WASHINGTON, DC - President Barack Obama won reelection on Tuesday, November 6th thanks in part to near-record levels of support from Latino voters, who came out in huge numbers to support him over GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

An impreMedia-Latino Decisions poll released as an alternative to exit polls found Obama had won 75 percent of Latino voters nationwide, while exit polls found him with around 70 percent Latino support. Either way, the margins are likely bigger than ever before, and bad news for the GOP.

Imagine Central Arkansas is an initiative

designed to bring about honest conversation with the folks who call Central Arkansas home. We want to do three things: listen to what you have to say about the future, collect your feedback and prioritize the key ideals that matter to all of us. What you tell us will be used to develop a long-range plan for our community, which includes Pulaski, Faulkner, Saline and Lonoke counties.

That’s why we need your input. Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority group in the country. In fact, 2010 U.S. Census data shows Arkansas is one of nine states with the largest percent of growth. But despite this, research indicates Hispanics are less likely to be civically involved in their community than any other minority group. And the Center for Advances in Public Engagement writes, “If we are unable to ensure robust

participation by our largest and fastest-growing minority group, our communities as a whole are impoverished and deliberative democracy is incomplete.”

What you have to say is important. While we may not live in the same neighborhoods, shop at the same grocery stores or use the same streets to get to work, every community is important; more importantly every voice matters. But for your voice to matter, it must fi rst be heard.

This is your opportunity. Share your hopes and dreams for Central Arkansas. We also want you to tell us what you believe needs improvement in your community.

Metroplan is depending on you to get involved, and there are several ways you can. During the month of

November, we are hosting Community Conversations all around the region. These one-hour listening sessions allow you to offer your ideas, suggestions and concerns about Central Arkansas. Con un apretón de manos, Benny Johnson de Stop the Violence le dijo a Alejandro Macías, Cónsul Mexicano de Asuntos de la Comunidad en el Consulado de México: “Queremos tener esta asociación de colaboración para ayudar a reducir los crímenes contra los hispanos”. En Southwest Little Rock, donde hay una creciente población Hispana/Latina que habla español, puede ser un reto poder llegar a ellos. A menudo es un grupo muy cerrado y hermético.

“We will be very happy to assist any person with the language barrier.”Police say it is a misconception that undocumented victims will be deported. Local offi cers do not have that federal authority.Captain Hastings says it is likely career criminals targeting Hispanics, not gang activity.Church pastors are planning a faith based prayer vigil at noon on the steps of Little Rock City Hall on Thanksgiving Day.

We hear a lot about making sure our children get all the immunizations they need, but there are shots that are very important for adults to get too.

Every fall, there is a new vaccine to protect people from influenza, or the flu. Influenza is a serious illness, and people who get it may end up in the hospital. Some, mostly older people, even die. Even healthy people can get the fl u and spread it to others who might have a higher chance of getting very sick, such as a young child or an older person. That’s why it’s so important for everyone to get a fl u shot.

Because the fl u viruses change every year, you have to get the fl u shot every year too. You may be able to get these shots from your doctor,

the state Health Department, and some local pharmacies.

Everyone who is at least 6 months old should get a fl u shot, but it’s especially

important for certain groups of people who are more likely to become seriously ill if they get the fl u.

The recommended groups are: Pregnant

women; People 65 years old or older; People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease; People who live

in nursing homes; People who live with or care for anyone in a high-risk group, including anyone who lives with or cares for a baby younger than 6 months old .

The best time to get a fl u shot is between mid-October and early November. But fl u season can last into the spring, so it will help to get a flu shot even as late as February.

People who are older than 65 should also get a pneumonia vaccine. Most people only need this vaccine once, not every year, like the fl u shot, but some people may need a second shot. Talk to your doctor to find out what is best for you.

annual Scholarship Banquet on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion. Gov. Mike Beebe served as the keynote

speaker. “We want to offer

these exceptional students encouragement and fi nancial support as they strive to

use education as a means of self and community improvement,” said Dr. Terry Richard-Trevino, president of LULAC 750

and a professor in the UALR Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

Proceeds from the scholarship banquet go

directly to post-secondary education. In 25 years, LULAC 750 has granted more than $500,000 in scholarships.

said Eliseo Medina, an immigration reform advocate and secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union. “They need to repair their relationship with our community. They can wave

goodbye to us if they don’t get right with Latinos.”

The country is becoming more diverse in general, with a growing Hispanic and Latino population and an even faster-growing Asian population. Those demographic changes will spell trouble for the

Republican Party if it remains on in its current trajectory, among Latino voters in particular.

Immigration isn’t the top issue for most jobs and the economy rank higher but it remains an important one, and for many Latino voters it’s something of a litmus

test. If a politician seems to disrespect immigrants or Latinos overall, or if the party seems uninterested in winning their votes, the support isn’t going to come. This year, it didn’t.

Polling shows that Latino voters not only felt they aligned better with Obama

on many issues, including jobs and the economy, they also felt the Democratic Party seemed to actually care about getting their votes.

Republicans touted their unprecedented efforts in 2012 to win the Latino vote, from wider get out the vote efforts to more Spanish-language

In every state polled by impreMedia and Latino Decisions, immigration was a major factor in the decision-making process. Most Latino voters support the president’s policies on the issue, even if he has not succeeded in enacting many of them.

The Dream Act, a bill to help undocumented young people, has support from a strong majority of Latino voters, and many said they became more enthusiastic about the president after his June announcement he would no longer deport some young undocumented immigrants who fit the same general requirements.

Poll show a pretty clear indicator of why many of those supporters may care strongly about immigration reform: 60 percent of those polled said they knew an undocumented immigrant.

Romney, on the other hand, took a hardline stance on immigration in the GOP primary and was never quite able to shake it as he moved into the general election. His calls for “self-deportation” making life difficult for undocumented immigrants until they left and for vetoing the Dream Act drew ire from immigration activists and Latino groups in general.

There are plenty of people on the GOP side who have urged a softer tone on immigration, but it didn’t seem to sink in with the Romney campaign until after the primary. In the fi nal months of the campaign, he pitched

his desire to find a solution for undocumented young people already in the country and advocated a broad fi x for immigration problems.

Too little, too late, said Lawrence Benito, CEO of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which organized Latinos and other immigrants to vote for the president this year.

“Romney during the primaries put himself into a corner,” he said. “He went to the right of everyone in

the Republican field, even respected conservatives, and the Latino and the immigrant community was not fooled.”

Romney lost his native Michigan and current home state of Massachusetts. Combined with his loss in Wisconsin, the birthplace of his running mate Paul Ryan, the GOP ticket became the first national ticket to lose both candidates’ home states since Democrats George McGovern and Sargent Shriver did in 1972.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - UALR Chancellor Joel E. Anderson announced Wednesday the appointment of Zulma Toro-Ramos as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Toro-Ramos, currently dean of the College of Engineering at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, will assume the new position on Jan. 7, 2013.

“Dr. Zulma Toro-Ramos brings to UALR an impressive portfolio of leadership skills and experiences that will serve this university very well. She enthusiastically embraces our student success goals, and her vision and values are a good match for UALR’s mission. She is well-prepared to lead our university’s academic division through the challenging times that lie ahead for higher education. Dr. Toro-Ramos has a strong record of engaging the community as well as state legislators to the benefi t of her university and state,” said Chancellor Anderson.

As Provost, Toro-Ramos will lead six colleges,

Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Business; Education; Professional Studies, including the School of Mass Communication and the School of Social Work; Engineering and Information Technology; and Science and two free-standing schools, the Graduate School and the Bowen School of Law.

“I am honored and excited with the opportunity to serve as provost and vice chancellor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock,” said Toro-Ramos. “I look forward to working with Chancellor Anderson and his leadership team, the faculty, students, and staff as we continue to take this wonderful

institution to its next level of excellence.”

As dean of the College of Engineering at Wichita State, Toro-Ramos provided academic and administrative leadership for a college of 54 full-time faculty members and a student body of 1,500 undergraduates, 630 master’s degree students, and 100 Ph.D. students.

Toro-Ramos received a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1988, a master’s degree in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan in 1983, and an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering from the University of Puerto Rico in 1982.

Prior to joining Wichita State in 2005, Toro-Ramos was dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of New Haven, Conn., from 2001 to 2005 and was chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez from 1999 to 2001.

Toro-Ramos was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Her salary will be $227,186.

What is the Census of Agriculture?

The Census of Agriculture, taken every fi ve years, is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. The Census looks at land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income and expenditures. For America’s farmers and ranchers, the Census of Agriculture is their voice, their future and their responsibility.

How is the Census conducted?Report forms for the 2012 Census of Agriculture will be mailed to farm and ranch operators in late December 2012 to collect data for the 2012 calendar year. Completed forms are due by February 4, 2013. Producers can return their forms by mail or can fi ll out the Census online via a secure website at www.agcensus.usda.gov

Why is the Census of Agriculture important?The Census provides the only source of uniform, comprehensive and impartial agricultural data for every county in the nation. Through the Census, producers can show the nation the value and importance of agriculture and they can help infl uence the decisions that will shape the future of American agriculture for years to come.
