Barnet and Southgate College offers you a wide range of Higher Education (HE), Access and specialist professional courses. Some of our HE provision is

delivered in partnership with Middlesex and Hertfordshire University. Our programmes are suitable for students progressing from level three qualifications such as: A Levels, Access courses or National Diplomas and many courses are suitable for those in employment who want to improve their career prospects.The College can support you in achieving your full potential as many courses are focused on employability skills in a wide range of vocational areas including: accounting, early years, business, computing, travel, art, media, performing arts, sports and motor vehicles. Additionally, we offer career opportunities through our internship placement office with employers in the London area and there are also some opportunities for students seeking placements internationally.Whatever course you choose to follow, you can be assured that the qualification you achieve at Barnet and Southgate College will have the same equivalence as those attained at university, but with the added advantage of smaller class sizes, extra support from tutors providing pastoral care and personal guidance from your lecturers with academic work.

Shelley Buttar, is 20 years and studied the Foundation Degree in Fashion (which is now a HND in Fashion).She is currently a Buyer’s Administration Assistant at Zully UK.“After getting my A Level results, I didn’t get into my first choice, which was Hertfordshire University. I remembered visiting the College to find out about their A Levels and Higher Education courses. I looked into getting onto a fashion based course and after having an interview with tutor Carole Semaine, and with guidance in regards to course modules and my future goals I knew Barnet and Southgate College was right for me, even more so than Hertfordshire University was. So I enrolled on a Foundation Fashion degree, based at Wood Street in Barnet, which is a great campus, the facilities were excellent with state of the art printers, Apple Macs, sewing machines and brand new equipment perfect for fashion students. The course also came through clearance on UCAS so I could have also enrolled that way.”

Rose Kaleke is 54 years and studied the Foundation Degree in Fashion (which is now a HND in Fashion). Daniela Cavalli-Warby studied the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies, she is a registered childminderFrom commencement of her two year Foundation Degree Early Childhood Studies, Daniela continued to operate her “outstanding” childcare provision, demonstrating a passion for early years child care and education, whilst continually encouraging fellow practitioners to have high aspirations for themselves and the children and families they liaise with. With a thirst to continue in Higher Education, Daniela decided not to stop with her Level 5 Foundation Degree, but progressed in September 2012 to join Year 3 of the BA Early Childhood Studies programme at Middlesex University. Daniela is on track to complete her full B.A. Hons Degree in 2013, she said: “Reflecting on my journey from pre –registration for my home based child care business to today, completing the final year of a BA Early Childhood Studies Degree, I have to pay tribute to and acknowledge the quality of teaching, support and mentorship that I have received from Barnet and Southgate College.

Craig Carter studied the Foundation Degree in Business. Craig enrolled on the Foundation Degree Business part-time programme in February 2009. The flexibility of the part time programme, allowed Craig as a serving London fire officer, to fit his course attendance and related study around his demanding work commitments and family responsibilities. His employer took an active interest in his education by sponsoring his course. Many of his assignments were based upon his experience in the workplace and culminated in a five thousand word Management project investigating changes to the training procedures in the Brigade.

Access to Higher Education Diploma, for those students wanting to get to universityThe Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma is a qualification which prepares students for study at university. It is designed for people who would like to study in Higher Education but who left school without the usual qualifications such as A Levels, or those looking to gain promotion or change careers and require an HE qualification to do so. Although you can expect the course to be challenging, the whole purpose of an Access to HE Diploma course is to help you to be successful, so you will be well supported.

One of the key features of the Access to HE Diploma course is that most don’t require you to have any particular previous qualifications to start – and it doesn’t matter how long it is since you last studied. However, you must have the ability to study at this level, which will be assessed through on-line and written tasks, alongside demonstrating your commitment to your studies for the forthcoming year.

The Access to HE Diplomas help you to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to prepare for university, without any assumptions about what you may have done in the past.

Access to HE Diplomas are widely recognised by UK universities. Over 85% of our Access students go on to study full degrees or Foundation Degrees at universities across the UK with a large number pursuing new careers and seeing changes in their lives at they had never thought possible!

Higher National Diplomas, for those students wanting a practical route to the workplaceHigher National Diplomas (HNDs) are work related Higher Education qualifications. While degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNDs are designed to give you the skills to put that knowledge to effective use in a particular job.

They are highly valued by employers both in the UK and overseas. Because HNDs are designed to give you the skills for a particular field of work, they can lead straight to a career. You can often go on from an HND to study a degree as they are the equivalent of one or two years of university study. So completing a HND can allow entry into the second or third year of a bachelor’s degree, dependent on the course.

WHAT QUALIFICATION IS RIGHT FOR YOU?


Foundation Degree, an alternative to university with a practical and industry related ethosFoundation Degrees are modern, Higher Education qualifications that are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge that businesses are looking for. They can also offer an alternative route into Higher Education at a university. A Foundation Degree usually takes two years of full-time study to complete, and sits at the same level as the Higher National Diploma and equivalent to the first two years of a three year bachelor’s degrees.

Our Foundation Degrees are run in conjunction with Middlesex University and if you successfully complete the Foundation Degree course and achieve good grades, you may progress onto a third year with this or other institutions to top up your Foundation Degree to a full honours degree. Alternatively, you could progress on to further professional qualifications, or use the Foundation Degree to change or further your current career.

HE CertificatesHE Certificates are designed to give you the skills and knowledge required by employers. A HE Certificate usually takes 4 terms of part-time study to complete. Our HE Certificates are run in conjunction with Middlesex University and will enable you to progress with this institution.

Professional Programmes, for those students that know the profession they want to work within and need a certain qualification to do soWe offer many qualifications accredited by professional organisations such as AAT, ACCA, CIPD. These qualifications are designed with the needs of the profession in mind and are often the only route into a given profession.

Teacher Training, for students who want to teachOur range of Teacher Training programmes are extremely popular and can prepare you for primary, secondary, FE or HE teaching. ACCESS COURSES



What will I learn?This course is designed for those who are over 18 years of age and who may not have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to a BEng or BSc Degree programme at the University of Hertfordshire or older students who have followed a vocational route in engineering and now wish to return to education to seek a change in career path through an Engineering Degree route. This course represents the initial year of a four-year degree full-time course (five years with a sandwich option) and leads to a number of different progression routes.The course will cover the following topics:• Computers and their applications in

engineering• Electrical science and electronics• Engineering studies and skills• Mathematics 1 and 2• Mechanical science• Project

How will I be taught and assessed?Assessment will be through: College and University coursework which will include written assignments timed tests and practical tasks. In addition there will also be end of semester examinations in Semester A – in Engineering Science and Mathematics and in semester B –Mechanical and electrical science as well as Mathematics. Final marks for all modules are determined by aggregating all coursework and examination marks.

What are the entry requirements?Applicants will be required to have 80 UCAS points, plus GCSE English, Mathematics and Science at grade C or above. Applications are also welcomed from mature students with relevant employment experience.

What can the course lead to?On successful completion of this course, students may progress to either the first year of a BEng Engineering or BSc Technology Degree Programme in several engineering areas, the actual offer is determined by final marks in relevant modules.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYWhat will I learn?This course is designed for learners who want to study Information Technology or computing at Higher Education level but do not have appropriate qualifications.

What will I learn?This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in science. Applications are particularly welcomed from individuals who may have had little opportunity to study science at school but have an interest in science and a science based career.

You will study: Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics as well as being given the opportunity to improve your communication and IT skills.

How will I be taught and assessed?Each subject is divided up into units. These units are assessed partly by continuous assessment of practical and written work and partly by short tests and terminal examinations. What will I learn?Access to Science is specially designed for mature learners who want to progress to Higher Education but do not have the usual qualifications. You will need to have been away from full-time education for at least one year and you will be interviewed to check that the course suits your particular needs. You can obtain a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade on successful completion of each unit.

What are the entry requirements?We welcome mature students, good communicators, with good GCSE standard numerical skills, interested in science and have a desire for a science based career.

As this is a very demanding course, it is essential that applicants are highly motivated to go on to further studies and possess or can quickly develop excellent study skills. Students must pass the diagnostic exercises in literacy and numerical skills to join this course.

What will I learn?This course is for people who want to gain a qualification that will help them to gain access onto a degree course in Primary Teaching or Education Studies.

Areas of study: Child development, Educational issues, GCSE equivalents in English, Science and Maths, Information Technology, Study skills.

How will I be taught and assessed?Assessment through coursework to include presentations, essays, exams and role play, tutorials and work experience in schools.

What are the entry requirements?You must usually be aged 19+ at the start of the course and provide a satisfactory reference and interview.

You must already have or demonstrate at interview, written English skills at, or approaching Level 3 or higher and Maths skills at, or approaching Level 2 or higher. Relevant work experience is essential and you must demonstrate motivation and a commitment to study.

You will need to provide a Health and Criminal Records Bureau check.

What can the course lead to?Students can progress to BEd/BAQTS (degrees in Education with qualified teacher status) or a subject degree plus PGCE (Teacher Training).

What will I learn?If you want to progress to Higher Education, professional and vocational training to study a biological science based degree but have missed out on having the required A Level or equivalent UCAS tariff points, then this is the ideal course for you. You must have a genuine interest in biological science, have or are willing to acquire the study skills to enable you to successfully complete the programme.

The programme will cover a range of biology/biochemistry topic including; Human Health and Nutrition, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Chemistry for Biologist, the immune system and Laboratory techniques for Applied biology. There will also be a programme of tutorial support.

How will I be assessed? Assessment on this course is through: coursework, short structured tests, terminal exams for each unit and at the end of the year, reports from laboratory experiments, essays, and independent research projects.

What are the entry requirements?To be considered for a place on this course you must have a minimum of 100 UCAS tariff points obtained from A2 equivalents or BTEC L3 qualifications in science related subject. Learners achieving a full Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science or a related subject will also be considered.

What qualifications could I achieve? Learners can either achieve the Higher National Certificate in Applied Biology ( a Level 4 qualification) or the Higher National Diploma in Applied Biology (a level 5 qualification).

What can the course lead to? At the end of the programme learners can progress onto employment, training or further study. The HNC qualification will generally enable learners to progress onto the second year of a related degree. Learners achieving the HND can usually progress to year 3 of a related degree.

APPLIED BIOLOGY


What will I learn?This programme will give students the opportunity to explore various processes and techniques and offers the opportunity to work in a range of 2D and 3D specialist areas including: Fine Art, 3D Design, Multimedia Installation, Product Design, Interior and Spatial Design, Computer Applications, Studio/Workshop Practice, Visual Communication, Ideas Generating and Development, Contextual Studies and Professional Practice. The culmination of your programme will be the preparation of a series of events and exhibitions.

How will I be assessed? Assessment is an important part of the learning and teaching process. The intention of the team is that students have a clear understanding of achievement and strategies for improving progress and performance.There are no formal examinations on the programme. Assessment is formative and ongoing to provide regular feedback through timetabled sessions and tutorials. Grades and marks are awarded on the completion, submission and participation in specified assignment requirements.

What will I learn?The Foundation Degree in Applied Sports Science is taught in conjunction with Middlesex University and the degree is validated by Middlesex University. The course allows you to enter the sports industry with an emphasis on sports coaching principles that are generic, however the principles can be used in any specialist sport or the sports industry as a whole.

The aims of the programme are: • To develop a competent sports coach who will

Preparing to teach in the

LIFELONG LEARNING SECTORWhat will I learn?This part-time programme is an introduction to the basic practical skills and underpinning theories that are required as a starting point to teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to progress on to other awards leading to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS). The qualification is designed to enable learners to adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching, reflect on your own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation, develop communication and interpersonal skills and develop an awareness of the professional role and responsibilities.

How will I be taught and assessed?You will be taught in a variety of ways, using group work, lectures, practical sessions and presentations. Assessment is through course work, assignments and micro teaching.

What are the entry requirements?You need to have a good command of written and spoken English (Level 2), be IT literate, and provide evidence of relevant qualification at Level 3 in the specialist subject you wish to teach. You will undertake an initial assessment and have an interview.

What can the course lead to?You could progress to the Diploma to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) or other Teacher Training courses.

What will I learn?This is an in-service/pre-service course for teachers in the post-compulsory sector who wish to become fully qualified. It provides the knowledge and skills demanded of teachers in this sector. The Diploma confers licensed practitioner status or QTLS.

Students will develop their teaching skills and gain knowledge and understanding of current theories and practice that are required to develop a teaching career in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

How will I be taught and assessed?It is assessed through a combination of written assignments, peer presentations, and lesson observations. There will be at least four observations totalling four hours, usually in the candidate’s own employment setting.

What are the entry requirements?Candidates are required to have an academic qualification to Level 3 in the subject that they are teaching, as well as Level 2 or equivalent skills in English, Numeracy and ICT.

You will also need to be teaching in the post-compulsory sector for a minimum of four hours a week, in an established institution that is inspected by recognised bodies.

What can the course lead to?You could progress to other University/Higher Education programmes.

Note: To join one of our Foundation Degrees you will need an interview and students whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate IELTS skills of 6.0 or above. For HNDs in Graphic & Interactive Design, Fashion and Art & Design you will need a portfolio demonstrating creative ability and aptitude for the subject. An audition will be required for the HND Performing Arts programme. Mature students with relevant work experience and without formal qualifications may also be considered at interview.

HOW TO APPLY


InterviewOnce we have received both your application and satisfactory reference forms, we will invite you to an interview. Please bring evidence of your qualifications and achievements. We aim to offer you a place on a course at your interview. Please note any offer of a place maybe conditional upon achieving certain grades/qualifications or meeting other conditions.

Types of OfferIf you meet all the entry requirements and we are satisfied with your reference, we can give you an unconditional offer of a place. If you are waiting for exam results, your reference is delayed or you need to take a practical test for your course, you will be given a conditional offer.

The conditions you need to meet will be explained to you at your interview. Most applicants with conditional offers simply need to show evidence of their exam results when they receive them.

If you receive a conditional offer, don’t worry. You should, however, consider othercourses before you get your exam results. Then, if you don’t achieve the necessarygrades or level of work required, you will have an alternative ready.

If the interviewing tutor decides that your chosen course is unsuitable for you at thetime of interview, you may be invited to attend an appointment with a member ofthe careers advice and guidance team.

Exam ResultsDon’t forget to bring proof of your exam results when you come to enrol. If youdon’t achieve the grades required for your chosen course, don’t worry. We may beable to review our offer or suggest an alternative option.

Waiting ListsRemember that some courses fill quickly. Early application is advised. However if all the places on your chosen course have been allocated, you may be given an offer on a waiting list. This may still be a conditional offer, with requirements to meet before you are accepted. We will contact you in the second week of September 2013 (if not before) if a place becomes available.

What Happens Next?We will contact you to invite you to enrolment, which is the final stage of this process.

Learning SupportIf you have declared a support need for a learning difficulty or disability, or a supportneed is identified during the interview, you will have an interview with a memberof the Learning Support team who will discuss your support needs for the course and agree what support can be provided for you. We are committed to helping you succeed by giving you the resources needed to do this.

Language SupportIf you have a language support need (ie ESOL) a member of the Language Development team will assess your support needs for the course and agree what support can be provided for you once you have started.

DisclosuresIf you have declared either a medical condition or a criminal conviction disclosure you will be contacted by a Safeguarding Officer to discuss your disclosure. It is important that you provide accurate and full information when contacted in order that the College can be sure to meet its safeguarding and support responsibilities. A disclosure does not result in automatic exclusion of your application.



There are two main costs associated with studying a Higher Education course, tuition fees and maintenance costs (or living costs).

Costs for materialsFor all courses you will need to buy stationery and course materials. The cost of these items varies for each course, but is particularly high for courses in Art & Design, Media and Performing Arts, Beauty, Hairdressing, Hospitality and Catering, and Construction because for these courses you will often need to buy uniforms and items of equipment. This will be clarified at your interview.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans- Student loan CompanyStudents aged 24+ and over, studying Level 3 or above will qualify for the new government 24+ Advanced Learning Loans. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. Don’t worry that you won’t earn enough to repay your 24+Advanced Learning Loan; you will only have to repay it if you earn more than £21,000. If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you progress to complete a Higher Education programme, you will not have to pay back your FE loan.

Study hours For courses in this prospectus, the core course for students aged over 19 comprises less than 16 hours a week. Our part-time course guide has details of courses running for less than 12 hours a week and short courses. Each course in this prospectus comprises a core number of hours. However, a timetable may be drawn up according to an individual student’s needs. Students may study in the learning centres during “free periods”.
