What are some of the opportunities you

not have been available for you in Brazil?

“After my fi rst week of class at Hofstra, I was already in the studio editing a radio assignment. The opportunities to do assignments, make mistakes, learn from them, and have someone available to answer questions are learning techniques that would not have been available to me in Brazil.”

How has the School of Communication and Hofstra

helped you grow throughout your time here?

“I really came into my own last year with the presidential debate on October 15, 2008. I had no idea I would get to work on the debate coverage in the capacity that I did. It was a huge turning point for me. It was a tremendous opportunity that I never fi gured I would be able to experience in a million years.”

The School of Communication offers a liberal arts-based program of study in all forms of communication. Students choose from a wide range of undergraduate program options offered through the Departments of Radio, Television, Film; Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations; and Speech Communication, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies. At Hofstra’s School of Communication, students receive an education with real-world applications, close to the heart of the media world. Hofstra’s accomplished faculty and access to advanced resources help students fi nd their edge.

Our journalism students practice their craft by reporting for Nassau News, Pulse Magazine, or the Hofstra Chronicle, and our television majors work with them on both curricular and extracurricular shows produced in Dempster Hall. A majority of our radio majors are members of WRHU, Radio Hofstra University, which has the largest radio news department on Long Island. And many of our students are active members of various professional organizations, such as PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America), POISE (Professional Organization in Speech Education), and HABJ (Hofstra Association of Broadcast Journalists), as well as student organizations such as HFC (Hofstra Filmmakers Club) and HEAT (Hofstra Entertainment Access Television). These are just a few of the opportunities available for students to become involved at Hofstra while polishing their skills and preparing for their future.

The School of Education, Health and Human Services prepares individuals for careers in the health and helping professions. Hagedorn Hall, home to this school, features state-of-the-art facilities with optimum technology. These resources, along with a dedicated faculty of renowned scholars, prepare students for a future in education or health and human services. Hofstra’s School of Education, Health and Human Services provides the fi rst professional training of tomorrow’s teachers and teacher-leaders. This school offers a wide range of undergraduate program options in teacher, counselor and administrator education that can lead to further higher education in the pursuit of certifi cations, graduate degrees, or advanced certifi cates. Human services programs include athletic training, community health and exercise specialist.

“For me, being a teacher is not about disseminating content knowledge. It’s about being someone special in students’ lives, helping them make decisions about the future. If you treat students with respect and run a class that’s fair and fun, you can make a course challenging.”

“Enriching and exciting. I have had the unique opportunity to develop relationships with many of my professors. In high school, I had a whole year to establish a relationship with a teacher. At Hofstra — in a relatively short period of time — I was still able to receive great mentorship from professors who truly cared about my success as a student and a future educator.”

“I chose to join the School of Education, Health and Human Services in my sophomore year because I enjoy helping others and would like to enter the health profession. I am vice president of Hofstra Roteract, which is a club that supports world health. I have learned a great deal throughout my years at Hofstra University, and I have been given many opportunities to grow. Without Hofstra and the great professors in the Department of Health Professions and Family Studies, my experience as a community health major would not have been as rewarding.”

Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences believes that the liberal arts – the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences – are the foundation for all higher education. Hofstra University Honors College is an intimate community of students, faculty and administrators committed to challenging and supporting one another in the pursuit of excellence at all levels. Our students can choose from any undergraduate major, from music to mechanical engineering. Many can be found in leadership roles in virtually every club and activity on campus. Hofstra University Honors College is a community dedicated to discovery and intellectual engagement.

All entering Honors College students begin their Hofstra careers with a two-semester sequence of four courses called Culture & Expression (C&E). Together, each year’s class follows a common reading list, attends class-wide lectures, and takes ownership of the materials via small group discussions with some of Hofstra’s best faculty.

IN FOCUS

I defi nitely feel like I have a place at Hofstra because of Honors College. It’s been great both socially and academically. There’s always an opportunity to connect with people and to have fun; and even if I can’t make one event, Honors College is always sending out an e-mail for another.

I was looking for a challenge and a sense of community, and I found them both in Culture & Expression and honors housing. The professors I have encountered through Honors College have been amazing. Their lectures are interesting, they encourage discussion, and they push you to think beyond what you’re used to. It is a very positive experience.

Tyler GreenPope knew what he was looking for in a university. As president of his high school television station for three years, he knew he wanted a college with a strong communication program and excellent facilities. With a newly opened converged newsroom and multimedia classroom, Hofstra offered the facilities he was looking for. An interview with Dr. Doug Friedlander, director of writing and assessment for the School for University Studies, convinced him that Hofstra was the right choice. “He was very friendly, funny, welcoming,” Tyler said.

Tyler, who was a Student Government Association representative his fi rst year, was selected to chair the student committee for Educate ’08, a yearlong series of conferences, lectures and other events that preceded the October 15, 2008, presidential debate held at Hofstra. As chair of this committee, Tyler had a unique opportunity to participate in a national media event. “I was really honored,as a freshman, to be asked to take a powerful role like that,” he said.

Jill Reinholt chose Hofstra University because of its proximity to New York City and because of the feeling she got when she fi rst stepped foot on campus. “I did some surveys online, and Hofstra kept showing up, so I visited – and I loved it. It was by far the most welcoming university.” In Jill’s opinion, Hofstra has lived up to its promise.

As a fi rst-year Honors College student, Jill was enrolled in Culture & Expression, a series of multidisciplinary courses designed to explore the connections among disciplines. “I’ve been amazed by the professors here ... I came in with the expectation that they would be more interested in their research, that students wouldn’t be their No. 1 priority. But that hasn’t been the case. They’re right there with us, and they’re willing to help.”

Andrew Schuetz knew in the sixth grade that he wanted to own his own business. When he found out that there was such a thing as an entrepreneurship major, he thought, “Wow! This is perfect.” For Andrew, deciding on a school meant choosing among the relatively few colleges and universities that offered an entrepreneurship major. “I sat in on a class at my top three choices,” he said, “and my classroom experience at Hofstra [in Dr. Hayes’ entrepreneurship class] just blew me away.”

Andrew’s fi rst two years at Hofstra have been, in a word, “fantastic. There are so many opportunities here,” he said. “There are 170 clubs on campus, and there’s the city; it’s been a great experience.”

As a fi rst-year student, Andrew enrolled in a First-Year Connections cluster that included economics and math courses. “The cluster was amazing,” he said, “and it was a nice way to meet other students with a common interest in business.”

Chloe Panayiotou grew up in the small city of Pathos on the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus. The youngest of two children, she knew early on that she wanted to come to the United States for college, and she had her heart set on studying in the New York area.

“It was always my dream to go to college in the United States. I was an independent child. My mom disagreed. She wanted me to stay somewhere closer,” she said. But Chloe, who will be a senior in the fall, convinced her mother to accompany her on a tour of New York area colleges during her senior year in high school. While she didn’t have time to take a full tour of Hofstra, she was impressed by the academic offerings and the Admission staff. So when it came time to select a college, she chose Hofstra.

“I decided to come to Hofstra because the Psychology program here is really good and the location is ideal – close enough to New York City, but far enough away from the distractions of city life.”

It is a decision she said she would recommend enthusiastically to others. “I like everything about Hofstra – its location, the beautiful campus, the small classes, the school community, and school spirit. Hofstra is a school where you can easily make friends and be a part of the school community while still being an individual.”

Q. What if I like smaller classes, where the professors actually know me by name?A. Then Hofstra is a perfect choice for you. Hofstra keeps class size small, averaging just 22 students, and the student/faculty ratio at 14-to-1 to ensure that students receive the personal attention they need.

Q. You mentioned that Hofstra is near New York City. What can I do there?A. What can’t you do there? This is the most amazing city. Sample thousands of restaurants. Visit museums, sports arenas, galleries. See a Broadway show. Visit Top of the Rock. You could go every day for four years and still not see it all. And when you’re ready to seek an internship or start your career, you’ll fi nd opportunities at some of the world’s largest and most prestigious companies.

Q. When it’s time to fi nd a job, will Hofstra help?A. Absolutely. Hofstra’s Career Center will help you prepare for a career from your fi rst day on campus and will continue to provide career guidance long after you’ve graduated.

Q. I want to explore New York City, but I don’t have a car. Can I do that?A. We’re a fi ve-minute ride by car or bus from a Long Island Rail Road station, which can take you directly to midtown Manhattan in 45 minutes, day or night. And Hofstra shuttle buses provide transportation to and from the local train station.

Q. If I do have a car, can I keep it on campus?A. Absolutely. Unlike many colleges and universities, Hofstra permits all students to park on campus. You just need a registration sticker (which is free for students).

We have 21 on-campus eateries, with everything from pizza to Asian cuisine to salad to deli, vegan dishes, hand-rolled pretzels, whatever you wish. You’ll fi nd a wide variety of residence halls, including two that are reserved for fi rst-year students only, and we’ll help match you with a roommate – as we do for all fi rst-year students.

Q. Is Hofstra safe?A. At Hofstra, we are committed to the safety of our students. Safety measures include high-tech security in all residence halls and a professional staff of more than 65 Public Safety offi cers (as well as hundreds of student safety employees). In addition, we recently implemented an emergency response plan to enhance our crisis communication capabilities. An overview of this plan is available at hofstra.edu/publicsafety

Q. How hard is it to get into Hofstra?A. In the past two years, slightly more than 50 percent of applicants were admitted – so it’s very competitive. For the Class of 2013, the average SAT score is 1186 and average GPA is 3.39, while mid-range SAT scores for students admitted in fall 2009 are 1110-1250 (accurate as of 7/20/09). These scores do not include the essay. However, we consider many factors when admitting students.

Q. What if I ever need help, guidance or support at Hofstra? A. We have excellent fi rst-year programs – to help you adjust to both the academic and social life of the University. Every Hofstra fi rst-year student has a dedicated University adviser and faculty adviser in addition to access to tutors and many other support services. The Offi ce of Orientation and New Student Programs, as well as Hofstra’s Saltzman Community Services Center, are also available to students.
