waltham, mA - hobbs Brook management llc, a pioneer in the devel-opment of office space in the Boston sub-urbs has donated $200,000 worth of office furniture and equipment to six YmcAs within the greater Boston network.

After a tenant vacated an entire build-ing in waltham, hobbs Brook donated desks, chairs, cafeteria furniture, pictures, conference room furniture and AV equip-ment to the YmcA of greater Boston rather than have the equipment disposed of or sold at a fraction of its value. Through this do-

nation, Y’s in waltham, East Boston, hyde park, Brighton, west Roxbury, and Need-ham were able to significantly improve back office operations as well as obtain audio-vi-sual equipment to further enhance program-ming for families and teens.

“The YmcA of greater Boston is grateful to Tom Dusel and hobbs Brook management for this in-kind donation of furniture and equipment valued at over $200,000,” said Kevin Washington, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater Boston.

At our recent meeting, Dan Antonel-lis, who has been promoted to be Northeast team’s Vp of marketing & communica-tions for Suffolk construction, alluded to an important news announcement Suffolk would be making shortly.

A week or so later we received a news release that Suffolk’s Berry Division would manage the $100 million expansion of the

maine medical center. Berry has managed much of the preconstruction and subsequent work of MMC’s prior five-stage expansion.

we have noticed an upturn in the number of new projects, restarts, and rehire stories we’ve received lately and there

appear to be more on the way. here’s one…….The Boston Redevelopment Author-

ity (BRA) approved the 368 congress Street project, which will transform an existing underutilized building in the fort point channel neighborhood into a 120-room extended stay hotel with two ground floor retail/restaurant spaces. The existing six-story structure is known as the “Still-ings Building” and was built in 1901. The project was previously approved in 2007 as an office and ground-floor retail project.

Total project cost is estimated at $45 million, and restoration work is expected to begin in April 2011.

The development team consists of Norwich partners of Boston, llc as the proponent; colliers meredith & grew as the development manager; group one partners, Inc. as the project architect; mc-carter & English and Brennan, Dain, le Ray, wiest, Torpy & garner as legal coun-sel; howard Stein hudson as transportation consultants; and lee Kennedy & company as construction managers.

The BRA also approved the 800 hun-tington Avenue project which will renovate and expand the existing building to accom-modate a new state-of-the-art medical of-fice building with an outpatient medical clinic to be operated by the massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Total project cost is estimated at $60 million, with a construction startup in the first quarter of 2011. The development team includes The Beal companies, llp, as the owner/developer; Tsoi/Kobus & Associates as the project architect; gEI consultants Inc. as the geotechnical and environmen-

tal engineer; harry R. feldman, Inc. as the surveyor and howard/Stein-hudson Asso-ciates, Inc. as the transportation engineer.

And here’s another:…. The BRA approved the 100 Arling-

ton Street project, which will transform an existing building into a 128-unit residen-tial building in Bay Village. No signifi-cant changes to the exterior of the existing building will occur. In addition to the rental residential units, the project includes ap-proximately 10,250sf of retail space along Arlington and Stuart Streets.

The development team includes The congress group, Inc. as developer; Elkus/manfredi Architects as project architect.

Total project cost is estimated at $65 million. construction is expected to start in spring 2011.

Also in the news:mayor Thomas m. menino joined

governor Deval patrick recently to break ground on the $13.5 million Yawkey com-muter Rail Station reconstruction project, a key public transportation component of the $450 million fenway center develop-ment. Separately, the new station signifies the beginning of the larger fenway center project, which will significantly transform the public realm between Kenmore Square, fenway, and the Audubon circle with the creation of a number of new amenities including retail space, housing, and new green space.

According to the Boston Business Journal, Boylston properties has asked the Boston Redevelopment Authority for per-mission to scratch its initial plans to build a research and office facility in the heart of the city’s fenway neighborhood and instead put up a “limited service/extended stay” 183-room hotel.

The Boston-based developer said changes in tenant demands — office and lab space is down, hotel properties are up — prompted its decision to seek BRA ap-proval to revise its plans. The new hotel, as planned, would be eight stories in height.

Boylston has retained group one partners Inc. as the project’s architect and John moriarty & Associates as its general contractor

we would like to hear from you to help us forecast the coming year. Share your insight with us on what’s new and what’s the same within your niche in the industry. By presenting an array of various articles, a general forecast will emerge on what to expect in 2011.

Next year we plan to move the fore-cast issue to December. The Year In Re-view will be published in January.

portland, mE - Berry, a divi-sion of Suffolk construction, has been named construction manager for maine medical center’s (mmc) Stra-tegic master facility plan phase Two. The construction management team will work with hospital officials and the architect to revise and update the next phase of mmc’s long-term plan, which concentrates on the Bramhall campus in portland, mmc’s largest facility.

The architect on the project is perkins+will.

The project team will also iden-tify facility needs for inpatient medical and surgical care and interventional services and determine the appropriate capacity, size, facility, and infrastruc-

ture requirements for providing these core clinical services. The hospital expects to complete this evaluation process this fall. The plan is expected to involve more than $100 million in construction.

“we are delighted that maine medical center has chosen us to help with its strategic, 10-year master plan,” said peter campot, president of Suf-folk’s Berry Division. “we oversaw preconstruction and construction of MMC’s five-phase expansion, which included the East Tower (home of the new women and Infants center), an expanded emergency department and radiology department, and new park-ing structure, helipad and central util-ity plant,” he said.

winchester, mA - A.J. martini, Inc. and more than 100 participants gath-ered recently to celebrate the topping off of winchester hospital’s center for cancer care at 620 washington Street in Winchester. The placing of the final steel beam was met with cheers from the crowd of winchester hospital board members, medical staff, administrators, employees, volunteers, and donors. lo-cal town officials and residents also at-tended the event.

opening in the summer of 2011, the project will expand the existing cancer care facility to create a 60,000sf comprehensive center for cancer care.

The center was designed by Stef-fian Bradley Architects and will bring together clinical staff from three sites into one location.

Designed for LEED Gold certifica-tion for commercial interiors, the new cen-ter will provide a state-of-the-art facility with the utmost in patient privacy, comfort, and convenience. This is the first phase of a larger $50 million project that includes an ambulatory surgery center and enhance-ments at the hospital’s main campus locat-ed at 41 highland Ave.

“To say that all of us here today are

thrilled to celebrate this significant mile-stone would be an understatement,” said Kevin Smith, president and chief executive officer of Winchester Hospital.

Bill Aalerud, president of A.J. mar-tini, Inc. construction managers and project executive, said his involvement is personal. In addition to being a longtime hospital vol-unteer, he often accompanied his mother to her treatments at the winchester hospital Radiation oncology center before she lost her battle with complications from breast cancer.

Is there a REAL benefit to BIM for General Contractors?

BIM helps general contractors and builders gain a competitive advantage with:• Better insight into constructability and materials

costs, before a project begins

• Improved coordination and clash detection, leading to fewer errors and change orders

• Enhanced 4D construction scheduling, linking timelines to 3D building model geometry to keep projects on track

methuen, mA - Suffolk construc-tion Company and the architectural firm The S/l/A/m collaborative recently joined with officials of Holy Family Hospital in methuen to celebrate the hospital’s 60th anniversary by topping off the new $21 million emergency center.

The 21,000sf facility nearly doubles the hospital’s capacity to care for emergen-cy patients, providing patients and families from southern New hampshire and the merrimack Valley with greater access to advanced emergency medicine. when the expanded emergency center is completed in 2011, the hospital will be able to accom-

modate 54,000 emergency visits annually. The new, uniquely designed emer-

gency center will be equipped with 34 private treatment bays, including six fast-track rooms; an on-site, cT scanner; and a double trauma room.

caritas healthcare, the owner of holy family, has awarded Suffolk and The S/l/A/m collaborative projects on multiple campuses, including the carney hospital, good Samaritan medical cen-ter, St. Anne’s hospital, and St. Elizabeth’s medical center. Suffolk is partnering with The S/l/A/m collaborative at holy family hospital.

Boston - walsh Brothers, In-corporated was recently awarded the lateral expansion project at children’s hospital Boston (chB). To address a higher volume of pediatric inpatient needs, forecasted population increas-es, demand for single patient rooms, emerging pediatric trends, as well as a need for expanded emergency, sur-gical, and radiology suites, chB se-lected walsh Brothers to manage the construction of this new 110,000sf, 10-story building addition. payette, a longtime partner of walsh Brothers, is the architect for the project.

The new expansion will provide chB with 12 new short-stay bays (23-hour observation), allowing the hospi-tal to better utilize existing beds, and provide for a critical expansion of eight beds for the Emergency Department, as well as increase radiology capacity and additions to surgical areas and associ-ated new inpatient support spaces.

Additionally, the new expansion will allow for as many as 44 single-bed inpa-tient rooms to meet the needs of future sub-specialties.

with only 7,000sf of buildable space at ground level, it was quickly determined by chB that the project would need to be both a lateral and vertical expansion that would begin in the slender ground level footprint and expand vertically, connecting and ultimately expanding the existing eight floors of clinical space.

with the project’s zero lot-line loca-

tion, minimal lay down area, need to join the new construction to the existing active space, and multitude of sensitive institu-tional and neighborhood abutters, this proj-ect presents many complex challenges.

walsh Brothers has already success-fully installed a 20,000 gallon fuel tank to replace the existing one which was located within the footprint of the main building addition. The existing fuel tank will be de-commissioned to ensure the new founda-tion work can commence. walsh Brothers has developed a detailed road map laid out in order to execute the careful construction and join-to-old work strategies that this im-portant project requires.

Lynn, MA - BOND hoisted the fi-nal steel I-beam at a reception to mark the topping-off of the health center on Union Street in lynn. Joining BoND in mark-ing this significant milestone were staff and board members of the lynn commu-nity health center, project architect hDR warner + Associates, local 7 Boston Iron-workers, and a host of other dignitaries and city residents.

The topping off marked the close of the foundation and framework phase of the project, which broke ground this past June.

The health center recently announced that major funding from the federal health care Reform Act has enabled it to nearly double the size of the project by building out a second floor and completing the base-ment. The total expansion is projected to cost $18.8 million. The 29,300sf, two-story expansion will allow the health center to provide comprehensive health care for more than 7,000 new patients, in addition to the more than 33,000 individuals who already rely on it for their care.

BOND hoisted the final steel I-beam ahead of schedule and on pace to complete the project by July 2011.

High-Profile Monthly’s 2010 Year In Review Editor’s note: Construction users, build-ing owners, developers, facilities managers, all must keep an eye to the future when planning a construction project. When selecting the best team to build it, a look into the past to see what has been designed, how it was built and what team accomplished the job as planned, is an indispensable step.

High-Profile’s Year In Review 2010 is by no means a complete list of construction activities in New England, but rather a comprehensive list-ing of headlines from activities reported in High-Profile Monthly in the past year. portsmouth, Nh - A new addi-tion to The provident Bank’s family, the sixth provident Bank designed by TmS Architects, opened for busi-ness in November.

TmS Architects has been working with The provident Bank since 2002 when the firm trans-formed an old friendly’s Restaurant in Newburyport into a branch bank that evoked the area’s rich historic architectural heritage.

generous use of exterior and interior windows fill the interior spaces with abundant light, and a consistent palette of white wood trim, bright colors, and comfortable fur-nishings reinforce the residential character.

The exterior is clearly influenced by New England architecture with details such as arbors, brackets, lattice, columns and shutters used as the basis for the architec-tural palette.

The bank was also able to take ad-vantage of energy-efficient and environ-

mentally friendly features such as recycled and renewable building materials, Energy Star-rated windows, and highly efficient mechanical systems.

In addition to TmS Architects, the design and construction team included Scadd, Inc. of Rye, Jones & Beach Engi-neers of Stratham, and Britton construc-tion of Newbury, mass.

warwick, RI - warwick now has a transportation hub offering one place for travelers to access planes, trains, buses, and automobiles. This intermodal facility opened on octo-ber 27, 2010 and is aptly called IN-TERlINK.

It consists of an improved air-port terminal building connected by a 1,200-foot skywalk to a six-level multifunctional parking garage. making the T.f. green Airport more than just an airport, it is a central sta-tion where travelers go for a variety of transportation choices.

The six level garage is the essential key to integrating all the other modes of transportation. At just over a million sf with 3,200 parking spaces, it houses all rental car operations including vacuuming and car wash bays and the first elevated fueling platforms in the country. car rental parking has 1,800 spaces and 800 spaces for commuters.

The train runs through the ground floor of the parking structure incorporating a precast concrete platform that is integrat-ed into the building. The garage includes access to buses for the Rhode Island Trans-portation Authority.

connecting the airport to the garage is a 35 foot high skywalk that is totally en-closed with both a walkway and moving sidewalks.

last but not least is the space allotted for “Kiss and Ride,” short-term parking for

commuter pick-up and drop-off. This multifunction garage accommo-

dates all the essential needs of the traveler in one well thought out structure. on top of its functionality, it is energy efficient and green. Recycled construction materials were used including steel, aluminum, and fly ash in the precast concrete.

High-Profile: Associated Builders and Contractors EICA Awards

by Kyle Reagan and Greg BeemanEven during the toughest of eco-

nomic times, the members of ABc massa-chusetts constantly strive for excellence in

all they do. for our companies, excellence is not just an end goal; pursuing it every day is a way of life, as is exemplified by this year’s Excellence in cons t ruc t ion Award (EIcA) winners.

we are proud to have 13 award winning projects that demonstrate the diversity, versatility, and craftsmanship of the merit shop con-tractors that make up our association. from public safety facilities, to veterinary isola-tion wards, to wind turbines atop mount wachusett, this year’s award-winning proj-

ects represent a wide spectrum of construc-tion excellence.

In an effort to recognize emerging talent in the area of sustainable construc-tion, ABc will also be presenting three “ABC Green Awards” for the second year in a row to project teams who delivered ex-pert craftsmanship that was also environ-mentally friendly and energy efficient.

Despite the fact that the construction marketplace is not as strong as we would like it, it is incumbent on our industry to take a moment to stop and recognize the great work being done by the men and women of the merit shop community. posters of this year’s award-winning projects were displayed in the Design gallery during the Build Boston exhibit at the Seaport world Trade center. we hope you took a moment to stop by to learn more about these projects as part of your Build Boston experience.

fall River, mA - The Bourne mill, once the largest cotton mill in the world, has been transformed into 166 mixed in-come housing units which are 95% occu-pied after years of neglect. This remarkable conversion project encompassed 186,808sf within seven different buildings, compris-ing a total project value of $29 million and a project duration of 16 months.

“In a society that so quickly disre-gards the old to make way for the latest and greatest fads, it is exciting to be involved with bringing back one of our area’s elder statesmen that provided employment for so many in the region,” said Mike Fish, presi-dent of Dellbrook construction. “It is es-pecially gratifying to now give the Bourne

mill its well-deserved care that we strongly feel increases the character of the commu-nities in which it stands.”

Dellbrook construction recently won an Eagle and green Award in the ABc “Excellence in Construction Award” com-petition. This was one of the first LEED certifiable mill conversion projects in the country.

“Innovations included Dellbrook devising methods to test the old-growth long-leaf yellow pine beams that were previously in place,” commented the ABC judges, “An array of innovative solutions were utilized to analyze and restore this once crumbling structure.” Because certain components of the

structure were rotted, there was extensive testing to determine the structural integrity of the timber beams throughout the mill. Through the experience of renovating 10 to 12 mill buildings, the professionals of Dellbrook had developed unique hands-on knowledge of the structural soundness of the old-growth long-leaf yellow pine beams and had a differing opinion of the amount of beams that could be salvaged to retain its historic composition without compromising the structural integrity of the buildings.

“Dellbrook devised an innovative method of performing load tests which were conducted in accordance with the building code by loading beams with 55,000 lbs, then measuring the deflection and rebound of each,” stated Tom Reed, EA Fish VP of field operations. “These tests were con-

ducted with the cmU blocks which were later used to construct the elevator shafts in the buildings. This exercise resulted in the savings of $600,000 and a victory of real world construction over theoretical engi-neering concepts.”

“What first attracted my father to Bourne mill is that it has an amazing wa-terfront location next to cook pond, the property is right on the massachusetts-Rhode Island border with portions in both fall River, massachusetts and Tiverton, Rhode Island,” continued Fish. “With mills, he generally looked for good bones or structural integrity, interesting indus-trial aesthetics, and historical architectural features that translate to interesting living spaces – and in Bourne mill he found all of these features.”

High-Profile Feature: Homewood Suites Hotel

canton mA - Timberline construc-tion, with offices in Canton, is the general contractor for a 98-room

homewood Suites hotel being built in canton. This four-story, 80,000sf hotel project is located at 50 Royall Street, just off exit 2B on Route 93 north. Situated on 2.3 acres, this project is under construction with a completion date scheduled for June 2011.

A project of this size is a hopeful sign that the economy is starting to swing toward a recovery from the downturn that has affected the construction sector very hard over the past three years. Timberline construction performs much of the site-work and carpentry using local labor. The majority of subcontractors are from the greater Boston area.

The suite concept for hotel design is gaining in popularity with business travel-ers and families visiting the area. There are a combination of studio, one- and two-bed-room units, each with a kitchen. There is an indoor swimming pool, spa, and exercise room that is very popular with guests. The canton location makes it easy to visit vaca-tion destinations in both the city of Boston, the seacoast, or the mountains to the west and north.

Six units located on the first and sec-ond floors have handicap accessible bath-rooms, and many of the units have access to adjoining rooms to accommodate very large families or groups visiting the area.

There is a centrally located laundry room on the first floor as well as a very comfort-able sitting area with gas fired fireplaces that afford the homestyle amenities that families are seeking. An executive center with computer work stations and confer-ence capability are also located on the first floor that is a plus for the business travelers to our area.

The exterior is a combination of brick accents, hardy plank siding, and E.F.I.S. (exterior finish and insulation sys-

tem) around windows and parapets. This design gives the feel of a high-end resi-dential complex rather than the usual hotel model.

A gabled roof with architectural as-phalt shingles continues to enhance the homestyle look. The front entry is accent-ed by large columns that also bring a very welcoming feel to the structure.

Ron Kendall, president of Buffalo lodging Associates that owns and operates 38 hotels throughout the Northeast and in florida, said, “This will be the seventh homewood Suites in our portfolio. The hotel is designed for upscale extended stay guests who anticipate being in the area on assignment for several days, weeks, or months and the hotel provides a breakfast buffet and social hour for patrons.”

Archetype Architects of portland, maine is the architect. partner Bill hop-kins worked as the partner-in-charge for the homewood Suites, and associate ar-chitect Kevin gough serves as the project architect.

Timberline construction is a full service general contractor and construc-tion management firm located in Canton. It has a varied portfolio that includes work in sectors that include retail establishments, restaurants, wireless telecommunications installations, commercial, healthcare, higher education, and hospitality.

Timberline construction began op-erations in 2002.

Today Timberline construction has gross revenues of $25 million with 85 full-time employees.

Boston - The new, mixed-income wilber School Apartments recently earned national recognition for both sustainable design and historic preservation.

Days after the US green Build-ing council awarded the project a gold certification under the LEED-for-Homes program, the National housing & Reha-bilitation Association (Nh&RA) named it the Best historic Rehabilitation Involving New construction at the 2010 J. Timothy “Timmy” Anderson Awards for Excellence in historic Rehabilitation.

The project’s architect, prellwitz chilinski Associates, and its developers, Beacon communities llc and frontier Enterprises Inc., accepted the award at the Nh&RA’s fall Developers forum event in Boston.

Named for a pioneer in the adaptive reuse of historic structures, the “Timmy Awards” primarily honor rehabilitation projects using federal historic tax credits. A multi-disciplinary, national panel of judges scores projects based on overall design and quality, interpretation and respect of historic elements, innovative construction and building materials, impact on the com-munity, sustainability and market success.

lEED for homes is the preeminent national certification program for homes designed and built to be energy- and re-source-efficient as well as healthy and du-rable for occupants. Among other criteria, wilber School Apartments’ gold-level certification was based on comprehensive home Energy Rating System (hERS) test-ing through the Energy Star program and on-site technical inspections.

Recognition from Nh&RA and USGBC reflects the Wilber team’s com-mitment to sustainable design, historic preservation, and high residential qual-ity in the conversion of a long-shuttered, historically significant community school

into 75 mixed-income apartments. The 105,000sf development program consisted of full rehabilitation of a school originally built in 1922 and the addition of a modern, complementary new wing. Approximately one-third of the apartments are reserved for households making up to 30%, 50% or 100% of the area median income. The apartments’ high design standard, the re-sult of collaboration between pcA and Beacon’s in-house designer, mercedes farrando, has helped the project succeed in the community. Since opening in January, Wilber School Apartments is already 87% leased.

Boston - payette, a leading architectural design firm specializ-ing in complex buildings for academic teaching, medical and scientific re-search, and healthcare, announced that the firm received a 2010 Brick in Architecture Award for its design for the Integrated Sciences Building (ISB) at the University of mas-sachusetts Amherst. The project was recognized as a bronze winner in the educational category.

Drawing upon the material palette from neighboring buildings, the ISB’s brick fa-çades both recognize their context and ex-press a forward-looking spirit, and banding is used as a device to mitigate the scale of a contemporary laboratory building relative to smaller adjacent historic structures.

In keeping with their functions, the laboratory (west) wing’s windows are uniform and precise, while the classroom (north) wing’s irregular window pattern expresses the varied nature of its diverse spaces. The concourse’s curtainwall and terracotta façade celebrates the tectonics of building an energy-friendly, high-perfor-mance façade.

Durability and ease of maintenance is of paramount importance to the University of massachusetts, and it set a construction goal that this project be a “100 year build-ing,” which is met by the longevity and du-rability of brick cavity wall construction.

Beverly, mA - The merrimack Valley planning commission (mVpc) has selected meridian Associ-ates, Inc.to evaluate 11 land-fill sites within nine MVPC member communities for potential development of wind power and ground-mounted solar photovoltaics (pV). The mVpc is seeking to help communities deter-mine the viability of reusing their closed landfills as de-velopment sites for renew-able power generation that could help cut municipal energy costs.

This ground-breaking regional ini-tiative is designed to provide local leaders objective technical expertise, advice, and guidance on the potential for renewable en-ergy projects in their communities.

for each of the nine mVpc com-munities, meridian Associates will pro-vide site, regulatory, and power generation

assessments to determine if any of the landfills have a “fatal flaw” that would pre-clude the development of either wind or pV at the sites.

Based on the results, community leaders will be in a position to make in-formed, “fact-based” decisions about the costs and benefits of investing in renew-able energy projects at their landfills.

Southborough, mA – Erland construction of Burlington recently com-pleted the new 35,000sf primary School build-ing for the fay School in Southborough. As part of this project, Erland also renovated the existing Steward Dormitory into a new wellness center. These two projects make up the second phase of the School’s master plan for construction on campus. The first phase, built by Erland, was completed in the spring of 2009.

The construction included a new wastewater treatment plant, a maintenance building, a new ceremonial entrance to the campus, and two lEED gold village-style faculty/student dormitories.

phase 2 reunited the phase 1 team – Erland Construction, architecture firm S/l/A/m collaborative, and owner’s rep-resentative pinck & co. The new 35,000sf primary School building, which opened this fall, serves pre-kindergarten, kinder-garten, and grades one and two. Both pre-k and kindergarten are new grades for fay, and the building also allows for the expan-sion of the existing grades one and two. The new primary School building will ap-ply for LEED Silver certification.

The first floor of the existing Steward Dormitory was converted to the new well-ness center. To accommodate the wellness center, the students residing in the Steward Dorm were moved into the dorms com-pleted in phase 1. The new 8,500sf well-ness center has upgraded patient rooms, classrooms, and a faculty apartment; a new elevator, clock tower, hardscape, and main entry were also added.

Storrs, cT- Skanska has secured a contract amounting to $41.3 million for a university building in Storrs.

The 14,500sf four-story build-ing, which will include classrooms and lecture halls, will be constructed at the heart of the university campus, thereby placing high demands on logistics and safety.

The client is University of con-necticut. The project is designed to meet the requirements of the lEED Silver level of the lEED international environ-mental certification system. Work will commence this year, and the project is scheduled for completion in July 2012.

struction has announced a partnership with the Andover Area Office of the US De-partment of labor’s occupational Safety and health Administration (oShA) to en-hance worker safety and health during the construction of the $56 million wayland high School expansion and modernization project.

The partnership will allow Shawmut

to provide oShA’s construction safety courses to employees and subcontractors, implement an on-going site safety audit program, and facilitate training on the safe operation of materials handling equip-ment.

The wayland high School expan-sion and modernization project is currently one of two oShA partnerships out of the Andover Area Office.

wayland, mA - hmfh Architects has commenced con-struction on the new wayland high School.

Slated for completion for the 2012 school year, the $56.2 million project includes 160,000sf of new construction and 40,000sf of renovation. KVAssociates is the owner’s project manager, and Shawmut Design and construc-tion is the construction manager at risk (cm-at-Risk) under mas-sachusetts’s new construction statute.

The original wayland high School was designed and built in the early 1960s and widely touted for its modern form – a modular, team-teaching, california-style campus of eight buildings. Thirty years after it opened, selected upgrades such as roof replacement, system repairs and new finishes were made to the facility, but the physical condition and the energy perfor-mance of the school continued to deterio-rate.

In 2004, hmfh Architects began working with the wayland high School Building committee to assess physical conditions and develop a programmatic solution that would support up to 1,100 students and the current educational pro-gram at whS. The initial plan was re-jected by the voters when the moratorium

on state funding was imposed. with the reinstatement of the new massachusetts School Building Authority in 2008, proj-ect planning resumed with an educational visioning session involving a wide range of community stakeholders. The resulting educational plan combines new construc-tion with renovation in a three-building campus that includes an academic building and a commons building linked by an open courtyard, and renovation of the existing 40,000sf field house.

consistent with the initial educa-tional concept, the new academic building groups general classrooms and informal small learning spaces in four flexible clus-ters around the central media center and seminar classroom with tiered seating. The adjacent commons building, in addition to the 600-seat auditorium and student din-ing commons, includes a music suite, art studios, “fab” lab, and fitness studio. The

commons also connects to the adjacent field house, which is being updated for full accessibility, Title IX equity, and sig-nificant improvements in energy use and conservation.

hmfh’s high performance design features integrated daylight harvesting, us-ing a combination of external sunshades, internal light shelves, and rooftop light monitors to daylight most of the learning spaces in the new buildings. Efficient site design includes relocating campus parking, replacing extensive paving with natural surfaces, and creating rain gardens to man-age surface run-off in paved areas.

The phased construction plan calls for existing academic buildings to be left in place while the new buildings are con-structed. Earlier this summer, temporary parking and traffic plans were put in place to minimize disruption to school opera-tions.

Boston - walsh Brothers, Inc., will serve as construction manager on the Boston college Stokes hall project at Boston col-lege. Three generations of the walsh family have built projects on the Boston college campus over the past 100+ years.

The architect for the project was Tsoi Kobus Architects.

Representing a cornerstone of Boston college’s institutional master plan, the 183,000sf Stokes hall will house an array of student pro-grams and support spaces. The building will house academic classrooms and facul-ty offices that promote interaction and both formal and informal learning opportunities. Stokes hall is targeted to be a lEED gold project with an expected occupancy in the fall of 2012.

Stokes hall will consist of two build-ings, connected by a linking bridge.

The Ashlar granite facility will be built in accordance with old-world con-struction techniques to achieve the tradi-tional Bc gothic stone design. The build-ing will be constructed with a solid load bearing masonry wall, all the way up, as opposed to modern-day construction which uses visible steel reinforcements on each level. Additionally, to help maintain the authentic gothic aesthetic, walsh Broth-ers will work with the mason to ensure that each palletized stone delivery contains a

consistent yet varied array of colors and sizes.

once completed, Stokes hall will serve as home to faculty offices for clas-sical studies, English, history, philosophy and theology. The building will also house the college of arts and sciences honors program, arts and sciences service center, academic advising center, and first-year experience offices, as well as 36 new class-rooms, common areas, a coffee shop, and conference rooms. outdoor gardens and a campus plaza will be featured.

with two active dining halls on either side of the project site, sensitive abutting historic campus buildings, and residence buildings, a detailed construction manage-ment plan was formulated to address traf-fic plans, delivery schedules, construction work hours, noise/dust/and vibration miti-gation strategies, pedestrian and construc-tion vehicle travel routes, and utility tie in details.

the new market Basket supermarket on this site. The project consists of new construc-

tion of a 97,000sf facility that includes the completion of a coffee bar, sushi center, deli, meat and fish counters, and a full ser-vice bakery.

The shell of the building includes the use of reclaimed granite from the former fairhaven mill, and a brick façade designed to match surrounding buildings from the

same period.Thousands of people turned out for

the grand opening in october. New Bed-ford mayor Scott lang told attendees he viewed the opening as “a catalyst to boost business in the entire city.”

The supermarket is the anchor tenant for what Dickinson plans as a mixed-use plaza adjacent to the Acushnet River.

phase 2 includes a 2.25 acre outpar-cel/pad site that Dickinson says would be an ideal location for a restaurant and bank.

Throughout the planning process, Dickinson and white insisted that the new development incorporate the architecture and materials reminiscent of New Bed-ford’s rich history. The market building replicates the old mill’s appearance. The exterior’s red brick, granite, masonry, and glass recall the old mill style. granite seat walls along property lines, made of granite removed from the fairhaven mill building, will be an inviting place for shoppers and neighbors to relax.

Stamford, cT – The old Town hall Redevelopment Agency (oThRA) recently held a grand opening celebration of the his-toric park and the old Town hall building.

The Beaux Art building, dating back to 1906, has just received a historic interior renovation completed by full-er and D’Angelo, architects located in Elmsford, N.Y.

The restoration includes terrazzo floors with marble mosaic borders, historic borders, historic woodwork restorations, floor to ceiling window restorations, plas-ter moldings, and a very large scagliola wall panel and column restoration. All of the interior was returned to its original splendor.

Along with the historical restorations came an ultra-modern addition. The new two-story transparent glass curtain wall, called the “sail,” added to the west side of the building, draws attention to the adjoin-ing classical façade and rejuvenates the Edward A. connell heritage park, with its lower plaza, meandering walk, and upper park.

with new city sculptures adorning the grounds, the new addition enables this

older building to function as a modern structure, providing an elevator, mechanical room and main staircase allowing this old building to function as well as any new modern office build-ing with its wonderful rehabili-tated historic interiors. Some of the building is being used as a museum, and the Ballet School of Stamford occupies another space; however, the majority of the space is ready to be leased.

Kronenberger & Sons Restoration, Inc is the general contractor.

Joseph fuller, Jr. is the partner-in-charge of the project, Said Zomorrodian the chief de-signer, and williams J. means the project architect.
