need for additional fertilizer most of the time. If the blades are not growing or are light green in color, then additional fertilizer may be needed. Apply only after April 15 and before November 1.
5. WaterOf course, I’m going to encourage you to cut back on water. And by following all the aforementioned rules, you can dramatically reduce water usage to no more than once a week. The most important times of the year to water are spring and fall. Plants in South Texas are adapted to grow in spring and fall, not summer. Help them with their natural tendencies.
No need for complex chemicals or chants. Select, mow, compost and water are all it takes to maintain a healthy, green lawn.
